Mike Oldfield / Tubular Bells 50th anniversary SDE-exclusive blu-ray
2LP vinyl and CD sets also available
2LP vinyl and CD also available • Quick pre-order link
Mike Oldfield’s seminal 1973 album Tubular Bells is being reissued for its 50th anniversary and amongst the formats is an SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio which features a brand new immersive Dolby Atmos Mix along with other rare spatial audio versions, a new stereo mix and an unreleased demo of a planned – but scrapped – Tubular Bells 4, which was made five years ago!
Back in 1973, the largely unknown 20-year-old Mike Oldfield released his debut album, the first release on brand-new label, Virgin Records. Tubular Bells became a phenomenon, topping the UK charts, winning a Grammy and it was famously featured in William’s Friedkin’s film The Exorcist, which itself became a global sensation in ’73.
This 50th Anniversary celebration of Tubular Bells, overseen by Mike Oldfield, is available on SDE-exclusive blu-ray, 2LP half-speed mastered vinyl and on CD.
The Tubular Bells SDE-exclusive blu-ray is packed with content and features the following audio streams:
- Tubular Bells – 2023 David Kosten Dolby Atmos Mix*
- Tubular Bells – 2009 Mike Oldfield 5.1 Surround Mix
- Tubular Bells – 1975 Quad Mix
- Tubular Bells Intro Edit – 2023 David Kosten Dolby Atmos Mix*
- Tubular Bells – 2023 David Kosten Stereo Mix (48/24)*
- Tubular Bells – 1973 Original Stereo Mix (96/24)
- Tubular Bells Intro Edit – 2023 David Kosten Stereo Mix (48/24)*
- Tubular Bells 4 Intro – Demo (48/24)
*Only available physically on this product
The Dolby Atmos Mix has been created by producer David Kosten (who’s worked with the likes of Steven Wilson and Bat For Lashes) and he had the challenge of trying to recreate Oldfield’s original 1973 mix in immersive audio, going back to the original multi-track stems which feature almost none of the processing you hear on the final mixes – the levels, echoes, reverbs, radical tone shifts, panning etc. Kosten also created a new stereo mix and the blu-ray also includes a new edit of the classic Tubular Bells intro which is also in stereo and Atmos. All four versions are only available physically via this SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio!
Additionally, Mike Oldfield’s 5.1 Surround Mix from 2009 is also included. That was only ever issued on DVD at the time, so it sees its debut here on Blu-ray as lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1.
The four-channel Quad Mix was mixed by Phil Newell in 1975 and was issued on 2001 on SACD. It has some differences to the original stereo and 5.1 mixes, most notable the Viv Stanshall voiceover on ‘Sailor’s Hornpipe’ at the end It has been unavailable since that time but is the third different spatial audio mix on this Blu-ray.
The original stereo mix on the Blu-ray is as used on the new half-speed mastered vinyl and of course fans will be very interested in the Tubular Bells 4 demo. The story is, Mike Oldfield retired from releasing music in 2018, after giving up touring many years previously. In the months after his last album, Return To Ommadawn in 2017, Oldfield toyed with going the whole way and making a fourth and final instalment of Tubular Bells in time for its 50th anniversary. Work began in earnest, and Mike felt he had finally cracked the secret of being able to successfully return to and rework the opening motif. An eight-minute taster was sent to his A&R team. And then, nothing. Mike decided against continuing. Five years later, this final paragraph of the Tubular Bells story is being released as part of the 50th anniversary celebration. It may well be the last thing ever recorded by Oldfield and this is stereo-only.
This Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells Blu-ray Audio is #10 in the ongoing SDE Surround Series and will be packaged similarly to previous editions and ships with a free, collectible SDE Surround Series slipcase.
Here’s the now traditional reminder as to why this product is highly recommended:
- It’s the only way to enjoy the Dolby Atmos mix (and the new stereo mix) of the album via a physical product
- You don’t need to sign-up to a streaming service such as Tidal or Apple Music to hear the spatial audio mix
- The Atmos Mix on the Blu-ray is not compressed due to streaming bandwidth restrictions
- You own the product, you are not renting it from a digital service provider
- The Blu-ray audio is an excellent format for music and you don’t want to see it die off
- Supporting SDE with these initiatives leads to similar collaborations with labels/artists and we are keen to bring your more in the near future!
The 50th anniversary 2LP half-speed mastered vinyl includes the original stereo mix on the first record and a series of bonus tracks on LP 2. These are Tubular Bells 4 Intro – Demo,Tubular Bells/In Dulci Jubilo from the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, Tubular X (first time on vinyl for this 1998 X-Files inspired version), a Mike Oldfield & YORK remix of Tubular Bells and ‘Mike Oldfield’s Single (Theme From Tubular Bells)’.
The 50th anniversary CD version has the same content as the 2LP set but without ‘Tubular X’ and ‘Mike Oldfield’s Single (Theme From Tubular Bells)’.
The SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio of Tubular Bells is a limited edition item. It will be pressed based on demand and due to the short lead time to manufacture, it will be available to pre-order for 10 days only. Availability after that cannot be guaranteed, so secure your copy today by pre-ordering at the SDE shop, either directly via this link or using the special SDE shop buy button (‘add to cart’) below. We ship worldwide (the tracked service to USA for blu-ray is £8, for example) and the CD and vinyl editions are also available individually or via a specially-priced bundles.
Tubular Bells 50th anniversary Blu-ray Audio and the CD and 2LP vinyl formats will be released on 26 May 2023, via UMR/EMI.
TECHNICAL NOTES: This blu-ray audio requires a blu-ray player. Decoding the Dolby Atmos mix requires a Dolby Atmos-certified soundbar or a Dolby Atmos-compatible AV Receiver/Amp. The Dolby Atmos mix will ‘fold down’ to 5.1 or stereo if a Dolby Atmos decoder is not detected.
EU SHIPPING NOTES: If you are ordering from the EU please be aware that that goods may be subject to import VAT when they arrive from the UK. The prices the SDE shop charge you do not include VAT

I had missed the boat on this release due to me already owning the 2009 Deluxe Edition. A decision I later regretted. I noticed the scalpers on fleabay were in full force but held off (some wanted £100-£150). Ridiculous prices. Also I did the same with the 2 Tears For Fears releases. I then saw that there was a copy available on this site and I snapped it up after looking for ages hoping one would magically appear after it had sold out. Wow is all I can say. I only have a small 5.2.2 Atmos system (5.1 plus 2 heights above and to the side of the listening position pointing down – unable to use ceiling speakers) and the separation is so different to the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. I did get the 2 Tears for Fears Atmos Blu Rays eventually of previously mentioned auction site, slightly scalped (around £30 each so not too bad).
Now I get the emails from Paul and I can’t fault the quality service I have received.
I have since made a few more purchases and hopefully now I receive emails about new releases I won’t get an itchy finger again. And no more scalper prices!
