SDE in the USA this week!
The Big Apple and Vegas beckon
I’m delighted to announce that I’ll be heading of to America tomorrow, to catch what should be two fantastic concerts with artists that we have worked with very recently.
I’ll be in New York City on Thursday for Duran Duran’s Halloween-themed Madison Square Garden show as the band celebrate the ‘De Luxe’ edition of their Danse Macabre album which was released only last Friday, with the sold out blu-ray available during the pre-order window via SDE Records.
Then, on Friday morning, I head to Las Vegas to take in the last show (Saturday night) in Tears For Fears‘ three-night residency in the Fontainebleau resort hotel. The band are celebrating the release of their well received Songs For A Nervous Planet live album, which also features four brand new studio tracks. Again, this was issued on blu-ray audio as part of the SDE Surround Series (currently a few left).
Longtime SDE readers will recall my trip to America in 2015. I look back on that excursion very fondly and while there may not be as much time to go record shopping (many of the shops featured then have now closed down, sadly), I will do my best!!
There will be SDE diary updates on this site, keeping you abreast of activity, but for those of you that ‘do’ social media, I’d strongly advise following the SDE Instagram feed, because I’m planning lots of posting on that forum, for the duration of the trip. Photos, maybe the odd video, and hopefully some surprises, as I travel from London to NYC to Vegas and back home again!
If you are going to either show, or live in either city, Iet me know. It’s going to be a whirlwind trip, but it would be cool to have a beer with any Stateside SDE readers, should time/schedules allow.
Paul

Sounds great Paul.
How about visiting Australia next when a SDE fave is touring!
We would give you a super deluxe welcome.
Have a great time. I’m jealous of both, especially TFF in Vegas. Make sure you fly out by Tuesday, when all hell may break loose in these parts. To use an apt quote, “It’s a very, very mad world.”
Thanks, yes coming back on the red eye on Sunday night… ‘just in time’!
Great, just in time for “Out This Week”!
Have a great trip. Enjoy the shows.
Will have to make do with my superb TFF SDE Blu-ray and 2CD, and hope that someday, the show shown in cinemas makes it to 4K Blu-ray with the Atmos soundtrack.
Cheers Derek
I really wonder about how they would handle the soundtrack if they release the film on disc. My fear is that it’ll be the underwhelming cinema mix, which would make the Wilson version confined to the SDE audio-only disc.
Have a great time while you’re here in the U.S., Paul. The Halloween show should be an absolute madhouse.
I have to admit that I totally overlooked the reference to “SDE Records” in both the Danse Macabre De Luxe announcement and update posts. But watching as the blu-ray loaded in my player, it was hard to ignore that logo, and now you’ve mentioned SDE Records again in this post.
First order of business: CONGRATULATIONS, PAUL!!! Wow, you now head a record label?!?!? That’s insanely cool. And what a milestone — a testament to 13 1/2 years of hard work and the fantastic community you’ve built from the ground up.
Secondly, though, I’m interested in knowing the reason(s) for establishing the label, what it now allows you to do, and what your plans are for its future. Would love to see a post on the site formally introducing SDE Records and providing a glimpse into what’s been going on behind the scenes leading to this momentous occasion.
Safe travels!
Thanks eogan and yes, I will have a little bit more to say about SDE Records, soon. Even though I’m head of a record label, I hope it will be a while before I’m asking “which one’s Pink?” ;)
How spooky – I’m currently listening to the Wish You Were Here album and “Have a Cigar” has just played!
Have a great trip Paul :)
Rats!
I live about an hour from Madison Square Garden & would have loved to buy you a beer!
As I write this I am in Newark Airport heading out of town through the weekend…bad timing!
Enjoy both shows – they sound fantastic.
Not sure how long you are in the NYC area, but if you have time, try to get to the Princeton Record Exchange – one of the last great record stores around – just a short walk from the historic University (great restaurants, too!)
Shame! Unfortunately it’s a very brief visit to NYC so not going to be able to make it out to Princeton Record Exchange which I only hear great things about!
Safe travels, Paul! If you ever make it down to Florida (or ever take the family to Disney World) would love to treat you to a drink or meal. I could introduce you to a few great used book stores but am still searching for that elusive magical used record store.
Thanks Erik… what a kind offer. Love Florida and may be back at some point :)
Not going to hang around for the election Paul? ;-)
“Sadly” not…
Hello Paul. Long time reader and lifelong NYC local old enough to be an OG fan of the sweet spot 80s bands you also love. For record hunting in New York, Runner and Generation in the West Village are fine, well organized but don’t expect bargains. If you like shopping Flashback in London, as I do along with Sister Ray and Reckless (still!), for a well priced surprise you should definitely go to the Academy on 12th and A-1 on 6th both close to each other in the East Village. If you have time for a trip into hipster Brooklyn, Human Head and Brooklyn Record Exchange in Bushwick are bargain hunters faves with hit and miss results but the hits keep me coming back. If you do make that trek, Roberta’s Pizza lives up to the hype but I like Ops even more! Have an amazing trip. Hope the shows are great!! And tell Curt not to be so hard on himself about Watch Me Bleed (my wife’s favorite TFF song he also once told her he can’t relate to anymore :)
Thank you!! Here now and definitely going to Academy and A-1. Really enjoyed Brooklyn back in 2015 but not sure I’ll make it out there this time.
MAGA Paul/SDE!
