Sex Pistols / Anarchy in the UK 7″ red vinyl
Limited and numbered seven-inch
The Sex Pistols debut single Anarchy in the UK is being made available as a limited edition red vinyl seven-inch single next month.
The single was the only track issued under the band’s deal with the EMI, before they were dropped after their controversial appearance Bill Grundy show appearance.
This is the first time the single has been officially made available on coloured vinyl. It comes in a plain black sleeve replica, as per the original (there were some die-cut red EMI sleeves too), and will be limited to 4576 units (45 RPM and 1976, if you’re wondering). Each will be individually numbered and we’re promised more single replicas to come.
This is only available by Universal D2C (Direct to Consumer channels) and will be released on 9 June 2023.

Even the poster somehow also managed to get damaged. All came in a black plastic bag. Zero protection. A joke.
Not good at all. I’m sure you’ve already complained, but if you want I can pass your details to someone high up at Universal and help sort this out for you (email me at [email protected])
Thanks for that, I’ve used their online form to ask for a replacement already.
Hopefully it’ll be sorted. Pity and wasteful if they are sending them all out like this if you order the vinyl with a poster.
Sex Pistols 7” & poster just arrived. Thin card envelope. No stiffener.
Much moaning about the £16 price. Between the mid ’90’s and mid ’00’s I bought via Sister Ray in London half a dozen new 7″ singles weekly delivered to my door for £3 each. I’ve sold many but have retained 300 now worth between £20 and £150 (early Blur) each. Hardly any singles released now. This Pistols single will likely increase in value. Buy it as a commodity or to have a listen but don’t moan.
Interesting this one. I’ve ordered but purely for nostalgia reasons. I would have liked to have owned it back in the day but couldn’t find it (pre-internet) or afford it. By the time I could afford it, there were other priorities in my life and a flood of counterfeits at record fairs.
It’s basically going to be a £16 ornament in my collection – doubt I’ll ever play it, but it will give me some warm fuzzy feeling for owning it.
Last years “God Save The Queen” repress (limited to 1977 copies) sold out pretty immediately. The alleged “error” press (also 1977 copies) also sold out lighting fast. This reissue (4576 copies) is surprisingly still available 3 days later, so maybe the market for these nostalgia releases isn’t that big after all.
I’m surprised though that they haven’t also released a second version in the traditional red EMI die-cut sleeve – or maybe they will?
Hi wrong debate sorry ! But jethro tulls broadsword deluxe now September!
Jethro Tull in a pistols thread, and a thumbs up. Jesus things have changed.
It’s like punk never happened…
So what’s your pistol comment !
See below, there’s even a picture. ( love those exclamation marks jethro, in fact, l’ll join in, ! )
So a thumbs up eh !!!!
Too right jethro ! And l hope you make it to september and enjoy another deluxe edition of your faves. We all know it’s not 1976 anymore but l’m always happy to look back and laugh.
Good value!
A large pizza from the hut or Dom’s will now cost you £16 and be gone in sixty seconds,,this Will be with you forever and will probably be worth double in 20 year’s!!
I’d pay the price for a surround version on Blu Ray.
I’m sure a few ex/late members of the band would be so thrilled to see how their work has been commercially exploited.
I was a teenager in the punk era, sadly never saw the Pistols but saw pretty much anyone who was anyone. Still got my original EMI 7″. To me punk was about not having rules or principles, nor indeed caring about what others got up to nor what other people think. I don’t care whether some fat cat gets a cut of this, or whether John Lydon does or doesn’t. Just happy that the music lives on, gets out in the wild as often as possible, and might get to new listeners (maybe it won’t, but worth a try). Those that feel ripped off can only feel that if they buy it. If you don’t want to feel ripped off, keep your hands on your powder-puff. I bought one. Might even buy another and sell it for a profit.
It almost seems like labels are seeing how much people will pay for something they don’t really need. Glad I am not a vinyl collector.