Here’s hoping for more of Mike’s music getting the Atmos treatment. Also Tears For Fears too although I do own the 2014 DVD-A version of Songs from the Big Chair and the Sowing the Seeds of Love Blu Ray box set.
This one was super. I really do hope that in 2024 Hergest ridge will follow and in 2025 Ommadawn
The hidden gem is 2017 Tubular Bells 4 Intro – Demo. Outstanding. Starts off quite similar to the original but then becomes something quite different. Well worth perservering with!
Although I have this on CD (a HDCD, actually) as well as the Quad SACD, replacing my original vinyl from -73, this was a no brainer, despite the customs fee and VAT, and I must say it sounds absolutely amazing. I have a regular 5.1 setup so my receiver folds down Atmos to regular 5.1, and let me tell you, this baby really makes my speakers sparkle.
It is a testament to the quality of the musicians and recording engineers back in -73 that it still sounds so good today, crystal clear, a really fantastic recording quality.
And the new Atmos mix makes it sound like you are hearing it for the very first time.
Truly awesome, thank you Paul!
I have to say, i stopped within the ordering process of the BD. 23 GPB for the disc – fine/ok, 8 GBP for shipment – hmm, toll+handling outside Britain – grrr. The total cost would make ~50 EUR. I’ve paid for the first edition CD, 76 quad Boxed, 25th aniv., HDCD, SACD and the 2009 boxed set, yet. So, this time … no, thank you. (But, indeed, thank you for creating this release!)
On the other hand there is a digital download of the stereo part (my only interest) widely available, but with different technical spec (24/44.1 in contrast to 24/48, 24/96). Whether we might notice/hear any difference or not, you have the better specs. Any chance that you will provide your own hi res version of the album as download? Thank you!
Thanks Paul for another superb release, the Quad mix in particular is a nice surprise, as it sounds much better to my ears than the original SACD. For some reason the SACD mastering didn’t have quite the same quality of separation of instruments as this one does. Even taking into account having to shell out €13 extra (painful), it’s still worth it. In relation to the perceived bass synch issue on Part 2, I personally hear it on the Atmos mix, but it’s there in the 2023 stereo mix.
What surprised me about the packaging for this one was that there’s no mention of “Blu-Ray” and no Blu-Ray logo anywhere on the disc, in the booklet or on the cover – just on the generic plastic case and on the SDE slipcase.
hello paul Do you think that in the future you will re-edit the Superdeluxe edition of the 50th anniversary of Tubular bells, it is that at the time I was not very attentive thinking that it could always be obtained and I ran out of Blue Ray :(
Hi Paul and everyone at SDE!
Just to say that I’ve just received the Blu-Ray and I’m very glad with it!
During the last months I was reluctant to order records or books from UK (to France) because of taxes due to Brexit, but it was hard to pass for this gem. But, because there’s a but, this time I was struck by the amount of this said tax: 16 euros (about £13,72), or to put it simply, almost 60% of the price of the product… purely insane!
I don’t blame you of course (who would, anyway), but I think I’m definitely done with orders on UK shops. Unless you could create a SDE Branch in EU to get around Brexit taxes!!!!
Anyway, thank you very much for your great job, I wish you all the best!
At that price I’d order it to a UK postbox and take a day trip across the channel rather than paying that tax.
Hi Paul & SDE Team.
I just received the Blu Ray + CD bundle. Congratulations for the work done on the blu ray: presentation of the product, booklet, menus, etc. I would also like to thank you for the extreme care you have taken with the shipping, and the speed. Absolute perfection.
“Mistake in BagPipes Guitar Excerpt in 2023 MIX????”
But I also wanted to tell you that there seems to be a mistake in the David Kosten’s 2023 mix (Both in the Dolby Atmos and the Stereo mix). In the “BagPipes Guitar” part of Tubular Bells part 2 (aprox. between minutes 9 and 11) the sound of the bass and timpani is confusing and not in time: the bass seems to be one or two beats ahead. It looks like the track is duplicated and badly synchronised in the final mix.
I would like to kindly request an explanation from Universal or David Kosten, as to whether this was a mistake or whether it was Mr Kosten’s decision. And if so, what was his explanation?
Otherwise, thank you very much for your work, and I look forward to reading from you.
Regards
Fran
Thanks Fran. Can’t really comment on your other point.
Hmm, was strongly considering snatching up this when it becomes available, but if there’s a production error I’m not so sure anymore. Do you have the means of contacting the label/whoever you got the files from and ask about it?
There isn’t a production error. Rebuilding Tubular Bells from scratch is a ridiculously difficult task. I think David Kosten has done an incredible job and it’s a mixture of technical and creative endeavour.
I second your analyse, Fran.
There obviously is a problem in the Pre-Caveman part.
Either these are instruments which were not as loud in the 1973 mix, either this is a problem with the synchronisation of these tracks in this 2023 mix.
I can upload a comparison between both mixes if you want.
Hi Paul et al,
Gutted to have missed this chance to own this.
I was 14 when this was released, and bought the cassette tape soon after, and it has without doubt, remained one of my all-time favourites for these past 50 years.
It’s even been a ringtone on my mobile for as long as you could put your own tune as a ringtone. Which has been some years.
And even to this day, when my mobile rings, anyone nearby turns to listen.
And they always know the music.
Which is sometimes a bit of fun, as when I’m listening to the album, my wife usually says, “your mobile is ringing”, then realises it’s the album.
There’s a few of the SDE’s on eBay (and no doubt other sites), but I’m guessing that there’s a premium to be paid.
How much were copies being sold for here? Just weighing up on how much of a premium I might have to pay.
BUT, as this was a limited run, I may have to bite the bullet and buy from eBay. Not happy that someone profiteers from my missed opportunity.
But it is what it is.
Keep up the great work.
Regards
Tubular Bells was £23 on blu-ray. Later this week they’ll be a small quantity re-available. Follow SDE and the SDE shop on twitter and facebook to stay in touch…
Many thanks Paul, will do.
My work productivity has declined last week and this as I constantly monitor the various SDE platforms in the hope that I can purchase a cancellation/contingency copy of this (my fault I didn’t do it during the opening window). It’s beginning to look like I won’t get any work done next week either ;)
I didnt think I missed it, was waiting for an email saying it had shipped but it turns out I never actually ordered the bloody thing. I have no record of making the order, no receipt, no emails. That’s some weird dreams I’ve had.
Thoroughly enjoying this release. Thanks, Paul – as Mark Yon and others have said, finding new stuff to discover.
Geek Warning Ahead; Thought you might like to know that the 1975 Quad mix on this Blu-ray has the front L & R channels swapped as compared to the 2001 Virgin SACD release, I used to listen to that SACD a lot back in the day, although not for a number of years – something must have stuck!
