Duran Duran Danse Macabre SDE blu-ray update

Two bits of news

I just wanted to give everyone an update on the SDE-exclusive blu-ray of Duran Duran’s Danse Macabre De Luxe that sold out so quickly over the weekend.

First off, I appreciate the feedback around the numbering which some of you left, and I agree that it’s a good idea to number this blu-ray as ’13a’ in the series (rather than ’29’ which was as announced). This has now been changed. The original number was ’13’ so it can therefore sit next to the original if you happen to have bought last year’s edition but if you do not want to purchase the De Luxe version of Danse Macabre there will not be a gap in your sequence. The next blu-ray to be announced will be #29.

Secondly, because it sold out so quickly that has allowed us to adjust production quantities at the very last minute. We will now do a run of 2,000 units, 500 more than originally intended. These are available now, but please observe a limit of one copy per customer, and no repeat orders, if you’ve already secured your copy. Thank you!

Danse Macabre De Luxe blu-ray will be released on 25 October 2024, via SDE Records. Order only from the SDE shop using this link or the button below. Full product details on the original post.

  1. Received the Bluray last week. Very pleased. One remark though. I’ve dissected the contents with my audiophile ears. I noticed an inconsistency on the instrumentals : The three bonus tracks are mastered differently than the rest. The bonus tracks are about 6dB quieter which means only half as loud as the rest. There’s also a small fraction of the lead vocal left on Bury a Friend at around 1’12” into the instrumental version of the track. It sounds very erratic. Goes to show that nobody’s perfect and that Bob Clearmountain, although a genius, is also human. I’m assuming he also provided the instrumentals. I’ve managed to correct this error after extracting the tracks from the Bluray. And replaygain also takes care of the difference in volume when playing the tracks on from the computer. But still….

  2. As soon as I saw and knew that a new version of the excellent last opus of Duran Duran was going to be released again (a first anniversary ? What to think of the next anniversaries ? ^^) and in addition Tears For Fears was going to release on the same date a live album (with some studio tracks), I told myself that Christmas was approaching at a forced march. If the albums are not refused, we had the equivalent in exclusive audio blu-ray (and some videos concerning Danse Macabre De Luxe). Why should we refuse these nuggets ?!?
Also I want to say it warmly :”Merci beaucoup !!!” to Paul Sinclair – I’m french! – and all his team for the job done, because it is worth it ! In addition, you take care of your products right down to the smallest details (like the numbering of the blu-rays), you are professionals and that is why we love you !

  3. I would like to order this, but I just ordered the Tears For fears title announced one day before. Is there a way to not pay the 10 pounds shipping to Germany again?
    It’s the same release day.

    1. I found myself in the same situation on Friday, clearly having jumped too quickly Thursday on Songs for a Nervous Planet and not wanting to pay a second full shipping charge ordering the Duran blu-ray separately. (I’ll have to remember to be a little less trigger-happy in the future when afforded the luxury of a ten-day pre-order window.) I emailed [email protected] requesting a cancellation of my original order, which was promptly refunded, and then placed my new order for both blu-rays.

Hurry, though! I doubt those 500 extra copies of Danse Macabre De Luxe are going to last much longer!

          1. Yes, although it might be a bit more than the normal one blu-ray shipping cost because of the weight (but still better than 2 x normal).

          2. You’re making me very curious now, can you give us a little hint which band or artist(s) are no. 29 and 30 in the fantastic SDE Blu-ray series

          3. Steven Wilson confirmed that he’d completed work on an Atmos mix of FGTH’s Pleasuredome so I’d wager that might be one of them (Paul had a Pleasuredome poster in one of his update videos a month or two back, which may or may not have been a cheeky hint!)

SW also confirmed he’d worked on an Atmos mix for Tears For Fears’ Seeds Of Love, which would seem to be the perfect candidate for an SDE release (but likely too soon after the Live album announcement)?

  4. Bands are often criticized for re-doing their older songs, like U2 and Sting. If they all re-do their old songs like Duran does them, there wouldn’t be so much criticism. New Moon (Dark Phase) is fantastic and so are the other re-do’s on this album. New Moon On Monday has always been a bit of an under appreciated classic I feel, so I’m glad they picked that song for a re-do. Even though I already own the original blu-Ray I gladly bought this deluxe version. A great album has just been made even greater.

