Graces Jones / Warm Leatherette reissue bonus tracks update
The recently announced Graces Jones Warm Leatherette reissue has been largely well received by fans, although inevitably if you look hard enough there is always something to be miffed about…
In this instance, some CD buyers were grumbling about the fact that the hi-res blu-ray audio edition includes five bonus tracks not on the 27-track two-CD set (or on the 4LP vinyl for that matter). The tracks in question are:
- 1. SHE’S LOST CONTROL (LONG VERSION 2) 6.45
Issued as the b-side of 12” single 12WIP 6629, released June 1980. - 2. SHE’S LOST CONTROL (LONG VERSION 3) 5.45
Issued as a b-side of 12” single 12 IS 273, released May 1986. - 3. LOVE IS THE DRUG (SINGLE REMIX) 3.21
Remixed by Eric “ET” Thorngren.
Issued as the a-side of 7” single IS 266, released February 1986. - 4. PRIVATE LIFE (SINGLE REMIX) 4.04
Remixed by Paul “Groucho” Smykle at the Fallout Shelter.
Issued as the a-side of 7” single IS 273, released May 1986. - 5. WARM LEATHERETTE (FRANCOIS KEVORKIAN REMIX) 6.32
Remixed by Francois Kevorkian at Right Track Recording, NYC, May 1985.
Previously Unreleased Mix.
Universal Music have clearly been reading your comments and have been in touch with SDE to point out that although these aren’t included on those other physical formats, you will be able to purchase them individually from various HD online stores. So in other words they will be available without having to buy the whole package all over again.
Warm Leatherette is reissued on 17 June 2016. Fans in North America and Canada should note that vinyl and two-CD can now be pre-ordered on Amazon. You can read all the details here.

Guys -where can you actually buy the Hi-res files from? I’ve checked HDtracks many times and never seen these listed…
If you buy the blu-ray you get it FREE!
I can confirm CD2-6 Private Life Single Version had a dropout on the right channel @0:03~0:04! It’s also on the download I’ve got (unknown source)! But that’s a bit less obvious than the CD.
Someone succeeded in downloading the files? I checked CD1 was about 77m39s CD2 was about 75m57s and the blu ray audio only bonus was about 26m27s! I’ve got the 2CD set already. So if I really want the additional bonus of 27mins I have to pay the blu ray price. But if it’s not guaranteed to work. I wouldn’t take the risk right now. I’ll just wait & see.
And what about the drop out (the other Paul) mentioned of Private Life single version drop out? Was it on the Blu Ray, CD or also download?
I’ve twice downloaded the bluray audio files (11 gb!) for Warm Leatherette and the folder has been corrupted, with many missing and/or unplayable tracks. Contacted Pure Audio several times but they still haven’t replied. Would probably not purchase from this company again if it’s not fixed.
Reminds me of when I ordered Carly Simon’s Special Edition Bedroom Tapes CD from her website. I got a HQ download as soon as I paid for the CD. I already had the original CD and now the new remaster coming in the mail, so I could care less about downloading it a few days ahead of receiving the physical copy.
But then, I thought, “What the hey, it’s 2015,” and tried to DL just for the hell of it. Didn’t happen! Corrupted file. Carly’s site had no tech support and the best I got was a ‘sorry for your inconvenience’. A few days later, my CD arrived and now I wonder why I grieved myself with the DL??
Love Carly, hate technology.
(Hey Carly, why didn’t you include the remix of Our Affair on the special edition?)
That’s odd and irritating that you received a negative response. I sent them a very quick email stating I bought it at Rough Trade a while ago and was referred to contact that address, and they simply asked for address and done with it. Already received the replacement rather quickly, and I’m in the US!
Do the Grace experts know how rare the backing track for Comme Un Oiseau Qui S’Envole is? I liked it better than the strictly instrumental version. The vocal version isn’t high up on my list because of the French vocal which is just gibberish to me. Program all of the instrumentals, dubs, and the backing tracks and you get an interesting playlist. I’ve decided I am content with the flawed disc as it is. It the CD skipped and hopped, I might be more aggressive getting a corrected copy.
