After finally listening to whole box set, I have to admit I am quite impressed with most of the material featured…..although I could have done without the inclusion of the tracks from Cruelty Without Beauty LP. Somehow they just dont fit in at all with the rest – definitely the weakest part of the whole package.

I have the same issues with the dvd not playing properly. I think I saw somewhere that Paul was contacting UMG about this issue so presumably he will update us with the response and possible replacement program.

Ian Harris

Gareth – my dvd is exactly the same – I came on here to see if there had been a news item about it. It looks like they are all faulty like this.

Robert Levingbird

Lexer Music have told me that it’s because it has been authored as NTSC, and there is no PAL version! Why, I don’t know, but I have left word for them suggesting contacting Soft Cells headquarters, as their only answer seems to be ‘return the package for a refund’. They even suggested to me ‘quite often labels seem to do NTSC versions, possibly the assumption is that most people’s DVD’s play NTSC as well as PAL DVDs’ . I can’t see that for a UK band, being distributed in the UK and Europe, and bearing in mind what region coding was invented for. A ‘region 0’ would make more sense. This smacks of a mistake to me.

Gareth Pugh

Has anyone else who has now received their set tried playing the DVD? Mine is as buggy as hell… it freezes about 2 minutes into Non-Stop Electric Cabaret, gets about halfway though the promo videos before sticking mid-way through Monoculture, and any attempt to either Play All or Choose Track in the BBC clips sub-menu justbasnd the DVD player into an endless cycle of whirring and grinding but won’t actually play. I’ve tried this on 2 different DVD players (the Sony one hooked up to the TV and a mini Samsung USB one connected to my iMac and exactly the same problems manifest themselves in precisely the same places. suppose I’ll have to get onto Universal (from whom I bought my copy) but would be interested to know if it’s a glitchy copy or the whole print run is flawed? Thanks!

Gareth Pugh

having checked out their official FB page there are a couple of people posting about having problems, including one who describes exactly the same problem with the BBC material as I am having. Maybe a duff batch then?

James Dawson

Apparently the dollar is a little stronger against the pound than it was when I placed my order a few months ago, the same day I found out about it here. I just got an e-mail notifying me tonight that Amazon.co.uk just charged me a grand total of $83.63 US. Sounds good to me!

James Dawson

Is this box set sold out, delayed, or having any other problems that will keep it from being released on its original September release date? I ask because the Amazon.co.uk page for it has no price listed for the CD version and says, “Currently unavailable. We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.” Oh-oh.

Derek Langsford

I had noticed that. My pre-order is still intact and says will be shipped to arrive 17-27 Sep. Perhaps Amazon have sold their initial allocation?

Track list for the Club Mixes Picture Disc still available online (not from Lexer as stated already) as follows:-

A1. So (Hifi Sean Baltimore Basement Dub)
A2. A Man Could Get Lost (Jon Pleased Wimmin Mix)

B1. Insecure…Me? (Hifi Sean Mix)
B2. Insecure…Me? (Hifi Sean ‘Ecstasy’ Dub)

I was hoping for something like “Complete Studio Recordings” plus lots of bonus tracks, which unfortunately isn’t the case here. So, I’ll give this one a miss. Hope there are superdeluxe versions of their albums planned for the near future, including everything that this box set did’t include. And frankly, who needs megamixes or new remixes of old tracks? Fail.

Peter Muscutt

I take it there’s no actual keychain or snow-globe coming with the set then? In the era of the likes of the Guns ‘n’ Roses ‘Appetite for Destruction’ behemoth and Gene Simmons coming round your house with his boxset to do a Powerpoint presentation, that might be a good thing!!

Can someone tell me if really there’ll be deluxe editions of each Soft Cell albums? Not necessarily a big one, 2 or 3 CDs set it’s enough just to include all the missing stuffs in this forthcoming box set. I really love to know. Can I get some help? Please!?

This box has just 40% of interesting material to me. It’s almost totally useless. I suppose I won’t buy it. I prefer to wait for the deluxe albums that’s why I asking for help!!!!

phillip caffrey

Loved the “original” 12” box set from back in the day. This looks just as fab. Some things are missing. I think. Love their version of Youth/Sex Dwarf on the OGWT and hope it’s there. The Martin remix does sound fresh so looking forward to the rest. Great heads up Paul (again) Always a great read this site

The Woman On The Fourth Floor

I could nitpick here and there, but if that “7′ remix” version of “Down In The Subway” is in fact the slightly longer version of the album mix that was on some pressings of the original 12″, as opposed to the 8 minute one, I’ll be a happy…..person.

