Shakespears Sister’s Hormonally Yours is the next SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio

#4 in the ongoing SDE Surround Series

Blank Bluray Case isolated on white background. 3D render

In January this year, SDE launched the SDE Surround Series, a long-term collaborative initiative that involves us partnering with like-minded labels to bring you exclusive physical blu-ray audio editions of albums with spatial audio mixes (Dolby Atmos, 5.1 etc.). So far we have delivered a trio of new albums: Tears For Fears’ The Tipping Point (via Concord Records), xPropaganda’s The Heart Is Strange (via UMC/ZTT) and Gilbert O’Sullivan’s latest album Driven (released today!)

Your enthusiasm and support for this venture has allowed us to continue and today I am thrilled to announce the first album reissue – #4 in the SDE Surround Series – which is Shakespears Sister’s 1992 album Hormonally Yours!

This is a record that will need no introduction. It went double-platinum in Britain and Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit enjoyed incredible success with the number one single Stay, which took up residence at the top of the UK chart for eight full weeks in February/March/April of 1992! The song connected with music fans around the globe and it reached #4 in America and was a top ten single in Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and beyond.

Of course, the album is so much more than just that one song and there was further chart success in the UK as ‘I Don’t Care’ followed ‘Stay’ into the UK top 10 and ‘Hello (Turn Your Radio On)’ was a top 20 single in November 1992.

The SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio of Hormonally Yours will feature the following audio streams:

  • Dolby Atmos Mix
  • 5.1 Surround Mix (DTS HD Master Audio)
  • Hi-res Stereo Mix (96/24)

The two spatial audio mixes have been created by Grammy-winning mixer, engineer and producer Caesar Edmunds in association with the original album’s producer Alan Moulder (acting as executive mixer).

This will be the only way to enjoy these mixes via a physical product and to ‘hold the music in your hands’.

Reasons you should own this blu-ray:

  • It’s the only way to enjoy these spatial audio mixes of Hormonally Yours via a physical product
  • The DTS HD 5.1 mix of the album is totally exclusive
  • You don’t have to subscribe to a streaming service like Tidal or Apple Music to hear the spatial audio mixes
  • It’s yours to keep forever. You own the product, you are not renting it from a ‘DSP’ (digital service provider)
  • You love ‘Holding the Music in Your Hands’, so here’s your chance!
  • The blu-ray audio is a great format for audio and you don’t want to see it die off
  • Supporting SDE with these initiatives is indeed leading to similar collaborations with labels/artists and we are keen to bring your more in 2022

Hormonally Yours on SDE-exclusive blu-ray will be released on 30 September 2022 in collaboration with London Records. Pre-order the SDE-exclusive blu-ray by using this link to the SDE shop or the button below.

The pre-order window for this limited edition blu-ray audio opens today and will close in 7 days’ time. You will not be able to order this product after the morning of 29 July 2022. This is a one-time production run and numbers manufactured will be published at a later date, so you will know how limited this physical product is.

TECHNICAL NOTES: This blu-ray audio requires a blu-ray player. Decoding the Dolby Atmos mix requires a Dolby Atmos-certified soundbar or a Dolby Atmos-compatible AV Receiver/Amp. The Dolby Atmos mix will ‘fold down’ to 5.1 or stereo if a Dolby Atmos decoder is not detected.
EU SHIPPING NOTES: If you are ordering from the EU please be aware that that goods may be subject to import VAT when they arrive from the UK. The prices the SDE shop charge you do not include VAT.

  1. Thank you so much Paul for these Surround Series . And what a good suprise to get a TTF slipcase bonus !

I must admit i was a little disappointed with the spatial mix of this Shakespears Sister album (at first i wonder if my central speaker was broken ! ) , but i enjoy the album .

    Thanks again Paul !

  2. First of all, I would like to express my sincere thanks to Paul for all his efforts with these exclusives. I really appreciate it.
In Belgium, the import of this BluRay is a bit of an expensive treat. With customs and import fees, the bluray costs 60 euros (£52). I knew that in advance, but, well, I really like this album and I have a Dolby Atmos installation. And I just love “Hello (Turn your radio on)”.

All in all, my disappointment is huge. I already have quite a lot of music mixed in 5.1 (SACD, DVD-Audio, BluRay) and a tiny bit of music in Dolby Atmos. Depeche Mode, for example, really know how to use all the 5.1 channels. In the case of Hormonally Yours, the 5.1 and Dolby Atmos mixes are a bad joke. There is nothing clear and precise isolated in the different channels. It’s just mush spread all over the place.