I thought there was something unusual with the quad as well
Thank you, thank you, Paul! After I-don’t-know-how-many different copies of this album I have over the years (at least 7!), from vinyl to Bluray, I have spent the evening listening to one of my favourite albums of all time in Dolby Atmos. Didn’t think I would hear anything new after all this time but I was wrong… it is a fantastic mix for a 50-year old album. The clarity of the individual instruments, the little sounds I don’t remember hearing before, the loudness of the rocky parts, the moments of sublime serenity…. you’ve made me very happy. Even the stereo of Tubular Bells 4 sounds great through a surround sound amp! Thanks to all concerned in bring this to fruition.
Thank you Mark!
Mine arrived today. I wasn’t sure if the Atmos mix would be a huge improvement on the 2009 mix. I was wrong. It’s fantastic. I’m hearing things I’ve never heard before. Great job
Hi Paul. Great job. How many copies were finally made of Tubular Bells BluRay?
Thanks. 5,000.
Hi Paul, just received Tubular Bells, and it sounds as awesome as Dylans Time out of Mind, what a great series this is , I hope to dip my toe in the water for more, also thank you for the magnificent work you do running your site theres nothing else like it, all the best
Thank you very much :)
Why have the mixes list on the Blu-ray been replaced with the Suede listing?
Don’t know but it’s been fixed.
Would love to see Tubular Bells 2 given the same treatment
Oh, I’d be here in spades for that. Particularly if they had the Edinburgh Live mix available officially. I was there that night and the very thought of Tattoo live brings the hairs on my neck up.
The Multitracks of Mike Oldfield during his time with Warner are officially lost. :'(
Noooooooo !
As well as the new atmos mix I’m so looking forward to hearing the 1975 quad mix for the first time. I have the previous 5.1 mix but it’ll be great to have it in a lossless format. I’m so very impressed that you’ve managed to secure all previous spacial audio mixes for this release. Really pleased to hear it’s sold out too, confirming that there is clearly still a demand for a physical release such as this. Cannot wait for this to drop through my letterbox
Dear Paul Sinclair, do you know if the LP is mastered from an analog source? I guess the 2023 mix is all digital, right? I am ready to enjoy all the options on the Blu-ray. Thank you
If there are cancellations, I missed this and would also really like a copy. I can’t believe it’s 50 years since I first heard this in the music room at school and my mum then bought me a copy a few days later!
You need to add yourself to the ‘waiting list’ by clicking the ‘Notify Me If You Get Some More’ button on the product page > https://www.thesdeshop.com/collections/spatial-audio/products/mike-oldfield-tubular-bells-50th-anniversary-limited-edition-sde-exclusive-blu-ray-audio
Sad that I missed the chance to pre-order the blu ray. Will there be any more copies available upon release?
Likewise, I really want this Atmos mix and would rather not pay a scalper.
This will only happen if we get some cancellations…
If there are any cancellations, when will these no longer wanted copies be up for sale?
With all the space on a Blu-ray, where’s Mike Oldfield’s Single? Further, are they re-releasing the ghastly remixed version or the original?
I’m sure SDE would have included Mike Oldfield’s Single, but Universal wanted that as a vinyl / digital / streaming exclusive. It’s the superior original version BTW :-)
Just a note to Paul Sinclair, some avaricious git has a copy of the blu ray listed on Ebay for £69.99 plus postage.
id. is Sconemegamix & listed as from Newtonabbey.
Don’t know if there are rules about such pratices, but the ethics stink!
Another one up now, also £69.99 [Delivery by 17th April!] – unfortunately don’t know what can be done about these scalpers. Just sucks…
Well, I’ve just seen that a copy in Discogs was sold by £ 74
Just wanted to say “hi” and meld under a release, that finally drawn me in – from being only silent reader (but now for years!) to SD shopper.
Funnily enough, I’m no big Oldfield freak, more strangely I’m even not much into his style of playing. I still do like selections of his music and his imaginative writing. I don’t have a slightest problem with recognising “TB” as a milestone in the history of music. Thought that if I have only old worn out 1973 vinyl bought for nothing from careless auctioner, then this is somethnig comprehensive to put it in my collection – and as a proud milestone of it. Dunno yet ‘xactly how I’m gonna upgrade my living room audio setup to be able to play it, but… I accepted the challenge after clicking “ordered”.
Thanks again to Paul – for such a fine choice on item for series SDE #10 – looking forawrd to getting it in two months or so. Martin
Thank you Martin:)
Any chance for Depeche Mode ‘Memento Mori’ sde blu-ray?
Or Caroline Polachek and upcoming Alison Goldfrapp album?
Kate Bush ‘Hounds of Love’, ‘Never for Ever’, ‘The Dreaming’, ‘The Kick Inside’.
I would love ‘Hounds of Love’, but it’s worth remembering that it’s not Paul’s choice not to release it in surround, it’s Kate’s. I would love for her to do it, but I doubt she will.
Another “SDE Surround Series” slipcase (No. 10) was the “clincher” for me.
Ha!
Seriously, tho’, this offering is PACKED with “advanced” and “lossless” resolution mixes, especially “SURROUND” (a.k.a. “Spatial Audio”) mixes.
This HFPA Blu-ray contains:
“Tubular Bells” – 2023 David Kosten Dolby Atmos Mix*
“Tubular Bells” – 2009 Mike Oldfield 5.1 Surround Mix
“Tubular Bells” – 1975 Quad Mix
“Tubular Bells” Intro Edit – 2023 David Kosten Dolby Atmos Mix*
“Tubular Bells” – 2023 David Kosten Stereo Mix (48/24)*
“Tubular Bells” – 1973 Original Stereo Mix (96/24)
“Tubular Bells” Intro Edit – 2023 David Kosten Stereo Mix (48/24)*
“Tubular Bells 4” Intro – Demo (48/24)
*Only available physically on this product
This is an ABSOLUTE “no-brainer,” Blu-ray Music purchase for me – all for £23!
Kudos, Paul!
Ordered! One of my lifetime favorite! Thanks Paul!
So I ordered it, I have the 2009 version, I am very curious if the Blu-Ray 5.1 version will add something to it, the Atmos for sure will.
Sorry but I still can’t believe Mike Oldfield have stopped doing music since 5 years…
Did he give any interview since then ?
Is he still alive ?
And why still no deluxe edition of the sublime Amarok ?
As I wasn’t even born when the first Tubular Bells album came out, Tubular Bells II was my first real taste of Mike Oldfield. After purchasing that I went back to the first and loved it, followed by many other Mike Oldfield albums. I couldn’t hand over my money for the pre-order quick enough when I saw this! Looking forward to having the vinyl & blu ray bundle in my hands.
Thanks Paul!
Recommend Book of Love’s 1988 cover of ‘Tubular Bells’ if you haven’t heard it. ‘Tubular Bells’/’Pretty Boys And Pretty Girls’ (Regan’s House Medley) from the single is really good as well.