@Randy Metro, if you bought the one with the wrong Fame CD (backing version) then you entitled to the vocal version Universal advertised with. I’m not an expert. But I believe that backing version was previously unreleased. If you get the corrected Fame you’ll have all 3 versions of that French song. French is not my mother tongue neither. But it’s good to have them all :P An extra bonus/gift from Universal. They supposed to give us the vocal & instrumental versions. Now we get the unreleased backing version as well, hahaha…
@DaveM, thank you for mentioning here on SDE the incorrect version on Fame. Now I just received the corrected one ;)
@Gordon & others, who pre-ordered/bought the Disco (Years Trilogy) with the backing version instead of the vocal version of Comme Un Oiseau Qui S’Envole (Long Version) 4:31 you can send them an email request a corrected CD:
On 17/03 I sent Universal an email. I got a quick reply. She asked which product it was and the barcode. I told her the title plus barcode. Never heard from her again. I thought they were ignoring me since I hadn’t ordered directly from them. Almost a week later another email, of course no reply. Then on their site via contact a webmail. Still no reply but today they took me by surprise the corrected Fame CD with the Vocal version (clearly Grace almost from the beginning) ;) The backing version (mmm, ah ah and sung softly but no Grace) is different than the Instrumental.
Important: their emailaddress, title of the box with barcode and your address. Preferably mentioning about the 5 bonus tracks/mixes on the Blu Ray audio only, to put on an additional CD making it 3CD set of the new reissue of Warm Leatherette. Thank you in advance and good luck to your all!
Emailaddress: [email protected]
Subject: Replacement disc for Fame of Grace Jones’ Disco (Years Trilogy) Box set (barcode 0600753546482)!
Really? One week ago, I sent Universal an email explaining the problem and requesting a corrected copy. Within 2 days I received a reply that I should contact my vendor and have a nice day.
I have nothing to lose so I will try the info above and be a PIA. Nothing to lose, right?
PS: I have a few Flac copies of the song in question, so it wasn’t a huge issue for me; mostly the principle of having an incorrect track listing on an otherwise great package. I haven’t read anywhere about the rare version of the backing track that was included in error.
@Randy Metro, after I’ve posted here, finally an email reply from the webmail (contact on their) telling me to contact my online shop. From the direct email address above which got me the corrected CD. So I assume contact them on their website will get the standard answer, contacting your online shop/store. Direct email they’ll send you the CD. Good luck ;)
Thanks Griffin for your post – I keep forgetting to check my copy but you reminded me! Just as well because I dug out my copy and I definitely have the mis-press. It also reminded me to contact Sony as well – I’ve been meaning to (but again keep forgetting to) since Christmas! I’m fairly sure there is a ‘glitch’ on disc 2 of the Boney M ‘Diamonds’ DVDs that is a mastering error, not just a faulty disc.
I hope I don’t get the same response Randy Metro got, because ‘Disco’ and ‘Diamonds’ I both purchased on-line so contacting my vendors would be quite a hassle – especially as these were purchased quite some time ago. I live in Australia so I’ll start with Oz Universal and Sony and see what happens.
Another attempt many days later…
@Gordon, no problem, you’re welcome, don’t mention it ;) just a fan helping another. Please contact them/Universal directly using [email protected]! Do not contact via their website nor locally. Don’t forget to include the product title, barcode and your own address (see above)! If you are planning to get Warm Leatherette please ask them to put the 5 bonus tracks/mixes (Blu Ray audio only bonus) on an additional CD make it a 3 CD set. Many thanks & good luck. About the Boney M, I can’t be much of the help. Perhaps you can google around about it.
Strange, it didn’t show up saying my comment is being reviewed. When tried to leave it again. It said that I left the same comment already.