My theory is simple: London Records/Universal must have lost the multi-track tapes. That would explain a lot. Specifically: the impossibility of offering real 2022 remixes and new 5.1 or Dolby Atmos mixes. The recently released “instrumental” mixes were surely found on the master stereo 2.0 mixed tapes of the time. Multitracks are not necessary for this. For every 7″ single A-side track, it is normal in studio to systematically make 3 versions: #1 “single edit/mix/remix”, #2 “instrumental” & #3 “TV playback” (= “instrumental” + backing vocals & effects).

I extracted the BluRay content with “MakeMKV”, and then extracted the different sound tracks. First surprise, the songs are much too compressed, whereas, precisely, a BluRay audio leaves all the space to express subtly all the frequencies, even the low volume sounds. It’s not as bad with “Stay” because of the very soft introduction, though. Second surprise, “Loseless Audio Checker” claims that some songs are “upsampled”?!?

Were the multi-track tapes stored in Los Angeles? Do you remember the desastrous fire in Universal Studios? The fire on June 1, 2008, destroyed anywhere from 120,000 to 175,000 master recordings.

Guys, if you really have lost them, why not use some excellent “demixing” tools available nowadays, which would allow you to at least isolate the vocals, drums, bass, etc. a little? Of course it’s far from perfect but at least it allows you to “play a bit” and create new mixes. Fans who buy premium products to get Dolby Atmos mixes aren’t stupid and it’s so obvious that there’s nothing clearly isolated in all those channels. Just enjoy the 2.0 mixed version…

    1. Sorry you aren’t enjoying it. While I wouldn’t claim this is up there with Steven Wilson’s work on TFF, the guitar on ‘I Don’t Care’, for example, is quite discrete, so I’m not sure I agree that “There is nothing clear and precise isolated in the different channels”. I don’t think they have lost the multi-tracks because they would have told me that.

    2. Idels,
I agree on the audio quality. If you run the stereo tracks through an analyzer (see attached for ‘Stay’ example) you can see that they are just CD quality in upsampled to 24/96, clearly no hi-res content present. Disappointing to say the least.

    3. I agree. I am listening to Atmos mix now, and comparing to original CD. There’s tons of stuff MISSING from surround mix. Background vocals are way too low, some guitar parts are too low, effects completely not there. Opening track on the surround mix has vocals too low, too dry and is missing some parts, many other songs do too. Shame because the album is great.

  3. I have just listened to this and would also agree it is a bit underwhelming.
The resolutions are Stereo 24bit 96kHz, Surround both 24bit 48kHz.
After listening to the entire album I was also suspicious of the use of the centre and sub channels. Analysis of the DTS surround mix using Audacity shows that there is no .1 (LFE) content so this should really have been listed as DTS 5.0. Most centre channel content is so low that it is pointless as it cannot really be heard.
As I don’t have the ability to listen to the actual ATMOS mix – it decodes as Dolby TrueHD on my system and sounds near enough the same – I can only comment on the DTS mix.

I am very glad Paul has taken up the challenge to liaise with artists and release multichannel Blu-ray Audios as all the other SDE releases I have (TFF, xPropoganda) are very impressive but sadly in my opinion this is just ok. Looking forward to the ENO release.

Paul any chance you could convince Brian to produce a Blu-ray mix of Apollo?

  4. I just received the Blu-ray with the nice additional slipcase for Tipping Point (thanks!). Looking forward to the Eno disc and Propaganda slipcase too. This is a wonderful series and a look forward to many more releases like this in future. Hormonally Yours was always a wonderful record. The Blu-ray is sonically superiorto the CD, but not a stellar release. The Atmos mix is pleasant enough, although somewhat underwhelming in terms of use of the 7.1 system’s potential; centre used some echo only, and the rears for some isolated instruments. Goodbye Cruel World sounds particularly off to me, but the rest is fine.

  5. I’ve just had a listen through my Dolby digital system and as far as I can tell there’s nothing coming through the centre speaker and the rest doesn’t sound great either. Compared to TFF Tipping Point blu ray (which sounds amazing) this is, I’m afraid to say a bit rubbish.

