R.E.M. vinyl reissues

R.E.M. are to reissue three early albums on vinyl in July…

The albums in question are B-sides/rarities compilation Dead Letter Office, the last studio album issued on I.R.S. Records, Lifes Rich Pageant and the ‘greatest hits’ I.R.S. put out just before the band released Green for Warners, Eponymous.

The albums will maintain original artwork and will be issued via Capitol Records/Universal Music Enterprises on 29 July 2016

interesting………..one thing I can still not figure out, as why there has never been a Japanese mini-lp CD release of “Chronic Town”…yeah, it’s a short EP, but i know the mini-ll’s are super detailed and pretty perfect and I have a tone of other mini-lp cd’s from Japan that are beautiful…..

Any info on the CDs that are being listed on amazon (UK+US) for release on the 1st July ?
All the warner era albums look to be coming out on CD again but I can’t find any info online re: remastering or extras ?

Oh I see, nothing to get excited about then! Thanks anyway Paul

An R.E.M. box set Paul? Really? That’s the first mention I’ve seen of that anywhere.

Without any numbers to back it up, I’d imagine the number of vinyl releases featured lately probably has a lot to do with that seeming to be the current priority of the labels’ catalogue/product departments – have there been many notable CD SDE’s missed by the blog lately?

Paul E.

Paul thank you for ALL of the reporting you do – be it, vinyl, cassette, mini disc, compact disc, etc. Nice knowing the options as soon as possible and, potentially, locking in a great pre-order price. As the “inventor” of the mighty price widget, do you think Amazon UK may be onto us? They seem to be reacting to your SDE Deal Alerts quickly and adjusting pricing upward accordingly. If so, how can we help keep ’em off the site OR kill THEIR alerts?

Amazon’s algorithms are so advanced and complex that the price of an item probably automatically goes up if more than say three people order an item within the space of a few minutes.

Paul E.

Excellent point. I do still enjoy typing the word “widget” however and had some fun with the conspiracy theory!

Paul, any full list available of LP’s HMV will have as exclusives for their vinyl week?

Yes Dead Letter Office collected b sides and stuff from 1982 to 1986. It was released a few months before Document.

Don’t know about you fellas, but I love seeing the old vinyl LPs back in the stores. I don’t buy very many because of the price point, but they bring back fond memories of a simpler time when all this music was new & exciting. Some of those old album covers were glorious works of art, unlike tiny CD cases. I just wish the prices weren’t so stupid! I’ve seen prices like 35-40 bucks for a re-issue of Led Zep II or Beatles VI at retail stores like B&N. That’s just ridiculous! If they were 14.98, 17.98, 19.98, somewhere on par with CDs at Retail Stores, I’d be all in.

Paul, I’m beginning to thing you should rename to SuperDeluxe vinyl edition. Vinyl is becoming highly discussed more than ever. I’m a CD user myself.

Paul can only report on what is being released. If vinyl is what’s coming out, I don’t see what choice he has.

Bowie box?!? Talk now! (Please)

I agree 8 out of the last 10 posts here have been about vinyl reissues.

Actually, Document followed Life’s Rich Pageant and was the final IRS release (at least in the US). Am curious as to whether the rest of these early IRS discs (Murmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction, Document) will see vinyl reissue.

In the US, Murmur and Reckoning were reissued on vinyl in 2009, Fables in 2010, and Document in both 2008 and 2012. The last Document reissue was from Mobile Fidelity.

Had they been colored vinyl, I would have bought them. Standard black vinyl reissues are of no interest to me.

Cheers Kevin, thought I’d seen tht somewhere

These just happen to be three of the four REM albums I already have on vinyl. What are the chances?

One in Seven Hundred & Forty Three

Not a rumour.Press releases and all.First off the starting blocks was a deluxe Out Of Time in 2016.June and no details yet.

Martin Stockdale

Good – I have the originals of these. What I’d really like to see are vinyl represses of New Adventures in Hi Fi, Up, Around the Sun and Reveal – all very hard to find these days. Wasn’t there a rumour that Warners were doing something significant with their section of the REM catalogue a short while back?

Dave Butterfield

No word on mastering or vainly weight etc? Could be essential purchases if not last vinyl cash ins. Correct me if I am wrong but universal don’t have a great track record with vinyl reissues

On REM’s official site they are described as “standard weight vinyl”, I wouldn’t have expected REM in indulge in heavyweight vinyl cons anyway!
