a-ha’s Hunting High And Low super deluxe edition represented as 4CD set

a-ha / Hunting High And Low 4CD set

4CD set • New presentation • Much cheaper

a-ha‘s 2015 super deluxe edition of their debut album Hunting High And Low has been long out-of-print, but will now be made available again in November with different packaging and at a much lower price.

The new presentation loses the DVD – so no promo videos this time around – but the four CDs are the same as before. CD 1 contains the 2015 remaster of the album, disc 2 is packed with demos and the third CD concerns itself with commercially released material: edits, remixes, dubs, twelve-inch mixes, and the like. Finally, CD 4 contains an alternate version of the entire Hunting High and Low album compiled from previously unheard early/alternate mixes.

This new edition comes with an edited version of the original booklet (including an essay by Kieron Tyler and the set is presetned in a “10-panel softpack” which I think is record label speak for a big digipak.

a-ha’s Hunting High And Low 4CD set is released on 15 November 2019.

Ooooooooo! I was right about the packaging. (See below.). :(

So, Amazon U.S. now has a page up for this release, but although one can now order Lifelines and Minor Earth | Major Sky at Amazon U.S., the page for this release of Hunting High and Low says “Currently Unavailable.”

I’ve bought this album so many times, and have the large version of this, and it’s on my streaming service, so I wasn’t really inclined to get this, but I saw the deal here today for 15 pounds and it actually crossed my mind to pick it up for $20 if I could get free shipping.

I really would like to know why the U.S. site—the original Amazon site—freezes us out of buying what is available on their site in so many other territories.

As far as whether it’s Warner specifically, the 6-disc Prince set from Warner is available for pre-sale on Amazon U.S. Now, he’s a U.S. artist and that set has never been available, so I thought maybe it’s just a matter of still having unsold inventory of the previous HH&L releases?

But no, neither the larger 5-disc version nor the earlier 2-disc expanded version are available, they just have the 1-disc set at the moment. So what gives? Is this an a-ha decision?

Noticed there’s no Amazon US link yet, but more importantly I’m wondering if there’s something going on between Amazon US and Warner/Rhino. Both the Minor Earth and Lifelines deluxe editions are now Currently Unavailable on Amazon US. Same goes for Prince 1999 Super Deluxe Edition and Whitesnake Slip Of The Tongue box set, which are also Warner/Rhino releases. Pre-ordered both, but delivery dates are pending; understandable for Prince, but not for the Whitesnake set which comes out Friday. Anyone heard anything or also noticed this?

It’s the same in Australia. I managed to order the recent a-ha deluxe CDs and vinyls via a third party on Amazon who is based in the UK. A definite head scratcher. Looks like I might be doing the same with this one. I am also hoping they release all albums on vinyl in the near future.

No now. Now, no. No for now. Now it’s no. :)

So now there’s nowt no new audio? Got it.

In Australia we prefer the term ‘Yeah, Nah’.

Hey Paul (or anyone who’s done a comparison),
Is the 2015 remaster any different to the 2010 remaster from the initial 2 CD Deluxe Edition?

I have both and didn’t notice a difference in the sound quality. I’m assuming they used the 2010 remasters for the 2015 one.

Martin Kilroy

Is there anything on the 2 disc that’s not on the 4 disc?

Is the 4 disc edition worth it?

I already have the 2 disc version.

It’s time to give HH&L a rest !!!!

There are so many more interesting things that can be released for A-ha fans!

I’d like to see CD single box sets released for singles from the first two albums as those were never released on CD.

That would make a far more interesting re-issue campaign.

I would create the CD singles box set just like the one they did for the Minor Earth | Major Box released in 2001.

Dejan Dozic

I totally agree !

Though I agree, its a very well priced set if you don’t have any of the previous reissues and us A-ha collectors are probably not the market given them. There cannot be much more to reissue, though having the long versions of those previous unreleased 80s remixes which were edited on ‘Time and Again’ would please me no end!

Martin Kilroy

It does make Lifelines and Minor Earth, Major Sky reissues seem a tad overpriced!
(Correct me if I’m wrong but weren’t the last batch c. £13?)

Belvin Sweatt

Can’t wait to get it. Love A-ha.

Todd Richards

Yay! I don’t have to worry about this cause…I already bought it at a MUCH HIGHER price. yay.

Some right numpty’s here. Read the post.
Its CD. Amazon have it listed as vinyl.
Move on.

Rubber Tony

There’s a very good reason why the 2xCD version is still important. The remastered 2015 version of Stop! And Make Your Mind Up is very different in that it has all of the original reverb removed. You get a very dry mix and IMHO, suffers in terms of atmosphere. It’s a great track that I’d love to have made the final original LP instead of Train of Thought.

