Underworld / Second Toughest in the Infants / 4CD super deluxe

Underworld’s 1996 album Second Toughest in the Infants will be reissued as a four-disc super deluxe edition in November.

The Mercury Prize and Brit Award nominated album has been remastered (at Abbey Road) for the first time and a two-CD deluxe edition adds singles, B-sides and remixes via the bonus disc.

The four-CD super deluxe goes beyond that, with a selection of previously unreleased tracks on disc three, providing an insight into the creative process around the record. The fourth disc on the super-deluxe is devoted to the iconic Born Slippy (Nuxx) (used in Danny Boyle’s film Trainspotting) and features seven unreleased recordings of that track, from earliest embryonic studio version through to a final extended mix via several previously unheard live versions from 1994.

There will also be single CD and 2LP vinyl remasters, with both limited to the original eight-track album.

Second Toughest in the Infants is reissued on 20 November 2015.

Epic bump from the past…Recordstore is sell8ng this super deluxe version for 17quid shipped!

Have now received mine too, all praise to HMV. Great deal. Also includes a HD download code.

Looks like they will be announcing live dates to follow this release up, just as they did last year for Dubnobass.

Got mine today from Hmv, fair play for them for that price and delivering it on day of release!
Looks great so far without actually opening it, would have preferred the original cover but still looks good.

charlie D: no, and no

rowla has vocals!

confusion the waitress is just another version, not the darren emerson remix.

Charlie D.

Can someone confirm if the bonus cuts “Rowla A1806” and “confusion the waitress (she said)” are the ones from the WL promo
and the waitress acetate?

Yup, my HMV order has been despatched. Excellent news and saving!

Up to £57.99 at HMV. I haven’t had an order cancellation yet so fingers crossed.

Anyone had a shipping confirmation from hmv yet at the 27.99 price, it’s out in 4 days and been just saying payment processing for weeks.

HMV seem to be honouring £27.99 pre-orders. Just received my shipping confirmation from them at that price. Great deal.

I meant: “[…] That worked well in the previous 2-disc DE, DNBWMHM. Something the people behind the upcoming Simple Minds 2-disc DE, Once Upon A Time, could learn from…”

@ Paul Sinclair. The additional cost comment is on the Underworld website under product description: http://underworld.tmstor.es/cart/product.php?id=26215

The track listing selection for the 4-disc set is intelligent, as it will provide, I’m sure, a great listening experience:

1st disc: original album, intect.
2nd disc: a best of the B-sides and a best of the two singles mixes.
3rd disc: a varied selection of previously unreleased work in progress.
4th disc: a progression of arguably their most iconic track.

…and all this without mixes by other artists, only Underworld’s work, to further ensure consistency.

The 2-disc edition has an intelligent track listing too, as the 2nd disc acts as a best of the content found in the 3 extra discs of the 4-disc SDE. That worked well in the previous SDE, DNBWMHM. Something the people behind the upcoming Simple Minds SDE, Once Upon A Time, could learn from…

underworld are obviously not going for completeness, as they don’t even try to put all the mixes, edits, etc anymore.

this is about the theme of the album, and highlighting the progression of it.

i’ll wait awhile before getting it.

You can always buy the boxset from the underworld site with a t-shirt for £80 (£75 early bird special price). Ouch with a capital OUCH!

t-shirt fine if you are a dwarf they only go up to xl.

Jason Whittaker

“*Only* go up to XL”? Isn’t XL extra large already? *XS* would be for dwarves…

Plus, another heads up; the Bowie Five Years CD box is currently £72 on Wow HD. They’re a bit hit and miss but have improved their service recently. I got my shipping notification this morning! Things take up to two weeks to arrive but that’s nearly thirty pounds off RRP with free worldwide shipping.

Wow HD improved? Since they changed their website, my order history, including unfulfilled ones, as well as other account details, are completely gone. Ordered Chemical Brothers in late July, card charged same day, disc still not dispatched, and no replies to my numerous mails.
I’d be veeery wary of them …

Ordered at HMV too. Fingers crossed chaps :-)

The opening salvo to Toughest Infants (and the live Everything, Everything) has to be one the best starts to any album I’ve ever heard. Simply superb! I’ll definitely be purchasing the vinyl but might wait for the price of the 4CD package to drop considerably.

U.S. buyers can order from Amazon.co.uk, skip the VAT and get the SDE for £57, or around $87, significantly less than the $129 at Amazon.com.

The 4 disc version on HMV for £27.99. Will that be in the same presentation box as the £65.00 version? Will HMV honour the price if they’ve made a mistake? I’ve ordered it just in case.

This looks great to a fan who hasn’t explored their extra material. Will likely go for the 2CD as I don’t need it all, and Dubnobass was an excellent double disc set.

Apparently a Japanese super deluxe edition is set for release (on 2015-11-20), but without any additional material: “The contents of this release will be identical to the worldwide release, except for SHM-CD format, which is the exclusive feature for this Japanese edition.”
— source: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/UICY-77530

Thank you for your reply :)
Too bad there’s no extra disc…
At 14000YEN, the Japanese SDE is this time not really attractive.

No blu-ray audio scheduled for this one. I’m disappointed, but let’s hope for hi-res files for “Second Toughest…” at least ! No announcement regarding those.

@ Paul:
Uploading a picture of the set with the 12″x12″ book (as shown on Underworld’s web site) would explain why the 4xCD set is more expensive than double the price of the 2xCD set ;-)

I’ll listen to it on Spotify, and buy the physical release if I’m impressed.

I hope there’ll be a Japanese edition again, like with the previous DNBWMHM set.

All discs were SHM-CDs, and it came with a 6th disc of live recordings.

Being a huge Underworld fan I have to have this, but was disgusted with £65 and dismayed at £55, fancy paper or not. £27.99 however, is Deal Alert bait. Ordered sharpish.

Michael Pendlebury

You can buy the Super deluxe version for £75 from the Underworld website (www.underworld.tmstor.es). If you get it from there you get a T-shirt included plus I seem to remember reading you may get added artwork. It also gives the explanation that Piotr gave above for the higher price. Must admit I’m tempted but if you can get just the 4 CD deluxe version from HMV for £27.99, well, that’s a much better price isn’t it?

gary C

Dubnobass was excellent as a 2CD edition.
Not so sure about this one. Can live without CD4 of course, I never need to hear that song again.

alan hansen

@gary C = my thoughts, exactly.

“The increased retail price charged here as compared to dubnobasswithmyheadman is a result of additional paper and packaging costs incurred by our label partner, Universal Music in achieving our design spec.”

The 4-disc SDE version is on HMV Shop for £27.99

The pre order link for the italian 4CD super deluxe edition is wrong, links the amazon france website

No Blu-ray audio this time I see.

As the last one had half as many tracks as the double CD for twice the price, I’m not surprised.

Ola Torstensson

No audio blu-ray for this one?

£65 is royally taking the piss. £50 over the price of the 2discer! Madness.

Rob Puricelli

£65 for 4x CD’s?? Blimey!

Amazon’s stupid pricing again.
