Grobschnitt / 79:10 / limited box set
West German rock band Grobschnitt will see a very limited 17CD super deluxe box set of all 14 of their albums released later this month that comes with almost seven hours of bonus material.
The box set is titled 79:10 and covers the entire output of the band from 1972 to 1989. Everything has been newly remastered and in total there is over 22 hours of material for fans to enjoy. The reason for ’79:10′ is that each of the 17 CDs has 79 minutes and 10 secs of audio, so they are packed with content!
This box set has been put together with the help band founders Lupo (Gerd Otto Kühn) and Eroc (Joachim Ehrig) who have dug into the archive for pictures, press releases, lyrics and personal stories to create new booklets for each album in this collection – much of it unseen. The CDs are all ‘mintpack’ digipacks.
In addition to the CD booklets, there is also a large format (12″x12″) 92-page booklet (with German and English text) with more rare photos and new liner notes.
These box sets are rather special because each set comes with a SIGNED ART PRINT of the image that adorned the inside of the gatefold 1977 album Rockpommel’s Land. The three founding members, Lupo, Eroc and Willi Wildschwein, have hand-signed each single art print individually. The print is approximately 13″ x 26″ in size.
At the time of writing there is no detailed track listing, but we will bring you this when it’s available. There is also no indication of what the production run is for this box but for what it’s worth it is described as ‘strictly limited’. This is probably accurate given the hand-signed print etc. At a guess perhaps 1000 to 2000 units.
The 79:10 super deluxe box set is released on 27 March 2015 and you can order from JPC.de or Amazon Germany. The albums will also be made available separately around the same time.

How nice to drop back in here and discover that Eroc, no less, read the comments I made back in March. :)
Thank you soooooooooooooo much for this. I’ve ordered it and many thanks to Lupo and my hero, Eroc for putting all of this together in glorious remastered sound (which I expect from Eroc – considering the wonderful job he did on his solo discs and many of the other band recordings he’s remastered). Man, this is heavenly news!
For those who still have the 1998 remasters, keep them because there are some bonus track not featured in this box set.
For the remasters that I have in my collection this means the following extra bonus tracks:
Grobschnitt 1998
Die Sinfonie (Live at Volkspark, Hagen, Germany, September 1971) – 29:41 min
Jumbo 1998
Auf Wiedersehen [Reprise] – 1:17 min
Rockpommels Land 1998
Tontillon – 6:15 min
Merry-Go-Round 1998
Du Schaffst Das Nicht (Live) – 9:52 min
Merry-Go-Round (Live) – 4:35 min

Eroc,
Any chance of new vinyl reissues from the analog tapes?
I preordered the box the second I saw the announcement. I had my little prog band for a while (Lands End, we went nowhere!), the minute I heard Grobschnitt I realized someone captured everything I ever wanted to do in music, and so much better than I ever could. Can’t wait. Now, if only there was an affordable box of all the Silver Mint Series releases! I’d love to have those but way out of my price range. Any chance on getting a tracklisting?
Hey Mark,
I have 3 Land’s End CD’s. “Pacific Coast Highway”, “Terra Serranum” and “Natural Selection”. I like each one. Cheers!
Thanks for the kind word. Glad you like them. They’ve all become pretty rare. I think I only have maybe 3 copies of Terra Serranum, about 5 of PCH and one copy of The Lower Depths left. An Older Land, Drainage and Natural Selection long since sold out. I’ve been toying with the idea of a re-release but doubt there’s much interest really. We do have another album nearly finished, unfortunately recording things spread across the globe and on computers has caused some serious accidents (25 minute piece of music destroyed in a computer error, happy times!) We’re always trying to figure out how to do new stuff, fun times!
I LOVED “Natural Selection” Mark. One of my favourite modern prog releases of all time. Played it countless times on my radio show. As for Grobschnitt, easily one of the greatest rock bands of all time. Unbelievable musicians. And Eroc’s live recordings sound BETTER than virtually all studio recordings I’ve heard.
