SDE’s 2021 Record Store Day video preview #3

Record Store Day returns on Saturday 12 June, which is one of two ‘drop days’ this year (down from three in 2020). The second date is 17 July.

Keeping with tradition, SDE is pleased to present a series of video previews this week of selected items. Today we focus on albums, singles or EPs issued in the 1990s.

Remember, the rules are relaxed again this year, so if you can’t make it to your local record shop (if you have one!) then online orders are permitted from 6pm on the day. Good luck and let’s hear what your most desired items are – leave a comment!

  1. I wasn’t gonna do any RSD, but caved on the Ultravox CD got dirt cheap on discogs. Wanted the instrumental album to compliment the box set. Shame it wasn’t in the box set.

  2. Camped out all night with a few other hardy souls so was ready to go in within a few minutes of the 8am opening time at my local record shop. Great laugh as always and got all 10 records I was after. Looking forward to July’s 2nd drop: even though that’s only 4 records required I will probably still end up sat outside all night…

  3. Banquet just cancelled my TfF live CD order using a questionable explanation “misdirected stock to elsewhere”. Never again. Poor Customer Service. Miffed.

        1. Interesting – so you received your TFF CD from Banquet – from stock that they are telling people they didn’t receive! Nice…

    1. That also happened to me. But, I was able to score a CD from Townsend Music last night. And it shipped today. I was so lucky to stumble onto that. They only had a couple copies. Maybe that’s where their stock went. ha!

  4. This year I didn’t go out to a single record shop. One record shop here in Belgium sort of promised to put some records aside for me but it didn’t happen and I’ve done the right thing in buying everything online from record shops here, there and everywhere; a true Euro 2020 of record shops from Lithuania to Sweden, through the Netherlands, France and yes UK (Reflex CD). The most difficult record to find at a good price was Haim’s single ‘Gasoline’. All the rest was at ‘normal’ prices everywhere, except of course that normal means at least 30% more than standard prices. Probably the least popular titles were the two double live lp’s from The Police, still a lot of stock everywhere which doesn’t surprise me at a such high price (£35/€40).

  5. Walked into the Orpington, which elegantly combines a fab restaurant and record store, in the town with the same name to find an excellent selection. Picked up the Grateful Dead Paris box set which was my main target for this drop and could not resist the Suzi Quatro live album. Will have to wait another week to enjoy the Grateful Dead as this is now wrapped up as a fathers’ day present. In the evening had not much trouble buyin TFF and The Replacements vinyl via SisterRay.

    1. Thanks for the link. Was still working when I tried several hours after you posted. Finger crossed it comes through to California.

      1. After taking my order and paying them, Banquet sent an email saying they expect stock in the next couple of days but may not be able to complete my order. WTF! I thought I had a copy secured and didn’t try elsewhere. If I miss out I will be miffed. Bad approach!

    2. Just got a second email from Banquet (after getting the one Derek L got yesterday as well) to say they aren’t getting stock after all. That’s poor form and the second order in a row of mine with them that this has happened on…

      1. I am officially miffed. Order cancellation email and PayPal refund came during the night. Will never try to order from them again. I am appalled that they apparently automated ordering without knowing how much stock they’d get on RSD. They deserve all the bad publicity they get for pulling this stunt.

  6. The three items I was interested in (TFF CD, Ultravox CD, and Suede LP) were UK only (for now), so I decided to participate in RSD once RSD items became available online. I’ve placed orders for all three of these releases….fingers crossed my orders are filled.

  7. My first ever RSD. I’ve no record deck but still have stacks of old vinyl, so at some point am tempted to maybe get one. That said CDs do sound better than vinyl.
Spur of the moment got up early and went to VOD in Mold. The TFF CD had long gone and it did feel as if many in the queue ahead of me were just bagging up records to stick on eBay.
I bought the TFF vinyl in the hope I’ll get a deck. Checked eBay and it’s full of the vinyl and CD. Just so unfair.
Anyway, paid over the odds for a CD on eBay and may keep the vinyl sealed and consider selling it at a later point to recoup my extra cost for the CD!
Don’t see why RSD should be vinyl only, it’s about the shops, not the format. Suspect there’ll be more CDs in time and I’ll get more involved.