    1. I don’t think there’s much in the centre speaker for Steve Lipson’s xPropaganda Atmos Mix, either. Wilson is the benchmark of course, although obviously I don’t agree this is “a bit rubbish”

      1. Sorry, it’s not personal. I’m still grateful that you have the passion to bring these things to life. Honestly when I listen to TFF in 5.1 I get totally immersed in its glory. Shakespears sister sounds like I’ve pressed the surround sound button on an old stereo. Maybe disappointed would have been better than “a bit rubbish” I hope others enjoy the mix more than me

  6. Hi. Just received my copy with the extra slipcase for the TFF blu-ray. Thank you very much for this opportunity.

I have an issue though. As I’m not familiar with this album, I tried to listen to the stereo track first. And to get the most of it I have to process it through my computer in order to play the album with my DAC at full resolution (my blu-ray player doesn’t have a good analog stereo output). It was then that I saw the waveform of the whole PCM track in the software I use to “slice” the whole thing into 12 different tracks (as I usually do for every blu-ray audio that I purchase). I cannot upload a photograph here to show you, but basically I get a very very compressed audio file (in terms of dynamics I mean, it is indeed a PCM 24bit/96kHz file) at low amplitude / volume. And the listening experience is of very low quality, very far from even CD standard.

Has anyone been listening to the stereo part of the blu-ray ? How does it perform on your hi-fi system ? Do you have the same issue as I do ? Is it meant to be like that ?

    1. I listened to the stereo hi-res mix directly through the universal BD/DVD/CD Denon player I have as part of my setup and, aside from the opening track (which others have commented on, has a muddy, deliberately grunge-y sound) I was impressed with the sonics. It actually needed turning UP a little from my normal listening…and some of the tracks sounded really amazing.

  7. Mine arrived today, Paul. Absolutely brilliant. Thanks for all your hard work. It’s so nice to receive something so well packed and the TFF slipcase was an excellent bonus too.

Loving the surround mix. Hearing things for the first time. Audio heaven.

Can’t wait to see what’s next.

  8. Mine just arrived. Fantastic. The slip case is really a great touch and shows the thought and care put into this series. Looking forward to receiving Gilbert when he has recovered and Eno and the XPropaganda slip case. Just a note on shipping and extra costs. I think the costs are clear before you order. I live in the EU so need to pay double VAT because Paul does not reduce the price for the UK VAT he does not need to pay to HMRC plus a EUR 5 handling charge which goes in the pocket of the German post office. I am not particularly happy with the double VAT but I have to appreciate that a small firm does not always have the bandwidth to deal with these things and I have the choice not to order. I also think that rather than abusing his “monopoly” position to run an extortion racket, Paul is rather a “seller of last resort”. The big labels don’t want to touch this Blu Ray audio format and Paul is the only person willing to spend his time marketing it, selling it and ultimately extending its life because he cares about physical product.

  9. My first purchase of any of these limited editions and before I even receive it I have a sour taste.

I understand obviously these SDE releases are limited, and niche, but having a monopoly whereby the only online store to purchase them from is through SDE and fulfilled by D2C Remedy Fulfilment that charge a compulsory minimum £5 postage and packaging for 48-hour delivery on an item that would be classed as an up to 500g large letter is extortion.

Not the fault of the fulfillment company, but to pay for the ‘privilege’ of a 48-hour delivery on mine with the Royal Mail strikes has meant my package despatched last Wednesday and has only just been picked up for processing today at the Home Counties North Mail Center, and likely will not be delivered until Thursday.

    1. Let’s be clear, you knew the P&P charges BEFORE you purchased, so you could have chosen not to order if you felt it was too much. The price is set by SDE by the way, it’s nothing to do with whichever fulfilment partner we might work with (there is no “minimum” anything).

What I notice is that when people complain they just focus on postage. You are paying for three things: 1) Packaging – proper protective cardboard wraps, not jiffy bags, 2) Packing the item (someone has to do it, and that person wants to be paid) and 3) A Tracked 48 Royal Mail postal service.

With Tears For Fears we did offer a cheaper non-tracked service which was a total nightmare with parcels getting lost, lots of customer service emails, etc. We are a very small operation and the tracked service may be a bit more expensive but it’s much more reliable and provides some certainty and a higher level of customer service (you can see where your parcel is instead of emailing us and waiting for an answer).

When this was announced in July, we were not to know there would be a strike on the day of release. That’s just unfortunate. You should probably direct that complaint to Royal Mail not SDE.

