Pet Shop Boys announce 2CD special edition of Hotspot and signed prints

Pet Shop Boys / Hotspot signed

The Pet Shop Boys have ramped up the marketing for their forthcoming album Hotspot by announcing a ‘special edition’ two-CD version (and cassette) on their website and incentivising fans with the promise of a ‘hand signed print’ with any format ordered via their shop before Christmas.

The two-CD special edition offers a bonus disc of instrumentals of every track on the album (something they did previously with 2012’s Elysium) and the cassette edition – while largely pointless – at least looks pretty cool.

It’s an interesting development and underlines how important signed items can be in terms of securing a high chart position. Surprisingly, given both their popularity during their ‘imperial’ phase (1987-1990) and the ongoing loyalty of their fans, the Pet Shop Boys have only ever had one number one album in the UK* – 1993’s Very. By way of contrast Erasure had four number one albums IN A ROW between 1988 and 1994!

Neil Tenant and Chris Lowe will be hoping they can reach the top spot again and improve on the number three peak of 2016’s Super. There were some signed CD and vinyl editions of that album available too, but you had to turn up in person at their ‘pop-up’ shop in Hoxton, London to secure one.

Hotspot is released on 24 January 2020. Head to the Pet Shop Boys online shop before midday (GMT) on 24 December to secure an order with the signed print (the 2CD set appears to be exclusive to their store, also). Standard pre-orders from other channels are below. The ‘Burning the Heather’ single is out today.

*The Pet Shop Boys had three consecutive number two albums in the late eighties/early nineties. Michael Jackson‘s Bad, U2‘s Rattle and Hum and Paul Simon‘s The Rhythm of the Saints kept Actually (1987), Introspective (1988) and Behaviour (1990) off number one, respectively.

Received my signed print today….packed with the CD…. nice and loose so the CD could rattle around the parcel and totally wreck the print, nice indentations all round…. what utter numbskulls these order fulfilment companies are !!!!!!

Phil Fogel

Does the vinyl come with a download code?

Japan bonus tracks now revealed:

Both available separately on CD singles

Anyone else having problems ordering from the Pet Shop Boys homepage? Before I get a chance to enter my creditcard number, I get an error message saying:
“Unfortunately an error occurred whilst trying to place your order number XXXXXX on our payment system hosted by our merchant partner Worldpay. This error was due to your bank or credit card company have refused to authorise the payment for your order. No money will be taken from your credit card or bank account and your order can’t be processed.”
Same thing happened when I tried on December 13.

Yes to be honest I was surprised that they were doing signed versions, that they were readily available when I heard about it, and even days after.
I also can say that after 3 times of playing the Heather tracks I am totally on love with them.
I can’t recall the last time I was this enthusiastic about a PSB release.
I know most people hate it but then again most people hated Release (I love it to bits) and I think Burning The Heather is a Release runaway, while Decide, which is as stunning, just completely the opposite sound, is a Super runaway (ish). For me this single is a 10, and I even love the remix.
So I have no idea what Hotspot is going to sound like. Just hope there are no weak guest vocals like on Dreamland.
Can’t wait!

There’s nothing on that link you provided that says there’s a free print – does this mean, there is no print at this point?

I,ve just seen on hmv website ” exclusive” 2 disc set”. second disc of instrumentals! ( but no signed print) just ordered mine from there website thinking that’s the only place you could get it.

I’ve always used instrumentals to make my own “extended” version of a song I like when the album/single is just too short for my liking (provided the 2 tracks are mixed alike).

I’ve also ‘refreshed’ certain worn-out, burned out club tracks by incorporating elements of the various remixes to make another unique version in the spirit of the original…so any bonus tracks we’re blessed with I can always work with one way or another.

I just get annoyed when an artist’s big release has different or additional bonus tracks spread across different retailers and other territories. If I’m a big a fan, I will want to own them all. This gets extremely expensive when you add in the various singles configurations, exclusive downloads, vinyl, cassette, usb drive, and other
limited tracks released across various platforms. Oi vey. If I had kids I could never afford it.

