Chris Cornell / 4CD box set

4CD box • Unreleased recordings • 2LP vinyl • single CD edition

November sees the first ever complete retrospective of Chris Cornell’s career covering Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Audioslave and his solo works.

Simply called Chris Cornell, the four-CD box set edition (there are two other physical formats) features 64 tracks and includes 11 unreleased recordings, notably ‘When Bad Does Good’, a song found in Chris’ personal audio archive which was performed, recorded and mixed by Chris himself. Other unreleased tracks include live performances such as Chris’ duet with Yusuf/Cat Stevens on ‘Wild World’, Bob Marley’s ‘Redemption Song’ (recorded with his daughter, Toni Cornell) as well as ‘Reach Down’, ‘Stargazer’, ‘One’ and ‘Show Me How To Live’.

The set includes a 54-page booklet with unreleased photos and sleeve note contributions by Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, Tom Morello, Mike McCready and Brendan O’Brien. The box comes wrapped in a custom die-cut o-card that “showcases Seattle with tree-line graphics on the front and other various cities Chris lived in throughout his life on the back.”

A 17-track version of Chris Cornell is also available on single CD and 2LP vinyl. This will be released on 16 November 2018.

Waiting for the SDE Box Set price to come down. It will. I’m certain, but it’s a must have for me as a SG/Cornell fan. Glad I got to see him live on a number of occasions. What a talent.

Personally I think track list is thorough only thing I’ve added nearly forgot my broken heart Cornell lives 4ever thru all his music Kim Thayil keep jammin bro

Sheldon Krahn

I’m really surprised the Johnny Cash tribute song isn’t on this. Unfortunate, given it was one of his final recordings and an absolute jewel in Chris’s crown. I just hate that this happening at all as I wish the clock could be turned back and he was still with us.

Alan Lee

Someone questioned if there were any early Soundgarden tracks which could’ve been included? – well, last year before Cornell’s death, Kim Thayil had planned to release an album of old rare stuff which hadn’t been heard before – apparently there’s a lot of stuff from their 1984-87 period which was never released. Cornell’s death put paid to that. I still think that stuff will see the light of day eventually, as well as the 6 songs they had worked on last year for a new album, but if it comes out it will be under the Soundgarden name.

Kim Thayil has confirmed that he’s working on their early stuff as well as some live material. He stated that their EP, Screaming Life was in fact meant to be an album but Sub Pop encouraged them to do an EP instead as it was common amongst the indie-punk crowd. Apparently songs were left off it. Louder Than Live is also due to appear.

I’m not trying to be clever, but surely this is just a ‘retrospective’ or compilation? The way they have said a ‘complete retrospective’ sounds like it’s a box set of all his solo, Soundgarden, Audioslave albums etc…
Now THAT would have been interesting!

Hello, Iam a true loyal fan of Chris and ALL of the earily and the very latest music and bands he has ever been apart of, Ever!! 50-50 chance I will buy it in November’s release. If I once again look over All of the song lists and there is more songs that I Have Not Heard, verses songs that I Have Heard then, I will most surely purchase the CD set. Still really wish I knew WHY Chris left the F****** planet. Regardless, All of the music Chris gave us and all that raw love he gave us is surpassed even by Elvis. Love ya Chris But hurt as Hell!@ Peace Out.

As a huge fan, I don’t mind the fact that a lot of these have been previously released, just like many artist dead or alive have done. The amount of unreleased material is minimal, but there may not of been enough of a song to bring to the table. As for someone wanting to know, if there was any music from the grunge era that could of gone on here, I’m assuming the person means, unreleased recordings, I think not, I’d say that if there was any unreleased music from the grunge era, 85 to 95, it would of made the cut, because that would of been a great selling point for this album. Everyone has a different take, on what was Sounddardens sound, for me personally, they had their own sound, to me they didn’t sound like other so called grunge bands. What is grunge ” A mix of alterative rock and heavy metal” Imy definitely keen on buying the setime, it can go next to my other albums from other bands, that were brought out after the death of their frontman. DOORS, HENDRIX, JOPLIN, to name a couple

A great idea, even if it is doing the predictable cashing in on an artist’s death, but the tracklisting is a bit ropey. The cover of Billie Jean is woeful and doesn’t really belong on the single CD when there could’ve been something decent in its place. As a boxset track it makes a bit more sense.

As an aside, there’s a bit of Sheffield where grunge is alive and well. A band called Dead Blonde Stars do a great impression of Alice in Chains with Chris Cornell on vocals.

I actually think his ‘billy jean’ cover is one of the best things he’s done, and it is also on of the best billy jean covers ever made. He also did a wonderful cover of ‘I will always love you’ just after Whitney Houston passed away. You can find it on youtube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOvH5LSH9Sw), and it’s truly amazing. Also his audience only realizes what he’s covering once the chorus kicks in.

Will probably get the single cd version. Or the superdeluxe if it gets much cheaper.

I once went to see Audioslave live in that there London and they did some Rage Against the Machine songs. Now they were covers worth having. Shame that none of those made the cut…

I’m a little underwhelmed. A lot of the previously released material is so unnecessary. Why not give us a solo acoustic version of “Hunger Strike”? Is there anything from the early Seattle grunge days that could have been included? This is… just… blah.