  10. Received it yesterday and was also very pleasantly surprised to get the TFF slipcase. Thank you very much!

Mostly loving the surround and Atmos touches to one of my most beloved albums, but I don’t know what happened with Goodbye Cruel World. It seems to have been mixed from alternative takes or something, it is muffled on my system and isn’t the killer opening track it used to be. My favourite touches are mixed away or missing, but I guess it’s a new take on an old song and I’ll try harder to get into it.

    No offence?!

    Thanks!

    1. No offence taken… Goodbye Cruel World definitely has a more ‘grungey’ kind of a sound than some of the other tracks on the record. Can pretend I know it well enough to take a stance on alternate take or not…

    2. My SDE #4 arrived recently and at a “record” speed of only six days to the States. Things have certainly improved in that regard so no complaining about posage here. Ian067, I’m wondering if you’re comparing to the BTO mix of “Goodbye Cruel World?” There certainly is a difference between the two but I believe this is the original album version of the song. If the opportunity for the “Sacred Heart” album ever arises it would be most welcome.

  11. Happy to report that this arrived this morning with the TFF slipcase enclosed and I am listening as I write this comment. It is an absolute joy to listen to in 5.1 surround sound and would like to commend all of the team at SDE for bringing us this wonderful surround series. Quick question Paul.. Will an xpropaganda slipcase become available?

  12. Thanks Paul, also received my copy today. Listening to the 5.1 mix as I write this, sounding fine especially Are We In Love Yet. The numbered sleeve is an added bonus, just have to make sure I don’t miss a release now.
5 releases so far this year, hope with artist and record company backing, you’ll be able to double the releases next year.

    1. Thanks very much! Glad you’re enjoying SS. Yes, hope to up the ante a bit, but still pleased with 5 this year (should have been 6 if INXS hadn’t gone pear-shaped).

    1. Yes, I must have missed (or forgotten!) the bit about slipcases. Finding a very nice one for the TFF Blu-Ray also in my package was a very welcome surprise to me. Thanks!

  13. The last time I’ve ordered The Singles Party on CD, the remastered sound was totally compressed and brickwalled on louder parts. After that I’ve tried my luck with the LP Edition of Hormonally Yours and the Vinyl was warped. This time I’m going to wait for the reviews of both CD & Vinyl…

  14. Has there been a glitch in the system, Paul?

Even though the cut-off date has long passed, there was a link at the bottom of your e-mail yesterday and I was able to order after all!

I’m now excited, but also a little worried…

It hasn’t been mentioned on this site…should I keep my mouth (well, keyboard) shut?

    1. No glitch, we had some cancellation/contingency stock, hence it’s available again for a short time. I haven’t done a big post because there’s not that much stock…

  15. Is it still available? I know it says it’s not after the morning of the 29th, but it appears to be letting me through. Don’t want to pre-order if it’s no longer available!

  16. Paul, thank you so very much for this release. I have the Tears for Fears and xPropaganda both of which I adore. Keep these coming. It would be brilliant if you could do the new BANANARAMA Masquerade album as well.
    Thank you.

  17. Tonight I have ordered the Shakespears Sisters Blu-ray. I have a question : How do I get the slipcase for my Tears For Fears copy.

  18. Excellent release and I will order – although Brexit makes this a very costly endeavour indeed, with all fees and taxes and the bad exchange rate, I will pay close to 50 Euros for this release…

      1. I was thinking of digging that out but as have a temporary form of vertigo that’s a no-no!
The last time I heard it the constant face on screen was also a bit much.

    1. There’s a very good 5.1 mix of Oxygene on the 2 disc edition of Oxygene New Master Recording – it is, in fact the original recording though. I think that JMJ got sued by his old record company for using the original master tapes which he didn’t own the rights to and tried to pass it off as a new recording. Less bells and whistles than the Aero 5.1 mix. It’s hidden away in the extras on disc 2. Here’s the Amazon link.

  19. Hi Paul,
Received the Gilbert Blu Ray yesterday.
    Absolutely brilliant.
Great packaging and a fantastic album.
So good that Shindig magazine’s August issue gave it 5 stars and said that Driven was the best album of Gilbert’s career.

  20. I just took the final step of modifying my system from 7.1 + 2 speakers mounted above my fronts, to 7.1 + 4 mounted in the ceiling ahead and behind the listening location to achieve the optimal Atmos set up. After installation Wednesday, I spent a couple of evenings figuring out wiring problems, so it wasn’t until Saturday that I was able to recalibrate the system to my room with the additional speakers. I played my TFF and xPropaganda Blu-rays for the first time (been saving them for this long-planned occasion), and OMFG, I was so blown away by them I’ve ordered the Shakespears Sister Blu-ray! And that’s even though I don’t really know them or the album (as I have previously written, I missed the 1990s), but the sound field created by a full Atmos system is so amazing that I am sure it will sound stunning. I skipped getting the Gilbert O’Sullivan Blu-ray because I though it would not get more then one or two plays. Starting to wonder if that was a mistake.

