Wham!, The Beatles, Kate Bush, Soft Cell

Wham! Netflix documentary

A new documentary about Wham! is coming to Netflix, coordinating with the release of the forthcoming best of/box set The Singles: Echoes From The Edge Of Heaven.

I haven’t seen a preview yet myself, but I know a few people who have and I’m assured this is very good indeed; a proper examination which includes unseen footage from The Final and the Whamamerica! tour. There’s also clips of the ‘Everything She Wants’ video in colour, they get into the Wexler Mix of ‘Careless Whisper’ and so on.

The documentary is simply called Wham! and is directed by Chris Smith, the filmmaker whose credits include Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened and Jim & Andy.

Wham! arrives in Netflix on 5 July, preceded by screenings in some UK cinemas the week before. Watch the trailer below!

Paul McCartney clarifies AI Beatles song claim

Just under two weeks ago Paul McCartney claimed ‘AI’ has helped create a new Beatles song. This assertion certainly made headlines for the number of reasons, the first of which was that no one had any idea that a ‘new’ Beatles song was in the making! Also, what did he even mean? Has some ChatGPT-type software synthesised John Lennon’s voice or written some lyrics? It sounded worrying.

As it turned out, it was a typical bit of Macca headline grabbing promotion, mentioned primarily to help promote his 1964: Eyes of the Storm book. The ‘AI’ technology he was referring to had already been used on last years reissue of Revolver. It was an evolution of the imperfect ‘demixing’ technology by dialogue editor Emile de la Rey – from Peter Jackson’s Get Back team – who had apparently developed further the technology to separate voices and instruments that are fused together on a multi-track tape. I attended a Revolver playback session at Abbey Road Studios last year where Giles Martin demonstrated this to me and a small group of journalists. Guitars, bass and drums from ‘Taxman’ where all bounced down to one track and he demixing them on the fly to reveal the purity of the solo instruments. He then went further and with the drums on their own, ‘demixed’ the drum kit removing snare, cymbals until all we heard was one kick drum by itself. It really was incredible.

Anyway, the full story is that way back during The Beatles Anthology era in the mid-90s, having done two ‘new’ Beatles songs for Anthology 1 and Anthology 2 (‘Free As A Bird’ and ‘Real Love’), Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr were due to attempt a third Now and Then for Anthology 3. Except, as Paul told Q Magazine in 1997 “George didn’t like it”, or at least he thought the quality of John’s voice, or the demo in general, was “rubbish”. The usual Beatles ‘reverse democracy’ rule was applied (if one person doesn’t want to go ahead with something it doesn’t happen) and the idea was scrapped.

It’s now almost 30 years later and Paul clearly considers this unfinished business. Technology has progressed enough that he must have persuaded Olivia and Dhani Harrison (and Ringo for that matter) that George probably would have given his blessing if they could use the ‘demixing tools’ at their disposal today.

Two days ago Paul left the following statement on his social media channels:

“Been great to see such an exciting response to our forthcoming Beatles project. No one is more excited than us to be sharing something with you later in the year.

We’ve seen some confusion and speculation about it. Seems to be a lot of guess work out there. Can’t say too much at this stage but to be clear, nothing has been artificially or synthetically created. It’s all real and we all play on it. We cleaned up some existing recordings – a process which has gone on for years.

We hope you love it as much as we do. More news in due course – Paul

The wider question is what does a ‘new’ Beatles song mean for Apple’s Fab Four reissue strategy and Paul’s own Archive Collection releases? A Rubber Soul box set is widely expected later this year and McCartney fans are understandably getting more frustrated at the lack of Macca reissues; next month marks three years since the last Archive Collection reissue (Flaming Pie).

