Enjoy a touch of Nazi Rock, Lemon Incest and more with the 30th anniversary Serge Gainsbourg Live At Casino De Paris limited edition 2CD+DVD or 3LP vinyl sets.

Serge and his seven-piece band rocked up for this gig in autumn 1985 wearing matching uniforms of blue shirts, blue jeans and white shoes. Fuelled by a ready supply of Gitanes cigarettes, the 57-year-old showed that years of hard living hadn’t dimmed his charisma during a funky 75-minute set, featuring performances of classics such as Initials B.B., Harley David (Son Of A Bitch), Bonnie and Clyde and Lemon Incest.



An album of the concert was originally released in 1986 – his second live album – entitled simply Gainsbourg Live. The two new physical editions of this reissue by Universal Music includes several exclusive versions of tracks such as Docteur Jekyll et Monsieur Hyde, La Nostalgie Camarade and Kiss Me Hardy – see track listing below highlighting all of the exclusives.

The three-LP set is pressed on heavyweight vinyl while two-CD plus DVD set comes complete with a glossy 24-page book.

  1. hi chdx, yes the cds seem now to be inserted in carboard slips rather than on trays; and the cd labels themselves seem to have each a different colour picture.
    But other than that, the concept seems to be exactly the same and from what I can tell it’s still missing the original artwork/sleeves.

Basically they were all complaining about four things: the discs don’t have the original sleeves/artwork but are all collected inside some sort of binder; some of the tracks advertised as “unissued” are actually either not *really* unissued, or instrumentals of little interest; some of the tracks previously released on the 17CD “Gainsbourg Forever” box from 2008 are missing here; the exorbitant price at the time.

    Its seems that the first three complaints may apply to the 2015 release as well, which seems to be just a reprint of the 2011 edition. But €75 for 20 discs is indeed a friendly price.

      It seems by looking at the pictures of the 2011 & 2015 releases that the new one has the CDs stored IN the pages of the big cardboard book (like Universal did for the Léo Ferré and Claude Nougaro’s “integrales”).

  5. 20 cd were coming with no cover for the different LP’s. There were no live, no lyrics printed. Cd’s were difficult to handle and fragile. No unreleased material available and a lot of tracks were missing.
    But now, 75€ for 20 cd’s, this is a deal.

    1. Mostly complains about the cheap packaging (no booklets, no individual packaging for each CD) and high price.

      Also, despite the name, fans complain that it’s not really a “complete recordings” and that several hard to find titles were omitted. Some also say that the audio quality of the unreleased material is sub-par.

      I’m French AND I bought this fabulous box set on release day.

      The biggest grudge against it is that a lot more unreleased tracks where announced but were finally held back. People are saying that on 284 announced tracks (and IIRC were written on the cardboard wrapping the box set), only 270 made the set including some duets with French singer Philippe Clay.

      People in the comments are also frustated that you can’t find lyrics of the songs – Gainsbourg was not only a great melodist, he was also very good with words, and you can read the lyrics of his songs like poems (try for instance “anthracite” or “l’alcool”). It is your standard c0ffee table book with discs held in carboard pages, which means no covers (only tiny replicated copies on the cardboard), and Gainsbourg was also famous for the album art. Last but not least, the live albums are not here, nor the “Anna” soundtrack. The fact that a few months later, deluxe editions of some of the albums were released with unissued tracks (some that were announced for the set!) was not well received but, hey, that’s the game of reissues…

      To me, the box set was what I was waiting for, a well presented complete studio recordings with – to my ear – great remastering. I would buy it again.

    3. The bad reviews are mostly:
      about the packaging (no individual cases for the CDs, as you can see on the pictures),
      the fact that some tracks are still missing (mostly obscure duets),
      that the bonus tracks are mostly instrumentals or “not that interesting”,
      that there was at one point talks about 284 tracks and that this box “just” has 270,
      that a new box shows up every 5 or 10 years with something new to make sure everybody’s buying it again…

    4. gogandmagog> they mainly complain that it’s incomplete (i.e: missing some obscure songs) and too expensive.

      I got that boxset and honestly at that price it’s a bargain, go for it !
