Another Place And Time, Donna Summer‘s celebrated 1989 collaboration with the Stock Aitken Waterman (SAW) production team is the most generous of the forthcoming reissues with three CDs included within the casebound book packaging. The track listing for this expansive set has just been announced and as expected there is a plethora of remixes.
Unusually, the first CD has no bonus material appended, sticking to the 10-track album with disc two the starting point for the various remixes. Three of the five UK singles are represented on CD 2 with five versions of Breakaway, three of I Don’t Wanna Get Hurt (12″, Instrumental and ‘remix’) and a pair of This Time I Know It’s For Reals. In between are some instrumentals of a few album tracks.
The third disc is dominated by third single Love’s About To Change My Heart with no less an eight remixes. An instrumental of album track Whatever Your Heart Desires and three remixes of the 45 When Love Takes Over You complete this 12-track selection.
It’s certainly a generous deluxe edition and with a price tag of under £11 in terms of the purchasing decision, it’s a bit of a no-brainer. Even so, we’d love to hear from all you Donna and PWL fans out there. Let us know what you feel about what is on offer – any missed opportunities?
Another Place And Time is released on 1 December 2014. The 3CD edition is also included as part of the CD Box Set. The standard 10-track album is being reissued on LP which can also be found in the vinyl box. Most of the eighties catalogue is being re-released and you’ll find all Donna reissue details here.

These CD’s are packaged in a book format that is very similar to some David Bowie ones I had.
And despite handling like they were eggs they still managed to look like Donald Duck had skated all over them.
Depeche Mode release CD Version of their 12” Singles in Germany with replicas of the ‘inner bag’ as well.
They weren’t paper but some non-scratch cloth type material so you could get the CD out of it’s case without ever marking it.
Sadly that sort of attention to detail is missing here but at least it’s not digipacks !
I dunno how many times I’ve been uber careful and yet the bloody CD has fell out !
Maybe there are plans for a definitive Stock Aitken Waterman Collection 3 CD set! to included many of the still unreleased Donna Summer mixes and other PWL gems! My fingers are crossed!!!
It is a shame that the CAPRICORN remix of “Work that magic” is not included in the “Mistaken Identity” release.

They’ve located the original Hammond mix of IDWGH? Oh-my-actual-god!!! I am soooo excited as this was always my fave track on the LP and I was pretty disappointed when I bought the 12″ the day it was released as it sounded nothing like the version on the album. Will be nice to finally hear a longer mix of the original.
Looking forward to seeing the new track listings. I have been keeping an eye on Amazon daily since I first pre-ordered the CD boxset.

Great price too! Tho I wsh the tracks could’ve been spread across 2 discs and the third being a dvd with all the videos and TV performances of the singles. Just like the recent Bananarama and forthcoming Kylie reissues.
Hey guys, I appreciate all the comments about Love’s About To Change… and the lost Pete Hammond Mix but I was convinced, since the album was first released, that If It Makes You Feel Good would and should’ve been a single and most definitely has an extended version hiding somewhere. What I do find exciting but strange is that there is a Pete Hammond Remix Instrumental apparently included on this re-issue but where’s the full Pete Hammond Extended Remix or 7″ Remix? Could they possibly appear on the CD with his forthcoming book? It would be great reading I’m sure! Can’t wait for the Donna Deluxe Box Set!

We have been reading through all of the posts and would like to respond to you but firstly to let you know that the entire re-issue programme, is being produced in conjunction with Bruce Sudano and that it has taken more than four years for the planning of the re-issues to get to the current stage.
We can confirm that the masters used for this album, have all been sourced from PWL’s archives; with many tapes sourced as recently as last week.
Only those tracks/mixes/versions for which we have masters can be used and some of those clearly state ‘DO NOT USE’ across the front of the tape box, for reasons that were decided upon prior to their original release in 1989.
We can also confirm that we have now located the original 12” Mix of ‘I Don’t Wanna Get Hurt’ from October 1988, which was unmarked as being the original mix on the tapes and will be including it on the album.
The mixes and instrumental versions that appear on CD2 and CD3 were sequenced by title, in order to make it easier to see which mixes have been included but in response to other comments, have also slightly re-sequenced the two discs.

