  1. So many negative comments about this box set, be grateful that Laura Nyro is rightfully getting some attention, some folk are never happy. It is a fantastic box set and the sound quality is top drawer. Analogue or digitally sourced I don’t know? But I don’t really care it sounds fantastic, AAA snobs need have a day off, digital sourced done well can be fantastic also. Anyways its about the music first and foremost. Arguably box set of the year.

  2. This is an awkward release, for various reasons.
And the main is: the first 4 albums, which arguably contain her best work, have all been spectacularly reissued on vinyl just recently, with the excellent mono reissue from Real Gone of the first album, and the next three with audiophile, all analogue editions from Pure Pleasure / Analog Spark.

This box, I really don’t think it’s all analogue. And I doubt that quality-wise it’s going to match those audiophile reissues, which probably the Nyro fan who also happens to be a vinyl lover already owns.
    Like I do.
And as much as I’d like to have the bonus disc, I’m not interested in buying all over again albums I recently purchased in audiophile quality…

  3. The first five albums (before Laura’s “retirement”) are all more or less essential, including the “Gonna Take A Miracle” covers set, which has all the joy you’d expect from best friends (LN and Patti Labelle) singing their favourite songs together, and I have a real soft spot for it… yes, a CD version of this box would be nice, and as someone else has mentioned, not making it a complete collection feels like a missed opportunity somewhat, but anything that gets Laura’s name out there again is worthwhile, she’s such an almost-forgotten talent, which is especially strange bearing in mind how in-demand her songs were for a few years…

    1. Well, there could be buyers interested in paying that +200 GBP if the content justifies that price tag which could mean a better book with more content, the addition of the final two studio albums, more live content and dvd / blu ray with available visual material. If there is not enough content then maybe there is a first time for them to produce a slightly cheaper set and explore if there is market for it…

  4. On the one hand a wonderful idea to appreciate the works of Laura Nyro with a high class box set, on the other hand a spoilt chance. Why leave out Nyro’s final two studio albums ‘Mother’s Spiritual’ and the excellent Gary Katz-produced ‘Walk The Dog & Light The Light’, the latter never having been available on vinyl at all? And then .. why not add the 16-song version of ‘Season of Lights’ (previous vinyl versions only had 10 songs), to make it a complete Columbia-era set?

A box set that contains 7 out of 9 studio albums of an artist and omits the other two that were originally on the same label .. it just doesn’t make sense to me, especially since Laura Nyro box sets don’t come around every other week ..

And yes, like the Pylon box set, this deserves a CD edition, too!

  5. I’m sure this will be lovely, but that’s a ludicrous price considering I got the first six LPs for a grand total of £8, or 5% of the retail price (and in great shape), all in the last five years.

  6. The “Rarities” are all previously released — either bonus tracks from various CD reissues or out-of-context excerpts from the two live albums released by Columbia. Those two live albums would have been welcome in this box, with “Season of Light” as the 2 LPs it was intended to be, rather than the single LP it was edited to fit when first released.

  7. Laura started with an absolute classic album but never quite kept that quality up. Some of her later material was rather mundane. But Pablo is spot on, this set needs a cd release

  8. Laura Nyro is definitely one of my favourite artists, a superb talent. I am not going to criticize that this is a only vinyl reissue (surely there are many happy with the announcement as it is) but wanted to express my opinion that I would welcome a CD edition of the same remastered material. If more buyers are feeling the same and express their opinion maybe we will have someone from Madfish listening…

    1. I agree that a CD set would be welcome. I’ve known about Laura Nyro for years but never got round to buying any of her albums. If this came as a reasonably priced CD set then I would be tempted to dive in. I just bought the Bill Withers CD box set for less than £30 having thought about getting some of his stuff for a long time but not really knowing where to begin. Getting all of the albums in one go means I’m not missing out on anything.
