The Beach Boys / “Made in California” box set: details and track listing
Made In California The Beach Boys’ box set originally planned for last autumn as part of the band’s 50th anniversary celebrations, will be released on 19 August 2013.
This six-CD set attempts to provide a career overview, and in addition to well known recordings and ‘deep cuts’, it will include more than 60 previously unreleased tracks. In total, Made In California will provide over seven and a half hours of music and features 174 tracks.
Highlights include a true stereo mix of Do It Again, made from the recently found 8-track master, a new stereo mix of We’re Together Again (again from a recently recovered 8-track master) and a live Help Me Rhonda with Dennis on the lead vocal.
CD 6 in this set is called From The Vaults and it is on this disc that many of the rare tracks reside, including instrumentals, a capella mixes, demos, mono cuts and radio spots.
Made in California will come packaged in a large hardback book full of personal recollections from the band’s members, replicated classic artwork and memorabilia, photos from the band’s archive.

I read a lot of interesting posts here. Probably you spend a
lot of time writing, i know how to save you a lot of work,
there is an online tool that creates high quality, google

I am very happy with the “bonus tracks” & unreleased tracks, although most of them are out there from previous compilations. NO “Summer In Paradise” bonus tracks ? It’s like this album never existed. Yes it was a poor seller, but I think it’s the best CD they released since Sunflower in 1970. So now, The Beach Boys have been done to death…what’s left ? The Brian Wilson Box set !! Andy Paley sessions, Dr. Eugene Landy sessions, Sweet Insanity sessions, there is a hell of a lot of Brian Wilson Solo stuff to make a 5 CD box set on him….where is it? I think it should be done while he is alive !!!
To the sets already mentioned you can add Endless Memories.
Otherwise, I feel wise in having invested in the past in some Unsurpassed Master series boxed sets.
Its hard being a Beach Boys fan as this boxed set proves. At £100 its way overpriced. As a previous commentator has said a lot of the unreleased tracks are just tweaks and non essential. I cannot understand why Capitol just cant get things right when it comes to re-issuing Beach Boys material.
Almost every album compilation now has one or two “previously unreleased” tracks on it or as in the latest live double, a shortage of running time. I think “Good Vibrations” “Pet Sounds” and “Smile” are the only boxed sets any true Beach Boys fan really needs
I have to admit, I’m only excited about a handful of these songs. I have the majority of these songs many times over. As a Brian Wilson fan I’d love to have this, but I can’t see paying that much for it. Instead of this, I wish they’d released the next singles collection as the last one stopped just prior to Pet Sounds.
I believe I had unrealistic expectations due to the quality of the Smile Sessions box.
In my mind after the mono/stereo editions that Capitol released last year, I envisioned the Genesis boxsets or the upcoming Nilsson set. We would get the remastered stereo and mono versions of all the albums for a given period and then a disc or two of related outtakes.
Of course this still is a great set and I will probably get it for the Christmas
£100!!! Compare to the 17 disc Nilsson set @ around £50.
While I’m glad to see the set the “60 unreleased tracks” is misleading since most are released tracks that have been tweaked (now in stereo, etc.). The set also missed the opportunity for a dvd/blu ray. I really like the Hawthorne set from around 2000. Lots of unreleased tracks at a decent price. The Beach Boys marketing team has missed a couple easy shots lately. The 50th Anniversary/Celebration dvd/blu ray was short (excluded a lot of the show) and from what I remember doesn’t even have menu to pick a particular song.
My feeling on this is that it’s very comprehensive, but (like all things Beach Boys) overall misses a trick or two; my biggest complaint is the fifth disc; as patchy as the post-70s albums are, the disc feels like an apology for three decades’ work; five songs taken from five albums (one of which isn’t represented at all) plus a few rarities and outtakes isn’t enough. You could easily compile a full disc of great songs from the deeper cuts on those albums – I wouldn’t turn my nose up at Santa Ana Winds, Where I Belong, Somewhere Near Japan, Strange Things Happen or the final trilogy on the last album being on there.
My other minor gripe is that the Ricky/Blondie albums have received short shrift. Current Beach Boys bios tend to write them out of the history, but they delivered enough interesting material to hold their own and it would’ve been great to see them represented with one of their songs and some further tracks from Holland and Carl & The Passions. Likewise, this box set would’ve been a suitable place to put the Holland reject We Got Love, or the Dennis/Blondie outtake Carry Me Home.
But I’m nitpicking. I am very very excited about this and can’t wait to hear the unreleased tracks and new mixes.
