Gift to fans as Demon announce vast Wedding Present reissues

wedding_complete3

Demon Music’s deluxe editions of the output of British indie rockers The Wedding Present have been long in the planning and are finally due for release in October 2014.

Fans will surely agree it’s been worth the wait since each of the eight albums reissued (including compilations Tommy and Hit Parade and the 6-track EP Mini) will be a offered as very generous 3CD+DVD editions. Each set will include a host of additional material including B-sides, demos, radio sessions and live tracks. The DVDs each have promo videos, TV appearances and more. These are presented in Demon’s favoured casebound book packaging.

If you think you are likely to pick up more than a few (or even all of these sets), then it may well be worth considering one of Demon’s ‘fan bundles’ which are available exclusively through their Wedding Present online store.

The eight reissues are split into two bundles – 1987-1991 and 1992-1996 – and each comes with an exclusive seven-inch single with recordings made in 2014. The mega-bundle (“The Complete Collection”) brings everything together and you get all eight sets and two seven-inch singles. Or to put it another way 34-discs!!

These are all available individually on Amazon of course, and will be released on 20 October 2014. You will find full track listings below.

I can confirm I had one of my orders cancelled too.

Jan

I’ve just had a ‘refund’ for two of the collections from MyPlay who were doing the official; Wedding Present site orders. No message. I’m guessing they have over subscribed? Any one else getting refunds?

hyperfex

Anyone’s order got also canceled?

Yoshiaki

Where’s “This Boy Can Wait” 7″ Edit? and “Flying Saucer” original 7″ Edit? “Lay Off”, “Will You Be Up There?” and lots of rare tracks have not been issued on CD.

Gazelle

I wasn’t previously aware of ‘Lay Off’ and ‘Will You Be Up There?’, but the former is currently available to view in rehearsal recording format on YouTube and the latter is listed on Discogs as a track from a self-released four track cassette recorded at the Billiard Room, Leeds in 1984. (The other three tracks on the cassette are ‘(The Moment Before) Everything’s Spoiled Again’, ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Nervous Man In A Four Dollar Room’.)

Gary C

Amazing sets, surely the envy of other bands at that level of success who still have not got their respective catalogues in order and released properly.
Save the SDE complete Smiths, which I couldn’t afford to buy (and it was mostly old ground) I’m hoping somewhere along the line, we shall se something like this presided over by Johnny at some stage.
Shall be picking up George Best at least.
I saw TWP at Primavera 2014 and they can still crank it out with the best of them.

Stan Butler

Gary, The Smiths reissues pale into insignificance compared to these fantastic sets.

The Smiths reissues were simply remastered. The packaging was exactly as the original CDs (minimal), even repeating the wrong artwork on Hatful of Hollow and Meat is Murder (the stand alone releases). The 12″ tracks not on the compilations were not included in the physical releases. Likewise the BBC Session tracks not on Hatful of Hollow were nowhere to be seen.

Gary C

As I said Stan, wishing someone would allow the same treatment on the Smiths catalogue as has been lavished on TWP with these individual SDE’s

I’m well aware of The Smiths SDE shortcomings…Stephane at Passions Just like Mine did some splendid mock ups a few months back which would be ideal…

Ross

Where’s Undercurrent?

Gazelle

Good question – I’d not considered that one. Originally found on a flexi attached to issue 5 of Ablaze! magazine, this is a cover of a Pacific Surfers’ number from Surfin’ Wild. Released in 1993, this would logically relate to either the Hit Parade or Watusi reissues although I’m not sure there would be room on either of their respective second CDs to house this (albeit short) instrumental track.

I own the reissues that have a lot of the same bonus tracks as these and really good remastering. But damn I love TWP so much I just have to buy these. Going to cost about 130 to order them from UK

The bundle of all 8 albums, plus the 2 x 7″ singles signed by David Gedge costs £111 overall, so £13.87 per album (with the 7″s effecitvely free). Not sure why the individual sets of 4 CDs + 7″ are £59.99 (+ postage) and the set of 8 £104.99 (+postage).

