Paul Sinclair chats about the Dylan blu-ray

  1. Very well said Paul. This is great publicity not only for the Blu-ray release program but for SDE as a whole. It looks like your hard work is starting to pay off.
Not sure of the numbers who listen to Dylan FM but here’s hoping you get a bucket full of orders… and then some.
Thanks again for your dedication and making this wonderful site a pleasure to visit everyday.
    Cheers
    Roel

  2. Great listen, Paul, thanks.

Also today, I heard Giles Martin talking about the demixing process developed by Peter Jackson’s team for the Get Back project, and how it applied to the Revolver deluxe set. And that made me think of those albums that supposedly could never be converted to surround, and how that limitation could now magically be removed. XTC’s Mummer jumps to mind, since the multi-tracks are missing, they say. But then why not Louis Armstrong or Howlin’ Wolf? I suppose you can make a list for a week.

Any dream projects from that category? But I suppose if you say what they are, some people will see that as a confirmation those titles are on the way.

    1. Thanks! Yes, in theory demixing could work on master stereo mixes, although remember that they still had the multi-tracks for Revolver, it’s just that tracks had been ‘bounced down’ onto one. So you had 3 or 4 elements on one track. Demixing those is still much simpler separating out 16 or 32 channels from a finished stereo master.

      1. Oh, sure, that’s true. Cracking open Revolver was like working with stems, I suppose. And something like Mummer would be a challenge, no doubt. But some of the ‘fundamentally-made’ r&b, rock, and blues records of the 40s, 50s and 60s would only have vocal and three or four instruments to parse. So, not much different from the circumstances where the Beatles had one guitar, bass, and Ringo’s kit all on the same track.

If nothing else, demixing tech gives some hope back for artists and labels were hoping to properly revitalize the huge trove of essential music lost in the Universal fire of ’08.

Finally, AI that has some kind of morally acceptable use.

  3. Nice interview, Paul. Good idea to take pre-orders for a limited edition pressing, instead of setting an arbitrary number of discs to produce before truly knowing the prospective market.

Any chance that you (Paul) will host your own podcast someday? Something beyond the unboxing videos? (Apologies if you are doing this already.)

I think each of your SDE exclusive releases is worthy of a podcast episode. I’m sure each album has plenty of stories worth sharing.

  4. Great interview Paul!

It was wonderful to hear you articulate to the podmaster Craig Danuloff what SDE is all about and what your goals are moving forward.
Throughout the past I’ve put my money where my mouth is, that is, I’ve bought BluRay audio discs by artists I don’t particularly care for……all for the sake of supporting the medium.

Thank you again for getting the attention of those able to make this happen, and actually making it happen!

  5. Hi paul can you order more than 1 copy?..I’ve already ordered it but want to surprise my brother with another copy and if so how do I add it to my order?

  6. What a great interview! So exciting to see how far Paul and SDE has come. I love that you are encouraging folks who only have a 5.1 setup to take the plunge anyway – Atmos folds down wonderfully in my setup. Can’t wait to hear this Paul – congrats again.

  7. Thanks Paul for detailing some of the background to this release and the advantages and enhancements to the recent Dylan SDE edition.

I am am thoroughly looking forward to this release, and the Concert For George blu-ray that I have also ordered. I only have 5.1 at present but am sure this will enhance my enjoyment of both of these releases.

You should take a bow for striking out and making what appear to be very good relationships with record companies to achieve this and I hope that this will continue. You have certainly aimed high and hit the target so perhaps other high profile projects will follow. You will be aware of at least one that a lot of people will thank you for. And even if that does not come to fruition, perhaps it will inspire movement elsewhere!

Thank you once again for a very informative and well structured discussion, and good luck with this and future projects. Keep up the good work, it’s appreciated.

  8. Wish I knew more about this format, don’t have any of the series, however, like Chris says, superb price given the cost of living issues we all face. Good stuff Paulie!

  9. Well done Paul. I think, after listening to that and taking in the non-Dylan specific points. It basically says there is no one ordering system that will make everyone happy so you have to find a best fit for yourself and the SDE system (i.e. just you with everything else you have to do as well.)

This system is the best, I think, as there is less that can go wrong and far fewer excuses available. The only valid excuse (kind of) is I didn’t see it in time. Well, you would have also missed it if Paul was still working on a single, fixed amount issue. The only way to genuinely make sure that everyone gets one is to make so many that you never run out and have to bear the cost of overstocks yourself. Which would be mighty altruistic of you, but also suicidal as far as SDE is concerned.

So, as far as I am concerned anyway, you can rest easy that you are making a great product available at a very reasonable price, considering desirability, in a way that means as many people who want one can get one.

    Nice work all round.
