Tony Banks / new album, ‘Five’

Vinyl with signed sheet music folio available

Genesis founder member Tony Banks will issue a new orchestral album called Five, in February of next year.

Let’s talk numbers: Five is Banks’ tenth studio album and his third orchestral long-player following 2004’s Seven: A Suite for Orchestra and Six Pieces for Orchestra from 2012.

The album is a collection of five (geddit?) compositions written by Tony Banks and was produced by long-time collaborator Nick Davis. Conductor and orchestrator Nick Ingham (who has worked with the likes of Bowie and Oasis) was also persuaded to be involved after hearing Banks’ demos.

Rather than one live session the recording was built up over a number of sessions in London and Prague with Banks playing all of the piano parts himself.

Five will be released on CD and 2LP gatefold vinyl via BMG Records on 2 February 2018.

No pre-orders up on the likes of Amazon or HMV yet… but as well as the two standard physical formats, the official store is offering the 2LP vinyl edition with an exclusive SIGNED sheet music folio.

Please, please release a SDE of ‘Trick of the Tail – Seconds Out – Wind and Wuthering’.

Mark Nicolson

Good shout John. Brilliant era for Genesis.

Phil Morris

This is being released on the exact 50th anniversary of the first Genesis single. About the only event we’ll get to commemorate it – even though it won’t be marked. (After all, Rutherford thinks 2019 is the band’s anniversary.)

Gis Bun

I think they want to avoid publicizing the Revelations album. Let’s just say most agree that any album since that album is infinitely better than it.
[PS – I don’t mind it.]

The Golden Age Of Things

I`m in for that too DD2000, I`m not really a Genesis solo thingy, but I have about 90% of Steve Hackett`s output and that`s a lot. I`ve given up with Anthony Phillips after the Slow Dance S,E, I have all the S.E.`s up to S.D. Never heard any of his stuff prior and bought blind. That`s how I like to buy my music. I like to feel the vibe and cover of an album, it works 99% of the time but didn`t with that Tony Banks box set, won`t be getting anymore. Phil Collins? Don`t tell anyone but I got that box set for 11Quid, it`s hiding at the back of one of the shelves. I`m playing his albums in reverse order for some reason and shock/horror I like what I`ve heard so far (the last 3).

you’ll like it more and more as you go back..the last 2 were just awful

My Genesis family dream reissue would have to be Mike Rutherford’s “Smallcreep’s Day”. A 5.1 mix of this totally prog album would be so cool.

Steven

Yes, I’m surprised that a 5.1 of Smallcreep’s Day (with bonus outtakes, of course :) hasn’t yet been commisioned…

Adam Shaw

Agree , hasn’t even been remastered

William Gill

The cover looks like it’s for a suite of office related software.

Aaron

As a massive Genesis/Solo fan I’m really excited for next years Anthony Phillips reissues…I wish he was bigger so people would be up for discussing his work more!

I’d love to see these ones for next year:
1. A Harry Williamson Collaboration set (Tarka / Gypsy Suite/Battle Of The Birds
2. Missing Links 1-4 Box
3. Sail The World stand-alone set
4. Live Session box (Living Room Concert / Live Radio Sessions / Radio Clyde)
5. Meadows of Englewoord stand-alone box (Including the DVD)
6. Private Parts Box Vol3. (IX-X-XI and the new XII he has mentioned he is working on)

Steven

I did try with Anthony Phillips, I really did…I liked Geese & the Ghost and 1984. But, Wise After The Event? Oh, dear…

Now Tony Banks, on the other hand … :)

Steven

It’s Tony Banks, so I’m in for the signed vinyl….awful cover, though!

Gis Bun

Ya. Not a fan of his album covers in general. Although Genesis had some bad ones as well.

Aaron

awesome! Also really curious what happened to all the other reissues we were promised from Esoteric last year…got the box set and the box set – then nothing! I wonder if working on this new release is the reason they were cancelled/postponed…? Someone try and find out eh??

Dylan

Wonder what the album after this one will be called…

Gis Bun

5.1. :-)

James

I was hoping the next announcement from Tony would be his latest reissue (‘Bankstatement’ is a great album, ‘Still’ does not get the respect it deserves and ‘Strictly Inc’ has the epic greatness of ‘An Island in the Darkness’). However a new orchestral album is always welcome. Thanks for the heads-up on the signed folio Paul!

Rob

Really enjoyed Tony’s two other classical albums, so I’m really looking forward to this.

Paul, do you know anyone at Esoteric that you can ask about more 5.1 reissues of Tony’s catalog. When they reissued “A Curious Feeling” and “The Fugitive” last year, it was supposed to be the start of a campaign to remix all of Tony’s albums in 5.1 surround. Would really love to hear “Strictly Inc” in 5.1!

Phil Morris

Three previous classical works, counting The Wicked Lady.

Gis Bun

Would like to see them as well, but settle on the book format and not the jewel cases. Looks odd having one in a jewel case and the other not.

D.C.

Delighted this see him back in the music world once again!