I own the quad SACD and the 5.1 DVD from 2009, but this is a must buy from my favorite year for progressive rock, 1973. Ordered! Thanks Paul for making this release happen, your efforts are greatly appreciated! Does anyone know why there were two different ‘70s quad mixes made back in the day? Which one is on the SACD and which one is on this blu-ray?
The one on the blu-ray is the same as the one on the SACD, I know that much!
But better quality IMO Paul :-) I’m not sure which one of the Quad mixes it is (either the SQ or CD-4 version), but it’s the one without the model aeroplane noise at the end, and the same one used on the SACD as Paul said, and the Boxed set.
The quad mix on this disc is Phil Newell’s true quad mix originally included in the Boxed box set and later on the SACD release which ends with the extended version of the Sailor’s Hornpipe.
The other “quad” mix that was released on a stand-alone LP prior to the Boxed set was done by Mike but that was a phased stereo fake quad which ends with the sound of Mike’s model plane flying around the room.
Appreciate the detailed response, thank you!
I dated a girl and took her to see the Exorcist (73) and it was definitely a way to scare everyone especially Catholics which we were, haven’t watched that movie again since……Ha….
Great soundtrack with a mesmerizing in your face effect that sounds great in Quad and everytime I heard it on the radio I thought of that damn movie.
I’m still fully invested in the SDE Surround Series Blu-Ray Audio Dolby Atmos Disc’s, ordered fairly soon after notification received.
Now like with TYA ASIT, I have a previous disc that I need to unload, since this is reported to have the Original Quad mix I won’t need the 2001 Sacd anymore.
Still trying to reduce the size of my surround music library numbering over 200 at the moment duplicates go first but Paul’s making the task difficult for sure with these Gems.
I’m going 2 steps forward and 1 step back when I need it reversed to get my library below 125 titles again….
I upgrade titles whenever possible with impetus on Original Quads over 5.1 mixes (and of course any Atmos mix on Blu-Ray).
Just frustrating that this series didn’t happen many years sooner but beggars can’t be choosers……cheers Paul.
My wife grew up Catholic and was warned not to watch the film as a kid (and Life of Brian) so in 1998 (at 35yrs old) she plucked up the courage to watch The Exorcist with me. She’s not a great fan of horror or any films really, but fair play she sat through it and mostly hated the experience. Before we went to bed I set Tubular Bells up on the CD player behind the curtains, I left it for about 20 – 30 minutes to give her chance to start drifting off, the room was dark and the 15/8 time signature kicked in. I have to say that scared her more than the film and she still brings it up to this day when the argument “Why are you such an arsehole?” needs revisiting.
I like your style!
Ha that’s a great way to rouse someone from slumber, still a fan of horror movies but not slasher flicks or anything having to do with an anti-christ or Demons, even though I’m far removed from those restrictive Catholic years.
I’ve seen some things in my 60+ years that make me keep an open mind and a cautious one.
A no-brainer really. A family member has ordered it for MY 50th birthday…. ‘73, wot a great year…lol
Well, a very difficult time financially for me and the hole family at present… but ofter much deliberation and a thumbs up from the wife, ordered …. So pleased ….. Possibly the best thing I’ve ordered for years. Thank you so much Paul.
As much as Mike Oldfield embraced surround sound for his music, I think he reissued them as dolby digital 5.1 so there is room to try and upgrade all his releases to blu-ray.
Hi, I was just about to pre-order the Tears for Fears bluray but at the end, I was afraid of import fees …
For this release same question … I am just curious to ask if someone here have ever ordered to France and how much is the final cost with import fees ? Thank you by advance. (Sorry for my english, I hope I’ve been understandable)
Actually the french import fees are 9€ if paid via laposte website for an order from SDE Shop. You should receive an email about it when the parcel is ready for distribution.
My last SDE Blu-Ray (TFF The Hurting) was £23, postage was £8, total £31 ~ 37€.
Grand total with import fees 46€.
Remember that with these blu-rays: you can hold music in your hands, you own a limited item and you support this website :)
Manu
Thank you very much Manu for these very precise details. It’s actually around the amount I expected. 45-50€ all included. It is indeed expensive but once in a while for an exceptional and limited article anyway, I will not say no next time, I will try the experience.
Jeez, Paul, you’re bleedin’ me dry over here! ;) Great stuff! This keeps getting better an better! Now, I heard that Kate Bush plans to re-release Hounds Of Love again. In a special presentation … would this not be at least one of the ultimate crown jewels for the SDE Surround Series?
And she loves to go independent these days … just sayin’ ;)
I wish there would be a way around the import duties and this rediculous 6 Euro handling fee by DHL. But even with those fees, the price ammounts roughly to what I would have to pay for an SACD by Analogue Productions. So … Keep ’em coming, I guess.
Consider yourself lucky, Bpost charges 17,5 euro handling fee.
I don’t think they charge that much for handling only. This should already include 21% Belgian VAT.
Ordered blu-ray / cd.
OMD – Dazzle Ships and other early omd albums would be nice!
I’ve been waiting for the announcement of a Wham box set all day. :-)
This series is turning into something historical. Well played. Someday I will be able to play them appropriately.
Paul you are fast becoming a legendary source for these great releases; I’m praying you can get to release The Beatles Revolver on Blu-ray once the streaming exclusive runs out!
Never preordered anything this fast! Feel free to add any and all subsequent Mike Oldfield albums in the safe knowledge that you will have at least one preorder :-)
Make that two preorders :-) Thank you very much for this, Paul!
Yes, ordered. Thanks Paul, keep them coming.
Ordered too. I usually like quad mixes a lot (like Pink Floyd’s ‘Wish You Were Here’, The Doobie Brothers’ ‘Quadio’ or Deep purple’s ‘Machine Head’), with more discrete channels than on 5.1 mixes (to my taste). This one sounds promising!
Thank you Paul for this SDE exclusive! Hope this is not an April’s fool!!
Ordered.
By far the most impressive Bluray in this SDE collection so far !!
Great Job, Paul !!!
Another 1000% no brainer. Ordered two as my neighbor wanted one too. Thanks for these amazing exclusives!!! I already have this in 5.1 but Atmos will be a step up. Amazing album, can’t recommend it enough!
Done. I always knew 2023 was going to cost me a fortune. Damn you, 1973 *shakes fist*
We had fifty years to save up, but still have to raise the mortgage on the house (looking at you, Rush & Pink Floyd)! :-) Still, hard to complain with so many classic albums celebrating their anniversaries at the same time as the technology to make them sound as good as they are probably ever going to sound is available. At least musically, these are good times!
Please if possible bring us a blu ray audio exclusive from Dead or alive or Kim Wilde. Both are underrated artists. Hearing their material on hi res special audio with their respective bonus and demo tracks would be a dream come true.
That would be interesting…either DOA or KW, big fan of both…
Ordered, many thanks. Tubular Bells II is my personal favourite (it was the one I got into first) but love a lot of his stuff (Return To Ommadawn was stunning), and looking forward to hearing this on Blu-Ray. One question, which I think is answered above : the vinyl bonus tracks are not included on the Blu-Ray – is that correct?
