The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Hexagonal Phase / 3LP vinyl

First time on vinyl • Luxury presentation • Signed print

In March, Demon Records will issue Hexagonal Phase, a new 3LP coloured vinyl deluxe set that features the last ever BBC Radio series of Douglas Adams’ classic comedy science fiction radio show The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Hexagonal Phase arrives on heavyweight neon green vinyl, and of course the packaging is consistent with the high standards of the preceding Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Quandary and Quintessential Phase releases.

This full cast radio play was adapted from Eoin Colfer’s And Another Thing… the well received official sequel to Douglas Adams’ original book series. It also features some original material by Adams himself and was broadcast in 2018.

This has been previously available on CD and as a digital download, but this is actually the first time on vinyl and in face the first ever publication of the original radio edits of the Hexagonal Phase, as heard on their original Radio Four Broadcast.

Hexagonal Phase stars John Lloyd as the book, with Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, Geoff McGivern as Ford Prefect, Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod, Sandra Dickinson as Trillian/Tricia Mcmillan, Samantha Béart as Random and Jim Broadbent as Marvin, with a guest cast including Jane Horrocks, Lenny Henry, Jon Culshaw, and more. The music is by Philip Pope.

This audio is presented on three 180g heavyweight neon green vinyl records secured in the hardcover 20-page book which features sleeve note by Geoff McGivern and Jem Roberts, (Adams’s official biographer).

There is an exclusive edition of this set (only available via Amazon UK) which includes a printed signed by Geoff McGivern (Ford Prefect). This is limited to 500 copies.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Hexagonal Phase is released on 13 March 2020.

I also received the Hitchhikers set though I ordered the Heaven 17. Unfortunately, living in Canada, returning it will not be easy, particularly now that Amazon UK is not shipping to N.A.
Its a pretty cool set (signed), so I guess I’ll keep it.
I’ll try and reorder the Heaven 17 hopefully at some point when this virus thing is over with, fingers crossed.
Stay healthy Paul and everyone out there in SDE land.

‘We have been made aware that some boxes of Heaven 17 were mixed up with Hitchhiker’s Guide boxes. We have spoken to Amazon who have now corrected their stock so you should be able to re-purchased the signed edition of Heaven 17 which is currently still in stock on Amazon UK.

You will need to raise a return request in order to send your box back for a refund/replacement. We would advise you speak to customer service directly who will be able to advise on return options if leaving the house is not possible for you at present.

We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and disappointment caused’

Was I disappointed or not? On opening the package I found to my disappointment I had received Heaven 17 another big idea – even though all the packaging was labelled correctly….

Looks like a problem at packaging…

Only hoping the replacement I received has the signed print with it.

Jan Verdegaal

Hi peter,

Do you want to swap? I ordered Heaven 17, but got the Hitchhikers Guide box. Perhaps we can exchange if Paul wants to send our mail adresses to each other?

Kind regards – Jan V

I received my order from amazon uk labeled Another big idea, and opened it to find this inside. Someone at the Amazon warehouse is not paying enough attention.

Me too

A couple of more Douglas related items shortly.

In March, the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Future” which must surely be too dated now to have much attraction?

More exciting in May is a set with both of the “original” Original LP sets – Hitchhikers and Restaurant – combined. First time on CD, I expect. Sufficiently different version from the BBC Radio recording to make it worth acquiring. I still have my LPs in pristine condition.

Dave Smith

How do I find this?

[…] copper ink. Anyone who has bought the recent Terry Pratchet Discworld set or perhaps one of the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy packages will know what to expect of […]

What with Demon doing the huge League of Gentlemen vinyl set Paul, do you think there might be a “complete” vinyl box set for this released anytime? Demon appeared to put out the individual LOG releases after the box set, so could this possibly happen (albeit in reverse) for Hitchhikers?

I thought the And Another Thing book was pretty terrible. Was it well received? I always thought it wasn’t but maybe I’m wrong

Stuart Ansell

It was generally well received without anyone being ecstatic about it I think. The radio series was excellent, though.

Frank Sidebottom

the prices of these “coloured tat” releases never cease to amaze !!!

ordered! and thanks for the heads-up, I was not expecting this at all.

amazingly it is as of right now the #2 best-seller in amazon’s vinyl category.

Danny Graydon

Ordered within twenty seconds of getting the SDE e-mail. I was very surprised as I honestly thought that it was abundantly clear that Demon was sticking strictly to the DA canon, but I’m glad they changed their mind (I can quite imagine that all of these have been hot sellers – unquestionably the very best presentation of HH’s that there has ever been…). Really, had THP been a part of the original release plan, Simon Jones would have likely been the signee for this one…

Thanks Paul. Ordered – having the other 5, all with the signed prints, it would be simply wrong not to.

@Stuart – you are correct in that the promotional material for the launch of the first of the series was clear that there were to be only five.

Stuart Ansell

I thought so! This was an unexpected surprise and A VERY welcome one.

Michael McA

I’m gonna get very excited the next time something is issued on black vinyl.

Stuart Ansell

Yes!!!!! These are such wonderful sets – I was listening to the secondary phase the other day and privately bemoaning that the available info seemed to say that the hexagonal phase set was unlikely (apparently there were some rights issues). So glad they’ve sorted it out – ordered instantly.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