Thank you for making these Blu-rays available, and long my the series continue!

    1. Maybe you should get yourself Kraftwerk’s 3-D- The Catalogue (there is/was a cheap 8-track version if you’re not really sure) DVD/BluRay-set. The 4-BluRay-set includes “all 8″* main albums newly recorded in atmos.

*Kraftwerk’s counting: not counting the first 3 albums but counting The Mix, that is only represented with one “new” song, that wasn’t originally on The Mix

      1. Hi Maxe, I’ve had the Kraftwerk 3-D Catalogue box since is it was released. I keep the smaller Blu-ray case out of the big box so I can play it without manhandling the box. It sounded good to excellent on my old system and I can’t wait to listen to it with the extra 2 speakers. Have been building my Atmos collection for a few years though it only comes to about 10 titles so far. The 3-D set shorted some of the albums and The Mix was a bit of a cheat using exactly the same performances of the songs from the other albums.

  21. Your endeavor into making Blu-rays is the best music news I’ve heard. The Blu-ray format should’ve been adopted instead of the ridiculous vinyl campaign which does not provide the quality, durability, ease-of-use, and vast amount of music storage space. Unfortunately vinyl is more profitable. The bullet points of why you should buy this release are exactly my thoughts. I just wish I liked this music. Please produce more blu-rays, hopefully you’ll make some that will have music I will buy. Nothing against Shakespeare’s Sisters, just not my thing. Not only is your website great, you are now producing very desirable products. Keep up the great work.

    1. I totally agree. 96/24 has been praised as sounding as close to reality as possible for digital music, and so a Blu-ray with a Stereo 2.0 PCM mix, 5.1 Dolby/DTS mix, 7.1 Dolby True HD or DTS Mix, and an Atmos mix covers the bases for those who think multichannel sound is a gimmick, and those with every level of multi-channel capability. I am saddened by the resurgence of vinyl because along with Mp3 and iTunes it effectively killed SACD and DVD-A, and prevented Blu-ray from being the dominant next step in physical music.

      1. I don’t have a multi-channel set-up, but now at least do have a specialist Blu-Ray/SACD player which makes Hi-Res discs sound amazing to my ears even in Stereo 2.0 – so I’m always looking to support Hi-Res formats. And this is an album that I only have as a (bronzing) old CD from 1992, so it could be quite a revelation. So I ordered.

    2. I was never a huge fan of theirs when they were a going concern but got the singles party recently and realised I’d been missing out. The track “Hello (Turn The Radio On)” for example won me over but granted tastes change as we grow older. Back then I was constantly on industrial tunes so maybe we get mellower with age. Well OK I still like the industrial…

  22. These blu-ray releases/announcements always give me a mix of excitement and frustration.

Excitement, because I think they’re a great idea (especially as a huge fan of TFF and the Shakeys) but frustration, because they always happen when I can’t afford them, LOL.

I missed the first three and I’ll have to miss this one as well, but thank you for creating these Paul. I hope they/you continue and I hope to support them/you in future – even though I just have a very basic cheap TV/cheap headphone set-up, LOL.

  23. Another instant buy. Will support the cause. I love the TFF Tipping point which I didn’t really appreciate till hearing in 5.1
Propaganda X is another of my favorites. Waiting for my Gilbert O’Sullivan to arrive and ordered the Pink Floyd Animals in 5.1
I haven’t heard Shakespear’s Sister but watched the videos. Looking forward to this and future releases.
Keep up the good work Paul. I’m from outside of Boston, Ma. USA and love 5.1 SDE editions. Thank you! Mark

  24. @pauls just read your Week in Review email and am very interested in the slipcase idea you’re exploring. This sounds a lovely way of being able to quickly identify them all as SDE editions in our collections. I look forward to hearing more about this

    1. I second this…and it now looks more than just an idea but a reality…the Gilbert one is being shipped, as will Shakespears Sister…I def want the TFF & xPropaganda ones…I’ll take slipcases over hype stickers, thank you very much Paul…can only imagine what #5 will be…already hit my sweet spot…

        1. Hi Paul,

Never mind #5; #6, #7 and #8 are even better!