The tracklistings are exactly as written in this post.
Amazing release.
Although I own the SACD version, this Blu Ray was an absolute must have!
Ordered!
Ordered of course , think I’m now trapped in the system :-) one of the few who has all releases so far.
I am surprised at this being released and still so popular, thankfully this like the TYA disc seems to be all things to every one.
Congratulations Paul and long may it last
Ordered the blu ray along with an xPropaganda slip cover. Not a massive fan of Tubular Bells but it’s one of those all time classic albums that I don’t have yet. This series just gets better and better. Really looking forward to future releases. Thank you very much Paul.
Bought the bundle vinyl + Blu ray edition. Hopefully, all the orders arrive at the same time, is it possible Paul? Thanks
Items are usually shipped in the same package from my experience
I guess asking whether this one + The Hurting blu-ray disc (released two weeks earlier) could be shipped together in one is futile, right? It’s just such a drag because DHL slaps that €6 fee on every separate package.
I second that…for saving costs on the SDE end…honestly, I don’t mind getting 2 packages tho…
Paul I see you are advertising the Tears for Fears slipcase separately at no cost. I’m confused. When I ordered The Hurting blu ray it was advertised as coming with its slipcase so I don’t need to order this separately. And anyone who didn’t order the blu ray why would they order a slipcase for a product they won’t have?
The Hurting comes with a slipcase. The Tipping Point didn’t – we had them printed afterwards, which is why they are available separately (same for xPropaganda)
Thanks Paul. Currently on holiday in Portugal. Too much Sangria I think.
Keep ’em coming…
Vinyl bundle ordered again.
I do love it when you do the vinyl bundles with these. Total no-brainer to instantly purchase!! Thanks
Ordered straight away !
Well that’s buggered up my resolution to buy nothing beyond pre-orders already placed.
But I’ve got every version of Tubular Bells & the compulsion was too strong. Blu & LP ordered, resisted the CD – for now . . .
That’s a brilliant start to the weekend! Well done on securing another iconic album for the continuing SDE surround series. I have purchased this in every format (except the quad sacd) in addition to the 2003 version DVD Audio. I really like Mike Oldfields 5.1 remixes of the first 3 albums. Shame the multitrack were damaged/degraded for Incantations and Platinum and hence no surround mixes (other than a partial one for Incantations – my personal favourite Oldfield album). Always hoped Tubular Bells and the others would be released on lossless blu-ray – should be even better in Atmos. Looking forward to the SDE anniversary editions of Hergest and Ommadawn. Thanks Paul – great work, once again.
Very good and very tempted, but… do I want to make my 2003 dvd-audio 5.1 MLP mix (which I love!!) redundant? This is the question.
Yes you do!! Atmos really is a step up. I have so many 5.1 mixes but Atmos mixes out shine all of them.
@kauwgompie thank you for the input, i am not Atmos enabled due to reasons of practicality however an Atmos mix would still sound Steller on my 7.2 setup.
The DVD-A is a complete re-recording, so I don’t think the two should wrestle for the same position. It’s the same composition, but a different rendition…
@julesRules Thanks for the feedback Jules, that is a good way of putting it.
This is surely the biggest SDE release to date. Congratulations Paul on all that you are doing to keep physical releases to the fore.
Is this the John michie from taggart,if so you and Blyth where in my flat when you filmed a fistfull of chips in 99!! Stuntman flying over my railings! Hope your we’ll John.
Might be the musician of the same name.from Northumberland
Amazing. Ordered my usual two (2).
This is amazing – it’s testament to your influence and reach, and for us fans of physical media may it long continue – Kudos to you Paul.
Thanks Lizzie!
Hi Paul, Already have a number of release but ordered right away ! Thank you!
Cheers!
Speaking of SDE releases…
In my excitement about the Orbital blu-ray release I ended up ordering it twice! I would like to sell it to an SDE reader in the United States before posting it on eBay. It is unopened, and includes the Orbital slipcase along with the xPropaganda and Tears For Fears slipcases.
Maybe Paul can send my email address to the first person that responds.
Cheers!
Ha! That’s funny, I did the same thing with the xPropaganda blu-ray. After considering resale options, I ended up giving it to a friend who I thought might appreciate the music but would definitely appreciate the surround sound experience.
Good luck finding a buyer!
Hey Mikey…I want that Orbital off your hands & I’m in New York…I missed the window due to my cruises…last one I got was Brian Eno & ordered TFF the Hurting & now Tubular Bells…so I’m just missing Orbital, Ten Years After & George Harrison…anyone have an extra 10YA & George they are willing to sell or part with?? Mikey, how shall we arrange??
Larry,
George Harrison is still available through the SDEShop, and you can save on shipping by ordering it with the Tubular Bells (or another item).
As for me, the one I’m missing is Gilbert O’Sullivan … anyone? (I’m in NZ, btw).
Larry it is yours!
I will email Paul and see if we can exchange emails.
Thanks!
@larrydavis
My first and never heard this album before. But l support SDE and all the money they saved me over the years. Thanks !
You never heard at least the single of Tubular Bells?? Ever hear the fe do de do de do music from ‘The Exorcist”?? That’s Tubular Bells…
I’m trying to cut down drastically on my purchases having just bought a house, and “just when I think I’m out, they pull me back in”!
This, like The Hurting, is way to great to miss. It would be superb, but unlikely, if you could pull off Dolby Atmos mixes for Hergest Ridge and Ommadawn too. I loved the quad mixes in the original vinyl “Boxed” set in 1975, and still prefer that version of Hergest Ridge to this day!
Major release Paul
The old sacd version going for silly money has just been relegated.
Kudos for this ; these releases are getting better with each subsequent issue. Hoping this series keeps succeeding.
Completely understand his decision to step back from the music business. Can’t believe he wouldn’t still be playing music for his own enjoyment so he might do something which he feels he want to share in the future but that’s his decision.
What is a shame is that there’s isn’t some sort of tribute event, I know I would like to thank him for the incredible music he has given us over 50 years especially as it impacted his health over the years. You can argue that this struggle is what informed some of his most emotional pieces like the guitar solo at the end of part one of Ommadawn, one of the most heartbreaking moments of music ever.
Another blinding release Paul. Ordered. Keep it going mate, loving these releases.
Great release, Paul!
I ordered three copies for friends an myself, they will be a great birthday gift!
Best wishes to all readers!
Looking forward to this Atmos release too! Ordered!!
I really love that these original Quad mixes are getting released along with a new dolby atmos mix. Ordered right away!
Paul, I wonder if you can do an idiots guide to Dolby Atmos. I’ve tried Google but still don’t understand what equipment I’d need. Number of speakers etc.
I keep living in houses with odd shaped rooms meaning I’ve never really been able to enjoy surround sound so far.