Mike the Fish

The early version of Adventure Tale and I think one of the demos of Hunting High & Low didn’t make it to the super deluxe either. I didn’t know about Stop! And Make Your Mind Up was different. I did wonder if it might be as I’d read it had had some repair work done on it for the 2010.

Brian Smith

are the alternative the same as what was released on RSD?

Larry Davis

Yes…it’s disc 4 of the set…

Thomas Scallan

I think I’m right in saying the alternate versions on Disc 4 were also released as a vinyl LP for RSD earlier this year.

Shawn C.

That’s correct Thomas – I managed to track down a copy.

Bet it isn’t a digipak. Only cardboard with the CDs nearly impossible to remove.

Of the two sets, (2 vs 4) I think this one is the better of the two. Oddly enough in the USA this is priced around the cost of the original set.
But I must add that XTC could have done all of this with 1 disc, and included HD and 5.1…..
The alternate versions is a fun listen. Now when this album was new if someone would have told me that someday they would release a 5 disc boxset for this record I would have laughed in their face.

Hazel Dean Fan

Is it CD or Vinyl? The link above directs me to amazon page with vinyl only

Steven Morgan

To be fair to hazel the link directs to vinyl and not CD

Er…….yes it does, Paul. Here’s your actual link:

It goes to the Vinyl offering at £18.99.

No. Definitely a link to vinyl. (Just trying to ruffle your feathers some more, Paul!) ;)

If it were actually vinyl, that would be the most amazingly impossible package ever, getting 4 vinyl ‘discs’ that somehow can fit up to 25 tracks on each one all for the price of a regular single vinyl record. If that’s what I do get, I’ll be very surprised indeed.

Amazon really needs a better system to quickly assess user corrections of erroneous listings.

And by the way you’d think the producer of the item itself (as in Warner, not Alan Tarney et al) would have the option to review the listing before it went live, or at the very least would have noticed afterward like all the rest of us and that Amazon would have a system that could at least quickly change producer corrections of erroneous listings.

Shameful. For what it’s worth I say this as a Prime member.

Great to see them doing this. The other box set just skyrocketed in price.

This is one of my favorite box sets ever! That said, I have only watched the DVD once, so I’m glad the 4 CDs are getting a second airing.

Larry Davis

The 2CD only has half the demos, not just missing the mixes…I have the box which thankfully will retain its value…looks like Rhino is reissuing Rumours again in November, as only a 4CD set, ditching the DVD and vinyl…wonder if Rhino is redoing all their multimedia sets??

So if one has the previous version, there is now new audio here right?

Incorrect, though I suppose you’re accounting for Shane posting a typo without acknowledging it.

There is NO new audio here for those who already have the 2015 multi-disc Super Deluxe. The band’s e-mail helpfully notes that this is the same track list as that larger set (minus the DVD).

Not to dis this set, as of course, for those who don’t have that one, there IS plenty of new audio that’s a must for fans of the band and/or this album, of which there are many, I highly recommend getting one or the other.

From a place of clarity and well-meant humor (though I risk sounding like a twerp) I’d point out he wrote “there is NOW new audio here right?” There is not now new audio, there was then new audio in 2015, but if you didn’t get it then in that set you can get it now in this set, which basically is that set without the DVD and large-format packaging and book, and it will be “new to you.”

Yes, as it is a post about a “new version” of a multi-disc super deluxe set that followed a few years after a prior multi-disc deluxe set it would be understandable that some would hope (if not resent), as I’ve read here about other sets that followed on prior deluxe editions, that because fans clamored for the 7″ instrumental, or the band unearthed an extra tape of alternate early versions, or someone at the label remembered a remix commissioned but never released or what have you, they altered the track list either omitting something else or cramming it in someplace.

So it bears noting in a way clear enough for people to understand it that it’s NOT a “new version,” it’s a repackaging of the old version and there is NO new audio. Which I would think you had done a few times over, including in your headline, but a few here were looking for further clarification and this particular exchange read more like a comedy routine about baseball, and that’s not cricket. (Can I say that as a Yank, or merely as a yank?)

Though initially reading it literally as he published it, when I saw your response I took you to have correctly presumed that he intended to write “no,” and that the extra “w” was a typo and/or autocorrect and not the word “now,” but someone else reading it might not jump to that same conclusion and instead presume you were answering that yes, now there is new audio, there is now new audio today.

Nice set. I found a copy of the 2-disc version last Summer for $20 usd. Couldn’t pass it up. I kinda feel it isn’t really necessary to have all the other mixes. The second disc of the 2-disc version has plenty of demos and remixes.