“What A Shame They Never Did This Before When They Were Really Good” could also be a Morrissey or Fall Out Boy track if the Boys were to pass on it… :-)

They’ve just announced on instagram that they’re running low on the prints due to their popularity, might be decision time if you’re umming and ahhing about it still.

ay carumba – looks like they’re all gone – pre-order items have product code with NOPRINT at the end… that can’t be good.
Unless I’m missing something…

Given I expected everyone piled in, including x100 ebay scalpers, I am astonished the offer lasted more than 24H! I suspect they have shifted figures in the thousands now – enough to get the album to number one when the time comes – and so very much doubt Neil ‘n’ Chris wanted RSI for christmas.

Love that they are offering signed prints!
I ordered the 2CD and the LP. I will order the Japan CD as well, if it includes actual bonus tracks (not remixes).

now thats what i call a good idea
always wanted the boys signature ( they dont do many signings and even when they do they are mostly in London) so im happy also the single Cd is £10.99 with a print if yur really not bothered about the instrumental versions ill buy it though its only an extra £3

i bought everything Now from psb store. cancelled usa cd and vinyl
and bought 2 cd and vinyl from psb store.
i want psb to hit number 1 and love something signned.
i am a huge psb fan and would have bought their usual box set from
vinyl factory-bought all 3!!

martin farnworth

Erasure in fact had FIVE number 1 albums in a row between 1988 and 1994. 4 studio albums plus Pop! The First 20 Hits.

What’s Erasure got to do with this album ?

There are some peiple that mix all 80s bands into one bag :-)

martin farnworth

worth having a signed print. at least some effort is being made. but i’d like to know who listens to instrumental versions of albums. i don’t think i listened to the instrumental of Elysium more than once.

I would have really liked an official instrumental of Electric, Vocal works really well as an instrumental, and really should have been featured on the 12″ likewise, Thursday is a lot better without the daft lyrics. Generally the Relentless approach to instrumentals is more interesting. It would be better if the songs were mixed differently besides just turning off the vocal tracks.

Don’t hold your breath for Japan bonus tracks. Electric had only remixes in Japan and Super had no bonus tracks at all.

Daniel ( from Berlin )

“super” was for me a weak album. only “the pop kids” and “the dictator decides” were good in my opinion.
i will only now say that new b-side track “decide” is a very strong track. and both on vocals. great!

How much do you want to bet that when there is a Japanese release that the 2 CD edition will either a) have at least 2 bonus tracks (one will probably be a remix) or b) there will be an instrumental of the bonus track(s) on CD 1? Either way, I’m going to wait to see what the Japanese pressing holds.

It seems not getting to #1 can sometimes be self-caused:

“Yes debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 27,639 copies, the duo’s highest-placing album since Bilingual (1996). Early sales figures predicted that the album would enter at number one, but its release was beset by distribution problems and Yes proved unable to hold onto its midweek position. The download version erroneously went on sale through the iTunes Store three days before its official release date, rendering 2,500 sales ineligible for the chart, while, the following week, a number of suppliers of the physical album reported stock level problems.” [from Wikipedia]

Saar Freedman

I ordered the 2 cd edition and fingers crossed the bonus tracks on the Japanese version will just be the bsides off the first single, as is often the case.

Could become unattractive for Europeans to order in the UK after Brexit. I think there is a risk for additional taxes for me from Germany!?

Possibly not. I’m not charged tax at all in Canada by their store, and have so far escaped customs charges.

I was sitting on the fence about this but I love instrumental versions (really enjoy the instrumental version of Elysium and the instrumental versions are one of the high-points of the XTC re-releases) so this has now become a must-buy.

Thanks as always Paul

And seasons greetings to all the SDE visitors!

Brian F

Thanks Trash! Seasons Greetings to you too! :) (XTC & PSB…such good bands)

Very tempted to buy the 2-cd version but I don”t like it is only possible to get it through PSB own UK-shop.

