More details on Pink Floyd individual Early Years volumes: 1970, 1971 & 1972

Pink Floyd Early Years individual volumes are being released in March. Below you will find details around the final three sets, 1970 Devi/ation, 1971 Reverber/ation and 1972 Obfusc/ation

1970: DEVI/ATION (5-disc set – 2 CD/2 DVD/Blu-ray

At the end of 1969 and in the early part of 1970, Pink Floyd recorded and mixed their contribution to Michelangelo Antonioni’s Zabriskie Point. Three songs were released on the soundtrack album, and a further four in the expanded CD edition in 1997. Never released on one Pink Floyd disc, this volume compiles remixed and updated versions of the Zabriskie Point audio material.

In the same year, Pink Floyd scored their first UK number one album with Atom Heart Mother, a collaboration with Ron Geesin, and the audio includes the first performance for the BBC, featuring an orchestra and choir, as well as, on DVD, the original Quad mix.

Video material includes a full hour of Pink Floyd performing live at San Francisco cable TV station KQED plus extracts from historic performances of Atom Heart Mother, and material from French TV coverage of the St. Tropez festival in Southern France.

  • • Atom Heart Mother band-only versions
  • • BBC Radio session, Zabriskie Point mixes
  • • Concert footage and improvisations
  • • Atom Heart Mother original 4.0 Quad mix
  • • Replica memorabilia from the period

This package includes part of the original demos, when the project gestated from Nothing to Return Of The Son Of Nothing, as well as a contemporary BBC session recording.

Audio-visual material includes the original unreleased Quad mix of Echoes but also material of live band performances in 1971, including songs performed with Roland Petit and his Marseille ballet company.

  • • Concert footage and documentaries
  • • Echoes original 4.0 Quad mix

1972: OBFUSC/ATION (4-disc set – 2 CD/DVD/Blu-ray)

In 1972 Pink Floyd travelled to Hérouville, north of Paris, to record at Strawberry Studios there, based in the town’s Chateau. In two weeks, they wrote and recorded one of their most cohesive albums, Obscured By Clouds, the soundtrack to Barbet Schroeder’s La Vallée.

1972 saw the release of Pink Floyd Live At Pompeii, a film of the band performing without an audience in the historic Roman amphitheatre of Pompeii, directed by Adrian Maben. The video material includes the performances from the Live At Pompeii film, edited to new 5.1 audio mixes, plus material from contemporary French TV as well as performances from Brighton Dome in June 1972 and further performances with the Roland Petit ballet company:

  • • Obscured By Clouds 2016 remix
  • • Live at Pompeii 2016 stereo mixes

Just hate the original 4.0 Quad mix of ‘Echoes”. The instruments and voices stupidly fly around from channel to channel. No wonder this version had long been out of release.

Tino Stabile

I must say with all the different permutations of what to get myself for my birthday… well the news that you are giving me that Pink Floyd will now be issuing the box set with separate packages is music to my ears. This is the type of gift I was waiting for. Well, thank you Paul for the news and thank you for all at the record company who decided this. I for one even if I would like to own the whole box it would be impossible financially. However doing this way one gets to choose for the package that one cannot live without. More sensible in terms of price and an exercise in restraint and how to be selective is at play here.

Thank you very much Paul,

Tino Stabile

Does anyone know yet if the Reverber/ation box set will include the hidden 5.1 version of the entire Meddle album? It would be even nicer to have ‘Meddle’ and “Obscured by Clouds’ as stand alone book-style album packages in SACD 5.1 surround sound similar to the wonderful ‘Wish Your We’re Here’ album that was issued like that a few years ago.

Paul Kent

For those of us who bought the box, it would be a nice touch if they made the 1972 packaging available so we had somewhere to put the Pompeii CD – empty book, no discs or memorabilia included.

Agreed, and also the OBC CD has its title printed on the disc, whereas the Pompeii disc is title-free only with reference numbers and OBFUSC/ATION printed on it (This matches the rest of the boxset discs). So will they re-print the disc covers for consistency?

I find all that forward slash text style really preten/tious :-)

I had the same issue as JasonC, Warners sent through new Blurays but said that the OBC CD issue should be dealt with by the vendor.
I followed this up with Amazon, but they could only offer a replacement, or partial refund, so I took the latter option, and was refunded £57.