Mike Stock said on twitter a couple of days ago that there were a couple of additional songs recorded by Donna with SAW but that these were unmixed and therefore not finished. Though in the same situation with Sam Fox SAW material, they were finished by others in order to be released.
Thanks Joey for reporting this. Like it was reported earlier on this blog, now that Donna’s estate has issued APAT, perhaps PWL will get some of what they have released included these 2 unfinished tracks and some of these reported alternative mixes of songs.
So if the PWL 7″ of ‘Love’s About To. change My Heart’ with the extra Donna vocals on outro would be the version used in the video clip? I love this version with the Donna adlib woah woahs and more vocals. A 12″ of this would be fabulous
Andy, the 7″ version of ‘Love’s About To Change My Heart’ with the different outro and extra vocals is not the PWL 7″ Mix, it’s known as the ‘edit’ on the UK 7″ vinyl, Japan 7″ vinyl & 3″CD and runs at the same time 3.45. Both 7″ versions were mixed by Phil Harding. The version in the video clip is the PWL 7″ Mix.
There was a longer, unreleased Pete Hammond 7″ Remix, with further previously unheard vocals, mixed at the same time as Hammond’s unreleased 12″ Remix ‘A Midsummers Night Mix’.

Firstly, the positives:
1. I’m happy that one of the best albums from this era is getting a deluxe edition. It’s a quality album from a brilliant artist that doesn’t get the kudos it deserves because of the stigma attached with being a SAW production.
2. I love the fact that the original album has its own disc. I’m not a fan of adding “extras” to a CD simply to maximise its capacity. I’m a traditionalist and prefer an album to follow its original running order without any added music.
3. I think the triple disc offers real value for money. OK, there are some remixes that people would like to have seen included, but I honestly think the criticism is a little unfair with people tending to take the “glass half empty” approach. I say be grateful for what has been included.
The negatives:
For me there is only one: The running order with the same song in all its different guises being played consecutively poor and comes across as lazy. It’s not difficult to put together a playlist that would make this special edition a more enjoyable listening experience. For starters, I would have all the 7″, edit and dub versions of each of the songs on the 2nd disc and the extended remixes on the 3rd disc.
I should have added that I’ll definitely be purchasing this deluxe edition of APAT. After which I will rip the bonus discs into mp3s and then change the running order for when I listen to it either on my phone or in the car :-). So in the end the running order won’t make a big difference to me I suppose.
“Love’s About To Change My Heart”:
I think the PWL 12″ Mix is simply a longer mix from the PWL 7″ Mix
– that has the “new” vocals in the “outro” after the break of the song.
This would be an ( earlier ) 12″ mix and previously unreleased.
The released 12″ remix has additional drums but
not the “new” donna-vocals.
So this PWL 12″ mix could be a real treasure of
a fantastic song. One of the best donna summer tracks ever
( in my opinion ).
No no no at mixing tracks, I prefer them all together, but the alphabetical order is a bit silly.
Truly a bargain, but I’m sure everyone would have gladly paid more to have everything. And no, iTunes in the future is not an option. I want real music, not some crappy mp3.

Huge PWL fan and to be honest it has all that was released in 1989/90 and you cant ask for more than that (bar caveat below) and some unreleased instrumentals and at that price is reissue of the year. It also saves me spending £60 on the US CD promo of the Clivilles & Cole mixes of LATCMH! But…
The Love Dub of LATCMH I hope is a longer version of the C&C Dub 2, otherwise death is likely..
Surprised people arent making more of the remix of If It Makes You Feel Good?
The PWL 12”/7” mixes of LATCMH dont have times against them on the advert so wondering if they are speculative/placeholder, as said I am sure the Ext and 12” Remix are same.
Does anyone know Tom Parker to ask him his involvement, I’d be fascinated to know his opinion? Paul – get an interview with him please!
Daniel, don’t forget that PWL’s rights over the Kylie material is far greater-reaching than their rights over Donna’s. Kylie was signed to PWL records, DS was not. SAW were paid by Warner to write & produce (& then effectively hand-over) the DS tracks. They are, simply, not theirs to release.