As others have said, the slip case for Gilbert O’Sullivan is an excellent product uplift, and it’s very thoughtful to retro supply slips for TFF and Propaganda. Great marketing might cost more, but future sales are the end consequence. Thanks for organising Gilbert’s signature, another nice touch.

You’re raising the bar in looking after your customers, at a time when it is vital to supply some added value, to compete with streaming services.

What’s the strategy / ability to add additional songs / 12″ mixes etc. to the releases?

For fun, outside of some already mentioned, I’ll add the following ideas for future releases: Dare – The Human League, Malcolm McLaren – Duck Rock, Imagination – a greatest hits compilation – it’s their 40th anniversary, The The – Infected, Prefab Sprout – anything.

          Regards,

  25. After having bought a second edition of Tipping Point and become converted to Atmos music I have not hesitated to pre-order this! I have owned the original CD for 30 years and still love it! I can’t wait to hear the Atmos mix!

There are some good mixes and single versions out there which I would have loved to see brought into the fold for an anniversary edition. For example, I’ve always preferred the subtly different single mix of ‘Goodbye Cruel World’. I never managed to get that in stereo either. Never mind – This is going to be amazing! Thanks SDE!

  26. This is great news Paul. Like yourself, I have been a huge fan of surround sound releases since the early 00’s. I still have my Pioneer SACD player/amp and a good number of original SACD’s but I don’t currently have the room to deploy it. As such, I am enjoying my surround sound collection (DVD/BD) via my Sonos system. The Tipping Point release is sublime and I’m so glad that SDE is making these releases possible! From conception, a lot of hard work is clearly expended on these exclusives.

5.1 Holy grail for me? Yes ‘90125’. I’ve bugged Trevor Rabin about that a few times ;-) The Steve Hoffman AF release of that album is my favourite (and I own the original German target) but the album still sounds so fresh and I’d kill to hear it in surround.

Do you have Mr Wilson’s number? It’s OK, I’m just dreaming aloud…..

  27. What a fabulous opportunity to own these mixes of such a brilliant classic album!! Three cheers Paul! This is an absolute MUST!

Now the REALLY big ask would be ABBA Voyage or The Visitors…… we can but dream….!

  28. To all those people constantly whining about things being either included or excluded: maybe considerPaul’s business as a family run small business. He can only sell what the record companies agree to. I love those special discs included in the FYC and Rick Astley offerings.
Get a life and be grateful that there is a BR audio available at all.

  29. I am not a fan of this group but will order in support of this excellent format. One question. The description includes the following:

“… the only way to enjoy these spatial audio mixes of Hormonally Yours via a physical product…”

What are the ways you can enjoy spatial audio mixes via non-physical products? Do streaming services offer these same mixes? If so, do u know what it takes to listen to a 5.1 mix on a home A/V system, in the car, on your computer or your mobile device? My home system supports Dolby Atmos. My car system supports 5.1. Wondering if it’s now possible to experience 5.1 mixes in other ways besides physical media.

    1. Thanks. Streaming services like Apple Music and Tidal offer Atmos mixes. You can use headphones, stream through compatible soundbars or rig up to your full system with Apple TV.

  30. Incoming S.D.E. news: 5CD S.D.E. Waterboys This Is The Sea. Probably the greatest album of the 80s althoughFishermans Blues runs it close. Sorry, no more details at this time, anyone else?

    1. I’m not a Waterboys connoisseur but I do love “Whole Of The Moon” which I know is on this album & I love that song…I may take the jump though because a friend of mine turned me onto this amazing YouTube channel called The Omaha Introvert, and the girl Hanna has amazing taste…it’s a mindblower of a music channel…she was raving over this album, so through her, I may take the plunge…only if the price is a steal…check out her channel…

  31. Hi, Paul. I have been lucky to get a copy of every SDE release so far – regardless of the genre, they are an automatic buy for me now. Even the Gilbert O Sullivan, which I’m not sure is my thing, but I’m prepared to give it a try – and am looking forward to its imminent arrival. Thank you, Paul – I will order everything you offer, when possible. Keep up the good work!

    1. Same here. I’ve bought all the SDE releases so far, although so far none of them are artists I would ordinarily buy albums from, but I’m a big surround fan. I was especially surprised by how much I enjoyed the xpropoganda album.

