John Williams / Star Wars: Ultimate Soundtrack Collection box sets

Early next year, Sony Music Classical will release the original soundtracks of Star Wars Episodes I – VI in new extensive deluxe vinyl and CD box sets.

Star Wars: The Ultimate Vinyl Collection will be an 11LP box and includes each of John Williams’ six film soundtracks from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace to Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi in deluxe gatefold sleeves faithfully replicating the original artwork.

The audio for these was transferred from the original masters using the highest resolution (up to 192kHz/24bit) and pressed on 180gram vinyl. The records come in a black, soft-touch laminated slipcase with an embossed, hot silver foil Star Wars logo and includes a digital download card for one complete box set (all six soundtracks). This is the first time all six Star Wars original soundtracks have been available on vinyl in one complete box set.

If vinyl isn’t your thing, then there will also be an CD version of the Star Wars: The Ultimate Soundtrack Collection that contains 10 CDs and a DVD.

The six soundtracks are on nine CDs and packaged in mini-LP CD album jackets and there is a bonus CD featuring a new audio interview with Harrison Ford and an interview with John Williams. The DVD, Star Wars: A Musical Journey, is a one hour special hosted by actor Ian McDiarmid (Chancellor Palpatine) highlighting select musical themes alongside key sequences from the films. This set also comes with a fold-out poster and three collectable stickers.

Star Wars: The Ultimate Vinyl/Soundtrack Collection box sets will be released on 8 January 2016.

Does anyone Know, How Many Star Wars: The Ultimate Vinyl Collection Boxes were released?

[…] on from the CD and vinyl  Star Wars boxes issued in early January, the market is about to become flooded with various individual vinyl releases related to the […]

Dave

This might be a stupid question… But why do the vinyls have less tracks and tracks in different orders??
Are the vinyl editions shorter than the CDs in length because of the limited space on the vinyl? Or am I missing something?

laurence culley

The vinyl set is the one I would go for with this release, for the uniqueness of having episodes 2 and 3 on vinyl, and hopefully a better pressing of the Empire Strikes Back, compared to the Japan vinyl I still have. The CD set I see as being rather pointless, they are only releasing the single cd of episode one, meaning we are missing nearly 70 minutes of music which has already been released, and I have the cd of episode 2 that has the bonus track of the Conveyor Belt, which isn’t in this presentation either, complete with the shortened Musical Journey, the inclusion of the bonus cd featuring the interviews is not worth the expense. Sony dropped the ball with this set. they should be releasing all six films as 2 cd sets, including the full Musical Journey and to really make me buy it, the original 3 soundtrack presentations of Star Wars (1977), Empire (1980) and Jedi (1983) on re-mastered CDs, meaning the world premier release of the original Empire on CD too.

As a moderate Star Wars fans – but a big soundtracks fan – what I’m looking for is a “Supreme Court”-style judgement on this release: Is this the release I can get, and safely ditch all of my previous versions? Is there anything “new” here? What are the selling points for someone like me? I’ve bought the vast majority of this material multiple times before but I’m willing to shell out again if there is substantial value to be had (in terms of content including but not limited to previously unreleased material, higher fidelity, surround sound, Blu Ray audio, lossless digital, remastering from original session tapes, music specially composed for the special editions that wasn’t on the original albums, etc.)… From what I can see so far, this seems like a “pass.” Frowny-Jedi-Emoticon.

I really find it disappointing that soundtracks, having a 5.1 mix available anyway, are not being released at least in a lossy surround format, if they are released as deluxe editions anyway. Especially those from Star Wars or other cult films. Like the wonderful LOTR Editions. Hopefully they will consider a cd/blu ray combo one day.

Jim

What I mean is that there is no way that I need this but I’m still strangely drawn to it.

AMC

Remixed by George Lucas.

Jim

OK, so I have Star Wars and Empire on vinyl, the 4 CD box, the special edition trilogy double CDs, the prequel CDs (including the Musical Journey DVD) and the Phantom Menace Ultimate Edition double CD. So, in theory, there’s nothing really here for me. But still…

Dominic

What on Dagobah do you mean Jim? There’s stickers man! STICKERS!!! ;-) just what every audiophile craves :-s

Bill Scruggs

I dunno, I have a bad feeling about this…

Steven

Should’ve perhaps guessed Disney would release a box set of these soundtracks at some point, although curious to note they are releasing them in January (ie after Christmas, when everyone is a bit strapped for cash!)

Curious to note also that they are limiting the vinyl releases to the original vinyl running order (hence Jedi is only a single LP), whereas the CDs offer the expanded running orders (at least for the original trilogy).

Still, am tempted by the vinyl box – but what would make it a complete no brainer (for me) would be to find out that the included downloads are the hi-res 192/24 files – is there word yet on the resoluton of the downloads, Paul?

Tom M

If they are going to the trouble of hi-res digital for download, it would interest me more if Blu-ray discs or DVD-A were made available. I won’t hold my breath.

John-73

Curious as to what source they’ve used for the Empire double-LP. I had read that the original album master had deteriorated (oxide shed) beyond the ability to use. This was reported as far back as the release of the superb 4-CD Arista Anthology set. Either it’s been repaired somehow, or they’ve recreated its contents from the multi-tracks. I hope it’s not been transferred from a 24/192 LP transfer… ;)

Steve Burke

It says “up to 24/192” – do we know which ones were 24/192, which ones weren’t? What was the lowest? None were AAA?

Steven

IIRC Jedi was an early digital recording, so I suspect the resolution of this title is limited to 16/44.1…

John-73

Jedi was in fact a 24-track analogue recording. Please see the following for detailed information on all the scores:

jay

somewhat disapointing that phantom menace will be the single disc edition. though cool to see episode II and III getting vinyl debuts (I think)

Alan Fenwick

@Jay

That’s correct, this is the debut for Episodes II and III on vinyl. The only other release I am aware of in the pipeline for those ones are from the independent label “I Am Shark” which is based in America. They did some pretty cool vinyl variants for Phantom Of The Menace as well.

Alan Fenwick

January 8th is my birthday, I spot an opportunity here…..

Simon Franklin

The DVD has been released before but as ‘a 70 minute journey through the Star Wars saga’ given as a bonus disc with the episode 3 sound track, it’s really something very special and worth seeking out