Pete Waterman said in a interview that there was no songs
outside the album recorded with Donna Summer.
But maybe demo versions were made ?
According to Donna from an interview years ago, the APAT project belonged to her and then after her death to her estate. The one big question is who owns the rights to the reported “unreleased” or alternative versions of all this APAT material? PWL has suggested they have material in their “vaults.” So why haven’t they released any of it? They certainly have released a lot of unreleased songs and mixes a few years ago on I-tunes. Until Pete Waterman or Bruce Sudano or others are interviewed and such inquiries are put to them. these will remain unanswered questions.
The order of the tracks for CD2 and CD3 is dreadful. All tracks in alphabetical order, then as an after thought, all the Love’s About To Change My Heart mixes are then also in alphabetical order. Is this seriously the final running order? Something like this would be better, and easier on the ears:

“The 3CD edition is also included as part of the CD Box Set” – is that definitely the case Paul? If the original album is on a disc to itself, and that is continued across the seven albums, it would be easy for just those seven discs to form the box set. There is no answer on myplaydirect yet.
This issue is still circulating? Yes the special editions are in the box set. The “7” in the description refers to the number of albums not the physical number of discs. Why in heavens name would the label issue discs in the box set that aren’t the main discs they are selling? The packaging includes sleeves in each of the book style CD. So getting 2 or 3 discs in the book style CD is not a huge deal. It doesn’t change the size of the CD. All this anxiety over a non-issue. I can’t believe people are still asking this question.

I thought ( after the death of Donna Summer ) PWL would release
on I-tunes all unreleased remixes, the instrumental versions and backing tracks – like they did earlier with Kylie Minogue.
But it never happened.
Maybe they’ll conceive that we would buy that instantly !
The 3-CD tracklist above has a runtime of about 163 minutes, which is a few minutes over the limit for 2 CDs. So since 3 CDs were needed for everything, a decision was apparently made to keep the original 10-track album on its own disc, then use two discs for the remixes and instrumentals.
As I said above, if the Extended Remix and PWL 12″ Mix of Love’s About to Change My Heart are indeed the same mix, then removing one brings the runtime down to about 156.5 minutes, which could fit on 2 CDs.
No edition of anything is ‘deluxe’ while they are still packaged in easily damaged (and usually arriving damaged) crappy cardboard cases with the discs rammed into tight sleeves. Once these are tatty and damaged they look crap and can’t be replaced.
Bring back the jewel case so I can easily replace it if need be.
Seriously? Jewel cases add nothing to the sleeve experience, nothing but cheap, overpowering hard plastic. Designers’ nightmare! :) I for one am extremely pleased that, of lately, those plastic nightmares are slowly dying out in favour of the purer casebound/cardboard sleeves!