If UK start the Brexit the end of the year it could be rather expensive to get it outside UK
if you should add extra 30£ for tax/vat and local customs clearence, if Boris can’t make an agreement.

Not sure where you are but in Australia, the 2CD edition is now up for preorder on the JB HI-FI site for a reasonable $28.

Wow the b side of burn the Heather is amazing.
Almost regretting cancelling the overpriced 7” order.

Agree with Ed Jones. I ordered the new album immediately, and now have to figure how to sort out this issues if I want to “upgrade.” No “upgrade” option on their website that I can see. Of course, what they’d prefer is if people left their existing orders and placed new orders for the 2-disc version. Good customer service would mean existing orders were automatically upgraded to the 2-disc version. Never understood why artists treat their fans this way.

Auntie Sabrina

There website says that “We should be able to cancel your order or any item from your order providing the order is still in “pending” status. Just enter your request below and we will do our best to action it before it goes to our warehouse. Please note we are not able to cancel or make amendments to an order your order once it’s moved to “processed”.”

I for one would’ve been pissed if they upgraded my order automatically. I want the 1CD and the 2CD editions. And the vinyl. And the cassette.

Bonus discs are always hit and miss for the PSB. But because I like the Elysium Instrumental disc, I will buy this double affair too.

Just realising … Hit and Miss … now THAT was a great B-side from the boys back in 1996.

Elizabeth Ursula Hirst

This is such a good deal. Normally getting something signed would be part of the mega-deluxe box (I’m thinking about the price for the Jean Michel Jarre Electronica box) so to get a signed print with just the standard product is amazing. OK it’s a couple of quid more than it would be on Amazon, but there’s real value there.

Ed do you really play cassettes of new albums? Do you buy only the cassette or also the cd, if so really buy both but play the cassette? Care to share why?
Ps: i ordered the cassette too but will not play it

I do! yes! I like buying vintage cassettes but I love buying new ones which I do actually play! I dont buy CDs anymore, occasionally I buy Vinyl. Cassettes are something I grew up with and Ive always had a fondness for the format, remembering when I used to play and make mixtapes! I love how they are a compact version of the CD. Yes the sound is not amazing of course but there is something cool about that familar hissing sound and if you have a decent walkman the sound quality is actually pretty decent!
I didnt really agree with the comment “and the cassette edition – while largely pointless – at least looks pretty cool” to me its not pointless and Im sure Im not the only person who listens to cassettes!

Not overly impressed w instrumentals but ordered it anyway. I have bought all the 2cd’s and 3cd’s they released over the years. They stopped releasing them when they switched to the new label so I am glad to see they are back releasing albums with a bonus disc. Yes, instrumentals are a yawn but they still release good albums so I’m happy I had an excuse to buy it. Hopefully next time we get a bonus disc with remixes which would be infinity more interesting. At least we get a signed print. There is some exclusivity. Next year we can probably buy this 2cd everywhere for discounted prices but at least we got the signed version. And I greatly respect the PSB for releasing the physical content they do. That should be rewarded with a purchase.

Should the bonus disc be credited to Pet Shop Boy?

anybody know what the 2 bonus tracks on the japanese album will be?

Why snub the cassette version? yes I know not everyone is buying them to play them but some people (like me) do like to play and collect them.
This cassette looks very cool and a signed print for the same price is decent!

Michel Banen

Excellent marketing and with those prices I pre-ordered the 2-CD with signed print. Hope they sell a lot of albums this way. I actually love the instrumental bonus CD as I rather have an instrumenand I hope thewtal CD that really lets the music shine then a disc of remixes. Way to go and how cool is it that the handsigned print isn’t limited to a certain number but they will honor ALL pre-orders up until december 24th with a signed print !