Everything you've always wanted to know about Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill' but were afraid to ask

Kate’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ gets its billionth stream

Kate Bush’s 1985 single ‘Running Up That Hill’ is her first song to receive a billion streams, thanks to its success in 2022 after being used in Netflix’s Stranger Things which resulted in the track topping the charts in eight countries, including the UK for three weeks, Ireland for seven weeks and Australia for nine (non-consecutive) weeks. The song also reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Rhino in America even issued a brand new CD single which was not released anywhere else (bah!). As it turned out, this was the last physical Hounds of Love-related Kate Bush release from Warner Music as world rights for that album are now with The state51 Conspiracy.

Kate posted a rare(ish) message on her website saying she was “blown away” by this news and that the song has been on “an impossibly astonishing journey”.

Soft Cell find lost demos

Soft Cell have posted on social media about how some rare demos have turned up “completely out of nowhere”. As you can see by the image above, these are for their 1983 album The Art of Falling Apart. The band say they were discovered “41 years to the month” in the Universal Music archives. Fans will be hoping these surface at some point in the future on a deluxe edition or box set.

  1. Quite excited about the prospect of the AOFA demos and a possible release in the future, it’s my favourite Soft Cell album.

On a completely unrelated note – The Dead Or Alive boxset of early stuff is out in around a month and I’ve wondered for a while why SDE seems to avoid reporting on DOA releases, such as the Fan The Flame pt.2 release a while back. I’m in no way being snippy or calling anyone out, it’s just plain curiosity as a fan who’s noticed the abscence of reporting on the band’s releases here.

  2. A few thoughts (pipe dreams?) regarding a speculative forthcoming Beatles Anthology project…

    1. Will “Carnival of Light” finally see the light of day?
    2. Will the songs mixed in the early 1980s for the aborted “Sessions” project be re-mixed properly without the dated 1980s effects (especially ‘What’s the New Mary Jane’)?
    3. Will demixing be used on any live material, or, perhaps, material not yet released (Lennon at the 1956 Woolton Village Fete, for example.)

    A fan can dream…

  3. I think there might be a Giles/Sam remix of ‘1962-1966’ and ‘1967-1970’ eventually. The non-album singles and B-Sides that were left off the White Album and Abbey Road deluxe sets must have been omitted for a reason….

  4. What would be great is there was a book of all Wham!’s Smash Hits articles and interviews. Some were insightful (usually George), some were genuinely funny (usually Andy). It would make a great nostalgic read. They could also do ones for Duran, Spandau, The Smiths and others. Morrissey was also wickedly funny in Smash Hits magazine.

  5. The folks at MPL,Lennono, Calderstone, Apple Corps and Universal Music know what Beatles fans want: The “Rubber Soul” box, the McCartney & Wings “London Town” & “Back to The Egg” archive boxes, John Lennon’s “Sometime in New York City” box(or if “Woman is The Ni##er of the World” offends Universal Music executives) then a “Mind Games” box, plus upgrades of the “Beatles Anthology” audio & video releases. These corporations know what the fans want, but they are defiant in their refusal to cooperate. How far they can go in defying the fans and not experience a drop off in sales, remains to be seen.
For collectors of Beatles music, this coming Holiday season looks like a big nothing.

  6. For what it’s worth, I think the ‘week in review’ email you sent us about the ‘new’ Beatles song, speculating that this may be an early indication of a remastered and rebuilt Antholgy project being in the works is spot on. Wishful thinking … of both of us. But educated wishful thinking, I’d like to think!

  7. I don’t understand the “poster” art for the Wham! netflix thing. They did Andrew sooooo wrong. And while I find the color combination very cute, it is most definitely now Wham! It’s Whigfield or Aqua…. anyway I’ll wait it somewhere, seeing as i will not be blackmailed into paying for netflix when my best friend purchased the most expensive sub so she could give accesses to her family and friend only for them to take it away.

  8. Imagine if this MAL demixing technology was used on the Stones legacy? Satisfaction, Paint It Black, 2000 Light Years, Street Fighting Man, Ruby Tuesday and so on. A reissue campaign like that would be enormous.