Andy B

Although I have this on pre-order I do feel that this is still a slightly missed opportunity. This box set is obviously aimed at hardcore fans. Casual fans would just buy a best of compilation for the hits. Most hardcore fans already have the album reissues. This was a chance to include all tracks previously released that aren’t available on CD eg the seven inch version of Barriers and the instrumental Say Hello, Wave Goodbye, etc. Instead we get the likes of Martin and the Hendrix Medley again! Surely hardcore fans have these already. I’m sure when Dave Ball asked the fans for input into the contents of the box set fans asked for the likes of these tracks!

I was going to invest in the new PIL set. This now comes first

Peter J

I can’t believe they’ve missed off the instrumental version of Say Hello Wave Goodbye with that haunting clarinet solo. It’s only ever been released on the original 7 inch as the b side so it’s ultra rare and would be a lot more welcome on the box set than any of the 2018 remixes or Cruelty Without Beauty stuff. It’s a glaring omission.

Darren H

They responded to this by saying the 12″ version is on there and that is just the instrumental you want, tacked on to the 7″ version, so it is on there in one form. Personally I’d rather have all the other stuff over instrumentals but I know everyone wants different things.

Darren Howard

Oh I’m not saying I agree with them. Just repeating what they said. I’d be happy for people if it was on there but I’m not personally bothered that it’s not. I suspect we will have Deluxe albums soon and it’ll be on there.

David Watts

He did get a few “feisty” responses in return though Paul including a couple from me!

When i listen to the 12 inch mix of that i actually find that clarinet solo quite irritating as it seems to drag on for too long.

Not sure about “ultra rare”, I came across the 7″ twice at a car boot sale last weekend and there are certainly plenty available online.

Are they stupid or what?
Hits And Pieces, Trials Of Eyeliner and now Keychains and Snowstorms – none of which have been released on vinyl! A huge disappointment for me for the last three releases now!

No they’re not stupid. What are they supposed to do, release a 25 LP box set so the anti-CD brigade can sit there stroking their beards and convince themselves that their digitally remastered 180gm plastic really does sound better. Yawn.

I LOVE this response!

Chris Squires

I don’t, it’s a silly vacuous post. What, for one second makes you, James, think that people who like Vinyl are anti-CD. I can’t recall any posts from vinyl lovers wishing stuff wasn’t coming out on CD, or that they wish the CD would die. Most people here who buy the vinyl have clearly stated they usually buy both. If available. I do. What digital people moan about is when something ONLY comes out on Vinyl. They do it on every vinyl post. wildeyedboys post is a rarity where an analogue lover is complaining about stuff only coming out on CD. There are far more CD only sets released than Vinyl only sets. Far more. And the stupid stereotypical view digital people have of people who like Vinyl. If you want to “Yawn” as you put it why not yawn at the amount of people who always mention a beard when they want to have a pop at Vinyl? I don’t have a beard, Paul doesn’t have a beard. You might as well start your post with “All black people are….., All disabled people are……All Gingers are……”

I’ll bet you a pound to a penny that there are just as many CDs and CD sets bought by people on this site that don’t get listened to as pieces of vinyl that don’t get listened to. Take Misplaced Childhood (or Joshua Tree), I have listened to the Vinyl set (signed) completely at least 3 or 4 times. I have only played the CD set (signed) once and that was only the demos disc and I didn’t get through it all. I have had From Moscow to Mars for a year now and I think I have put 2 CDs on. It would be lovely if people who only prefer digital would stop posting nonsense like this. Half this site is about Vinyl, probably half the people here are because of Vinyl whether as a sideline to digital or solely for the vinyl. So why try and belittle them with pointless (made up word alert) “Vinylist” nonsense that just isn’t true. But Scott appreciated it so, great !

A 6 or 7 LP set of the best bits of “Keychains….” would be lovely, yes we would only get a third to a quarter of the content but there is the CD set for the completist. The main problem is that the “powers that be” would pick the wrong tracks. Launch at £90, deal alert at £50 sold! I have mentioned before I would love a 6LP version of Tomb of Memories that SDE compiled a couple of years ago, it won’t happen but I am not angry that it only came out on CD, I am glad to get whatever I can on physical product, so please don’t talk nonsense about the other half of the physical product spectrum. After all how does it harm you?

LDVCDCass? All under one rainbow… The question mark is for the undecided and curious. (Laserdisc, Vinyl, CD, cassette and because of the placing of the letters we can include those who still have their VCD collection, although the niche CDV is more difficult to work in.)