  32. Its a shame, as with the forthcoming re-issues, that they are using the original album versions, and not substituting certain songs for the superior remixes, ie I don’t Care and Hello (Turn Your Radio On) single versions are much better and even Are We In Love Yet was remixed and is better. At least they could have been added too.

  33. Just ordered a copy. Can’t wait to hear it. Thanks for keeping this series going. Can’t wait to find out what’s coming next. (All of George Michael’s albums recently appeared in Atmos on the streaming services. Maybe one of those? Or a box set of all of them???).

By the way Paul, we have a discussion thread over on the Quadraphonic Quad forum dedicated to the SDE surround series. Feel free to stop by and say “hi”!

    https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/threads/the-sde-surround-sound-series.31901/

    1. The link in your comment to the excellent Quadphonic Quad discussion site is a great idea.

Paul, lots of potential customers on there who have a history of supporting surround releases, especially purchasing discs which might not be their usual cup of tea in order to support getting future releases. You should check it out!

    2. Thanks for alerting me to that discussion page. Great stuff! I have registered to the forum and when I get approved I will chime in and answer queries/questions as best as I can!

  34. I’m not a huge fan of this band, nor Gilbert O’Sulllivan for that matter, but I have ordered all four of the surround blu-rays so far and will continue to do so, to support the format, the overall concept of high quality surround sound, and this series of releases.

I would love to see a blu-ray surround mix of Talk Talk’s “The Colour Of Spring”.

    1. YES!! And A-Ha’s “Scoundrel Days”, Grace Jones’ “Slave To The Rhythm” (including the Hot Blooded Version of the title track as a bonus). Please, please, please.

    2. Now you’re talking! The surround sound DVD which accompanied the vinyl is very good however and easy to pick up at a reasonable price (as is Spirit Of Eden).

    3. Also a buyer of Atmos mixes not necessarily a fan of either number 3 and 4 in the series.
A Pro, is that it isn’t new material and hopefully it will be the start of older titles forthcoming. (xPropaganda is excellent though)
Con, all British bands nothing from across the pond yet ? Charting is definitely different in the UK and USA
DuttonVocalionTeam has remixed titles to Quad with just a slim offering of actual North American Rock.

  35. I asked the question on another SDE article why is it only the album that gets the surround mix? It would also be great to hear the singles, 7″ remixes, b-sides and especially the 12″ mixes in surround too. Looking at the track listing for the 7cd singles box set for Hormonally Yours the pickings are rich.

  36. Name Marcella Detroit did sound familiar to me. Then i checked from Wikipedia and found out it was the same person who worked with Eric Clapton in the 70’s. What a career she has had as a backing singer and songwriter between 1970-88 with other artist too. The list is almost endless!

    1. I had absolutely no idea that Marcella Detroit and Marcy Levy are one and the same! How many times have I listened to ‘Lay Down Sally’ or ‘The Core’ without knowing the connection with Shakespeares Sister? Thanks, Jarmo, for the info.

  37. Fantastic! Ordered immediately so I don’t miss out this time. Your BD Audios are superb, can’t wait to hear this one.

    Thanks Paul!

  38. I love that u are doing this line of releases! So cool. I didn’t pre-order any of the other releases as I have the original vinyl & the 2x CD version….but this is something different & more unique. Sold! : )

  39. Hi Paul,

Thus far the series has not tempted me just due to music taste / being too late (as always). If one of the new series appeals I will be in like a flash.

Like Stevie B said it would be nice to have some of the background on how you choose the artist/album to select or if you get approached etc..

I think it was a natural progression from SACD to DVD then BD, when BD players have become the standard.

I hope you keep up the good work and try to get more re-issues and new releases coming soon.

P.S. You could sell a separate empty ‘SDE box’ to house them in for £50! Just an idea.

  40. I prefer the piano mix of “Hello (Turn Your Radio On)”. The drums and production always seemed too thick for me. Maybe the surround mixes can give the song some room to breathe?

  41. Wow, now THIS I did not expect…haven’t been able to order any of the versions of HY30 from the SS store yet, and are on my list…so I guess Paul’s BR Audio is the first one I will be acquiring…have the first 2, GOS is surely on its way & now SS in September…love it…it’s great not knowing what future titles will be, could be new albums, could be reissues…keep em coming Paul!! Instant purchase…

  42. Yes!!! Thank you Paul!!! I already pre ordered the other formats but nothing, and I mean nothing beats a Dolby Atos version of any album!! Can’t wait to hear this!! Thank you, thank you and thank you…keep them coming!!