Anyone know if these “books” are identical to the original boxset – I might consider getting Obfuscation just to have somewhere proper for both CDs, and presumably the book-text has been updated to reflect the Pompeii CD?

By the way, the detailed track listing on this page only lists the OBC CD.

Jon C

Can anyone advise if the 1972 DVD/BluRay of Live At Pompeii is the film itself or a high-res version of the audio? I’m assuming it’s the audio based on Echoes being a single track. If it’s the video I hope it’s not the reimagined Maben version with 20-yr old CGI?

Phil Robinson

It is the directors cut of Pompeii but with Echoes put together as one track (not first and last as original) and it has the new 5.1 audio with it.

Johnny Feathers

I have the big box. The Blu-Ray is the film, with 5.1 audio. And yes, it has the CGI.

Thanks Matt,

I emailed those people (customerserviceteam@warnermusic.com), explained the situation, they never emailed back, but then a few days ago instead of the OBC CD, I was sent two extra blurays! I’ve been told (elsewhere) to take it up with the vendor. I’m not sure if anyone else has had an OBC disc sent from that Warners email..?

Matthew Collier

I have definitely read on one of the many threads that someone has had success via this method, but I also have read on various threads that others have not been successful.

I would definitely try this method, and not take the first no for an answer, and appeal to their sympathetic side, seeing as replacing a ~£400 box set (god knows how much it weighs!!), for one missing CD is quite ridiculous (though someone managed to get Amazon to send an advance replacement, they just took the OBC CD out and sent the rest of the new set back).

There are so many threads on so many forums, I never know where I read what about this box set!!

Matt :)

Gary Shaw

I find it interesting that a four disc (two CD, one DVD, one BluRay) boxset by the Floyd is £33.46, yet a boxset by Temple Of The Dog, with the same amount and configuration of discs, had a supposedly “fantastic price” of £56 (it’s now gone back up in price again).
Not a dig at you Paul, you and SDE are wonderful, just a sad reflection of what real music fans are expected to pay nowadays.
Obviously, I’m aware it may look like I’m siding with the ridiculous financial demands of Pink Floyd, when the full TEY boxset was a small fortune. I’m not.
I didn’t bother with TOTD. I’ll get the separate Floyd boxes at some point.

I was luck enough to get the whole Early Years box on that crazy £136 deal a few weeks back, so I’m not complaining…but…

The 1972 box here is has 2 audio CDs, the new mix of Obscured By Clouds and and audio mix of the Pompeii tracks. Anyone who has been following what’s been going on knows that the full TEY box had just one audio disc in the 1972 collection, which was supposed to have bee the OBC remix, but some people got Pompeii instead and OBC was included loosening the box in a paper sleeve. My Early Years box had Pompeii and no OBC disc, which is annoying. It would probably be too obsessive to buy a new 1972 box and substitute it into the big box. I quite like Obscured By Clouds…

Matthew Collier

The replacement disc people that people have been going to for the faulty 1971/72 BluRays, have also replaced a missing OBC CD for the people who were in he same position as you.

The contact details for the disc replacement service were posted in the original large box set comments on here, in November/December.

Matt :)

136 pounds, wow! Where?

Anybody which non-speculative information on the continued existence of the “hidden” Meddle 5.1 on the 1971 REVERBER/ATION BluRay, would be forever my best friend… ;) :D

I’ve pre-ordered 1971 REVERBER/ATION in the hope that the disc is the same pressing as the original box set (which had almost no content that I wanted), and will contain the “hidden/withdrawn” hi-res 5.1 Meddle album! Fingers and toes crossed!!!!

Worst case I am paying £30 for Echoes 4.0 in hi-res, but I’ll be very upset if I would have to buy the large boxset, just to get Meddle 5.1 (5 tracks!).

[…] These sets do of course offer a wealth of outtakes and demos from the band’s early albums including The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, A Saucerful Of Secrets, Meddle and Atom Heart Mother. The first three volumes – 1965-1967, 1968, 1969 – are summarised below (full track listings at the bottom), and the final trio – 1970,1971 and 1972 – are tackled on a separate post.
