SDE’s 2021 Record Store Day video preview #2
Record Store Day returns on Saturday 12 June, which is one of two ‘drop days’ this year (down from three in 2020). The second date is 17 July.
Keeping with tradition, SDE is pleased to present a series of video previews this week of selected items. Today we focus on albums, singles or EPs issued in the 1980s.
Remember, the rules are relaxed again this year, so if you can’t make it to your local record shop (if you have one!) then online orders are permitted from 6pm on the day. Good luck and let’s hear what your most desired items are – leave a comment!

Nitpick: I’m pretty sure “The Working Hour” and “Shout” were also newly mixed for the SFTBC box set, not just “Mothers Talk”.
Also, I’m still confused by the name of the guitarist. Trying to find out whether he’s called Sanders or Saunders is quite a problem!
Only Mothers Talk was remixed for the box set. Those other two songs must have been sourced from somewhere else, but they definitely weren’t remixed.
Thanks for the clarification Paul.
FYI, I was going by your very own liner notes.
I just wanted ultravox and noticed in several online shops that the CD was sold out already at 6pm, but the vinyl still available (e.g. banquet). I managed to get the CD at sister ray which was also sold out a bit later but still had some vinyl left. Seems CDs are more popular than expected?
In the UK, there was also a Dance To Tipperary compilation on CD and an Asian Dub Fountation combined LP + CD set in Drop 1 – with CD sets from John Prine and Sun Dragon scheduled for Drop 2.
From the UK RSD list, there are 6 CD releases in total (4 in Drop 1, 2 in Drop 2) compared to over 500 vinyl (and one cassette set). The latest US list has 10 releases on CD (and 2 on cassette) and about 400 vinyl.
Got the Ultravox CD from Badlands, £14 including postage. My first RSD purchase ever!!!
Was shocked that I secured the Ultravox CD after waiting in Rough Trade’s online queue for 35 mins with over 6,000 ahead of me. While they knocked off the VAT the postage to the US was £13.69. While it won’t be out here until RSD 2 July 17th, this was a case of bird in the hand…..
Managed to get the Ultravox Cd and Lp online for £10 and £25… which is nice. I was considering the Howard Jones 12″ album as well but that sold out straight away. I thought that £30 was expensive for a six track Lp anyway. Fortunately my original copy of that still sounds superb. Might look at the Art Of Noise on the July drop.
Did anyone manage to get the Howard Jones 12 inch RSD album? The shop I went to didn’t get any copies and everywhere else seems to be sold out. I am surprised that would be so popular!
Just found a Uk seller on ebay selling these for £27.44 with free postage. When I looked 20 mins ago he still had 12+ copies.
Thanks, I would be amazed if that is legit but may give it a go.
How the hell is that possibly supposed to help independant bricks and mortar record shops if people are accessing bulk copies of what would have been a good seller. Admittedly it isn’t a fleecing price, but pretty sure that isn’t the point. Someone, somewhere is letting this stuff leak out and probably making a few quid in the process.
I would think it’s an actual record shop listing those. Perhaps one without a transactional website.
I took a punt and ordered through the ebay seller. Just had a message from them saying that they hadn’t received their pre-orders and would be cancelling my order and giving a refund. I am not overly surprised!
Arrived in Edinburgh at 8:50 and managed to get the last Ultravox CD after waiting one and a half hours in the queue. £10.95 is OK for a double disc set.
Happy Record Store Day everyone!
Just wanted to send a huge thank you to you Paul.
Without your RSD preview I would have missed out on two releases that I prize even more highly than the Ultravox release. The two Steely Dan albums have been on my Discogs want list for years but the prices have been astronomical. I havent been paying attention to RSD this year so would not have seen them if not for you. So, many many thanks indeed.
Also picked up Ultravox on Vinyl and CD
Tears for Fears (Vinyl and CD) – also only became aware of this after seeing it on SDE
Wire PF456 Deluxe
Sister Ray was as organised as usual and not too busy – managed to get in and out by 08:50.
The Tears For Fears CD is NOT available in the United States. (Only the vinyl is.) And, of course, it’s the #1 item I want. I want to slap the idiot who made that decision.
And it looks like the Ultravox CD is RSD 1 in the UK, and RSD 2 in the US.
Yeah, that tops my want list as well. The vinyl appears on the US list as ‘RSD First’ vs an exclusive so I assume there will be further issues which hopefully include a wider CD release.
Completely agree this is a dud decision. My local store had multiple vinyls this afternoon, so those may sit. There’s a comment in the third RSD thread about a general release at Amazon UK in September. Maybe we’ll then see a CD of it. I would like to hear how it actually sounds by someone who purchased it. I bet we’ll see song postings on YouTube soon.
I can confirm that the TFF CD will get a regular release…
Hello Paul! I’m very glad to know about the TFF live at Massey Hall. When the cd is going to be available for order? By the way, TFF gigged 4 or 5 nights at Massey Hall, do you know if the concert of this cd is the same concert on the Scenes From the Big Chair video?