Kevin S

I love THIS response.

Jason Schafer

Can’t all physical loving people just get along? We are all fighting a greater digital war, after all. There’s the REAL enemy.

No, obviously they can’t. ;-))

Nigel Bevan

Definetly must have buy of the year in my opinion, however would of been more worthy if all the albums been included in the package, or am I been too completist?

Michael Fortin

I have mine on pre-order from Amazon UK for $89 which includes expedited shipping to the USA. Amazon USA currently has this for $159(!!) not including taxes or shipping, although I saw it as low as $130 before.

Definitely hanging on to my pre-order. I just hope it arrives across the Atlantic in one piece, but I’ll accept some dings for that amount of savings. If you live in the USA I would definitely consider ordering from the UK.

I’m really looking forward to this and I usually don’t get excited about these 10 disc boxsets!

I had the pleasure of proofreading the content for the boxset book as a favour to a friend and must say it’s a fascinating and informative read and is in keeping with the rest of the set’s content.

I gather that Marc and Dave are really enjoying working together again too and are really revitalised by the whole thing.

More to follow I wonder??

Robert Lett

I preordered but missed out on the limited poster, can’t win em all. I am SO looking forward to this though.

eric Slangen

And there is a new limited picture disc vinyl out with mixes NOT on this box.

Michael Kelly

Ltd picture disc is sold out

This remix picture disc appears to be getting a more general release early August, and is listed by several sellers on eBay UK. On Big Frock records, and is supposedly still a limited run.

Kevin S

Sold out here but can be found on other sites. It seems to be selling quickly everywhere though.

Just for info, the 2016 Marc Almond Trials Of Eyeliner box seems to be unavailable (at a reasonable price) in most places now … although the uDiscover store still has copies for £75 + P&P (and look like this includes the bonus If You Go Away EP). https://store.udiscovermusic.com/*/*/Trials-Of-Eyeliner-The-Anthology-1979-2016/58PX0000000

Annabel Lecter

The first taster has been posted on the usual streaming channels, including YouTube. A new mix of fan-favourite, Martin: https://youtu.be/tttWlHalmVI

I’m looking forward to hearing Dave Ball’s Non-Stop Euphoric Dubbing.

One thing I only recently learned, was that the U.S. edition of Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing replaced Chips On My Shoulder with Insecure…Me?

I’m hoping the Non-Stop Exotic Video Show isn’t edited, like the first DVD release was. The ‘pissed again and it’s only eleven o’clock in the morning’ segment was cruelly axed.

Whilst the woodland floor video isn’t particularly exciting Dave’s remix from the original parts is really good. Shorter a to the point, lots of elements that develop the track more than the sequence-line driven original did. Prefer this new mix, and it probably justifies having the original appear in the box set for comparison.
Thanks to you both for finding and posting the link.

Auntie Sabrina

It’s got a BBFC rating of 12, the previous DVD version was E for exempt? I’d be also be happy to have this for the Sex Dwarf video. Are the tracklists now no longer subject to change?

No way the ‘naughty’ Sex Dwarf video will get a BBFC 12 rating. Although I haven’t seen an official statment about it, I’m absolutely positive that the NSFW version is not included in the box. And I prefer it that way .. otherwise the bulk of attention this boxset deservedly gets would be absorbed by that specific video. Which would be totally inappropriate considering the effort and devotion it took to compile and design this box. I have never been as excited about a forthcoming SDE before!

Annabel Lecter

The original Sex Dwarf video has surfaced from time to time on YouTube, until it gets taken down. Despite being referred to as a hardcore, pornographic video by “the muck-raking, gutter press”, it’s a lot tamer than the tabloids would have us believe back in the day.

There’s an interesting interview, with Marc Almond and video director, Tim Pope, discussing the notoriety of the original Sex Dwarf video shoot. You can watch it on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Fndbm8BzMBQ

The version that appeared on the first DVD edition of Non-Stop Exotic Video Show was the same black tie snippet, which first appeared on the VHS release. The DVD however included a bizarre animated segment, which was referred to as another ‘new’ video for Sex Dwarf – but, in reality, was just a cheap tack-on probably to encourage previous VHS owners to upgrade.

Despite the absence of the Say Hello, Wave Goodbye instrumental and the seven-inch version of Barriers, I think the Keychains and Snowstorms box set looks pretty amazing. Can’t wait!

The ‘full’ dvd tracklisting has been released on Soft Cell’s official website. Lots of TV appearances etc. They refer to Video Show and list Sex Dwarf in that context only, so guess it’s not the original full video.