Be quick though, only 3oo bundles with the signed 7″s

Those ‘bundles’ aren’t particularly great value…Unless you place much value in the 2 limited edition 2014 7″ singles (yawn…) then they work out at £14 – £15 per album…. They even charge you for P&P…

I am cautiously optimistic. The original CD releases and the later expanded releases were reasonably well mastered, and retained a good dynamic range in a genre that is infamous for ear-piercing compression. TWP have some great songs, though some might find DG’s vocals an acquired taste. Like ‘JL’ above, I’ll will wait to hear news and reviews before I dive in.

As enticing as these sound I’m not preordering anything anymore as half of what I get are remastered at ear bleeding levels. Hope these turn out good for later purchase.

Agree with dudemeister…a bar setting example of reissues….but sadly the music is lost on me so I won’t be benefitting from these corkers…

“No, you’ll go away
OF COURSE THAT’S NOT WHAT I WANT
Oh, I’ve missed you
That’s what I thought you’d say
But you must know that I can’t resist you”

Wow, what an exhaustive track listing!

A few minor quibbles/comments that have sprung to mind after an initial perusal:

1) ‘Living And Learning’ from the original Tommy track listing is from the Andy Kershaw Evening Session. Has this version been inadvertently duplicated on CD2?

2) ‘Felicity’, ‘What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted’ and ‘You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends’ from the original Tommy track listing are from the first John Peel session. Have these versions been inadvertently duplicated on CD2 and labelled ‘Evening Show sessions’?

3) ‘This Boy Can Wait (A Bit Longer)’ from the legendary NME C86 cassette has not been added as an extra track on Tommy. (Possibly due to the recent CD86 reissue?)

4) There are two alternate versions of ‘You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends’ and ‘Living And Learning’ listed for CD1 of Tommy. Is this a typo? Also, is the alternate version of ‘You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends’ the original 7″ single version (which to my knowledge has never been released on CD)?

5) Single edits for ‘Dalliance’ and ‘Lovenest’ from Seamonsters appear to be missing.

6) The single edit for ‘2, 3, Go’ from Saturnalia also appears to be missing.

7) The Ukrainian Peel Sessions have not been included as extra tracks. (However, these are available on The Complete Peel Sessions box set.)

8) Several live tapes have not been included as extra tracks. (However, these are (will be?) available on the yearly Live series of CDs.)

DJB

1) Fully aware of the duplication! CD 2 now houses the complete session available

2) Yes, this is an older version of tracklist – tracks 6 – 8 are all from Peel Session recorded 11 February 1986

3) Spot on

4) No typo, 2 versions of each! Here are the credits for the alternative tracks

13. LIVING AND LEARNING
(ALTERNATE VERSION) 2:38
B Side of REC003/12 – This Boy Can Wait

14. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS KEEP IN TOUCH
WITH YOUR FRIENDS (ALTERNATE VERSION) 2:55
B Side of REC003/12 – This Boy Can Wait

15. LIVING AND LEARNING (ALTERNATE VERSION) 3:02
B Side of RANT 001 – Raging Sun Compilation

16. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS KEEP IN TOUCH
WITH YOUR FRIENDS (ALTERNATE VERSION) 2:59
A Side of SHELTER 1 – Ideal Guest House Compilation

5/6) Didn’t make the cut

7) It was decided to keep the Ukrainian material separate early on.

8) The live tapes were specifically selected to best match the era and for the performance. Sure the rest will surface!

Many thanks for clarification. I’m pleased to hear the original ‘single’ versions of ‘You Should Always Keep In Touch With Your Friends’ and ‘Living And Learning’ are included as I do not have these on CD. (The fact they were labelled ‘alternate’ versions threw me, as to my mind these are the definitive original versions.) Not sure I agree with the logic to intentionally have duplicated tracks on an album, but understand the motivation to keep both the original Tommy track listing and the original radio sessions intact. Roll on October…

Although I can’t get the bundles since I live in the states, I did order these quite some time ago on Amazon for 2-4 pounds less than they are currently. Score!

Tim

So much for the fans in the States.

Tim

This is so amazing! They even included all of the mail-order tapes!

dudemeister

That is a pretty amazing re-issue set they’ve put together here. I’m actually disappointed that I don’t like the Wedding Present enough to want this.
