NewsChangin' Times: The Complete Hollies: Jan 1969 – March 1973
Next month sees the release of The Hollies: Changin’ Times, a new five-CD box set from Parlophone.
This collection includes all the albums and singles [and rare tracks] released from January 1969 to March 1973. Packaging comes in the form of a five-CD jewel case (probably ‘fat box’ style) with a 24-page booklet featuring sleeve notes by band member Tony Hicks.
Changin’ Times: The Complete Hollies Jan 1969 to March 1973 is out on 10 July 2015.

I was waiting for this collection to come out and presumably at some stage there will be another one taking us post 1973 as there’s loads more to come. IMO The Hollies did better than anyone expected in this period after suffering the departure of Graham Nash and then temporarily Allan Clarke and there’s some interesting stuff on here, nearly all of which I have on vinyl, and I will be ordering this CD collection. Distant Light was a bold venture criticised by many Hollies fans at the time but contains great tracks like Long Dark Road, Long Cool Woman and To Do With Love. As ever great guitar work from Tony Hicks all the way through.
Shame they don’t run in album order you get used to what track comes next. Will only be buying for the (hopefully)better sounding Out on the Road tracks. They deserve deluxe packaging with bonus tracks not bargain basement re-releases!!

Myself, I was happy to see this and pre-ordered from SpinCD on May 23rd. First time ordering from them, but I waited a few days and nothing showed up on amazon.uk, so I took the chance… five CD’s for £16.99 is a pretty good deal.
Also, I have to say that I think this release certainly belongs on the SuperDeluxeEdition site. Thank you Paul, for giving us a place like this… I seldom add my two cents (pence), but this is one of my favourite places on the web – please keep up the good work, it’s much appreciated!

Personally, I always felt that this period, post Graham Nash, was where The Hollies proved they could continue as a valid band. If you think about it, so many of their 60’s UK contemporaries were gone: The Animals, The Yardbirds, The Zombies, Manfred Mann, The Dave Clark 5, Herman’s Hermits, Chad & Jeremy, Peter & Gordon, and shocking at the time, The Beatles. The Hollies were still recording. Their song writing skills improved and the vocal harmonies still sound gorgeous. The production values are first rate.
I never cared for the Romany album; it was strange to hear a lead voice so dissimilar to The Hollies Sound I knew and loved. I was quite glad when Alan Clarke returned to his mates. I will buy this special, complete box set.
Excepting their rendition of “The Mighty Quinn”, I really like “Hollies Sing Dylan”, and I should note, that , in the UK it was(in its time) one of their biggest-selling original albums.
I should also note, that, during the period covered by this 5-CD set, the quality of the group’s instrumental work, arrangements & production rapidly increased. Improving recording technology & the addition of Terry Sylvester certainly helped.

I remember hearing the Dylan tribute album and was amazed at how bad it was. Almost as if they didn’t take the songs seriously. I like the Hollies quite a bit but this period, for me anyways, is very weak . The hits are pretty good though. Hopefully its cheap to entice others.
I wonder if it’ll drop to a seriously cheap price like the first set did?

I really don’t think the qualifies as super deluxe….if its like the previous one its cheap yet admittedly good value….nothing super or deluxe about it though . If you list this you may as well list every other CD reissue coming out.
SuperDeluxeEdition is a “box set and reissue music blog”. I think this 5CD collection is relevant. Obviously I’m not expecting every single post to be of interest to every single person out there. That would be weird…
Well I thought the last Hollies set was a bit ‘cheap’ on the production front. Don’t get me wrong..love the blog but lots of stuff missing if you are going to cover reissues in general. Always saw this site as covering the more mainstream stuff…and very useful it is too.

Allan Clarke was gone, probably in the middle of his transfer from Leicester to Leeds, and the new version Hollies managed to brutalize Judee Sill’s Jesus was a Crossmaker. The track shows up here, 4 #11, I hope someone somewhere benefits from Judee’s writing.