  5. Ok, I give up…I was going to skip this one, but seeing that you went to the trouble to make an extra 500, it would be rude to not pick this up, it is a shame that they did not allow you to include the extra vinyl tracks, this is still really the best set out there for this record. Thanks Paul. I remember the moaning that occurred when the Tipping Point got re-pressed. There was even talk of extras that could have been included, but were ultimately omitted. I’m glad to see that in this round you did include something different here from last year’s issue.

  6. It’s quality that the new tracks are introduced into the running order not just bunged at the end (or on a second disc) like other artists do. Keeps it interesting.

  7. I agree with the numbering 13a but a question buzzes in my head: will it still have the SDE’s collectible slipcase? Also, if the answer is yes, I keep wondering if, in the future, it would be possible to add the slipcase to the George Harrison bluray, in which the situation seems to be very similar.
    Thanks in advance Paul.

    1. I think you can find the answer in the listing in SDE shop. The slipcase is included.

The George Harrison blu-ray is something else. If I remember correct SDE was not allowed to add a slipcase for that one.

      1. Yes, correct… reading this latest news quickly I lost this info that is correctly listed in the bluray information.
About Harrison my hope is that it can come true sooner or later.

  8. Hi Paul:

It’s probably too late. Still, would it be possible for them to add the stereo versions of the 3LP bonus tracks to the Blu-ray? This would make the matter of having to double dip on this release a better value.

Thanks for all the hard work.

    Sincerely,

    Mike

PS: Any remote possibility of a Thomas Dolby The Flat Earth 40th in (Thomas) Dolby Atmos⁉️

  9. Yep great solution…being I preordered the De Luxe, now I can trade the original without having any gaps…I’m going to try to snag a ticket to their Halloween show at NYC’s MSG & see if anyone there wants to take the original off my hands, and if they have any copies of the vinyl box for sale in the merch…DD always put on a great show but this 10/31 gig will likely be something special…

    1. Hey Larry, the vinyl box is released in November so I doubt they will sell it as merch. You may see me at the concert, as I’m also hoping to go. Cheers!

  10. Didn’t think it would sell out this quick. Since I already own the first Blu-ray Audio took the weekend to think if I wanted the second edition. Wanted to order it this afternoon, but it was already sold out! Two hours later received an e-mail that it was available again. Ordered it together with the Tears for Fears Blu-ray Audio.

  11. Hi Paul,

It totally makes sense to keep the core of a catalogue number and expand or alter it, when a new version of the same body of work gets released. It is what record labels have done for ages, after all!

Now, as for how to extend the catalogue number of SDE’s release, I am not sure that “a” is sexy enough, perhaps due to the fact that it has no particular meaning

…Looking at my favorite records labels, I can see that added letters and figures have usually a meaning, e.g.:
X – for eXtra, eXtended, eXpanded
    R – for Remix, Reissue
    L – for Limited
DL – for De Luxe (or DownLoad, unfortunately!)
    .2 or -2 , for second

    What do you think?

        1. We need an updated version of No Parlez since the 7 mixes are not enough. Lol. Just kidding. I love this album by Duran Duran. Sounds like a swan song, though. Hopefully I am wrong.

  12. Nice one Paul, I was lucky enough to get one of the first 1,500 and am pleased for those who missed out. The 13a Idea is a good one as well. The only anomaly now Is George Harrison. I get that it is 6.5, which would be cool if they had allowed you to make a cover. So it sits at the end of the row, slightly under-dressed.

    Quiet Life next please……..

    1. Well now being the only missing piece for me is the Concert for George, if you have a second copy, I’m willing to trade my copy of the original DD #13 for it…this De Luxe is now able to replace it, the “a” is almost like a new 2nd edition…let me know…one idea is trade it at their Halloween concert at MSG in NYC…on Friday I’m going to the box office to take a crack at it…

  13. Fantastic news! Ordered! It is so refreshing to have an environment where the members/customers have a voice and are taken care of. Thanks for creating this community Paul, much appreciated!

  14. A little off topic but just to say the 5.1 mix folds down into a gloriously dynamic stereo mix.

I only listen in stereo but the 5.1 fold down to stereo is the superior stereo mix for me.

  15. Wasnt going to bother as have the original SDE release but seeing as you are offering up more I have taken the plunge. Cheers Paul for listening to feedback and adjusting. I guess you just cant tell what will sell the quantities and which wont judging by some of the older releases still available from your store. Primed for #29 :)