I had a 5.1 system being front left, centre, front right, rear left, rear right speakers plus sub-woofer for bass. (being the .1 part). My Blu-ray player and AV amplifier were both capable of playing Dolby Atmos stuff (music and more commonly films), so I took the simplest and least disruptive option of adding to upward facing Dolby Atmos speakers which sit on top of my front left and right speakers, pointing upward to bounce the sound off the ceiling (saves having to cut holes up there for speakers). My room is quite small too for all this kit, so I moved house!
That’s the decision we all eventually come to! (Moving house to make more room, I mean).
Explaining Atmos can get complicated quickly. I assume you are familiar with stereo and 5.1.
Atmos is a digital processing system that takes into consideration your speakers and even room characteristics (if assessed by your Atmos processor after doing a series of tests of your system) and adds to the fixed speaker locations a number digital point sources (up to 118) between your speakers to create a 3D experience. These point sources are created by manipulating the sound coming out of your fixed speakers to emulate a sound coming from a location between or away from your speakers. It’s like when your front speakers create a “soundstage” in front of you, Atmos creates a dynamic “soundstage” all around you based on your speaker and room characteristics. And with such control, Atmos can make a sound move around the room (movie effects and more adventurous music effects).
To be able to get Atmos effects you need to have an Atmos source, a means to process the Atmos, and speakers to give you the immersive experience.
TV shows, movies, and music are now being streamed with Atmos information. Blu-rays can contain Atmos for movies and music but you’ll need a player to play them. Atmos can be processed by a TV, Soundbar, integrated AV amplifier, or pre-amp processor feeding into an amplifier.
There are various levels of Atmos that can be achieved in a home, ranging from a stereo set up with an Atmos soundbar to a home theater with surround up-firing speaker or ceiling speakers. While every additional speaker will increase the degree of Atmos you can experience, and in-ceiling is considered better than upfiring, 7.2+4 (3 front, 2 side, 2 rear) + 2 subs, + 4 ceiling speakers is a desired configuration to achieve a full 3 D Atmos experience.
I hope this helps, and FYI, I am an amateur hi-fi enthusiast with a system that has evolved from 2.0 to 2.1 to 5.1 to 7.1 to 7.1+2 to 7.1+4 over 20 years. And if anyone wants to correct or add to what I’ve written, please do.
Paul,
Thanks for this new release. Happy for those who can enjoy Dolby Atmos music.
Alas, I can only feel sad reading that I will no longer be able to do what I’ve been doing for the last 30 years or so, that is discovering new Mike Oldfield music.
Can’t believe his musical retirement is now officially announced.
:'(
Fantastic. Ordered. I look forward to finally hearing the 2009 5.1 mix as high resolution audio. The previous release, in an otherwise superb CD/DVD/LP set was old style lossy Dolby Digital.
Amazing. Ordered. I really appreciate being able to get my covers for xPropaganda and TFF. Top job, Mr Sinclair.
Great news but why Mike Oldfield haven’t done new music since 5 years ?
Thierry O,
If you read Paul’s excellent information section about this release above, you would have seen that Mike Oldfield retired from recording 5 years ago.
It’s really disappointing to hear, if that is indeed the end of his recording career… Return to Ommadawn got a lot of good reviews and was widely hailed as a return to form. I’m not sure if the world really needed another TB album but it didn’t feel like that was the end of his career. Maybe the 50th anniversary celebration will get him to rethink that.
Congratulations again Paul. Another amazing SDE release!
This was the album that introduced me to serious contemporary music when my oldest brother got it and I was 10. I also bought my own copy of the LP, then first CD issue, remastered HDCD, SACD, and CD+DVD, but this is an instant purchase and I trust will be the definitive version.
Question: how do the old quad mixes work on modern 5.1 systems? Do they just come out of the four outer speakers and not utilise the centre?
Basically, yes. The amp will show 5.1 but it will just be the four channels ‘active’.
Can you confirm the audio format of the quad version? Is it encoded in DTS or LPCM? My old system cannot process more than 2 channels in LPCM. I learned that through the Pink Floyd Immersion Blu-ray’s…
DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (although there won’t be a .1 and the 5 will actually be a 4)
You probably already know this, but for the benefit of those that don’t: you’ll want any bass management settings in your amp/receiver to be set to something like “LFE+Bass”, so that the subwoofer also looks after the bass frequencies of the 4.0 (i.e no dedicated “.1” LFE channel) quad signal. This also means setting other speaker sizes to “small”, which allows the receiver to do its crossover thing properly, but people with larger or floor-standing speakers often find that counter-intuitive.
Ordered without hesitation. I have the 2009 5.1 surround mix and was looking for the Sacd version for the original quad mix. But with so much more content on this Blu-ray … so happy.
Wow! What a score for you, Paul, and for SDE! This has got to be the Holy Grail of all Hi-Res/Multi-Channel re-issues and we are so proud to see you win the privilege to champion this release.
Ordered, of course. Thank you, Paul!
Thanks Derek! :)
you got me once again! Something I’ll probably listen to once a year (kinda burned out on Tubular Bells a few decades ago), but worth having in such a comprehensive and quality presentation .. but most importantly, another opportunity to acknowledge SDE for everything you do!!!
Thank you! :)
I’m conflicted about this one. I always shied away from buying either of the 2009 formats because 1) I don’t want the vinyl but 2) I do want the demos from the 3rd CD of that box set.
If a new box set was released featuring the original stereo mix, 2009 and/or 2023 stereo mix and demos on CD and this Blu-ray, I’d have been very quick to buy.
The Blu-ray certainly has a lot of content – and I’m glad the series is developing like that – but it does lack at least one part of the 2009 DVD (the BBC TV performance, obviously hard to square with the “pure audio” label) and the demos are still absent from all new formats. (Edit: except for the RSD LP, see comment below!)
Mike’s discography has long been complicated…
If you want the demos without buying the 2009 box set, best is to buy where they appeared first, the 2003 DVD-Audio. You can easily find 2nd hand copies at very reasonable prices.
Thanks for pointing that out. Proving how complicated Mike’s discography is! I bought the CD/DVD edition of TB2003, not realising at the time that the DVD only had a taster of the 5.1 mix.
Then of course, I still prefer having a stereo track actually available on CD, but I guess that DVD-A will have to do, and buying it + the new Blu-ray will be an adequate replacement for the Ultimate edition.
Still somewhat baffled at the new single CD edition… They couldn’t even bother to make it a double with the new stereo mix, á la in 2009?
Saw this and I was like “hmmm should I buy this??? Uhhh DUH”…ordered the bundle with the CD plus the xPropaganda slipcase…but weird that those 2 tracks…the single & Tubular X are not on either, just the new vinyl…I may buy that later on…but agree that TB is not MO’s only good work…love Moonlight Shadow & the Islands album, long time ago I had the 4CD Elements box, and would love an update…
For some curious reason I have a massive soft-spot for Voyager, it’s probably the only post TBII album I regularly spin. Who is to say why certain albums (Earth Moving / Voyager) hit your sweet spot and certain others (Heaven’s Open) haven’t been played again in 30 years.
