Paul McCartney / Back On My Feet demo

Just when you thought the promotional campaign for the reissue of Paul McCartney‘s Flowers in the Dirt album was over, Macca has just made another demo available for download from his website. This time it’s the track Back On My Feet.

Back On My Feet was the first song Paul co-wrote with Elvis Costello and was issued two years before Flowers in the Dirt, as the B-side to the single Once Upon A Long Ago. That single was used to promote the compilation All The Best, although it was never issued in the USA.

The CD single of Once Upon A Long Ago. One of the “4 New Tracks” was Back On My Feet.

The studio master recording of Back On My Feet was produced by Phil Ramone and wasn’t included on the two-CD edition or 2LP vinyl version of the Flowers in the Dirt reissue. It only came as part of the expensive deluxe box set and even then Paul didn’t think enough of the song to include it on CD – it was one of the notorious ‘download-only’ tracks. The ONLY place to find Back On My Feet on CD is the original Once Upon A Long Ago CD single or the 1993 ‘Paul McCartney Collection’ single-disc reissue of Flowers in the Dirt, where it was included as a bonus track (along with The Loveliest Thing and Flying To My Home).

Despite this, McCartney has chosen to highlight the composition six weeks after the Flowers reissue was issued. It’s certainly an interesting listen, since it appears to be Paul’s demo of the song before Elvis came on board and helped to complete the song.

and the news here is that paul put an already existing track on his youtube? THAT’S NOT NEWS

you know what would be, though? him releasing a new product

Wayne Klein

I appreciate that Paul puts these out as free downloads BUT would it be too much trouble to put these out at higher bit rates? 128 is pretty weak.

Paul has no control over the audio quality. He doesn’t host these tracks. As well, it is either the label or McCartney that are restricting the audio quality.

Oh. Unsure which Paul you were referring to but after re-reading your comment, I assume it was Paul the musician. :-) My second part of my comment still stands.

The tracks are 3
Back On My Feet (Demo)’
This One (Demo)
Distractions (Demo

Stop taking the proverbial macca, this is just getting random…

John Barelycorn

Bloody hell, haven’t some of you detractors had enough to say about the FITD release? It’s all been covered before and it’s very tiresome. You would think Macca had dropped a live cat in a barrel of boiling hot tar the way you are going on about ‘download-gate’. Give it a rest!

Stevie B

Yeah, been done to death a long time ago.

Sort of like the US political mess. :-)

Thanks for the heads up on “Flying to my Home” being on the 1993 CD re-issue. For some reason, I had no idea that had been done, and I popped over to Amazon and picked up a “like new” copy for 10 bucks! That was the track I was most angry about not having on disc, since it was my favorite b-side from the album. I feel even more vindicated in skipped the SDE now that I have a way to own the song I wanted on a legitimate disc.

Sir Paul, please note, some of us are not going to cave to your crazy-expensive SDE when you leave material off it. Period.

I wish McCartney would lighten up a bit when it comes to releasing lovely tracks like this. It would be great to be able to buy a (legit) CD (or CDs) of demos, B sides, live tracks and other unreleased material, not necessarily tied to super deluxe editions of his canon albums. I’m thinking of Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series as an example. Macca or his people seem over concerned about what they put into the public domain. Look at the agonising over the various attempts at Hot Hitz and Kold Kutz. They should try some more spontaneous releases – they could be surprised.

Antonio Ponzoni

Yeah why not release an add-on web-order only CD of all the missing material?

I just don’t get these free downloads, who are they supposed to attract apart from obsessives who more than likely want the physical product. If hypothetically, someone with a passing interest heard it and thought about getting FiTD they are gonna be really pissed its not on there.
Hearing a brilliant song like this in this form just makes it even more gutting its not on the Deluxe set for those that own it, when there was a spare forty-odd minutes on the extra CDs. Rubbing your face in the dirt more like.

John Moore

Any idea how the deluxe edition is selling- I have heard not that well over here due to all the hassles- pre-orders were way down and money being tight everybody is waiting for the monster box Sgt Pepper- pity though- I am holding out for amazon to drop the price!

Ben Williams

It would be interesting to hear how many of the super deluxe ones they sold worldwide.

It’s own to £105 at the moment

It Sounds better than the oficial versión.
Hi-Res of demos and not Hi-Res of B-Sides? Incredible

Ben Williams

Great we get it for free but odd they’re sharing a song not part of any of the discs in either edition of the reissue. Not complaining cos it’s free but feel sorry (again!) for those that have bought a deluxe edition box that should have included these demo tracks.

Hopefully that Motor of Love demo will appear soon?

Mike the Fish

That was pretty good! And the lyrics were above average too.
