Hi Paul

I just came back from my recordrd store. The box set is not out yet. When will it be released?

Thanks
Alfred

Brilliant.Would universal consider some super delux issues of “out of the blue” & “a new world record”?

Chris Squires

I would hazard a guess that there isn’t any extra material or certainly not enough to make an SDE out of either album. They are exactly the kind of brilliant albums that would suit a 4 or 5 disc set but my understanding is that any extra material there is, has already been used on the CDs that formed The Classic Albums collection.

And to be honest if it ended up anything like Hotel California with a few live tracks tagged on here and there and stuff we already have then I would prefer Jeff retained his credibility and massive goodwill and didn’t bother.

AndyB

Question: are there any songs exclusive to this set not already available on CD?

Derek Langsford

Hard to be completely sure, as several singles had subtle differences from album versions, but comparing track lengths to those from the jefflynnesongs website it looks like most have been issued on CD. My only question would be if the 0.04 radio intro has been edited off Mr. Blue Sky. All my CD versions have it, and the versions run from 5:00 to 5:04 whereas the single version was 5:01. With the editing software it would be possible to take off the CD version. Notwithstanding that almost all are on CD, they are on various releases of different sound quality. A uniformly and well-produced singles collection would be appreciated (as would a CD release of the full Secret Messages).

Paul Kent

@Derek – a complete singles collection does exist: 1997’s Light Years. It has the single edits of all UK/US releases, plus Across The Border which was scheduled but then scrapped. It’s certainly the best hits compilation of a very large bunch.

Derek Langsford

Hi Paul: I forgot I had that set, as well as the Ultimate Collection, Essential Collection, and All over the World which all tried to do something similar. I think I misread the comment on jefflynnesongs. It says the rain and the radio tuning were edited, and not the “morning, latest forecast calls for blue skies” which is how the song is presented on these compilations. The new singles set already is assessed at tht site.

The compilations fight to fit their selections on two CDs. Light Years misses It’s Over and Rain is Falling which were US singles and several other songs were released as singles in minor markets though most were just album versions.

Light Years is from 1997 and predates the remasters from 2006, the Essential Collection is painful to listen to (brickwalled?), and the post remaster compilations just used album versions and the “new” version of Xanadu. So I think there is still room for a new singles compilation, properly remastered.

I have made my own compilation that fits on two CDs with personally edited versions of It’s Over and Rain is Falling and the 7″ mix of Mr Radio which as also scrapped but I couldn’t fit Across the Border on it.

Some would suggest the full Secret Messages didn’t even make it to the double vinyl, and possibly the interludes not in the right order either.

Carl

I have all the singles and many many variants from different countries it was a mania of mine back in the day to collect them as the sleeves were often different depending on the country .Its a nice set and surely aimed at the next generation of fans.

Cosmo Castanza

A New World Record was my first album purchase , quickly followed by the double blue vinyl version of Out Of The Blue.
I have umpteen copies of Mr Blue Sky on blue vinyl , rescued from charity shops , all the other singles from the album including Sweet Talkin’ Woman on 7″ and 12″ purple vinyl and the wonderful ELO EP.

With the latest never ending Bowie releases , White Album etc, I can give this one a miss.

Colin

Bluebird is Dead is a superb song for a B Side. Could easily have been an A. Classic ELO!

Florian M. Kranz

For me ELO in an album band. I have the (almost complete) album box (29€ in Germany). I’m fine with it.

Jarmo Keranen

I agree with you. And you don’ t want ever again hear the single version of Roll Over Beethoven if you hear the longer album version once!

BSR

Find me the one ELO fan that doesn’t have all these songs two or three times over? And at that price? I LOVE ELO but ridiculous is too weak a word to describe this.

BRENEZ Alain

Bought it from the Jeff Lynne store and received it just the day after its release. Good quality, no surprises. I haven’t listened to any of the singles yet so can’t tell you about the sound quality. Most of the sleeves are plain ones or with just the record label logo as prior to 1977/78, almost all the UK singles were in plain sleeves. It’s only after the punk/new wave area that the record labels started to release picture sleeves. So only the ‘Out of the Blue’ singles have picture sleeves. But hey this is ELO; so if you’re a fan, you need to have this. I attended Jeff Lynne’s concert in Amsterdam a couple of weeks ago and this was great, although a little bit short (‘only’ 1 hour and 35 minutes).

Mirko

When I have got the information about this box via newsletter from Jeff Lynne I hoped to get the box everywhere. But this was an illusion. I found this box on ebay last weekend The stores were everytime in the uk.I bought this box in such a store because the shipping cost to Europe ( Italy for me) are too high in the Jeff Lynne store! Will there not be a world wide release? P

Mark Levy

How about a cd version of this in minature replica sleeves?

Gary Russell

I’m with Mark Levy. An identical CD box set would be an instant purchase. But as we didnt get a cd version of the Secret Messages vinyl, I’m not holding out hope for this