On CD3, everything I’ve seen online indicates that Track 7 and Track 11 are identical. In the UK, the long version of the single remix of Love’s About to Change My Heart was called the Extended Remix, while in the US it was called the PWL 12″ Mix (while the single remix was called the PWL 7″ Mix, which is what it is called on this reissue).
If these two mixes are identical, then one really should be removed. Also, that would bring the total runtime of the set down to about 156.5 minutes, which means everything could fit on 2 CDs.
UGH! Why do they always have to put all the mixes of the same song consecutively? Why can’t they mix it up and vary it? Does anyone really want to listen to the same song eight times in a row before hearing a different song? This is maddening.
Labels put the remixes together so that consumers are able to review what ones are included and what ones are left out. This format certainly saves time to check on the track list especially for collectors. The label knows that collectors are going to be one of the primary groups buying these CD’s. If you mix them up it takes a lot more time to review the release and less likely that someone may make the decision to buy it.
I am sure the few mixes not included can be purchased from someone on eBay if wanted that badly.
A few mixes not included, so what? There is no pleasing some people when it comes to deluxe edition! Maybe there is a reason these tracks are missing from this release. You get plenty for your money, so stop moaning!
On one hand a bit dissapointed that there are no unreleased remixes on there. We know they excists. On the other hand the CD’s are filled with stuff and it’s a real bargain for sure. Perhaps they will turn up eventually at i-tunes or something. One can only hope. But the Pete Hammond mix of I don’t Wanna Get Hurt, ohh why not!!!!
Partly may not be on the release because there could be a dispute of who really owns them or has the right to release them. Now that Donna’s estate will reissue ATAP perhaps PWL will be able to release all the unreleased versions of the songs. Or if Donna’s estate owns them they might be planning some rarities or unreleased CD’s in the future.
From what I can tell -and this is speculative- this release has had no direct involvement with PWL, and therein lies the source of disappointment. Certain unreleased mixes have been disclosed and even previewed (in snippet form) on their website, and discussed across forums, and so they were expected by fans to be on this release. I don’t doubt that they would have been, too, had PWL been involved & had freedom to compile.
However, I think this has been compiled -quite generously, as it goes!- from what is in the library at Warners/Geffen, rather than what lurks in the archives at PWL. If these mixes were never released from PWL studios at the time (for whatever reason), then they wouldn’t be available for this collection from the Warner tapes.
Of course, the real question is: if PWL have not been involved, why not? We may never know… licencing, ever-shifting contractual rights & obligations, management of estates & catalogues after an untimely death… these are all things that I can’t begin to even pretend to understand!
If the fans weren’t aware of the alternative Pete Hammond & Dave Ford mixes, I think this release would have been received with almost unanimous applause. As you said, Paul, £11 for a casebound collection of a remastered album plus 25 bonus tracks is a bargain for sure!
We know that PWL (&, specifically, Tom Parker) are not afraid to share alternative versions, unreleased mixes, dubs, edits, or whatever lies unheard, when they are able to do so. Which leads me to believe that, in this case, they were not.
Again more speculation previews and snippets. That doesn’t mean these unreleased mixes were useable for release. Perhaps they weren’t completed or they were unusable masters. Donna owned whatever she recorded for this project. Until there are some interviews by the label that put these together or from Peter Waterman or Bruce Sudano, Donna’s husband this is all speculation. Warner’s had no role in any of this. Donna owned all these post Casablanca masters. They were part of the estate. Geffen, Atlantic or Warner’s had no role in any of this. A few years before she died, Donna reported owning all of these tapes. Who knows the label may be planning and Odds & Ends, Rarities collection in the future with all of the one off tracks like Love On & On, La Vie En Rose, The Power of One, I Got Your Love etc.
Again Andrew, in this instance the unreleased mixes referred to have already been heard first hand and confirmed as complete from those who have visited PWL studios and by staff who posted snippets from, the PWL library (sourced for most other PWL related CD re-issues).
Again, the pubic will need more than just the word of people who perhaps want to feel special about knowing something others don’t know about or have heard something others haven’t. Someone went so far as to publish the DAT insert identifying the Pete Hammond remixes of IDWGH. Some of the information on that insert seemed wrong. It had the album time at 3:56. That wasn’t the album time for IDWGH on the final CD.
Also even a more interesting question. Pete Hammond has a book coming this Fall 2014 similar to Phil Harding’s from 1 or 2 years ago with a double CD of some of his mixes including a Beyoncé mix. Why isn’t his mixes of either Donna song IDWGH or LATCMH going to appear on that 2 CD set? Instead he reports having to do a complete rebuild of the IDWGH track with a different vocalist.
There is more to these vault recordings than a simple release. Collectors have to ask after 25 years and all the unreleased mixes PWL has issued on I-tunes and now the release APAT, why does these remain somewhere archived?
James, your comments begs the question why wouldn’t PWL be asked to be involved in this 25th anniversary release of their perhaps most celebrated project? Also why haven’t they over the last 25 years released these Pete Hammond mixes? More currently, why isn’t Pete Hammond including any of his mixes of IDWGH or LATCMH on the 2 CD release to accompany his forthcoming book? These mixes are presumably in their “vaults” yet no release why? Until these queries are answered all the rest is unsubstantiated speculation
News is that they have located the 12″ Pete Hammond Original Mix of IDWGH. It was mismarked on a DAT from the PWL Archives. Good News it is going to be included. Well that answers my question of why it hasn’t been released or used in the past. It has been unmarked and “lost” in all those DAT at PWL studios. Others are reported to be marked “DO NOT USE” and the reissuers are being true to those original requests