  9. I think Paul felt he had to clarify because there are so many don’t bother to think knee jerk idiots on social media. Just like the clowns who ‘boycotted’ Pink Floyd for their ‘woke’ ‘Dark Side 50’ logo, the word AI was mentioned and Twitter went divvy. As if the Beatles would put out something substandard.

That said, I hope it’s better than ‘Free As A Bird’. Still sounds like a slow speed ELO to me.

    1. I can’t understand the backlash, surely if people dislike the new idea simply don’t invest in it. But those are the times we are living in where it’s easier to instantly rail against something than accept it for what it is.
I mean with the Beatles if those fans took their purist fandom verbatim they’d still be and only listening to the original mono vinyl releases. It’s the same with Queen, once Freddie passed that for me was the end of the band and I felt no need to see them tour or buy the live releases after that but did it make me vexxed, Hell no and good luck to them in bringing the legacy to a new audience. Life carries on not sure why there is so much angst against artists deciding to try new things…

      1. There is no back-lash. No-one is vexed. There is no angst here. The whole point is that Sir Paul’s AI comment was blown out of all proportion by the media, not by any of the sensible, well informed contributors to this site. The End.

  10. I’d be willing to bet that McCartney pretty much gave up on his reissues. The rest of his solo output is basically dogs dinner. Is anyone really waiting for a lavish box set of “Press To Play” or “Off The Ground” (over a “Rubber Soul” box) to appear any time soon? No. Those albums will be reissued when he dies, when the well is dry. Good grief.

    1. I don’t think it’s an either/or scenario. Let’s face it, in 2018 we got Paul’s new album Egypt Station, a reissue of The Beatles White Album and TWO Archive Collection releases Wild Life and Red Rose Speedway in the same six month period!!

      1. Is it really 5 years ago that we where talking about all the colour configurations of Egypt Station???
Can’t believe how quickly life is flying by!!

    2. ‘The rest of his solo output is basically dogs dinner’, wow so that includes London Town and Back to The Egg? I think LT is a masterpiece and BTTE isn’t far behind. I would take Archives of those two over reissues by any other artist I collect and that includes The Beatles.

    3. I disagree with the derisory evaluation of the unreleased McCartney archive collection. I have always only collected the two-disc versions (principally because I have no interest at all in large photographic books), but even so, I would love to have the reissued London Town, Back To The Egg, Broad Street and Press To Play sets. Yes, even more so than a Rubber Soul box. These albums deserve the same treatment that the rest of the catalogue has had. Anything else makes the whole archive campaign look half-baked and shoddy.
I do agree though that McCartney’s enthusiasm for the archive collection seems to have waned considerably (only one release in four and a half years. SDE actually did a “mid-term report” on the campaign way back in 2014), and this Beatles project, whatever may come of it, is yet another distraction. Likewise his recent 1964 photographic book. What is his obsession with photos?
I have to say that the prospect of another “new” Beatles song based on one of John’s tinny muffled demos (if the other two Anthology tracks are anything to go by), and overdubbed by two octogenarians, frankly leaves me cold. I don’t care what technology they use. They could use Peter Frampton’s talk box, for all I care. At the very least, hopefully Jeff Lynne is not involved this time. No offence to Jeff, ELO were great, but I don’t want the Beatles to sound again like ELO coming out of a Radio1 275/285 MW 1970’s transistor radio.

  11. I’ve not seen any confirmation anywhere that George ever recorded a guitar part on the 1994 recording of Now And Then. I always assumed he’d vetoed it before that stage. Not sure how they’ll get round that, if so.

    1. Wikipedia says the Threetles worked on “Now and Then” for two days before abandoning it, so I’d say it’s likely that all three contributed ideas. Allthough interestingly, none of this work has leaked, unlike the rest of the sessions on the “Meet the Threetles” bootleg.

  12. I, for one, welcome anything new Beatles-related. I remember spending hours watching the video for “Free As A Bird,” trying to decipher all the references in the imagery. Liked “Real Love” a bit better because, I dunno, it just sounded more, um, Beatle-ey to these ears. Can’t wait to hear the “new” track. Bring it on!