Although I’ve ordered and enjoyed all of the other SDE blu-rays, this has to be the one that excites me the most!
Fans of Tubular Bells and Mike Oldfield should check out Rob Reed’s (and his band Magenta if you like Yes and other prog music) fantastic Sanctuary albums that have more than a nod to Mike Oldfield. And they’re all available in a CD & DVD combo with great 5.1 mixes!!
Sorry Stephen, but to me, Robert Reed’s music is just ripping-off Mike Oldfield’s music.
For RSD this year (22nd April), the original 1971 demos for Tubular Bells are being released on vinyl “for the first and only time ever in a limited pressing, cut at Abbey Road by Miles Showell”. Couldn’t find this on the RSD lists for USA/Canada though.
Now titled Opus One, the demo versions were previously issued on CD as part of the 35th anniversary Ultimate Edition box set.
So they didn’t actually forget about the demos! A shame a digital reissue outside of the 2009 box wasn’t possible.
Great that these 1971 demos are also making it to vinyl. Interestingly, the first time they had been released, six years prior to the box set, was on the Tubular Bells 2003 DVD-Audio: Mike Oldfield – Tubular Bells 2003 (2003, Super Jewel Box, DVD) – Discogs
This is amazing. The cover looks beautiful in itself.
Dammit, Paul! I’ve been able to successfully avoid these releases as I don’t even remotely have a sound system that will make it worth it (truly just my TV’s speakers) and no idea when I will but I think you finally broke me with this one. Not like I don’t already have an embarrassing number of versions of this beloved album, but this is just too good to pass up. So I guess I should say “Thank You Paul!” instead.
If you think you will eventually get surround sound, I encourage you to get this. I got my first surround sound disc before I had a surround sound system, and I’m glad I did. That disc was Steely Dan’s Gaucho ($1!!!).
Oh, it’s been ordered! I just couldn’t resist (the bundle with the CD). And, yes, if I ever do get a full surround sound system, this will be the first thing I play on it.
Why does the cd and Blu-ray not get the extra couple of tracks on the vinyl ?!! Space really can’t be an issue on at least the Blu-ray
I’d love the single (and the awful bside) to be on there, and Viv Stanshall version of the Sailor’s Hornpipe.
Ordered the BR+CD Bundle. Do I need another copy of Tubular Bells ? For sure :)
1 Vinyl bought back in 1985
1 CD with the original mix
2 CD from Boxed (one with the original part 1, the other with the remixed version)
1 CD with the 1993 Elements remaster
1 gold CD with the 1998 remaster
1 HDCD
1 SACD
2 CD with the 2009 remaster (one standalone, the other from the Classic Album Selection)
1 Deluxe Edition with the 2009 remaster
1 Super Deluxe Edition with the 2009 remaster
Not counting the live versions and the sequels :)
Manu
Fantastic album, well done getting this as a SDE. Bit disappointed that CD missing Tubular X, says first time on vinyl. Anyone know if this has appeared on CD at all.
Yes it was on an X- files soundtrack
Thanks Paul will have to track it down.
Found it on Amazon for £8, or 2nd hand on music magpie for £1.50 plus postage. Thanks for updating about this track, no idea it existed
It was the first track the european CD version of The X-Files: The Album
That’s the one! :)
There it is, with plenty to buy at a low price: The X-Files: The Album (1998, CD) – Discogs
Ooh, will have to check the bank account, as a well-done ATMOS mix of this would be fantastic (especially as I hated the 2009 surround mix which I found far too bass-heavy). Didn’t know that Mike had retired, as I quite liked Ommadawn II. I suppose that means that the deluxe re-issues are dead too after Discovery.
I am still praying for the Deluxe Editions to continue. If at least Islands could be released as DE…
I remember he was very enthusiastic when he talked about remastering Amarok. That should’ve meant he had already finished work on Islands and Earth Moving, but we’ve seen none of them… :(
OK, bullet bit and ordered :)
The year was 1973, and I was then five years old when I heard for the first time Tubular Bells, playing in the living room, coming from my dad’s Revox A77; my parents didn’t own the album but borrowed it from a friend, and my dad taped it. Together with Pink Floyd’s Meddle, Jean-Michel Jarre’s Oxygene, Vangelis’ L’Apocalypse Des Animaux, and The Alan Parsons Project’s Tales Of Mystery & Imagination, Tubular Bells has been the soundtrack of my youth at home in the 70s.
Fifty years later, I still very much enjoy Mike’s music, now as a proud owner of all his albums and singles in various physical formats. These 50th anniversary Blu-ray, 2xLP and CD releases will nicely complement my 25th anniversary gold CD/book, 2001 SACD, 2007 Japanese mini-LP CD, 2009 2xCD+DVD Deluxe Edition, 2009 LP+3xCD+DVD numbered/signed box set, 2009 Japanese Mini-LP 2xCD+DVD set, and 2016 Half-Speed Mastering 2xLP set (Not listing here TBII, TBIII and TB2003 editions).
Thank you, Paul, for not only making such new Blu-ray release possible, but also for offering it with so much attractive content!
Fairly easy decision
Blu-ray and half speed vinyl ordered
(Learned lesson from TFF error when I didn’t notice the bundle option and lost the chance to save some money!!)
Could not hand my money over fast enough, Paul. One of my favourite albums of all time. I have about 5 different copies already, but this is an absolute no-brainer. Really looking forward to this. Thank you.
Have the ultimate TB box from a while back so this is the ideal companion….*ordered*
This now appears to be the ultimate TB box
Ordered !
Can’t wait for this .
I’ve got the SACD and the DVD so will be nice to have it all together on one disc .
Paul , my Concert For George didn’t come with a slip case , is that right ?
Thanks!! Correct re CFG :)
Fantastic news. I have been playing Tubular Bells in many differing versions over the last year or so almost to the point of obsession, at least once a week. I remeber the the first time it came out and everybody I knew just had to have a copy. Since then I have had loads of different versions including the recent orchestral version without input from Michael but still really good in my opinion.
All I have to do is now is convince my other half to let me swap my basic dolby soundbar for the all bells and whistles Sony one at my former home.
Ordered straight away this time without hesitation. Thanks
This is my 3rd blu Ray exclusive I’ve now ordered! Fabulous, thank you
Great set, but I have the previous release in 5.1 so not sure this is an essential for me. I actually think Tubular Bells II is better musically and vastly underrated. I’d also love a surround reissue of Crises as I missed it first time; in my view side 1 is the best thing he’s ever recorded.