Hey Mark
Were in touch via Malcolm Parker some years ago when I was trying to find Terra Serranum. You name-checked me on Lower Depths (unless you know someone els with the same name). I’ve got all the albums incl the very excellent Drainage. Be really interested to know if you and Fred are likely to release anything new. Sam Spencer UK
I am definitely interested in getting the box. Will there be a good way of getting this in the US?
Very nice to read all these comments. I’d like to mention two more important things: the linernotes are bilangual in German and English and the official release date is May 8th, which is also the start of our complete website. Oh yes – one more: we ourselves can’t await to hold the box in our hands…
Cheers!
Thanks Eroc!
Thanks Paul for the info, I’ve just pre ordered the box from amazon.de !
Have to completely disagree with Mig that there was a downward spiral after the first two and especially that nothing after 1978 is worth hearing. The band moved away from the self-confining spacerock theme and brilliant albums like Jumbo and Rockpommel’s Land followed. 1979’s Merry-Go-Round is a very solid album with classics like Du schaffst das nicht, A.C.Y.M. and the title track being welcome additions to the catalog. 1981’s Illegal has long been considered one of their finer albums with wonderful tracks like The Sniffer, Mary Green, the title track and the beautiful Raintime it’s easy to see why. I’m not overly familiar with Razzia other than the wonderful title track and haven’t heard Kinder + Narren or Fantasten, nor have I heard any good things about them. The later live releases don’t match the brilliance of Solar Music but Volle Molle does have a nice Rockpommel’s Land and A.C.Y.M., it’s just a shame I don’t speak German or I’m sure I’d appreciate it much more. Sonnentanz was the, then current, reworking of Solar Music and made for a wonderful live release. It did not evolve into a theatrical piece with lots of spoken word by any means. Last Party is a decent mixture of the best of Illegal with some other bits, I’d wager the double CD expanded version in the box will be much better.
I’d certainly agree with “Rockpommels Land” as a classic, though some might think it a bit wimpy. It’s a sort of fantasy symphonic prog album, like Yes singing about fairies. No, I’m joking…but not much.
Much more interesting is the band’s magnum opus, their “Dark Star” if you like, called “Solar Music”, which is a kind of Gong/Steve Hillage space rock workout. One version of this (as “Sun Trip”) took up the second side of their first album, and another version took up the whole of the second disk of their second album “Ballermann”. Various live versions of “Solar Music” have come out since, including the 1978 “Solar Music Live” and five (!) retrospective live CDs of 1970s performances of the piece called “The History Of Solar Music” — sadly, I see nowhere in the listing above where these could be shoe-horned in as bonus tracks.
Unfortunately, too, “Solar Music” quickly evolved into a theatrical piece with a lot of spoken word comedy (in German), so even here I can’t fully recommend it. In my opinion the first two albums are essential. The rest is the normal 1970s prog downward spiral and nothing after 1978 is worth hearing.
A great band and great box – which the book was hardback and shame no dvd of footage like the awesome Pretty Things box which arrived yesterday :)
This box will sit nicely next to my Magma Studio Zend box set!
Fat Old Bloke, I have followed Grobschnitt from the start. One of my all time fave Krautrock bands. It’s hard to come up with a ‘go to’ album as they can be quite different and there are so many strong albums IMHO.
Their debut is incredible (and would be wonderful in 5.1). At the time, I think many considered Jumbo to be their peak and I seem to recall some muso critics cited it as having a Genesis (late Gabriel era) influence, though still very different. Solar Music Live is also mind blowing, and different again. Rockpommel’s Land is also highly regarded. (Also love the Eroc solo albums, but that’s another story.)
Sadly, this box set will almost certainly be way outside of my $ reach here in Oz. :(
I have never heard of this band, what’s their go-to album?
Go-to: Solar Music Live. Definitely.
Hey,
It’s a German so called “Krautrock” band from the 70’s and 80’s.
It’s alternative rock with German as well as English lyrics. Keep in mind the band members are German and sometimes the English goes a little amiss.
I would start out with “Rockpommel’s Land”.
If you like spacy and melodic to wanky guitar music, smoke a joint and listen to “Solar Music”
Both albums are a good introduction to the band.