I actually like the idea of this. Better than remixes anyway. And nice that it’s in a jewel case rather than an easily-damageable slipcase :)

Bonus Disc of instrumentals (yawn). Honestly, who would care for that? Remixes. Yes. Instrumentals?! Pointless

I replace the tracks on my Elysium playlist that I don’t like with the instrumentals. I find it a much more satisfying listening experience

“the Pet Shop Boys have only ever had one number one album in the UK* – 1993’s Very. By way of contrast Erasure had four number one albums IN A ROW between 1988 and 1994!”

You just had to stoke that Pet Shop Boys vs Erasure war!

You just had to stoke that Pet Shop Boys vs Erasure war!

A shame they didn’t see fit to package the 2-disc set the same way Elysium was instead of a dull old jewel case. Still looking forward to it…

I’ve been looking for a signed PSB for a long time, really happy about this!

Peter Muscutt

I’ve always wondered what vocalists feel about there being “instrumental” versions of their songs/albums released? Like they’ve finished the record, then the producer casually says “oh yes, I’ve kept aside some takes without your entire vocal contribution, Neil, to put out on the special edition”…I can picture Neil being like “oh right, cheers, yeah – way to go making ME feel valued!”

On the flip-side I guess you have ‘a cappella’ versions without the music, so…swings and roundabouts! I thought the same though when the Suede ‘Blue Hour’ box set came out, and there was a disc minus Brett’s vocals!

Stuart W

no disrespect to Neil but I enjoyed some of the instrumentals on Elysium more than the songs! so taking a punt on this for the same reason…

Apparently the instrumental disc on Elysium was Neil’s idea:

On the instrumental version of Elysium, Neil said: “We just liked the way the songs sounded without the singing on them. Sterling Sound mastered the instrumentals and sent them to us for approval.”

The West End Girls singer-songwriter said: “Listening to the instrumentals, I fell in love with them. And as a matter of fact, it was an easy way to have an entire bonus album that you can offer. It’s probably our first chill-out album. For several days I only played the instrumentals. I like them as much as the proper album. So we suggested to EMI to release it as a bonus CD for an extended edition of the album. And last but not least it is our first karaoke album.”

Number two albums because of Thriller (part 2), The Joshua Tree (part 2) and Graceland (part 2), HA!

Timmy the Dog

I would or should actually order this but the 2 songs I’ve heard so far have so under whelmed me I doubt I’ll bother & what a shame they never did this before when they were really good!! You are right about the importance of signed copies! I say that but, ahem, did it actually make a difference to Dido’s last album sales?

what a shame they never did this before when they were really good

sounds like a Pet Shop Boys song title!!!

Reference did it make a difference to Dido’s album sales, then yes it did as I bought it to get the signed print. I’ve just bought The PSB’s album for the same reason.

As a marketing tool there is something lovely in having a signed item, especially a nice print. All artists should be obliged to do this! They’d sell a lot more product. The times they are a changing for selling physical product – artists need to give a little out, to get something back.

Streaming only sales must scare artists who are trying to pay the bills. Rather than milk the consumer who is keeping the physical market going with ever higher pricing, try being smarter, like the signed print approach, and look after the generation who still buy phyical products. Good luck selling physical product to many of the youth of today.

Great! Ordered Vinyl and special CD. And this time no one can complain. All formats comes with a signed print ;-)

Ed Jones

I do find it a little frustrating when “early adopters” are penalised or inconvenienced in this way. I pre-ordered this weeks ago, and now there is a superior version of the CD which means I will have to cancel my existing order. Not the end of the world, but still a bit annoying. Any ideas about the bonus tracks on the Japan CD at this stage?

Ed Jones, I was just wondering about your case (for curiosity, I haven’t ordered anything yet).
I would try to contact them to complain and ask them if they can offer you an “upgrade” to the 2CD version. But then you would have to give them your credit card number by email…
Maybe they will offer you a free upgrade? Or maybe they will apologize at least…

Richard Fenick

& this is why I have no preordered the 2CD set as I think I want the Japanese version instead

How dors one even contact the PSB shop to cancel or change an order? I ordered the single disc for 16.99 usd weeks ago, the same price as this 2cd set. I would much rather have both discs.
