  1. Great video as ever Paul but you’re right – an American Life remix/edit record certainly wouldn’t be the top of most people’s lists of Madonna releases! Where on earth are the super deluxe editions of her albums that were promised about two years ago?? Forget about this kind of tosh!

  2. Excellent video again, Paul.

The U2 release is a let down. I was hoping for the Francois Kervorkian mixes of New Year’s Day and Two Hearts Beat As One getting the RSD reissue treatment. Either that or the War album on red vinyl. Instead of honouring their ‘War’ period and its 40th anniversary, they are (still) shamelessly plugging Songs of Surrender.

  3. Lovely artwork for the Blur release and matching of translucent vinyl colour to the cover is really cool, but what is the significance of the number 877 on the sleeve ? Both copies I saw in local store today had the same number so not ‘individually numbered’ !!

  4. I’m listening to xStrangely on Spotify as I write this. Completely useless release but I’ll try to buy an lp online anyway monday. I’ll leave it unopened and file it with the many many many other ZTT-releases that I’ve bought over the years. Suckered-in by the ZTT marketing machine, again, 40 years later…

    1. Listening to this “completely useless” release as I type… I love it, as it is to The Heart Is Strange what Wishing Thinking and Eight Testaments are to A Secret Wish. My only criticism is that, while I really enjoy the ‘Moods’ echoing the ‘Testaments’, I wish the edits and mixes were more remixed.

    2. I agree it’s very patchy and too many short doodles/moods. The remix of Beauty is Truth is dire, this track could’ve been enhanced and developed, but for me it’s ruined here. The Mood that precedes it is rather nice, though. The Ware remix of Only Human is pretty uninspiring too. Overall its good to get a physical release on RSD, but as a full hi-res digital release came out the same day streaming it did at least save me the best part of £30. The original album is great, but xStrangely is far from an essential companion for my collection.

    3. quite enjoying the release so far, and thankful to have got it at regular price in the “day after sale” at a local shop nearby. Saved me from the Ebay robbers asking £120 for it. (OUCH!)

  5. People were queuing up this morning at Hit Import , Nice, France . I finally got the 12″ Porcupine Tree EP with four tracks (Drown with me /Chloroform on side A Revenant/Mother and Child Divided on side B). 180 g vinyl for 29 euros .
Ok but for this price i was expecting an inner sleeve or polyline….nothing . I thought the RSD was for vinyl lovers , it seems that Transmission records the label doesn’t like them.

  6. The only RSD release I’m interested in this year is the reissue of the Boris/Sunn O))) 2006 split album. It’s called “Altar” and it’s a masterpiece of heavy drone and cinematic ghostly ballads. Unfortunately, there is no independant record store around, so the matter is settled.

  7. Have to say that I enjoyed the remixes from Madonna’s “American Life” LP much more than the album as a whole…including Peter Rauhofer’s. There was an EP of “Nothing Fails” and “Nobody Knows Me” remixes that got me moving back in the day. Might give this collection a look if I can find it for a decent price. Madonna RSD releases are usually produced in large enough numbers that they’re still affordable even after a few months when things have settled down.

    1. I bought back in the day the album and all CD singles. While I do enjoy the remixes from Peter Rauhofer, none of them IMHO come close to the original production from Mirwais. I still dream to the day of the entire album had been remixed in extended form by Mirwais himself. Just have a listen to his own solo album dating from the same period, and imagine how Madonna’s tracks could have sounded like as extended versions: https://www.discogs.com/master/80351-Mirwais-Production

  8. Have you seen this???
RECORD STORE DAY IS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT THIS YEAR, reflecting the fact that many record shops now have on-line stores. RSD2023 releases will be available in-store from Saturday 22nd April with any unsold stock being listed in their on-line stores just a couple of days later on Monday 24th from 8pm. This is a great opportunity for people who don’t have a record store nearby, so make sure you grab your copy!
Errr… so record STORE day no longer means what it says on the tin?

    1. Queuing up tomorrow a.m. is the best way of trying to get what you want. Waiting until Monday evening means hoping that they might have stock left. So I will be queuing up tomorrow morning as per usual.

    2. As Jefferson says, ’twas ever thus. What’s different about this year is that they have shortened the embargo window until shops can put their RSD stocks online for web sales. Pre-pandemic it used to be not until 6pm of the Friday after.

    3. As others have said this is nothing new – although I’m surprised they’ve reduced the wait for online sales to Monday evening as you’d have thought that would reduce the incentive for more walk-in customers to visit physical shops during the week after RSD. They will have polled shops to take a vote on this so presumably it’s the preference of the majority of shop owners. The majority of shops that trade in new releases (or do a mix of new and 2nd hand) will do both Online and physical sales to help pay the rent and rates. I think – for all its flaws- things like RSD are a necessary part of the precarious ecosystem to keep Record Shops open in our towns and cities (and in some towns Record Shops, vintage shops and other quirkier destinations are becoming a key attractor and ‘anchor’ as much as big chain stores). There are also a lot of Bricks & Mortar only releases throughout the year now too, like those collectable ‘Dinked Edition’ releases that fly off the shelves and give new artists a decent leg-up at the same time.

      1. Yep I was going to say one thing that’s changed since 2009 is that there are probably more indie shops with an online storefront now so it’s more in their interest. Possibly having the shorter window also helps smaller indie shops, rather than driving people to big indies?

    4. Sad to say, but I think I’m done waiting in line and am switching to online orders later (waiting a month or two for prices to be reasonable). I got to my local shop at 3:30am, only to see the parking lot full of cars and 35+ people already in line, around the block and into the alley with dumpsters and trash and god knows what else. Since I know my local shop only got 1 or 2 copies of the titles I was after, the entire exercise was pointless – I turned around, went home and got a good rest of my sleep. I’m sure it was the Taylor Swift release that did this, but I used to be able to get there by 4 or 5am and still have a good chance at things. I’m over it. I do want to support my local shop too – but not at the expense of freezing for hours outside surrounded by garbage only to be S.O.L. on the titles I’m after…

    5. I hadn’t seen that. Glad you pointed it out, last year it was back to the following Saturday @ 6pm in the UK. Previous couple of years (during Covid) it was shortened to the later the actual day, IIRC.

  9. Well thank you for these instructive videos Paul. My choice for tomorrow is ….one of the items you don’t talk about the Porcupine Tree PT/IA/DW/XT which is a 12 inches record with 4 extra tracks (2 of In Absentia an 2 of Deadwing ) and maybe if i find it the Police Every Breath you take double 7 inches. I got Roxanne and Message in a Botle and they are very collectors items.
