Sex Pistols / Pretty Vacant 7″ red vinyl
Limited and numbered seven-inch
The Sex Pistols third single, ‘Pretty Vacant’, is being made available on coloured vinyl for the first time, for another limited production run.
Back in July 1977, this release followed ‘God Save The Queen’ into the UK top 10 and saw the band perform on Top of the Pops for the first time. The single features a cover of The Stooges ‘No Fun’ on the B-side
The single reissue replicates Jamie Reid’s (RIP) iconic UK artwork and there will be 4577 copies of this limited edition pressed on red vinyl. They are all numbered.
Pretty Vacant will be released – via D2C (Direct to Consumer) only – on 29 September 2023 via Universal Music Recordings

I take great comfort that there is a market for this product, it looks nice to me and reasonably priced for limited edition colour vinyl. I was buying and selling rare vinyls at record fairs and through record collector classifieds in the 80s for similar amounts. I will pass on this as my music preferences have changed since I bought my NMTB picture disc from a chap on a pier in Weymouth but I guess the point is, many of us don’t probably go to record fairs as often as we once did and we access the purchases differently (and don’t get to haggle) but it’s good to see new product and hopefully bring the music to new collectors as well as existing fans. Keep up the fantastic work on the site Paul all the best
Stop bloody moanin’ ‘n’ groaning’ people this was a band that had more tunes, originality, ideas than those over-rated nob heads from Liverpool & were virtuoso’s when playing their instruments not to mention John-Ee Rot-ten’s beautiful vocals.
I think I’ll turn comments off for the next Sex Pistols single since people have literally just repeated what they said about the last couple.
Ooooo there’s more ? I’m in again
What do you expect?! At least nobody said “ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” (yet)
People don’t have to make the same points repeatedly is all I’m saying.
I thought that the over- rated know heads where from Manchester or maybe Ireland and I don’t mean the boomtown rats a fabulous band who have sadly never had any love in the last 40 years! I urge all readers to play diamond smiles today just to remind you how great they where!!
I remember diamond smiles! (La La La, La La La, La La La, etc.)
I’d hazard a guess the general public kinda fell out of love with Geldof after Band Aid which many see as his last good cause/effort. Ever since then and long before social networking he had a habit of putting foot in mouth and hasn’t stopped since…
The rats where past their sell buy date before live aid ,in fact they where finished the minute gerry cott left,I’m talking troops ,surfacing!
I remember having a discussion with you John a while back, regarding the Boomtown Rats and Joy Division. Always meant to say that, contrary to what might have been possibly portrayed at he time, that I actually have a lot of time for Geldolf & Co, even though the only thing I own is a Hold Me Now 12″. Having said that, and knowing most of their singles, I don’t think I’ve ever heard one that I didn’t like. Geldolf was also a great front man in his day. I suspect that if Band Aid/Live Aid had never happened, they would get a lot more appreciation.
I need to start listening to some of their albums.
Fair play to you for fighting their corner.
Thanks Stan I do remember that conversation, I still can’t get Into joy division, but we all can’t like the same thing all the time ,hope your well mate
Dear John. I too have great respect for the psychological concept of Readiness, however, may l recommend that when you next have a go at JD you start with “Ice Age” and “Walked in Line” they are both astonishingly good and can be approached as just a couple of punk rock songs ( l know that is sacrilegious), rather than having to carry the huge weight of being JOY DIVISION SONGS, like say, “Decades” or “Digital” or “Atmosphere “ (which is the greatest song in the world ever) do. If all else fails just play “Transmission“ again. I realise that you are one who knows their onions John so please do not think the ravings of this aging fan-boy too impertinent.
Cheers, John. Spent this evening listening to the Rats. Tonic For the Troops and Fine Art of Surfacing were very enjoyable. Something certainly went awry with Mondo Bongo. Apart from the two big singles, it’s a bit all over the shop. Not helped though on the version I listened to, by a heavily compressed remaster.
Never in a million years from v deep is a absolute classic Stan, thanks for taking the time a day spreading the word! Also venom thank you for your kind words also!
It was a tongue in cheek comment John, the nob heads I referred to don’t exist. Just a reaction to the same old moans and groans whenever anything with a price tag is released.
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BUY THE FECKIN’ THINGS!
Brilliant
Bought all of them so far, I find it ironic if this was Prince or Duran Duran nobody would be whinging!
