Joni Mitchell / The Studio Albums 1968-1979 / 10CD box set
Rhino will release a Joni Mitchell box set on 29 October 2012.
The Studio Albums 1968-1979 gathers together Joni’s ten albums from that period, including all the classics such as 1971’s Blue and the acclaimed The Hissing Of Summer Lawns from 1975.
Expect the albums to be housed in simple card sleeves and held in a lift-off lid box. The design of the packaging is likely to be very similar to the Madonna Complete Studio Albums box that came from the same label a few months back (that box held 11 discs). Indeed, the graphic design for the top of this Joni box with the ‘grid’ of album covers is not dissimilar to Madonna’s box.

I imagine that unfortunately they haven’t replicated the printed inner sleeves that house the discs themselves, as they are on the original vinyl releases. JM clearly had a lot of input into creating her sleeves from pretty early on – Hejira and Don Juan certainly have them on the vinyl I have.
Hi Paul,
Are the cardboard sleeves the same as the Japanese mini LP that were issued last year ( Did RHINO ask warner japan to manufacture the sleeves ) Does “Ladies Of The Canyon” have a sticker on the cover ?
It would be great if you could post photos of each mini LP.
Thanks
Just heard some new information on this box set.
from JoniMitchell.com:
“We’ve received a copy of the new boxed set from Rhino (featuring all studio albums through Mingus) and are pleasantly surprised at the quality. Each CD is an exact replica of the original gatefold LP as released, a nice touch. It’s a little tough to read some of the lyrics, downsized as they are into CD packaging, but still, a nice set. The package is to be released on NOVEMBER 6, a day before Joni’s birthday.”
So with that news, I feel more inclined to pick this one up.
Yes I’ve had one of these boxes for about a week and they are very nicely done. All gatefolds and Mingus has the lyric insert with Joni’s painting. Will try to post some photos soon.
Yes, its nearly Christmastime again and the pound/euro/dollar signs are lighting up in the record companies eyes!
I am very conflicted about this release. On one hand, I love Joni and don’t have all of her music on CD. But this looks a bit shoddy, a little budget-box-y. As such, I also don’t believe the packaging will be faithful to the original LPs. Also, I doubt Joni gave this a resounding yes. But if the price is right, I’ll buy it.
I wouldn’t have expected any remastering given their recent track-record, or anything more than basic discs in card sleeves. Did hope that the packaging might be more along the lines of the similar Leonard Cohen albums box, but that was Columbia/Legacy not Warners/Rhino. The Madonna-esque design doesn’t really look right for Joni.
If this box is similar to the MNDN-box, then there is no remastering of these albums …??
