  1. I think it hasn’t been mentioned here: the super deluxe editions of Fish (former Marillion frontman) of his first two albums (Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors and Internal Exile) are available from his website since last week. 4CD + BR sets in a book format with slipcase with a lengthy essay and plenty of images. There are also vinyl editions and abridged 3CD editions in digibook format.

    1. These are beautiful and the surround mixes are really good, shows that Avril and McIntosh learnt from their mistakes.
The big issue for me are the stereo live shows on the Blu-ray, which are in poor Dolby Digital format.. PCM is free format as far as I know, so why such a poor audio format for the stereo content on the Blu-ray?

    2. I am pleased that someone else remembers Fish!

His recent reissues of his first two solo albums, as mentioned above, are excellent in the two formats I have bought. I got the 3CD sets to complete my collection – the quality of the set is as impressive as the previous reissues, and the content, spread across three CDs, is a good primer for those less familiar with Fish’s solo work. Highly recommended.

The two 4CD & Blu-Ray box sets are fantastic. If you got the “13th Star”, “Weltschmerz” or “Feast of Consequences” sets then the quality of the packaging will not be a surprise – not just excellent, but probably the best out there for any reissue I have bought. The content is superb, both in sound quality and the selection provided over four CDs (in each set). The curation of the content is excellent, with a great range and diversity of content on both sets. “Vigil” is, in my opinion, the stronger set but “Exile’s” comparative unevenness has its own charm. But the Blu-Ray is where this really shines, like previous live releases from Fish. The breadth and quality of content are excellent and so too is the sound and vision on the BR discs for each set – the BR is not really “bonus” content but would be a bona fide high quality release on its own. (Regarding the comment below about the BD live content sound, I didn’t find any issues, but then I have quite an old set-up which handles this format well? I don’t know, but no issues from me, but point taken about PCM).

A great end (?) to Fish’s reissue campaign, and these releases and the tour will be a great way to see him off into retirement. But maybe a live release from the tour and a greatest hits (particularly relevant given the quality of the last three albums) would be a nice finish.

Also, as a bonus, look out for the WAV-quality downloads of the seven radio edits of singles associated with the “Vigil” and “Exile” reissues. A nice bonus, and a nice way to sample the superb sound quality of these releases. A final picture disc would be nice……

A 10/10 for the Vigil 4CD/BR reissue, and 9/10 for the Exile box set. I really do wish the wider music press would pick up these reissues and publicise them a bit more.