  13. Would love a more expanded reissue of ‘The Art Of Falling Apart’ because that was the first album of Soft Cell that i bought, a bit by accident because i was shopping for records shortly after its release and it was so cheap that i thought i’ll give it a try even if i only knew ‘Tainted Love’ by them before.

    No regrets so far.

I bought the expanded cd from 1999 in the meantime and also have the 12′-box on cd and their big career SDE but if they found anything still unreleased lately this could be interesting because this was the period when SC were at the height of their combined abilities imho.

    1. Agreed, although I much prefer This Last Night In Sodom. I’ve never really connected with The Art of Falling Apart for some reason but would welcome anything from the vaults from Marc and Dave. I have all the Deluxes and originals but any SDE would be an instant buy if they included video 4K upgrades – I know, they were probably shot on video * sigh * – and Atmos mixes. There was something uniquely subversive and fun about Soft Cell. True grit and glitter…

  14. As others have said hopefully they will demix the last two Beatles songs so that that ‘tin can’ effect on John’s vocal is gone. I reckon they’ll either demix the whole three Anthology sets, Live at the Star Club or that there’s an ABBA Voyage style stage show in the offing…. Get ready for The Beatles FABATARS! ; )

  15. With the pandemic and the fact that Macca always seems quite busy, you have to wonder what he did in that era to kill time. He did release III but I don’t think that really took a lot of time. There was the supervision of Get back and Revolver [was Let It Be also then?]. Maybe Macca think some of his solo albums don’t deserve a deluxe edition – although I think most here want a Back to the Egg and London Town deluxes. A rumoured Band on the Run can be delayed as there was already been [an “inferior”] one.

  16. Although a card carrying member of the original Beatles fan club (run by “good old Freda” Kelly, you’d think that I would be excited by the announcement that an AI Beatles single is to released. I admit I was looking forward to the previous (Threetles) releases of Free As A Bird and Real Love, but – in hindsight – maybe it would’ve been better if they’d had left their recorded release legacy as it was. So, as before, I’ll be first in line buying this new release, but wish Paul would get back on the case with his Archive Collection, which I’ve also got (including his ‘suitcase’ edition of Egypt Station and George’s ‘Uber’ edition of All Things Must Pass. I’m a fan …… what can I say!

    1. I think most Beatles fans ‘detach’ the later stuff from the ‘canonical’ albums and singles. So I don’t think it does any harm to the legacy, for me it was incredibly exciting to be able to go out and buy a new Beatles single in the mid-90’s because I didn’t get to be able to do that when they were together.

So it’s as exciting now as then and will be for many younger Beatles fans (and many older).

I love ABBA too and don’t particularly rate the VOYAGE album but it was still wonderful to have that release and the show.

Even ‘substandard’ material by great bands can be appreciated and enjoyed. (Star Club?!) any improvements are a welcome bonus.

      :)

  17. I wonder if they have demixed, cleaned up real love and free as a bird as well and planning on some physical release of all 3 songs in some way ? I did enjoy both song, johns vocals were a little muffled at times, looking forward to this new release.
Wham! The first concert I ever attended, club Tropicana tour Whitley bay ice rink :), looking forward to the documentary and hopes of something decent in the way of releases from the archives.

    1. Hi PaulS,
Like you, i too am hoping that Real Love and Free As A Bird have been upgraded and included on this fortcoming release.

  18. Really wish they’d added the TOTEM Remix of RUTH to the Rhino CD. It was a perfect blend of the original and the Stranger Things scores in general and sadly only available in lo-res on Soundcloud and the like.