I’m glad l am
I just can’t not listen to the artifacts that always accumulate with vinyl. My brain focuses on them rather than ignores them when I hear vinyl. As a result, nearly all vinyl sounds flawed to me. I was an early adopter of CD and it released me from the anxiety of purchasing records as many new platters in the late 70s and early 80s were flawed when new. I used to purchase poly-lined inner sleeves and plastic protective covers whenever I bought a record. But it didn’t matter. I always could hear the little pops and clicks, especially on quiet intros to first tracks which are always the most vulnerable areas.
So I am happy for vinyl listeners who can ignore the defects and sorry you have to entertain paying such ridiculous prices for your pleasure. I’ll stick to digital and hope that more music gets released in its highest native digital resolution be it 48/24, 96/24, or 192/24, and in stereo, 5.1, and Atmos formats.
Cool story, bro.
I partially agree with you Derek, but those artefacts, for the most part, will just wash off. the rest off us call it dust.
You see Derek. You’ve done something about your issues with vinyl, by moving to digital. There’s something for everyone these days. I do get tired of people moaning about noisy vinyl! At the end of the day, it’s a physical “contact sport”. A needle, (stylus), being dragged along a groove in a piece of plastic will NEVER be quiet. It’s akin to driving a car. You always have road noise as your tyres are in contact with the road surface. You can reduce that noise by changing the tyres you use, or the type of materials used in the surface of the road, but you will never get rid of it! I’d purchase this, purely to sell on later, but I’m not going to. I’d rather let someone who will garner pleasure from playing it because that’s what it’s made for!
I understand my life is not perfect, just like I am far from perfect. I don’t know anything that I would say is objectively flawless. I like the idea that music, whatever music, sounds as good as it can from the source and so prefer 5.1 to stereo, and stereo to mono, and CD to cassette. But the first time you hear a good vinyl set up, you just know that that is a warm rich take on whatever music is playing, and yes, it’s not flawless. But’s that why it sounds great: it was never flawless in the first place.
Haven’t you just described the record industry?
I think the industry has changed. Gone from asking for a reasonable profit to taking advantage of avid fans and exacting big paydays on limited edition items. Worst case is making mixed media boxed sets with tat, contain minimal content but burying a much wanted Blu-ray in it. I am writing specifically about the Rush Signals box which is 1 LP, 4 7″ singles, 1 CD, a book and a Blu-ray for $200.
Have to agree with you there, which is a slightly different point to the previous poster about exploitation & selling stuff we don’t need. First time for years I sat out record store day…no purchase at all prices way too high for me..Duran selling an EP for £40? No thanks.
The swindle goes on. But it’s down to choice. I won’t as I have it on many different rereleases. Still a band that changed music, which influenced a young me back in 77.
Interesting to see what is going to happen with the other “replica singles” future releases. God Save the Queen on blue vinyl is an obvious choice, except they released one a year ago. Surely not another version 12 months on? Given the original sleeve for Anarchy was black surely the most appropriate colour for this reissue should be….. black LOL.
Next are Holidays In the Sun on white vinyl (20th July) and Pretty Vacant on red vinyl (22nd September) – with 4577 copies of each.
Oh fantastic. Holidays in the Sun was one of their best. And Satellite is one of those tracks that should never have been relegated to being a B side.
Those muttering bitterly about how much this costs should check prices of the forthcoming Du Hast white 7″ from Rammstein….
Or the new Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons Working Our Way Back To You The Ultimate Collection Box-Set. It makes everything else seem reasonable priced! I know it is a box-set but still…
Welcome black, Opera buff, it’s been a while !
Thanks Mr. Remi, we are back in black :)
Here’s the thing…
When “God save the Queen” was reissued on A&M, purple vinyl, I thought “that’s nice” and ordered one, thanks to SOV, and the alert from SDE. I was in Oxford picking up a new telly, but jumped at it, and just as well as it sold out in seconds and was going for daft prices on eBay.
Then, thanks to a label colour misprint, it got repressed again on the correct colour label, and that sold out too. Managed to get one of those..
Anyway, neither were really close to the original hugely rare edition, as it had to include the current owners and the licensee details and so on. So, I sold my ‘correct label colour’ version for a premium, and kept the purple colour label.
Daft thing is, there had already been a decent facsimile included in the “Bollocks” 35th anniversary box, which was almost exactly like the original (slightly thicker wax, no serrated edge rill), and you could get that for a comparatively reasonable price.
