Producing and mixing the Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here SACD
A fascinating video about creating Pink Floyd‘s Wish You Were Here SACD which was released last year. James Guthrie talks about spotting a ‘missing piano’ from the multi-tracks and and Storm Thorgerson discusses his approach to the artwork.
I hope that this video clip will be part of the Documentary of Wish You Were Here that will be released on DVD and BluRay very soon.

I have seen the documentary (including the bonus material) of The Story Of Wish You Were Here DVD and that one does NOT contain this short movie about the missing piano piece.
What a wonderful film! Just the kind of audio and visual gold I have come to expect from this excellent site. I have the SACD – ordered online from Germany when it was released – and really like it; it seems to give more every time I listen to it. It certainly was a long time coming! Apparently James Guthrie says the SACD is the best way to hear his 5.1 mix. I’ve heard talk of ‘The Wall’ being mixed into surround which would be a real treat but, to be honest, I really long for ‘Animals’ to be given the 5.1 treatment as it’s one of my favourite PF albums. I sincerely hope Mr Guthrie and his team keep them coming….
If you’re worried about the ‘new’ piano on the SACD, the BD in the box set has the original quad mix which, according to the video, doesn’t have the piano. So everyone’s happy?
Good point Gary. The Quad mix was done from the original multi-tracks which do not contain the original piano, which, it has been deduced, was recorded to the mix tape live at the time.
Well that’s a total load off my mind for sure thanks For the update Paul
Wow that’s a great video. I am going to buy this disc immediately, but does this mean my very expensive boxset is basically incomplete and almost a waste of money as the version of Shine on was not the original . Geez I hope not , I’ll be pretty upset if that’s the case
The version of “Shine On..” in 5.1 with the ‘new’ piano added is on both the 5.1 DVD and Blu-ray in the immersion box AND the SACD. Therefore the Box Set is not incomplete, but many prefer the sound of the SACD over the Blu-ray (they are both lossless, of course).
