Paul Young / The Crossing: SDE-exclusive signed coloured vinyl

Paul signs this limited edition for SDE readers!

Paul Young is signing these exclusively for SDE. Coloured vinyl pressing limited to 1000 units. Quick pre-order link.

Paul Young’s 1993 album,The Crossing, is being reissued for its 30th anniversary and SDE can exclusively offer a limited number of copies signed by Paul Young himself.

Originally released in October 1993, The Crossing was Young’s fifth and final album for Columbia Records. Produced largely by Don Was and featuring top musicians such as Billy Preston, The Memphis Horns, Jeff Porcaro and his older mucker Pino Palladino, the album is regarded by fans and critics as one of Paul Young’s very best solo works.

The album includes Young’s last top 20 UK hit, the excellent ‘Now I Know What Made Otis Blue’ but it’s much more than a one-trick pony and features a slickly produced series of songs including ‘Hope in a Hopeless World’, ‘The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter’ and ‘Half A Step Away’.

When interviewed for this 30th Anniversary release, Paul Young said: “If you were to ask me the albums I most enjoyed making they would be the first and the last for Columbia Records; No Parlez and The Crossing.

On The Crossing, it was the caliber of the musicians that I worked with and I was working with my musical heroes, some of which I’d admired since I was a teenager. The sessions were so relaxed and all the people in the studio were such lovely people to work with, I will remember it forever.”

This vinyl reissue of The Crossing comes in a gatefold sleeve is is pressed on 180g turquoise vinyl. A new interview with Paul Young features inside the gatefold and it comes with an insert with lyrics. The front cover of each record will be personally signed by Paul Young at SDE HQ.

It’s available to order exclusively via the SDE shop where you can also get yourself a copy of SDE’s exclusive keepsake 24-page booklet on Paul Young’s second album, The Secret of Association. Published last year, this features new interviews with Paul Young and Laurie Latham, along with features, a discography and images of memorabilia. For the very first time we can offer these SIGNED by Paul Young!

  1. Sadly my signed copy arrived damaged here in the US. Big crease in top left corner, split top seam, about 2 inches. I can see why some sellers on discogs now ship the vinyl outside the sleeve. Never thought of that before. Pauls packaging was undamaged, though. Still nice to have. Thank you!

  2. Ridiculous cast including many of the MJ’s Thriller personnel (Paul Jackson Jr., Jeff Porcaro, Greg Phillinganes, Lenny Castro, Dean Parks). Then the writers of Whitney Houston songs How Will I Know, I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Merrill/Rubicam) provided “Bring me home” produced and played by Mike & the Mechanics people etc.

  3. Unfortunately no bonus content, just an expanded booklet… To me it is the music that counts.
I think I will play my original CD and create my own Deluxe Edition including a second CD featuring:
    1. Man Of Steel
    2. Cold Sweat
    3. What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted
    4. I’m Your Puppet (Duet with Elton John)
    5. Long Distance Love (Acoustic)
    6. Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight (Acoustic)
    7. Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home) (Acoustic)
    8. Everything Must Change (Acoustic)
    9. Follow On (Acoustic)
    10. Love Has No Pride (Acoustic)

It is a good album, though.

  4. Not a vinyl person, but great to hear Now I Know What Made Otis Blue after a long time, it’s an absolute classic. But the video???!?!?!?! Absolutely clueless!! I have no idea what they were trying to do, but it was so out there that I just ignored the visuals and enjoyed the song, because it’s that good!!

  5. I always loved the cover of this album. On a big vinyl cover it will look even better. It’s truly a great album! My favorite track is Down In Chinatown, a duet with actress Kathleen Turner. I wonder how that came about? If anyone knows the background on that, please share! Ordered!

  6. I’d like to own this, but I’d really love to have sde releases of the 1st four solo albums. Paul Young’s catalogue has been criminally neglected, at least in the U.S.

    1. I’d argue far from it – Paul (Sinclair) was involved in the ‘remixes & rarities’ compilation, The CBS Singles Collection 1982-1994, and the excellent Tomb Of Memories (The CBS Years 1982-1994) (which actually got me into this album). First two albums have been released as “deluxe” versions (edsel), as well of course these recent vinyl reissues.

      1. Thanks Andreas. I’m really proud of Tomb Of Memories in particular which was a lot of fun (and work!) To put together. I think it’s a near-perfect overview of Paul’s CBS Years, even if I do say so myself!! :)

      2. Ah, yes. ‘Tomb of Memories’ is great. I own it. But keep in mind that I’m writing from an American perspective. Edsel cds aren’t U.S. releases, and, sadly, all those you mention are out-of-print and command unreasonable prices. The remixes album is from Cherry Red, no? Those are difficult to find in the U.S. as well. And shipping costs are pretty high to me. In fact, all of his albums are sadly out-of-print in the U.S., at least on cd. I could buy used copies of his first few albums for little money, but I want better sound. Most CBS cds from the early to mid 80s don’t sound all that great to my ears. So I stand by my original statement.

  7. Ordered at the 14th attempt :-) but worth persevering for. This is the “Golden Years” album that I know least well as life was changing for this (then) 26 year old and I had devoured everything for the previous decade. I hope I can now give it the attention and time it deserves. Thank you Paul.

  8. Hi Paul, I’m trying to buy the signed vinyl and booklet but both googlepay and shoppay are saying they can’t find my shipping address! I’ve checked it four times and restarted my laptop in between. I’ve bought from you before ( via paypal, but that won’t recognise it either) with no problems, and I’m in the UK. Any ideas please?

  9. Great news, and I didn’t need to think about it, a straight forward preorder.

I was hoping you may advertise his new album, but I’m more than happy with any release of his, such a distinctive and wonderful voice.