  19. The problems with the 90s Threetles sessions was that Paul had to walk on eggshells with George as he knew he could scupper the project at any moment, even though George needed the money. So George got his way by having Jeff Lynne making it sound like The Travelling Wilburys and allowing George’s post Beatles solo guitar sound.
At that point in time they could clean up the sound to a point but they couldn’t vary the speed without changing the pitch, technology which arrived a couple of years later. So ‘Free as a bird’ and ‘Real Love’ both sounded dirge-y because they had to go with speed of Johns demos so hopefully they with speed the new song up to give it a bit of momentum.
The other areas of criticisms at the time were that Ringos drumming wasn’t very exciting, hopefully he gets a bit wilder if he’s done recent work.
And finally I hope they go as Beatle-y as hell, chuck in orchestras, backwards tapes, a big sing a-long chorus, get in Yoko and all the kids. Just really go for it!

    1. Is Yoko still able to do something healt wise? In 2021 it was noted that she had withdrawn from public life and Sean is now acting as the public representative in the Beatles business!

      1. It doesn’t have to be in public jarmo. I’m sure she could phone-in something from the comfort of home. I much prefer Graig’s inspired fantasising to your dour nit-pickery. And what is it with that exclamation point?

  20. A bit off topic but I was hoping we might’ve had some news of a Madonna SDE by now given that 27 July is the 40th anniversary of her first album release. I know that album was never guaranteed to be her first release of the SDE campaign but I was hopeful.

  21. Really looking forward to the Wham! documentary. That time has been criminally over-looked and I’m not sure that the upcoming physical releases do it justice. I find this period far more interesting than the GM solo era. There is a still photo shown of George where he looks exactly like he did in the Spandau “Soul Boys of the Western World” documentary. So if they dig to cover things like “The Executive” I will be happy.

I wonder whether it would have been made if George was still with us.

    1. Me too Squire and guess it’ll be a decent doc, I think to be fair to Netflix they offer a decent selection and even though folk slag them off for being “woke” or ticking boxes it can’t be knocked as the cheapest option is only five sovs a month for crying out loud. But onto more pressing matters, is it true Rick Astley has just covered Highway To Hell at Glasters? I’d have forked out for a tickage if I knew that was in the offing…

  22. A couple of nice deluxe releases I’ve received this week which I don’t think has been mention here for anyone looking for hi-res and surround blu-rays. It’s already sold out at Burning Shed.

Blackfield – An Accident of Stars 2004-2017
    https://eclipse-records.co.uk/products/blackfield-an-accident-of-stars-2004-2017

The Pineapple Thief – How Did We Find Our Way 1999 – 2006
    https://eclipse-records.co.uk/products/the-pineapple-thief-how-did-we-find-way-1999-2006?_pos=5&_sid=6019562a9&_ss=r

    1. As i don’t think that Paul is that much into prog rock i usually have other sources to look for new releases in that genre.

I received the Pineapple Thief book (can’t call it a box…) also today in Germany because thoughtfully Burning Shed had sent it out at the start of the week.

I really enjoy the presentation and the fact that absolutely everything included on the cds is also in surround sound on the blu-ray.

To order it was a no brainer because i discovered PT only after the period featured here and came to quite like them since then.

I guess the Blackfield book is made in the same style but as i here literally have almost everything included (from the first album up until ‘For The Music’ from 2020 which isn’t even included in here…) i can’t justify to spend another £80+ just for a nice book and the surround versions of the first three records.

Btw: Am i right that the four bonus tracks added to the debut album haven’t been mixed in surround and aren’t included thus on the blu-ray?

      1. To be honest, I wouldn’t have found these bands without this website and the link to Steven Wilson.

The Blackfield release is in the same earbook style with more photo’s plus interviews.
There’s no bonus tracks on the blu-ray, just hi-res versions of the original albums. Only IV and V are in surround along with Live DNA/New York concert footage in surround. There’s also 5 promo videos.

        1. Hi CDLP,

          and thanks for your reply.

As i own IV and V in their original two disc releases with the surround mixes included on DVD-A (IV) and blu-ray (V) there’s even less here that i haven’t already bought before.

Only the ‘Live DNA’ cd and the videos and hi-res stereo versions of the first three albums and i’m quite certain, having watched release politics by kscope over the years, that this ‘Live DNA’ cd will be released as a standalone disc sometime in the next two years, so i’m gonna wait for that.