  43. As shopping psychology was a thing discussed in the comments of Paul’s post announcing the HY30 campaign i’d like to tell you what i did after reading todays new posts on SDE.

Let me first state that i’m by no means an expert on the band Shakespears Sister. The only thing i’ve got so far of them in my record collection is the original cd edition of ‘Hormonally Yours’ bought shortly after release in 1992 because i knew and enjoyed the songs ‘Hello’ and ‘Stay’ from listening to the radio back then.

When i first learned about the 30th anniversary campaign for HY via Paul’s post about it i thought: Okay, the Singles box looks nice, but if they included the album WITH 3 additional tracks in this why can’t they also include the dvd that seems exclusive to the new cd/dvd-release.

I then checked the Townsend Music (TM) store to see what other bundles might be available and noticed that there was one including the new releases with ‘Mirror Board’-art and a t-shirt but that included a vinyl lp for which i’ve absolutely no use for.

I also like to listen to music in surround sound if available so the next thing i noticed was that the only surround sound available in the campaign would be the audio of the music videos on the dvd sold only as part of a combination with the rereleased album cd.

Now i learn that Paul has secured the audio surround sound only as an exclusive BRA for SDE.
Kudos for that and congratulations to all SDE-readers based in the UK as they’re offered good value for money with that.

I, based in the EU, have a choice now between this BRA for about 50€ (incl. tracked shipping, German VAT and handling fee, based on my experience of buying both the new TFF album and the xPropaganda one as SDE exclusive BRAs from the SDE shop) or shopping the Singles box plus the cd/dvd release for 83€ (incl. non-tracked shipping, German VAT and TWO copies of an album i bought thirty years ago) or, when adding a t-shirt to that, it’ll cost me 110€.

After thinking this through for some time i ended up with ordering the 2cd ‘Singles Collection’ by Shakespears Sister on German amazon for 15€ (incl. free mp3 via AutoRip and no further cost as i’m a Prime subscriber) and pre-ordering the ‘Holidays In Eden’-SDE by Marillion on jpc.de for 35€ (offering pre-order price guarantee and a BR that not only includes the remixed album in several Hi-res formats but also previously unreleased video content by adding a feature length ‘Making Of’- documentary for the album and a so far commercially unavailable concert recorded by German tv (where it’s aired once in a blue moon usually on a monday morning at around 1 am)…)

When writing this down i’m amazed at my own choice asking myself if too many possibilities to select from but only in not exactly fitting combinations to ones needs will finally be the downfall of physical media…

  44. I have absolutely no idea how many versions of this album I already own, plus the pre-orders for he anniversary editions. And now I will happily be ordering another format, because how could I NOT get this in surround? “Stay” was always my least favorite song on the album (aside from that amazing bridge from Siobhan). So excited to get to hear a new version of an old friend.

  45. Brilliant! Ordered as I am a huge fan of the standalone Blu-Ray audio format and loved this album as a mid-teen. Like others have mentioned well done for championing the format.

      1. I’ve mentioned it previously but I was always disappointed that TFF Seeds album didn’t have a standalone BRA (like the first two). If only someone *wink* with the right channels could make this happen hmm. :)

  46. Having ordered a bundled set off the official store, it seems only right to add this wonderful addition.

Thank you Paul for your dedication and expertise.

    Best wishes to you!

  47. This sounds interesting. Being new to this kind of format and selection of mixes. Would I need a certain type of headphone to also appreciate this?

  48. Wow, what a lovely surprise. Great work on securing this Paul – as someone else has commented would love to hear about the process you go through to obtain these. Keep them coming!

  49. Im so looking forward to the Gilbert O’ Sullivan Blu Ray Audio… the Tears for Fears and xPropaganda BRA’s were amazing… and now this! So thrilled you’ve managed to secure this release.

Hope sometime in the future you write a feature on the ins and outs of how these issues come about (Do you get a list of future Atmos streaming releases and work from that or do you go to the record companies and ask for specific recordings to be 5.1-ed etc)

    Bronski Beat
    Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Roxy Music would all be on my wish list for future releases.

    Cheers :)

  50. Wow ! Great choice ! I’m sure this will be popular ! Insert comments in 1 weeks time….. I didn’t know anything about this …it’s unfair

  51. In like Flynn. You’ve pulled a blinder getting this one and a musically very deserving choice for ‘the treatment’ – nice one, Paul, and thanks!

  52. Surprising selection. That is the great thing about this surround series, it becomes a wide selection of genres. ordered :)