That’s what I’m curious about too. The performance of Broken that was on the old vinyl (ripped on the SFTBC box set) is definitely not the same as in the film, so there must have been multiple nights recorded. So how come there are no usable recordings of the two encores? (Nevermind that they have been included in radio broadcasts.)
I really want to get that Poly Styrene album. Unfortunately it is not available in the USA. There are three RSD UK exclusive including Translucence that I want. I guess I will check the usual suspects for an overpriced copy after the fact.
It’s interesting that several big ticket/boxes are either being released on Friday or went available for preorder last/this week… Black Sabbath, Def Leppard, Beach Boys, George Harrison, etc. maybe I just missed it in previous years but I find it strange that these releases are competing with RSD for our collective cash. Some tough decisions to be made for certain
Interested in ultravox cd. Are they also overpriced like the vinyl? Hope not. Anyway really want it for the instrumental.
CDs are normally priced. That Ultravox one is only £10 on my local store’s site. Bargain!
great! also found it on my local store site. Does your local store also happen to be in Kingston?
Yes to TFF live on CD!!! Paul thanks for showing off these items, I now think I’ll be trying to get into a store on RSD again, I have a feeling it’ll be easier to score the 2 CD offerings shown here than most of the vinyl offerings.
I would get the TFF cd, or vinyl if no cd, if I could. But I won’t be able to get out on Saturday. I doubt there will be any online for sale from shops later in the day, but I’ll check anyhow.
Lots of the mint vinyl available on Discogs at regular prices. Worth a look.
The Cd does seem difficult to get hold of. The vinyl has a download code if that’s of interest.
The Tears For Fears CD is currently available from Banquet Records – £13.79 incl. UK postage:

Thanks to @Skreama for linking Banquet on the other thread.
I’d go with Love and Dancing by The League Unlimited Orchestra or Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing by Soft Cell as the first remix lps. Both fantastic albums, loved every note of them.
I’m so looking forward to the Tears for Fears… the vinyl is on my wish list, the CD escaped me (would sit nicely next to my TFF boxed sets). That Ultravox vinyl looks stunning too!
Thanks Paul! Great video and some extras to add to my wish list!
It’s going to be an expensive month for sure!
Thanks Paul. So excited. I hope the same vinyl will be released in the USA. Totally Jealous you have these already. I’m an ’80s kid too. Thank you for all you do to promote bands!
This whole CD / Vinyl thing is daft. It’s “record store” day not record day. Surely a RECORD STORE can sell both CDs and records or whatever you want to call them!
Agreed. Ignoring CD buyers was always one of my two peeves about RSD. The other: reissuing previously released material. I collect music, not records.
As such, I’ll pick up the Vienna CD for the instrumental tracks, even though I bought the CD/DVD box last year.
As someone based in the North West it doesn’t seem a great idea to be chasing around the local record stores in Greater Manchester – where non essential travel isn’t advised – looking for items on our wish-list. Looks like some of us will have to wait for the online sale and hope there are still a few nuggets remaining. RSD is a brilliant idea, badly executed.
Not much grabbing my attention this year but will certainly go for the 12” album if for no reason other than nostalgia. Picked my original copy up cheap in Woolies in 1988 and it soundtracked my summer that year.
Nice video, thanks for the preview! There’s some interesting releases, that I have zero hope of snagging. Still fun to window shop!
About the 12″ Album being the first remix – it was preceded by at least The League Unlimited Orchestra Love & Dancing (July ’82), Thomas Dolby’s Blinded By Science (Jan ’83), and Eurythmics Touch Dance (May ’84). Not to mention Duran Duran’s Carnival (Sept ’82), but at 24 minutes, that was more properly an EP — or “mini LP” as it was unironically ironically labeled in the US. But that one led to the masterpiece Rio US remix, which is also not a “proper” remix album, since it’s only one side/side one redone.
Anyway, my point is if these acts were doing the remix thing, others would have been as well.
The Tears for Fears was my most anticipated release this RSD (one of my favourite bands, performing a mouthwatering set list at one of my favourite local venues!) but that vinyl release is so underwhelming for the usual high RSD pricing model. No booklet of live photos? Repro of tour guide? It’s so rare for the CD choice to be so clear!
Yeah CD for me too, based on the prices! And the fact that there’s no download code provided with the vinyl…as far as I can tell?
Apologies, I meant to say in the video that Tears For Fears was the one vinyl in this selection that DOES come with a download card.
Hmm. No sign of a download card in my copy of the Tears For Fears 2LP. Bummer. Maybe the cards are only included in the UK copies?
Interesting coating/treatment on the inside of the inner sleeves on that one. I assume it’s supposed to protect the vinyl, not sure I believe it does so.
There was a download card with my copy of Prince Truth LP, so that’s a definite plus.