I like Duran, Prince *and* The Pistols. I’m not in the market for this release any more than I would a 15 quid 7″ of ‘Rio’ or ‘Kiss’ – to me these are just manufactured collectibles made purely because completists will have to add it to their collection (nothing wrong with being a collector but even the most diehard Pistols fan must see that’s a bit cynical on the part of the record label). 4,577 copies must surely make it one of the least scarce 7″ singles of recent times too.
We’re so petty, oh so petty
The price is a joke. I can get a brand new reissued 180g New Order 12′ for less than that. I wonder what McLaren would think about his old cash cow still being milked?
My sister had the original issue, but unfortunately it got stolen by a lad from school, who asked to have a listen as he was a fan, but hadn’t heard this apparently. I know it was you, Steven Neild! I’d have probably bought this to replace that copy, but as my sister is no longer with us, it just wouldn’t be the same. It’s a pass from me, but I didn’t mind this track!
Yep. Count me out too, I’ve bought every Sex Pistols 7’’ coloured singles before, and every one was damaged in some way, because no matter what official site I bought them from, they arrived in thin card envelopes and in the case of one… a thin card envelope taped to a poster tube!
£15.99 for a 7″ single! Back in ’77 you could of probably bought near on 15 singles for the price of that one. ‘Nuff said.
In 1977 a 7″ single was around 65-70p, so at least 20 singles. The b-side, No Fun, is perhaps Johnny Rotten’s finest moment. The pain and anger in his vocals. The copy I bought at the time had the labels on the wrong sides.
It wouldn’t be 20 singles because 70p in 1977 is worth about £6 now. So two and a bit singles.
I’m in !
As the Holidays in the Sun didn’t sell out on their website I’m fairly sure this one won’t either so it will no longer be a D2C and be available elsewhere – probably 3 days after release. At least from other outlets you can ensure it will be sent in a proper mailer unlike the flimsy card Universal use for 7 inch vinyl. They use the proper outsize mailers for LPs so why the useless flimsy card for singles? Townsend all use great packaging for their artists stores’ LPs too but they send CDs out in thin jiffy bags with no stiffening card. You could get away with this with the old jewel cases but nearly all CDs are issued in card these days, which will get damaged in transit in these jiffy bags. And they charge £3 postage for the privilege.
The red vinyl for Pretty Vacant is very unimaginative – there is no red in the artwork and they already used red vinyl for Anarchy in the UK. So 4 colour vinyl single reissues – and 2 are red…. Grey would have been appropriate for Pretty Vacant.
I think the attraction is waning on these releases.
The A&M God Save The Queen replica sold out almost immediately (1977 copies produced). The “error pressing” version (another 1977 copies) also sold out quickly.
Holidays on Yellow vinyl didn’t get many orders at all (4577 copies produced), so they ending up releasing it to indie stores as well (rather than the website exclusive it originally claimed to be). It is still widely available and on SOV/ Recordstore sites. Considering that only 4577 were produced, that indicates that the market for these is getting oh so pretty…… small.
In fact, looking at the large amounts sitting on Ebay etc, it looks as though many were purchased by speculators purely for resale.
I bought the God Save The Queens but no others. I bought them as something interesting to have as a younger version of me always wanted to own a copy. I haven’t broken the shrink wrap and probably never will.
I wonder how many of these will actually get played.
The French Glitterbest singles, 7″ & 12″ would make a great box set.
I’m wavering as Sound Of Vinyl sent out the previous Sex Pistols coloured vinyl 7″s in a thin card envelope with zero protection. By complete luck they arrived with me in pretty much perfect shape, but could I be so lucky again? They must be getting so many complaints about bent & damaged records : (
Like Holidays, I expect this will be available from other outlets in a few weeks…
It’s disappointing that the numbering is a sticker on the shrink wrap, they could at least make an effort to number the sleeves.
I got Anarchy & Holidays but I think this will probably be a pass. I still have my original which sounds fine
How much more life is there in this for the band?
How much more life is there in the endless David Bowie rereleases?
Ordered. Wonder if this the last one or will we get No One is Innocent?
I have too, i think they’re great and for all you whingers and whiners who have NO LIFE at all, it’s my money and i can spend it on what the hell i like!
That poor horse’s corspe reanimated and flogged again in the name and spirit of punk.
YYYAAAWWWNNN didn’t realise people were being forced to buy these singles
I like your earlier, funnier posts Lord F.