Yes and I think Tubular Bells 3 is even better than both 1 and 2, This 50 years is one hell of milestone for the original Tubular Bells but there is only so much I can take of this album, It’s almost like he’s not ever done anything else…Mike Oldfield is an incredible multi instrumentalist that has made a lot of superb albums throughout his long career, and I recommend anyone who’s not heard anything else beyond Tubular Bells to go and delve into his back catalogue and immerse yourself in some wonderful melodic gems
I love TBIII. I had the rare Crises box set, but sold it a few years ago. Wish I hadn’t! Amarok is brilliant as well. A stick two fingers up at Richard Branson album, which even has a rude morse code message in, reportedly aimed at Mr Branson! Yes there is more to Mike Oldfield than TBs and I’m quite glad he’s not milked it yet again! I have an original white label release, (not in great condition), quad vinyl boxed, 25th anniversary cd, the ultimate box set and a few more besides! Do I order the vinyl? Hmm. Tempting!
Great news. I only have the original vinyl version of T B and resisted all the other issues over the years. This is too good to pass up and my order for the SDE Blu ray is in.
PS Enjoying the Concert For George audio blu ray too. Fantastic mix.
Wow what a coup. I love the fact the SDE series is revisiting older releases and including original quad mixes as part of the package. My dad loved this album so this was a no brainer for me but I’ve got every release in the series so far. Long may these continue Paul and keep up the fantastic work!
You continue to kill it, Paul. Immediate order. Thanks a lot!
already have the 2001 SACD but this was a no brainer for me. can’t wait.
Ordered as always. Paul knows how to choose and write his own history in the music scene. Hope he can keep this #SDE serie ongoing for a long term.
This is absolutely fantastic news, one of the best instrumental albums of the 70’s, the one that made a lot of other similar albums possible. I’ll be getting this for sure. I still own the white and black label first pressing of this and Side 1 is essential listening,
Hey Paul,
This is a fantastic release!
Blu-ray ordered without hesitation.
Chart fact…
Tubular Bells spent 10 consecutive weeks at no.2 before spending its solitary week at no.1 (w/e 5 October 1974.)
Becoming, at that point, only the third artist to replace themselves at number 1. Bob Dylan and the Beatles were the only artists to achieve that feat previously. It’s been done a total of 6 times now, which over 60-odd years is quite a rarity.
Tubular Bells Replaced Hergest Ridge at Number 1, in case anyone was wondering.
TB knocked it’s successor, Hergest Ridge, from the top spot that week – so his first (solo) album was actually his second chart-topper!
Ordered straight away, but the postage seems rather steep.
Without knowing your specific circumstances It’s hard to say, but it is a genuinely unfair comment. Paul’s products are very well packed (which are part or the postage price). It’s nuts that people compare a small business having to use UK Royal Mail or with international postage, to something like Amazon’s system, multi Billions and still it’s a lottery as to the packaging. Yes it will turn up, yes it is cheap, (free if you pay £90 a year for prime – so not free then), but in what condition it turns up in is anyone’s guess. People literally post here when an Amazon parcel comes through well and sensibly packed with no dings, it’s that unual.
£23 for all that audio, in a unique product and £5 postage? That doesn’t seem “Rather Steep”. The insinuation from the words “Rather Steep” (whether you meant it or not) is that this is somehow a rip off?
This type of compaint is just misguided, to me at any rate.
Well, I never mentioned Amazon. I also buy music (and movies) from other, smaller organisations. I also occasionally sell bits and bobs on eBay, so I know about postage rates and packaging costs too. I’m happy that you were only charged £5 for postage. I was charged £6. My specific circumstances? I’m in the Isle of Man. But Royal Mail charges the same rate to the Isle of Man as to the UK (Google it, if you don’t believe me). And the rate to send a Blu-Ray ‘Tracked 48’ is £3.35 (or £3.71 signed for). Both covered up to £100. So that’s more than £2 for packaging. That’s what I mean by ‘rather steep’.
What about the person who gets the packaging, packs the item, prints a label and sticks it on and then puts it in a bag? Should that person work for free or should we pay them to do that? You are paying for three things: packaging, postage and fulfilment. We are 10 releases deep into this series and it’s still disappointing when people complain about a reasonable postage/packaging/fulfilment fee which we make zero profit from.
The packaging is first rate and the prices for postage, well that’s out of SDE’s control
SDE postage price for US is well under average and items come well-packed in sturdy cardboard boxes.
Well, my brain took a minute to process this and about 30 nano seconds to hit buy.
This, for me at any rate is part of my psyche. Started listening in about 1978. Used to come home from school at lunch time, take my Dad’s speakers off the wall and lie on the floor between them each and every school day for weeks. Today I’m gonna just listen to this instrument…… (Why we never had headphones I don’t know but I was only 11 and didn’t question anything). I only listened to the very first black and white label A1 / B1 last night (with the original laminated cover before they went cheaper).
You’ve made my weekend, thank you Paul.
How big were the speakers hopefully not Tannoy Westminster’s !!,
just ordered the Blu-ray and Vinyl bundle.
your getting some brilliant releases in this series.
Thanks Paul
I love in the U.K. but Paul you really should open a branch in the states. You could save the physical market singlehanded. Feels like you’ve just announced the release of the plinth to the Holy Grail of not the grail itself …. Wow! Ps. Two of my purchased shipped without the sleeve ….. how do I get them (Propaganda, Orbital) ? Cheers
Briljant ! Thank You (again)
Twice an anniversary. 50 years and #10 in this Superb serie !
I have the SACD version already but (a) I like to support physical surround sound releases, (b) I like to particularly support the SDE Shop and (c) I couldn’t not add to my SDE surround collection when they look so great together on the shelf! Ordered!
Snap!
Another easy purchase. Thanks Paul!
Fantastic news. Will be pre-ordered as soon as I can get to my laptop :)
CRISES next please, Paul. The original surround mix SDE was only in print for, what, 5 minutes?
I’ll be right behind you in the queue for that one. Even the Ultra HD version of that on Amazon Music sounds amazing now you can stream high bitrates.
Crises next? I’m in for that too :-)
Crises was repressed, but I still managed to wait around too long & they were all gone. Oh well.
Brilliant. Sadly not a whole new composition.
Haha. I received an email from Universal Music announcing the CD and Vinyl release, and thought to myself “why the hell isn’t there a blu-ray surround edition? I don’t get it…” Your website answered that question quickly :) Ordered right away of course. And what a treat to see all the different mixes present on the blu-ray release. It’s almost Christmas! Great job, once again. Thank you Paul for your efforts. Best from rainy Switzerland.
As soon as I read that email announcement – with it’s mention of a Dolby Atmos listening party – I thought it a good possibility there could be a future SDE blu-ray. Didn’t expect it to appear within minutes on this site though! Ordered.
Seems like SDE is producing a constant stream of “fastest pre-order ever” goodies. I have been living with this album for as long as I can remember, and I am thrilled to pieces to hear this new mix. Thanks SO MUCH for making this happen!!!
Ordered as always. This series is such fantastic value and quality.