  8. Got Joey Ramone from my local store, all I wanted for Drop1.
I’ve 2 titles on my list for Drop2. Not much, I know, but these (the Sisters of Mercy and the March Violets) are 100% musthaves as I am a serious collector of both band.

  9. I have been lucky enough to get a “Who-Face dances 40th anniversary” on Yello and blue vinyl. It is a thing of beauty and the sound is perfect.
Got the two Steely Dan to, but sadly no TFF in my local shop.

    1. ultravox and TFF CDs also on Banquet Records … still. Although it looks like “new stock” for the ultravox as it was out of stock at 6pm last night.

    2. Good call. I’ve been hunting the Vienna CD from France and was getting a bit frustrated at mark-up prices and postage. Just bought one from Banquet for £13 and change delivered. Would recommend to European buyers.

        1. I think they’re a bit overwhelmed. I emailed them and received this response :

please forgive the semi-automated response, we’ve received around three times our usual number of orders since the Record Store Day items went on sale online on 12th June.

our small team is working round the clock to dispatch orders as quickly as possible, but as stated on the website dispatch will take considerably longer than our usual ‘next business day’ turnaround. we usually clear orders from the night RSD items go on sale by the end of the following week.

you’ll receive automated emails via the website when your order status changes. due to the volume of orders, there may be a couple of days between your order being picked and dispatched.

answers to some frequently asked questions:

          • if you’ve received a confirmation email with an order number, we have received your order and it will be processed as soon as possible.
          • the item you ordered is reserved for you.
          • if you registered with the site after placing your order, that order won’t appear in your order history but subsequent orders will.
          • at this very busy time, it’s not possible to combine orders. sorry.
          • in common with other retailers, we cannot cancel your order after it has entered the dispatch process. you do of course have the right to return items you do not want within 14 days of receipt – please contact us before doing this.
          • standard UK delivery is not tracked. if you selected Signed For delivery at checkout, the status will update when delivery is attempted – please reply to this message for further information.
          • international shipping is via Airmail as shown on our website. this is not a tracked service. tracked international shipping is not available at this time.
          • there’s lots more information about ordering from us here: https://www.banquetrecords.com/ordering-online

apologies that we can’t be more specific at present, and thanks for your patience as we work to get orders to customers as speedily as we can.

  10. Rip Ian Wallace of big sparra vinyl,Ayr,, sadly found dead in his shop A few months back aged 61 great guy,big fan of rsd, queues round the block

  11. Since hmv pulled out my town has NO record stores left to visit! Ordered the Tears For Fears Live on vinyl from Rough Trade – queuing was okay. Had the Ultravox cd in my basket as well for a while but changed my mind and dropped it, which I now regret!
Just watched my best purchase of the week – the REAL Pink Floyd together for the last time ever at Live 8! Dave looked glum but Roger was clearly determined to enjoy it one last time. Breath, Money, Wish You Were Here and Comfortably Numb all live in glorious surround sound. 4 dvds of top live music for a used price of £6! Even if nothing else played on it, it wouldn’t matter. Bicker away Dave and Roger – we’ll always have Live8!

    1. Since my local Town Doncaster has a HMV stuffed full of vinyl, but no other record stores to visit, it was Sheffield once again to be 6th in the queue for RSD. Spent £200 & got all that I required & got the last copy of Toots & Maytals LP. Also the TFF CD, they were playing the Ultravox instumentals in the shop :) I have still got the their 7″ picture discs & signed Vienna LP, although I never managed to aquire that pencil moustache & sideburns.

      1. Thanks so much for the link. Much appreciated. I ordered the Tears For Fears cd Live At Massey Hall. I tried Rough Trade online for this, but it said notify me, but banquet let me order it

      2. Thanks for this, I didn’t really want to spend the extra on the vinyl for this and the Tears For Fears, just picked them both up on CD from Banquet.

      3. Thanks – ordered TFF & Ultravox CDs. Still both in stock at 4pm Sunday. Use the link from Skreama or search engine on their site. Don’t click their Record Store Day page because they aren’t included there (probably why they still have stock).
Much kudos also to Banquet for good pricing. Many shops now seem to be adding additional mark ups nowadays. I know dealers state very little profit margins on RSD titles and I’m sure they have their reasons. I’ve seen the Grateful Dead box ranging from £89.99 to £120 at official shops. I bought Def Leppard Oxford LPs for £26.99 but I’ve also seen it for £29.99, £32.99, £34.99 and £35.99 – at official shops.

