Nirvana compilation comes to blu-ray audio and 2LP 45RPM vinyl

nirvana_45

Nirvana‘s 2002 self-titled compilation is being reissued on vinyl and blu-ray audio next month.

The 14-track collection is a solid overview and features the last studio recording, You Know You’re Right, all the well known singles and two tracks from the MTV Unplugged performance, including David Bowie’s The Man Who Sold The World.

nirvana_stickThis isn’t being re-released on CD but there will be two vinyl versions a standard 180g LP and a special deluxe 2LP set cut at 45RPM. Additionally, Nirvana will be issued on hi-res (96kHz/24bit) via a ‘Pure Audio’ blu-ray audio release. The blu-ray is stereo only affair (PCM, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD) with no surround sound option.

The single vinyl LP comes with a download card for ‘MP3s’ (actually 320 KBPS MP4 AAC) but one advantage of opting for the 2LP 45RPM is that you get an upgraded download of  hi-res 96/24 files, although as the sicker notes (see above) the two tracks from Unplugged are CD-quality 44.1kHz/16 bit. It’s not clear at this point whether the blu-ray will offer the hi-res download or not, but it seems reasonably likely, particularly after the recent Grace Jones experiment.

Nirvana will be released on 28 August 2015.

Paul,
Sorry to bother you, but would you know if the 2×45 RPM version came in a 200gm version and a 180gm version? The reason I ask, is because Amazon Canada has it listed as “Nirvana [2LP 200g 45RPM Vinyl + Digital Copy]” but from the sticker on the image of the cover, it states that it is “180g audiophile Vinyl 45RPM”

[…] be issued as a double-disc 45RPM pressing, similar to how the Nirvana compilation was released in August 2015. That was also put out on blu-ray audio (and standard 33RPM single LP) but there is no […]

Actually, the 2x45RPM vinyl version has a good price (29,99€+S&H) on store.universalmusic.com/udiscover/ and another 10% off is available with this discount code: UDAUGUST10

it’s worth reminding here that the version of “All Apologies” on this compilation is from MTV’s Unplugged series, and not the album/studio version.

I sort of remember this being a fairly unimpressive release and one that Grohl and Noveselic were not happy with as they were pushing for a comprehensive box set that I think would have been the better way to go. Courtney Love wanted easy money and the actual surviving band members didn’t see themselves as a singles band, the emphasis was on the album as the definitive statement of their music. Anyone truly excited about this? Box set sounded better to me.

I’m not sure where the best place would be to request it but for all the various releases there are (for this particular title, and all other titles ever posted at this Web site) could it be possible to put the UPC codes for each version that exists next to each particular version? It’s a lot easier to find items by UPC code when shopping on-line as it is the most exact way to search for something.

Worse still when it’s material you already have in your collection yet you have to pay for it again to get an uncompressed version.
I know they say record companies are struggling but come on give the fans a break!

Robert van Diggele

And we do not know if it will be an uncompressed mastering. 24/96 is not a guarantee for uncompressed mastering. It can easily be a brickwalled version on a blu ray.

Andrea

A Blu Ray disc, at 27,00 euros, with 14 tracks on it? A BR could easily fit Nirvana’s whole catalogue… the record market is getting insane… I like the “sicker notes” bit, seems rather appropriate :-)

Found a site selling the 2xLP for £20. Great price!!

@Darren

That would be £19.99 plus £4.80 postage, so £24.79 total
