The Beach Boys / Fifty Big Ones + Greatest Hits and album reissues

The Beach Boys / 50th Anniversary Greatest Hits and reissues

The Beach Boys continue their 50th anniversary celebrations with a number of significant releases over the next few months.

On 24 September (9 October in the US) Capitol/EMI will issue two new hits collections. The first will be a single disc release, appropriately titled ‘Greatest Hits’ and will take in 20 of their most popular tracks, including recent single That’s Why God Made The Radio. An alternative, broader selection will be offered on a two-CD box – Greatest Hits: Fifty Big Ones. The packaging for this release will be similar to the Smile Sessions 2CD set, with a lift-off lid box and expanded booklet and postcards within.

In addition to these two collections, 12 Beach Boys studio albums have been digitally remastered (by Mark Linett) and will be reissued on CD, most with mono and stereo mixes. The albums are: Surfin’ U.S.A.; Surfer Girl; Little Deuce Coupe; Shut Down, Volume 2; All Summer Long; The Beach Boys Today!; Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!); Beach Boys Party!; Pet Sounds; Smiley Smile; Sunflower (stereo mix only); and Surf’s Up (stereo mix only).

These releases mark the stereo debut of Smiley Smile and Beach Boys Party!, while The Beach Boys Today! and Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) are being released in stereo for the first time in their entirety. This means that the new releases include the first-ever stereo mixes of several key Beach Boys classics, including Good Vibrations, Help Me, Rhonda, I Get Around, and 409.

If all that leaves you wanting more, then a career-spanning box set called Made In California will be released in October, although details of this box have yet to be released.

“This means that the new releases include the first-ever stereo mixes of several key Beach Boys classics, including Good Vibrations, Help Me, Rhonda, I Get Around, and 409.”

Count me in if there is a REAL stereo version of Good Vibrations, but as everyone knows, the vocal overdubs for that session have been missing for the better part of 30yrs. You’d think they would have had that on the SMiLE boxed set if it were available. Still, fingers crossed :) After the unreleased solo piano Surf’s Up on that set I’d believe Linett could pull anything out of a hat.

Does anyone know if the greatest hits compilations will include the new stereo mixes?

Chuck Connolley

No “Heroes and Villians”? WTF?

As excited as I am for the album reissues in stereo, I am still keeping my fingers crossed for a complete discography box set. Wouldnt it be nice to see their entire catalogue remastered…

One small correction: the reference to “the 12 Beach Boys studio albums” implies that they only made 12 of them. I believe they made 21 studio albums between 1962 and 1977. They’re reissuing 12 of their best ones.

John Manning

I counted 24 credible studio releases (plus Stars n’ Stripes, Stack o’ Tracks, Summer in Paradise, four live albums, Still Cruisin’, The SMiLE Sessions and a few other odds and sods – which means there’s scope for precisely 12 more remastered reissues. Makes sense for them to go for it. I’d buy!

Note the Surfin’ Safari, their LP debut 50 yaers ago, isn’t among this impending batch… seems odd for the genesis of all this great music not to be included, which is why I reckon it’s still to come.

Another reissue? Yes, there have been (too much) compilations – but I’m glad to see at least some of the original albums getting proper reissues, instead of the lame 2-on-1 format many are only currently available on.

I just hope that the remaining albums (at least up to and including Holland) will be releases later on.

And the opportunity to see Mr. Love and Brian swatting at each other on “live in concert at QVC” as they shamelessly shill yet another reissue.

Can’t wait for Smiley Smile in stereo, and really hope that the boxset will include some much-fabled tracks like Wouldn’t It Be Nice To Live Again :)
