Tony Banks / A Chord Too Far box
Esoteric Recordings are to release a four-CD box set featuring the solo work of Genesis founding member Tony Banks.
A Chord Too Far contains music drawn from his seven solo albums and two orchestral works with many tracks remixed exclusively for this collection.
In addition, the box contains four previously unreleased tracks – three keyboard demos of orchestral suites and a piece originally written for his 1991 album Still.

*sigh* The cynicism here really discourages me. Tony’s music may get a little publicity from these releases, which surely would be a nice thing, wouldn’t it?
Are these re-mastered tracks?
Some of the tracks (I don’t have a complete list at the moment) have actually been remixed — as in, they went back to the original multi-track recordings and made new mixes. For example, you can finally hear what’s going on in Lion of Symmetry now. It’s like that layer of sonic muck has been scraped away at long last.
I’ve seen plenty of comments on why need a 4 disc set. Probably true, but for anyone who has none of his material, it’s a decent starting point. Although at $75US/$88CDN a bit to high in price.

When “A Curious Feeling” was re-released back in 2009 the album was remixed by Nick Davis and sounded as bad as the 2007-09 Genesis remixes. I hope the same method hasn’t been used on these reissues.
Luckily i have all his solo albums on Vinyl and CD in their original form so i don’t think I will bother on his reissued releases.
This is stretching a bit. Tony Banks is a great musician, but unlike other Genesis alumni, including Anthony Philips who is very underappreciated, Banks solo career never amounted to much, artistically or commercially. It seems that when there’s money to be made on anything Genesis related, the boys never miss an opportunity. Lots of people will buy this (probably, including me), and then, alas, it will rarely be listened to.
Artistically? That is an opinion I do not share.
Good for you mate
Yes, the cover is from “Le piano sauvage”, volume two in the wonderful series of books “Philémon”, by Fred.
If I’m not mistaken, that’s the second Genesis-related release that features a french “cartoonist” : Duke had a drawing by Lionel Koechlin.
The Philémon series by Fred is really worth checking out. It is as unique and dreamy as Little Nemo, Alice in wonderland, with also a Tim Burton-like sense of humor or irony.
I don’t know if it has been translated in English, though.
Around the time of the A Curious Feeling (ACR) re-release, Tony hinted at the possibility of a CD + DVD 5.1 Best Of, made up from tracks from ACR and the other albums. Sadly, it appears that the upshot of the release of this (rather overblown) boxset is that that Best Of may not now see fruition…
If however the other solo albums are all to get re-releases, I wonder if they will see any 5.1 mixes? The ACR package was a corker…
I have been waiting for Tony’s solo work to get reissued, as here in the UK none of his solo CDs are easily/cheaply found (The Fugitive costs a small fortune, and the others are around the £10 mark), and there hasn’t been any genuine anthology before now. My hearts sinks slightly at the “remixed exclusively for this compilation”; I hope that doesn’t mean yet more revisionism by an artist!
Might wait for the individual albums…..
I agree that 4 previously unreleased tracks on a 4-CD set is not enough to get me to buy it. I’ve got all of Tony Banks’ non-classical CD’s already. Hopefully, the individual album reissues will offer enough bonus material to be worth buying.
This is a totally useless release.
It’s a random pick of tracks from his solo albums, which can still all be found for 0.02$ each on the used bins.
I would have understood a 1CD selection to rise some interest around the forthcoming reissue campaign, but a 4cd box seems waaaay too much for his solo output.
Clearly there’s the inevitable bonus track (only one diluted among 4 discs?) and 3 demos (who needs those?) to attract the completists, but i hope people won’t get fooled by those few ‘rarities’ and will leave the box where it deserves to remain: on the shop shelf or in the amazon warehouse.
Great cover by late french strip artist Fred.
@chdx: A cover by Fred? Wow, that’s why it looked familiar, thank you for pointing that out!! Must be from “Le Piano Sauvage”!!
This is the start of a full campaign for Tony’s solo catalogue. All his albums will be reissued by Esoteric over the next 12 months. As for ‘Calling All Stations’, I thought it was solid enough. Flawed, yes, but arguably a better album than ‘We Can’t Dance’.
Agreed, I liked it a lot better than ‘We Can’t Dance’. The last two tracks were very strong, as was the b-side, ‘Run Out of Time’. As to this, what a perfect title :) Can’t wait to hear ‘Poppet’. I did hope ‘Arpegg’ would be on this, but hopefully that will come out sometime.
A chord too far? That was ‘Calling All Stations’ wasn’t it?
Zzzzzzzzinggggg!!!
I love Tony’s solo work. It has never received the credit it deserves. I own all of his solo albums and I am looking forward to purchasing this one as well.