      4. Thanks so much. I hunted around last night but couldn’t find a copy anywhere so had pretty much given up on finding one at a reasonable price. £10.80 incl. UK postage is an absolute bargain.

      5. A huge thank you too! Just picked up the Vienna cd from Banquet Records via your link. As per my earlier postings I had and then gave up this cd on the Rough Trade website because of the extra £4.99 postage (it wasn’t a must have for me but interested to hear). Banquet Records have charged just 80 pence in postage! Excellent.

        1. ultravox was out of stock at banquet last night at 6pm and the only place that had it was rough trade, so i stumped for the £5 p&p. thankfully i was able to order it today at banquet AND cancel my RT order. saving about £4.20 in postage.

      6. Just had an email from Banquet re TFF CD advising that they dont have stock yet so cant guarantee delivery? They will update on position in a couple of days……

        1. I’ve had a similar experience with Banquet on prior orders. Hence, my “fingers crossed” comment…

Good luck to everyone who ordered from them.

    2. Ah…Live8. The only time I saw the four of them playing together. Magical evening. The roar from the crowd as the heartbeats started was immense. I’ve seen Roger Waters a few times, even with Nick Mason on drums at Hyde Park on The DSOTM tour, but not Gilmour. Looking forward to Nick Mason Saucerful of Secrets next year after two postponements, so hopefully third time lucky. I doubt I’ll see any of them play live again, either because they can no longer manage or want to or it’ll be too bloody expensive!! I just wonder if this is all some elaborate “publicity stunt” to garner more interest in the Animals possible release?!

  12. I got the TFF 2LP, no sign of the CD. Bypassed the Joni record, my wife is making noises like I should go back for it. Grabbed the Prince LP, listening to it now, it’s the best Prince release I’ve heard since Sign of the Times.
I was pretty frustrated to miss out on the Ultravox releases – turns out they’re delayed until July in the US. I will have another shot at them next month!

  13. I wish Record Store Day featured CDs too. I ditched my turntable over thirty years ago and never looked back. God bless all of you who still love listening to vinyl… no judgment here, seriously. And I get it: RSD is meant to focus on the old-school music experience, as well as draw people into smaller stores for the exclusives. It would just be cool if some of these special releases were on CD as well. I’m just a spoiled brat, is all.

      1. It’s already here – over the last 5 years I’ve been able to swan about all over the internet buying up what I wanted for pennies. It’s a different story now. Original 80’s CD pressings are becoming very popular as collectors realise that the first 20 years of the ‘re-master’ era wasn’t always beneficial to musical enjoyment, and sometimes going backwards is better.
Thankfully listeners are now paying attention to who masters their digital music.
Between Discogs and the Hoffman forum, the CD market has been slowly morphing into something more akin to the antique market. It’s all about the version.

  14. Best wishes go out to Casbah Records in Greenwich. Excellent service and managed to get Suede, Bert Jansch, Ultravox (LP) and Flaming Lips.
Gutted I couldn’t get the Ultravox CD, Had a search thru Sounds/Monorail/Banquet and all either sold out or never had it in the first place

    1. I eventually found the Ultravox CD on Rough Trade’s site after 6pm but had to sit in a queue for 45 minutes to get in. I did a check on a load of other sides from the RSD website and they all had it as sold out. Not sure how many copies there were, but it felt a bit like the mystical release that you hear about but never actually see.

      1. I’m glad you got one. I had one but let it go. Got my tactics all wrong! Queued and was in by 6:05pm but as you were only given 20 mins before being kicked off, I dived onto the TFF vinyl which I really wanted, bagged one and bought it and then started browsing for others. Found the Ultravox cd and put it in my basket only to realise I would have to pay a 2nd £4.99 postage charge. Should have held my nerve and bought both together.
I’ve actually never heard the Vienna album but thought this was a good way in to hearing it, especially with a Steven Wilson mix and instrumental version added. His Yes instrumental versions are terrific. Anyway, I baulked at the extra fiver for postage. Regret it now but there you go!