I have a PS3 to play the Blu Ray audio. But I’ve collected all my music on CD’s & all the promo video clips on DVD’s. I like to keep it that way. So I do not want my music on many various formats. Unless that particular release is solely available on that format only. If you give in now. CD might become a dying format. Next time they/record companies invent some new unknown format you’ll have to keep up with them. And paying the price they want. Perhaps all our CD buyers can wait for Paul’s deal alert when this reissue hit the bottom price :D And like the other said buy the Blu Ray audio to get the voucher for burning the 5 bonus tracks on your own CDR :P
If people do not buy the CD it is because the packaging has increassed the price. There is no way I was going to pay over £25 fir this. Yes, you are limited somewhat by the fact you cannot play the blu-ray as easily as a CD. I think thre is still time for this to be sorted out.
Fast forward to the ‘Living My Life’ deluxe edition I say – that’s the one we all REALLY want of the Island records years – lots of lovely remixes and dubs to collect together for that – including the FULL LENGTH Apple Stretching as featured on the UK 12″.
Of course, one wonders if Salvo will release a deluxe ‘STTR’, or will Universal licence it for a release? I’m hoping for Salvo as they’ve done a terrific job with ZTT re-releases so far. Is it possible to petition Salvo about this?
BUT – a deluxe version of ‘Inside Story’ would be splendiferous. I have an import 12″ of ‘Victor’ which is a lovely mix, and also the import of ‘Crush’.
Finally, Grace is reputedly recording a new album – what’s happening with that? And will we ever get to hear those shelved recordings from the 90s – ‘Black Marilyn’ et al?
It’s not just about “simply” buying a cheap blu-ray player and being done with it though. Many of us don’t feel the need to invest in an entire setup for the sake of 1 album every 8 months that would make proper use of it. Speaking for myself as an example, which probably mirrors what others are thinking – In addition to an admittedly-inexpensive blu-ray player, it’s also having a TV/projection system (which I otherwise have no need or desire for) and an upgraded audio setup. I personally see no point in getting a hi-fi audio player if my system isn’t tailored to it. It seems a bit wasteful to buy a special player meant to deliver 5.1 sound (not on this release, but many others) as well as video, and play it through a simple stereo setup.
I get that they want to promote the possibilities of blu-ray audio by offering it at a very attractive price point – awesome strategy, for sure. But it shouldn’t be done while foregoing the most popular and traditionally cheapest format (CDs), which they are well aware that most of their potential buyers are set up for and still interested in. As you’re seeing here, instead of driving folks to upgrade their systems (again, for many of us unnecessarily), it makes fans feel shafted and hurts them in the long run.
Why can’t we have Warm Leatherette in the Standard Deluxe Digi-pack Case with disc intrays like they did with the 2CD Deluxe Nightclubbing LP. I’m sure this option would keep the price down and keep the “”Deluxe” releases ALL looking similar in their packaging, PLUS we would get a decent image of the Original Album artwork instead of that image the size of a postage stamp stuck on a piece leather and discs put into those horrible cardboard inner sleeves causing major scratching to the discs every time they get used. All the other 2CD Deluxe Editions from Universal have come packaged in Digi-pack format can’t see why they just cannot continue this format for Warm Leatherette.
I’m a complete-ist – I’m one of those people who HAS to get all the tracks. So the bonus tracks (and the price for that matter) are sending me to the Blu-ray audio option. Although I probably won’t save any money because now I have to fork out for a bloody Blu-ray player! LOL. Although a friend I’m currently house-sitting for has one, so I suppose I could arrange to use it to download the tracks.
But I’m a little confused, the picture says ‘download voucher’ – can I download the tracks without a Blu-ray player? Do I get the voucher/code just from purchasing the Blu-ray or do I have to be able to play the DVD to access the download?
No, the blu-ray comes with a voucher with a code. You go online, enter the code and download hi-res files.
Thanks. In that case, I’m definitely going the Blu-ray option.
That said, I can still understand some people’s reluctance towards this type of format – for a lot of people (myself included) CD is still more convenient than downloads. Especially when the audio playback quality of their CD player far outshines the cruddy little speakers of their computer/laptop.
I’m buying the blu ray for the extra tracks but will probably burn CDs from the hi-res downloads for playing in the car/hi-fi/whatever. I doubt I will ever actually play the blu ray itself apart from once just to see what happens when I pop it in the player.
