The Last Waltz / 40th Anniversary sets

The Band‘s 1976 Thanksgiving Day concert in Winterland Theatre, San Francisco – where they were joined by an all-star group of musicians including Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, and Neil Young –  was immortalised by director Martin Scorsese’s concert film The Last Waltz. Rhino will release FOUR special 40th anniversary editions in November, including a set that pairs the audio and video for the first time.

A 40th anniversary two-CD edition features remastered audio, while a five disc version which comprises 4CD+blu-ray, contains the full 54-track version (with rehearsals etc.) and the film on blu-ray. This looks to be presented smart ‘casebound book’ packaging (see image below). The blu-ray has the audio in 5.1.

There will also be a 6-LP vinyl set which contains the full four-CD audio. I should point out that the UK price-tag of £60 (at the time of writing) is great value for this massive vinyl set, and by far the cheapest.

But, wait for it…. there is also a lavish “40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition“, which is limited to 2,500 copies worldwide. This includes a replica of Scorsese’s original shooting script. Once the film was complete, Scorsese had two copies of the script bound in a red leather book; one copy for himself and the other a gift to Robbie Robertson, which now resides at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Although this edition is $260 you only get ‘faux’ leather for the 260-page book. With this version you get the four CDs, the blu-ray and a second blu-ray with a Martin Scorsese and Robbie Robertson interview, photo gallery and 5.1 mix of the original album. Not sure these will end up on Amazon and the like, but you can purchase here.

Collector’s Edition. Feel the quality of faux-leather.

These are all being issued on 11 November 2016 (the month from hell for the physical music fans’ wallet) except the collector’s edition which is due on 9 December.

Does anybody know what happened with this box set. I pre-ordered months ago and Amazon is now giving me an estimated date of December 11th. It looks like the vinyl box is available but the 4 cd/blu ray box is nowhere to be found.

What a great show!!! What a great SDE!!!
One minor note to whoever put this together: The 7th (Georgia) and 9th (King Harvest Live) songs from the concert are still missing. If it is not asking to much would you please go back to the pressing plant and put these on the set. This is the 6th time this has been released & I have them all but I need the 2 missing songs. Or you can append the set with a 45 in mono
Thank you

Hello everyone, could someone please tell me if the blu ray of the 40th anniversary edition is the same as before or did they do a new transfer. the older one had a so so video quality? Thank you.

PS Don’t forget Robbie Robertson’s biography and companion CD also come out November 15th (USA)…the book is very positively reviewed by Martin Scorsese…I really MUST see my doctor very soon!

I tried to see my doctor on Monday but he’s booked until Friday…apparently we are not the only ones who are very unwell this time of year…enjoy!

I was talking with friends about S.E. sets like this and we came to the conclusion that very few more can be justifiably released.

Since that conversation I have ordered;
The Band
King Crimson
Jethro Tull
Kate Bush
XTC….S.E. sets, not to mention regular releases by too many to mention. In that conversation we came to the conclusion that this record collecting is an illness.

I see my doctor on Monday.

The 2002 Box was remixed by Robertson. In an interview Robertson said he was focusing on mixing the film audio and left the album mix to others, and he was not satisfied with the result. The Rhino site says this set is “newly remastered audio from the original master tapes (at least as to the 2 CD version). Does this mean we lose the Robertson remix?

Luckily (for me) I have the 4CD set already and nothing I can play 5.1 on at the moment.
I have the Last Waltz DVD, so I might upgrade to a Blu Ray if it came out on its own and had the music and the movie (all remastered) on it, but otherwise I’ll wait. I have just struggled past the Kate Bush and Queen (2CD for me) pages so even the cheap version of November is building up.

Already pre-ordered the Collector’s Edition, since I never did get the earlier 4CD set. Now I just need a new coffee table to fit it on. :)

Any ideas as to what region the blu-rays will be in ?

damn you Paul Sinclair and your evil Site of Doom!!!!! already have umpteen versions of said concert including the robbie robertson signed one. cant resist it…..these releases should be …wait for it……Banned(Band) to stop me buying them. sorry that was very very poor.

That red book edition looks just the thing for killing the odd tarantula. King Hernia (Has Surely Come) to the unfortunate postie who has to deliver it. Otherwise, I’ll stick with the two CD version I’ve already got, thanks.

11th November this year, 2nd mortgage time.

Bowie Legacy, all copies as I am a completist

The vinyl of this, as I don’t have it “anywhere”

No. 1, daughters birthday, as I am a good dad

Scotland v England at Wembley, as I am a masochist!0

Good be a good day.

Paul Murphy

Not wishing to be a sourpuss, but they could have popped the movie in there as well. Maybe we can hope for an expanded movie release at some point [rehearsals were filmed, and there has long been a rumour that, despite his insistence otherwise, Dylan’s full set was filmed]. I’m now off online to see if I can find anybody who wants to buy a kidney so I can pay for all the stuff I’ve pre-ordered for this November.

It’s buried in the description a bit, but the movie is on the blu-ray.

Paul Murphy

Ahh silly me. In my defence I’ve already sold my corneas to pay for the Pink Floyd box set [hoping Amazon pack it in a REALLY big carton, as that’s where I’ll be living when the wife sees November’s bank statement].

Stevie B

Left or right?

Stevie B

Hold on, I can’t afford to a new kidney as I’ve got Kate Bush, Queen at the BBC, Beatles Eight Days A Week film, the Stones in Mono, Jack White, Wilco, Seasick Steve, Dylan 1966 (2 CD) and several Yoko Ono/John Lennon re-issues to buy.

Dylan’s entire set was filmed, but some of the film is only B&W

Neil Storey

Delicious…has to be the vinyl edition; one of the greatest concerts ever recorded. A must have.

Bassel Hassouna

Does anybody know if there is any difference between these 4cds tracklist and the 4 disc edition that was released several years ago?

It’s the same track listing as the 2002 4 CD box I own.

It’s a great collection of music.

i have the same set.
it’s superb !

Warm leatherette!