  15. Got everything I could afford but not everything I wanted:

    Wire PF456 2 x 10” and 7”
    Brian Jonestown Massacre/Telescopes 10”
    Suicide 10”
    Poly Styrene LP
    The Groundhogs LP

    1. Got everything I wanted – Steely Dan albums, Kinks, The Who, BC Camplight, Conor Oberst, Flaming Lips, Supergrass, Prince, Belle and Sebastian. Good haul and great atmosphere on the queue. The gorgeous weather helped too.
Big up to Badlands Records, Cheltenham. I only want a few on the second drop, but I really want them (Lou Reed, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Stones, Love and Richmond Fontaine) so guess I’ll be setting the alarm for 5am again. I really hope they go back to one drop again next year. Happy listening folks.

  16. Managed to get to four stores inside the first two hours and just about completed my list of eleven titles. The Knebworth 1990 12″ Singles seemed really hard to find but I picked up the last copy of the Genesis one at the last of the four!

  17. Back to normal ish RSD, after last year’s. Nice to be back in a two hour queue with like minded music lovers. Lots of good banter whilst waiting. Well organised and big thumbs up to Slide Records in Bedford. Got all my wants, Motorhead, remember buying the original 40 yes ago, Linkin Park, liked this since it was released in US RSD last year and Noel Gallagher, looks great on split black/yellow vinyl, as mentioned in other posts tracklist is debatable. Roll on Drop 2.

  18. Quite happy with my haul for drop 1.

    Love spit love
    Roisin Murphy
    Garbage
    Chemical brothers
    Cure
Ultravox (cd)…..got the deluxe vinyl on release with the bonus comp on clear vinyl.

    A nice eclectic mix

      1. As soon as I saw the Prince lp, I knew I was going to buy it. The acoustic album was the best part of the Crystal Ball 4 cd set (along with the title track itself).

I got the last copy in the shop and later on reflected that this was definitely a case of thank heavens I bought it. I’d have certainly regretted it if I hadn’t.

        The Ultravox cd sounds excellent.

      2. Paul – Any idea on how limited Tatu is ? it seems to be like gold dust, the only record store I can find offering it online has jacked up the price to £59.99 !

Anyway I got the Bernard Butler release I was after, Tatu was an oddity I thought may pick up as a back up but it looks to be the other way around in terms of availability.

  19. Just in case anyone hadn’t seen – the live Tears For Fears is showing on Amazon U.K. as going on general release on September 3rd.

    1. Interesting – it looks as though there isn’t a vinyl release in September though. I read it that there is CD and 5CD box set options. Trying to work out in my head what else could be on the 5CD box?

    2. It’s listed on Amazon as a 2CD set. the RSD album was a single disc. Wonder what the second disc is? (assuming Amazon got it wrong, personally).

  20. I wanted one item: Prince “The Truth” on vinyl and didn’t bother to go to a store. Ordered it from Discogs at a premium but not too bad. €10 more (plus shipping) than if I had gone to the store, wait in line and risk them not having it. I’m fine with it.

  21. Just back from my crawl around my local record store. It is quite small but I managed to get everything on my list! Tears For Fears! Future Sound of London “We Have explosive”, Suede, Ultravox, Hall & Oates 7″ and Republica coloured vinyl! There’ll be no scouring Ebay or Discogs and wishing things were different this year!

    1. Just had a look at my TFF vinyl. Glad to see you were listed in the thank you’s Paul!! (now hoping I can score the CD after 6pm as my local record store only does records).

      1. Managed to score a TFF CD from Banquet in Kingston, and finally got my other “bought on Vinyl would love on CD”, the Ultravox, from Rough Trade. Man their queuing system is rough, but it beats the website crashing.

  22. Republica vinyl is a must for me (one of the must underrated albums from that era, maybe for the success of Ready to go) and the new Athens from the Bluetones too. Thanks for the video, as good as always.

  23. Well done Paul, the videos were all excellent.

I’m off to the beach tomorrow but need to try and get into town to get the Ultravox cd and possibly the Tears For Fears cd. Watch out how ‘surprised’ record companies are that the cds will sell well, and that they then start to pay future rsd cd releases a bit more attention.

    1. Apparently the TFF CD is a) limited to the UK and b) limited to something like 950 copies. I think the record company is either hedging their bets on whether it will sell or just pandering the ebay generation who will have these up on “your local auction site” before midnight tonight for a hugely inflated price. (already seen a listing for the TFF vinyl + CD for over £120 and it’s not even 11am!)