I discovered Steven Wilson long before this site was founded but don’t get me wrong i sure am glad that Paul discovered him too some years back leading him to feature most Wilson related releases on his blog.

I appreciate everything i can find here about Steven Wilsons projects and SDEs by Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Marillion, Yes and the likes.
I just wanted to say that there are certainly more informative sites for those seriously interested in prog related music than this one.

There’s of course nothing wrong with that and i enjoy learning more about genres here that i’m not so experienced with.

  23. A Beatles Anthology reissue project might be nice. A box bringing together remastered Anthology 1, 2 and 3. Plus blu ray of documentary, plus accompanying book that came out at the time. Maybe a disc of other takes / mixes that could include the ‘new’ track. Brings everything from that project together rather than 3 fat box cds, a box of dvds and a book all being separate.

    1. Hi AndyBo, that would be excellent. I’ve been waiting for remastered versions of the Anthology albums for ages. If that what you’re suggesting was released, I’d be in. Also, maybe extend the documentary? There must be loads of content that didn’t make the final cut. Also, I know this will be sacrilegious to some, but give us an uber record, cd, bluray and book set. M

    2. Andy Bo, in the normal Beatles way of doing these things, the “Anthology” book came out four years after the cd’s and the dvd set six years after the tv series. So don’t hold your breath. Remember we were promised a revamped version of the “Let It Be” film three years ago and we’re still waiting.

  24. Also The Guardian reviewed the Wham thing and said it wasn’t new it’s all old interviews stitched together, no new input from anyone. Might be good, who knows…

The Kate Bush bit was a lot of non news. We already know Running had reentered the charts a few months ago. Nothing new.

Why aren’t you being more critical of things like the pointless Belinda Carlisle box set that no one needs?
I’m sure you used to me more critical, now you’re just promotion…

    1. I was told it was good by someone who I trust. The Guardian review doesn’t say there is “no new input from anyone” so you are misrepresenting that. I was critical of the Billy Idol reissue just the other day. As for Belinda Carlisle, I am providing a forum where virtually everyone has said they think it’s a waste of time. The message is LOUD AND CLEAR whether I join in or not. Running Up That Hill having reached a billion streams *is* news even if you want to say it isn’t. If you think SDE has gone down hill feel free to not read it rather than leave silly nit-picky comments…

      1. Well the Billy Idol one at least has something added.

Sorry I just didn’t quite understand your point about the Beatles Macca news. I get what you mean now, but that wasn’t clear to start with. Paul felt that need to comment because people were jumping to silly conclusions.

I feel that though this is still a good site, you used to be more critical. I don’t really want to read what other people think, I want to know what you think.
Record companies are putting out all these deluxe editions and I thought it was your point to look at them more critically. And sometimes you don’t. That is all.
Sorry if you feel I’m nitpicking with silly posts.
The reissues and deluxe editions are sometimes things I love but also sometimes overpriced and a waste of time.
I am after a music fan too. I’m just aware of being ripped off. Rsd is another issue but that’s for another post.

          1. How’s that fair? I’m just trying to reply to you. This is your site. Either you want opinions or you don’t…

          2. It’s totally fair. You decided to come up with a petty check list of what you thought was ‘wrong’ with my Saturday deluxe post (and SDE in general). You think these opinions are important enough that I and everyone else should read them. Meanwhile, you are not interested in anyone else’s opinion, as you admit.

          3. We’ll the beatles just wanted to listen to the maharishi and no one else for a week and look how that turned out! Not to mention the Germans in 27 to let’s say 42,,Paul is a musicology expert but opinions vary ,I mean rolling stone said that Bob Dylan Street legal was shut when in fact it is one of his best so other people’s opinions do matter

    2. “I’m sure you used to me more critical, now you’re just promotion…”

and what’s wrong with promotion, isn’t that the whole point of this website to know what new releases are coming to the market?