Anyway, I did have one chance to get the actual real one for £90 at a record fair back in 1980 or so, but I’d only just started work and had no ready funds….
And the moaners and whingers are OFF!!
Nobody is forcing anyone to buy it are they?
It WILL sell out and the people that manage to get one will be very happy to have it.
It’s the Pistols so i’ve bought it .
Great addition to the collection .
Why? A totally pointless release. You can easily pick up a 2nd edition – without the misprint in an EMI bag for £25-£30 from a reputable dealer. More authentic and real.
The Sex Pistols were about many things, but “authenticity” wasn’t one of them.
Well I thought the Pistols were pretty authentic in their sense of spirit and integrity considering the flack they were being whipped by from the good old British establishment back then.
They were a highly polished boy band that were dressed up like urchins and programmed to shock, and there’s nothing wrong with that. They were almost as good as The Monkees…
Polished boy band? Dressed up like urchins? Programmed to shock? Almost good as the Monkees? Are you serious?
You don’t seriously think they were anything other than a pop group, do you? So what if they were?
To me they were/are a punkrock group. You probably think that the Sex Pistols, Clash, Damned, Jam, Ramones, Buzzcocks, Generation X, Stranglers etc. were the boy bands. And the Motörhead was all time greatest boy band and Frank Zappa was teen idol!
Edgelord nonsense. If the Pistols were a boy band, so were the Stones. Andrew Loog Oldham was every bit as hands on as McLaren was.
How would the pistols have looked and acted if they’d been managed and dressed by Simon-Napier Bell? Exactly the way HE wanted them to be! It’s a business – the Sex Pistols weren’t an “alternative” to the spectacle, they were part of it.
Authenticity is for hippies.
Fighting the big one in’76 was like Vietnam. You had to be there mark, you had to be there.
Some product
I assume that Mr. Lydon has not authorised this release and will commence ranting shortly.
It’s fully endorsed by the official Pistols’ website. You can buy it off it.
So not by Johnny then. He has nothing to do with the “official” Pistols anymore.
I’m obviously expecting to see a number of ;
“Do you feel cheated?”, “Flogging a dead horse”, “Not what punk was about” “Country Life butter” type posts!
Remember you have not been forced to buy it. Try buying the original for this price…
Are the recordings from the recent remasters? I might get it to replace the old French import version I bought back in the day maaaaaan!
I too have a French import (12″) of this, I got when it came out. But I’ve ordered this as well as I sold a lot of my 7″s years ago and this will be a nice replacement. Probably just a cash in but still one of favourite bands.
£16 for a 7” single, and SOV charge postage on top?! Even with the 10% discount voucher when people sign up, it’s a rip off. Nae chance..
18 quid Inc postage from the pistols site
I bought an original copy of this on black vinyl (the Henry Ford principle still prevailed at that point) in the same black sleeve for 45pence new from the local HMV shop in Churchill Square, Brighton when it was originally released. When I asked if they had it in stock, the assistant looked shiftily around before reaching beneath the desk. ‘Don’t tell anyone about this’ he said ‘we’re supposed to be sending all stock back’ (as the Pistols had just been dumped by EMI). Good of him to let me have one. Long since sold, £15, the current asking price, was my weekly wage back then as a school leaver learning to weld.
Considering the current economic and political climate in the UK this is more than timely.
Although also sadly a clear cash grab.
Just wish there were current bands that could sum up the disenfranchised state we live in, thought Sleaford Mods were OK for a while now the contradictory and “you can’t change anything” monologues are proving that wrong.
Only two real bands left with real anti-establishment venom in this world, that being Killing Joke and Ministry.
I’ve set up Google alerts for Ministry and Killing Joke to let me know when they’ve finished overthrowing the establishment.
That’s funny! I love both bands (or did when they still made good music) but you’re right that neither is causing a revolution anytime soon.
£16 for a 7″ single. It’s what punk was all about.
How much more can this dead horse be flogged?
Still early days…
Wait & see.. plenty of life in the old girl yet. 50th anniversary of GSTQ shortly…