” . . . some CD buyers were grumbling about the fact that the hi-res blu-ray audio edition includes five bonus tracks not on the 27-track two-CD set”
Well why don’t they just buy the Blu Ray then? It works out as the most affordable choice usually.
Given how cheap they are and the audio quality on offer, I do find it a bit strange that some people seem to be resistant to buying a blu-ray player. In this instance not only do you get the most tracks, but it’s the cheapest format.
Spot on Paul but people like to moan.
Because I, and numerous other people, can’t play the BD disc in my car or any of the CD players I have in different rooms. I agree that BD is a great format for music but it should still have been an alternative to the CD. Or, as others have said, those five tracks should be in the CD package too.
I know what you mean, BUT not sure I totally agree the record company should be obliged to give us everything just because we want it. If they want to push people towards blu-ray audio, for example, they need an incentive to do that. However, given how expensive the 2CD is, I think it’s a fair enough point in this instance. If the 2CD set had been cheap like the Nightclubbing then it might have been different. They could have put some video on the blu-ray as extra incentive.
I noticed that both HMV and Base are selling the 2CD Deluxe Edition for £32.99 so that must be a set price and Amazon will keep that price and won’t lower it.
In case anybody is interested, the Compass Point Sessions 2cd set was available at my local Sainsburys (Leicester) for £3 earlier this week.
I’ll buy the Blu if the downloads are in fact Hi-res…
They are. That’s been confirmed to me directly by Universal.
The 2cd pre-order price must be in error! The high price is only because of the leather packaging?
Most of these songs are already available on the Compass Point Sessions 2cd that is currently available on Amazon for $8.42 new. $72 is delusional. Import or not.
I note the Amazon price has even increased from it’s initial starting point. Crazy.
OK, I am buying the blu-ray. Regarding the CD, given the choice of leathereete packaging or pachaging simillar to the Nightclubbing set, why not change to the latter.
OR, include the bonus tracks on a third CD and package it like the Disco boxset then?
£25 – £30?
It is an exaggerated price depositor. Very expensive.
True, but at just over $40 for the cheapest options (European amazon sites), it’s still wildly overpriced. It’s more than the most (notoriously expensive) Japanese imports at these prices ($40-$75 range). Who at Universal honestly thought this was a smart business plan? I’m looking forward to the music itself (via means that financially make sense, whatever they end up being), but this makes me concerned about future reissue prospects – i.e. low sales, low interest in future investment – though I hope I’m wrong.
$72 for a simple 2 disc deluxe version???? Are they completely bonkers??? No way will I spend that kind of money. I’m buying the a-ha 2cd reissues for $12 on Amazon from “other sellers”. $72 is a total no-go. Either that is a mistake or they are nuts. I can buy new 5 disc box sets for less than that. The Bruce Springsteen River Box is $69 through other sellers on Amazon. A total joke. Sorry, will not be getting this.
It’s not available in the US, so that’s an import price.
Glad to hear that they are listening and that’s not a terrible compromise. Honestly, though, considering how much higher in price the 2CD set is than the blu-ray, they should really be including a code to download them for free, maybe not in HD, but at least in a reasonable 320 MP3 or something. It just baffles me that you’d pay significantly more for a CD version than the new, yet-to-become-popular HD format. Hopefully they’re also hearing the complaints re: pricing and at least thinking about how to handle that. Based on everyone’s comments here, it seems like even the most hardcore/likely-to-buy will have trouble justifying the cost, and that doesn’t bode well for its overall sales.
For the price they could have included those 5 bonus track on an additional 3rd bonus CD instead having us to buy the 5 bonus tracks online! I like to have them all in 1 place the CD set instead of 2 places (CD set & HDD)!
@Griffin ditto
Agreed – I have no interest in buying the missing tracks digitally.
Yes, nice to hear Universal receptive to buyers after several poor shows on their part.
I agree Rob, far too expensive for a 36 year old recording.
Nice to hear Universal do take into consideration fans comments.
The CD still seems deluxe in price though…
Rob, agree with both your comments. I am hoping that a ‘normal’ jewel case double edition is announced as that deluxe CD price is outrageous.