    3. What’s Paul supposed to say “here is a new Belinda Carlise box set DON’T BUY IT!”.
Surely the point of this site is to alert fans/buyers to new releases and let them decide?
I find the release pointless too but used my brain to decide I don’t need it and certainley don’t need to be shepherded to make the decision.

    4. That’s quite a charge and I don’t agree. I think Paul does a very good job balancing information and comment about the frankly risible release schedules of the record companies with working to improve future release schedules by feeding back with evidence. Let’s hope the appearance of the Blur Blu-ray is proof that they may be beginning to listen…

    5. Re Belinda Carlisle, sorry but you sound like a soon to be ex who just wants to pick a fight over nothing…why be critical when there is no need to be?? It’s kind of neutral, and I have a feeling the whole package, all parts together, will be satisfying in the end…it’s like a new TV series, do you try it & invest your time & stick with it or not?? Me, I will cuz it looks nice & better than the older 7CD album box…and as for TV seties’, remember Lost?? I got into it, stuck with it to the end, but that finale made me extremely angry & regretful I invested all that time & energy, but overall, otherwise, the show was pretty cool…

  25. “It was an evolution of the imperfect ‘demixing’ technology” What do you mean by imperfect?
Sometimes your point is lost by bad editing!

And also it was fairly obvious that no he didn’t mean it was AI created, that he’d just used it to separate John’s voice from piano. One of the better reports said that.

    Am looking forward to it.

    1. I mean Giles Martin had said on a number of occasions that the so-called ‘demixing’ technology wasn’t good enough to tackle things like Revolver. Not until Peter Jackson’s team took it to the next level as part of the work on Get Back. BTW if it was so obvious why did Paul feel the need to clarify his statement?

  26. Well I, for one, am really looking forward to another “new” Beatles release and in answer to Remi, YES, I loved Free As A Bird and also Real Love…both good songs tinged with emotion. That, plus a proposed SDE of Rubber Soul this year….looking good for 2023!

  27. How dare you mention Kate Bush and it not be news of a news of a new release. Got my hopes up. Looking forward to the Wham documentary.

    1. Kate mentioned a few months ago that there would be vinyl and CD reissues of Hounds of Love this year, but whether this means anything other than coloured vinyl and picture disc remains to be seen. A CD reissue would be pointless unless it contains something previously unavailable on the format (it was only remastered and repackaged in 2018, with most of its b-sides and alternative mixes on The Other Sides).

      1. If Hounds came out in mediabook edition with 3 discs (a remaster of the videos with commentary maybe?), a second disc with all the b-sides and all the various mixes from back then (wasn’t there a video edit for Cloudbusting? not sure), and a brand new interview with Kate for the liner notes, I’d be there in a shot. While for me, The Kick Inside and Lionheart have always tied in first place as her very best work, Hounds is a landmark album, and inarguably her most successful. It deserves it.

        1. Yes, there was a long video version of Cloudbusting that was only ever released on one of the CD singles of The Red Shoes, I think it was.

    1. Yup, would definitely welcome dedicated deluxe reissues of the early Soft Cell albums, releases that improve upon the previous now out-of-print reissues – particularly the single disc 1998 versions of Falling Apart & Sodom, which can hopefully be expanded into nice double disc sets…

    1. I mostly enjoyed it but had some critiques of the production but when I heard Adrian Belew’s live performance of it on BelewPrints I realized that it was, in fact, a beautiful composition. I wish John had lived long enough to record a proper version.

    2. Both it and real love sounded like George’s Revenge to me and should be completely re-worked from scratch, because the bones of two great songs are obviously there. Keep Jeff Lynne away from the project and l will buy it in as many variants as they wish to contrive. ( l probably should mention that l am otherwise a big Jeff Lynne and ELO fan.)

  28. It was clear from the beginning that the Beatles would not be synthetically revived. But the headlines were confusing. The BBC revealed that the song in question was “Now and then”, but who really knows ?