Good choice but…..No outtakes? Unreleased mixes or rare extended? Really surprising! What about songs supposed to appear on the second unreleased album with PWL? Such a pity i was really hoping for better materials instead of instrumentals…. Now I don’t know what to expect concerning reissues like All Systems go and others….
Again Pete Waterman reported in an interview there were no outtakes. In Donna’s career she had very few B-sides or outtakes compared to some other artists. That is partly to Giorgio Moroder’s style of working. He has reported not taking a lot of time to make an album and using all the material they recorded.
Also there were no tracks recorded for a 2nd PWL CD. In an interview, Donna reported that she had a great time recording APAT with PWL but couldn’t find time in her schedule to get back to the U.K. Wikipedia wrongly states that she had “a falling out” with them. The instrumental of “I don’t wanna get hurt” is over one minute more than the single but is unnamed.

I expected there will be an unreleased extended version of “Whatever Your Heart Desires”… I would have love it would exist…

All these reported different mixes. Well they might exist but perhaps there aren’t credible masters to use. Also, just because there have been snippets posted on PWL forums and websites doesn’t mean the entire mix is useable. So many times on this blog and other sites people complain when reissues contain vinyl rips or not digital masters. That could be the case with some of these “unreleased mixes.”
Of course Andrew, but in this instance the mixes referred to have already been heard first hand and confirmed as complete from those who have visited PWL studios/staff posted snippets from, the PWL library (sourced for most other PWL related CD re-issues).
Yes, who are these people that have visited the studios? I wonder about that. So much misinformation about this CD over the years. Mike Stock the other day on Twitter disconfirmed a 25 year old myth that Happening All Over Again was originally intended for Donna Summer’s 2nd CD with PWL. He said “untrue.” He also confirmed that yes there were 2 to 3 additional recorded songs for these sessions but they were unmixed and unproduced, so unfinished. Remember the myth that someone began about this APAT being a 2 CD set. Another untruth. I am simply skeptical about these people who have visited PWL and make claims that most of the time are untrue.
Perhaps they heard something at PWL but who knows it they are useable for release. Also who has the rights to them? Donna’s estate or PWL? That could be a huge sticking point for release. Many complexities to releasing “vault” information that we as the public will never understand.

I agree, instead of those annoying instrumentals of not so known songs there would be more room for the ONES one expects to be in a DELUXE edition.
At PWL they say that there are no extra tracks but I really doubt it! No unreleased Demo? Or not so good songs? Of every album a serious producer tries 20-40 songs and I can’t believe they did not do that with Donna. Moreover what do I do with the edits vs or the instrumental? For the last one I do not have tha calrec microphone (for real PWL fans: you know what I mean..))
Back in 1989 artists didn’t record all the extra tracks they do today. Peter Waterman is already on the record saying they recorded the original 10 tracks with Donna and that is it. Why is it so hard for so many people to be satisfied with what the original producer’s report? It is only the last decade or two that artists record so many extra tracks for the purposes of I-tunes extras, bonus tracks for countries like Japan, deluxe edition extras etc.
