Cheech & Chong / Up In Smoke 40th anniversary deluxe collector’s edition

The 40th anniversary of counter-culture comedy duo Cheech and Chong‘s 1978 film Up In Smoke is being celebrated with a forthcoming deluxe collector’s edition box set.

Credited with establishing the ‘stoner’ comedy genre, Up In Smoke tells the story of a  jobless, marijuana-smoking drummer who is told to either get a job by sundown or be sent off to military school by his parents. It was never exactly a critics’ favourite but was popular with its audience and earned over 40 million dollars at the US box office.

The new box set is very much a multimedia celebration. It consists of a 40th anniversary blu-ray of the film (with loads of bonus features such as a commentary by  Cheech Marin and director Lou Adler, featurettes and deleted scenes), the original soundtrack on CD and vinyl, a seven-inch picture disc (Earache My Eye b/w Lost Due To Incompetence (Theme From A Big Green Van)) and ‘extras’ which include a poster, a booklet with new essays by both Cheech and Chong and oversized ‘usable’ Up In Smoke ‘rolling papers’!

The CD of the album in this set features a new 2018 version of Up In Smoke along with a previously unreleased version of the same song with an additional Spanish verse by Cheech. The vinyl version is back in print for the first time since 1978.

The whole thing is packaged in a large format 12″ x 12″ six-panel gatefold package and this is a limited edition of 5,000.

The Up In Smoke 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition will be released on 20 April 2018.

May eventually get this box…Cheech & Chong are frikking hilarious (and they knew my late friend David Peel, and Tommy is in one of my fave ever movies, “Spirit Of 76”)…but I just came across the newly released 40th Anniversary BluRay/DVD of this movie for only $12.99 at Target, a steal…the DVD is not in the set, only the BluRay, so I bought this first…I don’t think I ever saw the movie in full before, so this is a first…

(my random obsession with those dudes & what kind of an impact their comedic flicks have done to me) just one example: sooo…I was watching TV probably “I Love Lucy”because I only watch TV for a good laugh& leave asmile on my face; (stoned) lol and there was a commercial/preview for a new movie called “Anhillation” , and right away my brain connect to Cheech and Chong “hay man we smoke that whole lid and I don’t feel anything man…… Awwwlll dude my man Curtis came through this time, I’m Anhillation Mann!!” Omg…. If anyone else can see where this is going, it’s a daily rendezvous with Cheech n Chong for me!! Btw…. Will it be available in LAZER DISC COLLECTION? THANKS MAN!!!

Man, I was 16 years old and went with my sister to see the film. It was the funniest thing I ever saw. Of course it was watched with enhancements. I have since seen this film close to every time it is on tv or with good friends. After a while you forget certain scenes and when they come back it is as funny as the first time. Man, I love this film.
Now where did I leave those enhancements!

“[W]ith new essays by both Cheech and Gong?” Who is Gong? ;-)

Haha. In all seriousness, this reissue is very timely, at least in my neck of the woods (or desert, as it may be). The City of Riverside, California, where yours truly lives and works, will in 2020 be home to The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art, Culture, and Industry of the Riverside Art Museum. His private collection of Chicano art is one of the best in the world. And with adult recreational use of marijuana now legal in California as of January 1, 2018, Up In Smoke is bound to have a renaissance of sorts.

man so funny. brings back a lot of memories. i was in high school when i first saw this (03?).
they will release anything today lol. neat box set though. gotta love them no matter what they are. always money to be made
