Pin-ups: Sony to entice fans with music & photo deluxe packages

Sony Music & Photos series / Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan is one of four legendary artists to get the ‘Music & Photos’ treatment

On 4 Februrary Sony are launching a new music release series with the moniker Music & Photos.

In a clear attempt to entice music lovers to purchase physical product by offering that little something extra, these Music & Photo releases will combine two-CD hits packages with ten quality photo prints, all contained in an oversized hardcover book. We are not talking about postcard-sized prints either. These are large photos, almost the size of a vinyl sleeve (actual dimensions large – 11″ x 12.5″). The book will be similar dimensions to a vinyl sleeve to accomodate the photos, although slightly taller.

The music giant is taking no risks with the artists chosen to get this treatment first – they are bringing out the big guns with Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Miles Davis and Jeff Buckley the first four out of the blocks.

Four artists feature in the inaugural wave of Music & Photos releases

Sony have impressed in recent months with the care that has gone into their packaging (e.g. Elvis – Prince From Another Planet, Rage Against The Machine XX) and they will be hoping these hardcover books, combined with a greatest hits audio and large highly frame-able photos will be a winning combination (unlike the others, the Jeff Buckley issue is CD+DVD rather than two-CD).

All four are available to pre-order at under £20, with the Elvis set available for £16.99. Note: The amazon links below are all correct and have been checked (ignore references to ‘French version’ – this is an error).

  1. Could I be less interested? These book releases have been done before by niche labels (check out the excellent work by Dust to Digital). But do I have a hankering for big glossy photo’s of Dylan? And to get them I need yet another greatest hits package?!? Odd. I have no desire at all.

Some of these catalogs have been exhausted, imo. For Dylan we’ve had SACD, Stereo remastered, Vinyl, and of course glorious Mono. Enough already.

Maybe if they put together some proper Special Editions, with decent booklets with lots to read about the album, and extra tracks from the era included – then I’d be interested.

    But this….. what for?

  2. Coming next week a limited edition David Bowie Greatest Hits compilation CD featuring an exclusive hand-written list of people Bowie may have slept with in the seventies compiled and signed by someone who may or may not have known him.

    1. Interesting reaction to these. Most people seem to be complaining more about churning out another greatest hits than the actual format. Having an oversized packaging with photos isn’t a bad idea for me – takes away most of the ‘negatives’ associated with CDs…

  3. Great! Now I can buy those Buckley tracks again. For the sixth time.

The only reason I would buy “Grace” again is if a SACD Surround version finally materialised.

  4. A nice (small) touch, using the old Columbia or RCA logo on the front. I would consider buying the Miles set, as it looks like a reasonable compilation.
