T'Pau / Bridge of Spies super deluxe

I just bought a copy from the marketplace on Amazon for £12.38 from the states and their is another copy there for £16.60. Just shows how much we are getting ripped off in the UK £26.99 for this is really taking the piss and i will probably have to wait for 10 days till it arrives but it will be worth it.

Oh forgot to mention, it’s available through digital retailers – iTunes (UK) have it for £10.99 (Audio only, no videos)

The notes by Carol in the release state ‘when we delivered the album to Siren, the head of the label hated the compression that Roy had put on it. It did make it sound harsh through stereo but when you heard it on the radio, especially American radio, which Roy was aiming for, the production was amazing and still sounds modern today’. SO there you go, the ‘sound’ was intentional – aiming at a specific genre and market. When you read further into the booklet, it appears that the recording process was very thorough, even recording single guitar strings and overlapping/overdubbing and constantly building the tracks up.

Yes, I agree it’s overpriced, but it is very nicely done, the notes/interviews from each band member is great to read – giving a lovely insight. Playing the album in the car, the sound is great, full of depth and power – hearing things i’ve missed before. Still have the DVD to watch, so not sure what quality of that is like.

Going by the comments i have read from people who have bought this the main album still sounds as bad as it originally did and no amount of remastering has saved it.

£26.99 on HMV now. Still way too expensive though.

Okay Neil thanks! So there are 2 editions! But what’s on the cheaper 2 discs edition? Did they took my advice putting everything in 1 CD & 1 DVD in my previous post above? That would be great! GBP20 for a DVD is a bit expensive

Just noticed this is £29.99 on HMV absolutely shocking price. Looking about i have noticed as Griffin mentioned there appears to be a two disc being released as well presumably without the DVD for around the £10 mark which makes more sense.

Hi Paul, are there 2 editions of this? 2CD & 2CD+DVD? jpc.de is offering Remastered Bridge of spies as 2 different items (both available in November) with different prices.

when A-Ha’s East of the Sun (2cd + 1 dvd) is 13.37 on amazon and this is still 28.99 – it really looks poor value!

odd have now noticed that two of the 29/10/87 tracks are unreleased, taking the songs from that show released to 6. I would have preferred all the concert to the B sides (which are all on the CD singles) – they were a fantastic live band.

Some cracking songs on this album, but it could really have done with a remix (and a 5.1 mix while they were at it).

Frustrating to see that some period remixes/b-sides are missing in action – any chance they can be added to the package, or are the two CDs already full to capacity?

Yes, but no (the price tag, 3 discs, and missing tracks)! For the price they should include their first 2 CD’s expanded with all the remixes, b-sides, etc plus all their promo videos & concert on DVD.

Don’t think T’Pau should be the only artist to get the special edition treatment on the Siren Records label.
The group most deserving of this would be Cutting Crew for their debut album Broadcast. The album sold over two million copies worldwide & they were the first band on the Virgin Records label in America to have a number one single with (I Just) Died In Your Arms.
I think that they deserve a 2 CD & DVD or Blu-Ray treatment as they have plenty of material as well as video’s & live footage.
I know Cherry Red did a re-issue a few years back but with next year being the 30th Anniversary of both album & song, it seems a no brainer. Please help make this a reality SUPERDELUXEEDITION

If the price goes down to about £15 i will buy this but for 2 CD’s and a DVD £29 is a total joke.

Great news to see this album remastered. Hope that the next 2 albums get the same treatment.

This is so cool but I am disappointed that there is only promo video of “Heart and Soul.” There are two totally different videos for that song. Not sure if one was made specifically for the U.S. market at the time, but there are two.

Like many of the above I’d like this BUT…

(a) the price needs to come down a bit

(b) it would be good to hear some samples for comparison with the original CD I have, to see what improvements to the sound quality have been made.

Nice to see this finally being announced though after such a long period of “will they, won’t they”!

Verry excited about this! I played the original album to death when it first came out, but it sounded distorted as some have pointed out. I am hoping this will sound better and not just louder :-)

By the way, “Heart and Soul” from the “Sex Talk” cd single isn’t included, that’s my only gripe about the track listing. There is another live version on the cd, but that’s from the Hammersmith concert, which is this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDY6Kc0q7uc

I prefer the SECC-version, but I’ve still got the cd single so I don’t mind much.

And as far as the price is concerned, I assume it will come down to 25-27-ish pounds before it comes out, but not much lower since Universal are selling the set at 30 pounds.

Sadly it does not include the slightly remixed US 7″ of the song “Bridge of Spies”, nonetheless I’m a big fan so I’ll be getting this.

Also it should be noted that if you order from the official T’Pau web store you get an A3 size poster exclusive to the store
store price is currently similar to Amazon UK so you may want to consider investing in the poster

What I am missing here and feel quite strongly about is the 12″ single of “bridge of spies” the title track that was a vinyl only release back in the day

also the elusive “US Mix” annotation does bring up the question of how different the US album (simply titled T’pau) mixes were of various songs and what else we’re missing here

there were two other vinyl only releases – “Heart and Soul” off which most tracks/versions are present here except for the original B side Taking Time Out (Live Mix) that is not featured here
and “Intimate Strangers” [sex talk as it was titled then] with another live b side not featured here – You Give Me Up (Live)

so a few missing tracks, I am mostly sore about the bridge of spies single mixes as listed above that I would have expected to see included considering these were never issued on cd to date

You can tell its Xmas time when bloated, expensive boxes like this appear. No offense, but they only had one hit in the U.S. and only a few albums released here. Virgin America was gearing up and needed some hits. Not sure why Rage wasn’t released. Possibly Virgin had some records that were easier to market and by then they finally had some U.S. talent to market.

I always wondered why it sounded so bad given Roy Thomas Baker produced both Bridge of Spies and Rage (which sounds awesomely clear), hopefully SDE will get an interview with Carol and ask her. As Eric, doubt it will sound better as a pig master is a pig master.

Still having the original album and the ‘Live at Hammersmith’ VHS, I’ll wait for the price to drop before ordering this.

“Heart and Soul” remixes are there. I’m in. Tempering my hopes for improved sound– the original album was pretty distorted, but if that’s on the master, I don’t see how they will be able to fix that without a lot of filtering. Bring on the whole messy mess, I say.

I know it’s quite expensive, but garbage and Phil Collins should take note of how to make a very good reissue !

It seems im not the only one who remembers a very bad recording in the 80’s productions …. don’t think it will be better than 30 years ago …

Too expensive like others have said. Should only be about £15-£20 maximum. Companies are really just trying to milk it by selling this at an inflated premium.

Seemed to recall the album wasn’t well produced back in ’87 – hope the box set puts that right. Deluxe set has been ordered!

I thought Amazon UK were bad asking £28.99 for this but Amazon DE are asking £83 for it. I’m getting really sick over Amazon’s inflated prices recently you might have noticed.

Though super-excited about this as long overdue and it looks comprehensive (though not sure sounds like all the Sex Talk CDEP versions are included) – its tempered by the fact it seems expensive compared to TFF, Paul Young etc – what do you think Paul?
