Whitesnake / Unzipped: new ‘unplugged’ & acoustic six-disc box set

Rhino will issue Unzipped, a new Whitesnake super deluxe edition box set, later this year, that focuses on ‘unplugged’ and acoustic-based performances recorded over the last 20 years or so. This 5CD+DVD package includes rare and unreleased studio and live recordings, acoustic demos, concert videos, interviews and more.

The first CD in the set is called Unzipped… In The Studio: The Love Songs and features six previously unreleased tracks, while disc two, Starkers in Tokyo is a 1997 unplugged concert recorded in Tokyo. This has never been officially issued in the States and has been newly remixed for this set. Two further CDs, Starkers in Europe and More Starkers continue the theme, delivering 48 more audio tracks.

The final audio disc is Up Close & Personal which contains 25 of David Coverdale’s unreleased and acoustic demos.

A DVD completes the six-disc super deluxe edition with live, unplugged performances filmed around the world between 1997 and 2015, including a complete acoustic show recorded at the Cutting Room in New York in 2008.

Two-CD, 2LP (discs one and two of this set) and single CD (disc one) editions of Unzipped are also available, although the six-disc extravaganza is reasonably priced, so I suspect anyone interested will be going the whole hog!

This Whitesnake Unzipped box set will be issued on 19 October 2018

Just letting you know Amazon au ,have pre order on box set at a good price

Paul Wainwright

Whats going on we can not even pre order it in Australia

Am concerned about the amount of material after 2000 that’s been included, since Coverdale’s voice is 90% shot. The Whitesnake live show I attended about seven years ago was pitiful: he couldn’t hit the high notes and grumbled his way through everything else like a man really struggling. When he left the stage so the drummer could play a solo, there was an audible sigh of relief from the people behind me. I kid you not, he was really embarrassing. (The Made In Britain live album – or whatever it was called – from the Forevermore tour includes very few genuinely live vocals as a result).

All of that said, I might still buy this if the price comes down a bit, as I really love ‘Starkers In Tokyo’ and have never seen the DVD footage.

Big fan of Starkers in Tokyo. Nicely done set. Must have for me. Wife leaving room and shaking head.

DC always has the fans in mind when coming up with stuff, he knows instinctively what we want like last years terrific 1987 box set. Can’t help but thinking that maybe due to the new album being delayed until next year this is a bit of a stop gap.
Hope the price comes down a bit for the Super Deluxe though.

Oh yes, can’t wait for this. “Old Cov” has still got a great voice (when he’s not screaming his bollocks off). 2000’s Into The Light solo album is a hidden treasure . Shame he hasn’t done anymore albums in a similar vein.
For those you love Starkers in Tokyo – the DVD has been remixed in 5.1 & stereo (according to DC’s website)
I’m all over this. No I’m not – no pre-order on Amazon AU!!!!!

Sadly not [yet] available on Amazon AU.

Check again they have it

I’m a big Whitesnake fan. I have the Box ‘O’ Snakes with the book, and several titles on vinyl, and of course all of Mr. Coverdale’s Purple output as well. But for me, it’s their raunchy rocking sound, either the old line up with the twin-guitar attack, the late great Jon Lord on keys and Paice on drums, or the brilliant 1987 album, or even the Vai album. Acoustic….mèh…not so much hard rockin’ there. I like David’s voice a lot, but this seems too much of a good thing for me personally. I’ll listen to it once, and then never again I’m afraid, reaching for the Ready An’ Willing album.
Of course, it’s nice they put stuff out, and do it right. But I’m afraid I’ll skip this. Very nice for the Starkers fans though.

I’m concerned the packaging might be cheap or not very good. There should be a large hardcover book for this included. I’m afraid it will be or close to digi-packaging quality. Especially since there is no mentioning of it. Sucks that it won’t be released in vinyl box set. Bowie also released abridged versions of his compilations on vinyl. Sad.

Very comprehensive and very well priced. I’m not a Whitesnake fan so although tempting, I’m not buying. Beautiful cover as well, very well done. Labels, pls take note!

That’s quite a good price indeed.

I can see that once more, Amazon FR is missing. This website has quit selling music.

Hell, France has quit listening to music, so why bother…. :/

Paul Wren

Good pricing and an interesting listen so I’ve just ordered the double vinyl LP. Thanks for the early heads up, Paul.

Neil Kelly

That’s a whole lot of Whitesnake right there. 10/10 for effort although i’m no expert. Price points can’t be final though surely? UK / USA 1 disc set similar but UK / USA 2 disc set double in price here in the UK. Crazy!

Very comprehensive set, paerahps almost a little too comprehensive. I am a fan of the “Starkers” album though, so may be tempted.