Hey Paul…I’ll be at the Duran Duran MSG show on Thursday/Halloween…besides the show itself, are you going to be at the merch booth or just walking around/mingling?? I’ll gladly have a beer with you again…I wonder if Kawgompie is going?? Last meeting (2015, sheesh 9 years ago, time flies) was big fun…besides Record Runner & Rough Trade, there is Generation Records on Thompson Street in the Village & Academy on 18th Street & Bleeker Street Records (its cool but usually a mess)…I think Rebel Rebel closed though, there is Rock & Soul on 37th Street (b/w 5th & 6th) & Book Off, on 45th Street, a Japanese store with lots of gems & Japanese imports…let me know where you will be & what time…
Hey Larry, I’m at the show too!! We should meet before. 9 years ago, holy cow time flies!!
I used to go to Book Off all the time. Then they moved and had a lot fewer imports. Not so interesting anymore so I stopped going. Is it back being interesting again? I gotta check it out then. They used to ship used CD’s with Obi’s from Japan to Book Off, super cheap but I thought they stopped doing that as I didn’t see anything good anymore. Last time I was there is years ago.
Hey, long time no see, wow 9 years!! even before those cruises changed my life in 2019…not suree what time i’ll be getting to the Garden, but respond with a time & where at MSG you will be…my phone is screwed up with internal damage after a fall, so cannot text…sucks…getting a new phone Friday…this is from my laptop at home before bed…will be great to catch up…bringing my copy of the original Danse Macabre to the show in case there is a willing buyer, don’t need it as I got the new improved De Luxe…
Well Jel and really hoping TFF might resume live activity in the UK next year. Duran must perform an exorcism at Madison Square due to it’s recent occupants – Out Demons Out!
Indeed! Be gone, evil spirit!
Haha!! Couldn’t agree more!!
Paul, When in New York, you should have dinner at the vinyl steakhouse. It’s a very good steakhouse that features a vinyl collection.
They play whole sides or even whole albums.
I’m going to be at the Duran Duran show at MSG (of course!). Would be cool to see you if possible . . .
Hey Paul! We are traveling to Las Vegas too this weekend, from Salt Lake City. Going to see Tears For Fears perform on Friday night! So stoked. I saw them on the “Seeds of Love” tour back in 1990, during my senior year of high school. Even wrote a review for the school newspaper! Lol. I’m sure you have a full itinerary, but if you have time, I’d love to meet you in person while you’re stateside for brunch or a drink! = )
Have a joyous trip Paul!
I hope you somehow get to see The Eagles in LV without paying Ticketbastard’s outrageous rates & fees.
I’m just glad to see that Taylor Swift’s fans have stirred things up about this monopoly in Washington.
Don’t forget to set your watch or alarm Saturday night/Sunday morning at 2am back an hour to reflect US standard time.
Paul, how much are the concert tickets in the US? Just curious, I bet Ticketmaster is scalping people left and right…
I have been lucky enough to get complimentary tickets for both shows! I know Eagles at the Sphere is well north of $500
Ouch, and to watch Don Henley lip synch
Original price on the Fontainebleau tix was about US$150, with all fees included. I bought one for Friday and one for Saturday :) Predictably, they’re on the resale market now for 2x or 3x that. Whether they sell is another matter.
To be honest, the TFF ticket price is fair market value. I’ve also dropped US$140 for the U2 show at Sphere on Sunday afternoon… and it’s just a movie! Albeit a technological tour-de-force of a movie. Still, somewhat less value there.
me, I got my Duran ticket I think end of September, on StubHub via Ticketmaster, for $91 and with fees I paid $118…but prices skyrocketed since…
Viva Las Vegas!
I remember that massive Virgin Megastore in Times Square where there were listening posts for the Top 100 albums or something crazy like that! I bought the 3rd Portishead album there & qualified for a free t shirt! Bought “Medazzaland” CD there too a few weeks after it came out.
Those were the days!
there were 2 Virgin Megastores in the city…the Times Square one & also Union Square…they were amazing times yes, but prices were really high…its when I discovered used CD stores & finding promos of new releases dirt cheap…changed my buying habits dead quick!! All before the vinyl revival!! And Tower 4th & Broadway & Other Music!!
Loved your recent euro record fair diaries so looking forward to this US one. Safe travels and have a great time!
Cheers Michael!
You lucky Bar-Steward Paul!
I think the DD mini East Coast tour seems to be a success. Baltimore the other night had the top tier curtained off but apart from that, strong ticket sales. This is their 3rd Yank outing in recent years so maybe the punters are a bit weary now. MSG Should be an epic Historical show!!
They’ve also just announced a show for the 30th December at the same place TFF are playing so maybe if that sells out fast they will add another show for NYE. Gotta bring home the bacon…
Plenty of pictures pur-lease & of the Merchandise available!!
I remember your blog of NY Record shops!! very interesting. Not jealous at all!
Have a great time!!!!
Thanks so much, Burt. Yep, photos aplenty coming…
If you’re staying in Manhattan, I hope you have a chance to visit Rough Trade at Rockefeller Center. Lots of signed vinyl and a very knowledgeable staff. Enjoy your trip, Paul!
that Rough Trade is just OK if I’m honest, compared to the original, much-missed, much-bigger, Williamsburg, Brooklyn store…that place frankly ruled despite the sky-high prices…they had a concert venue in the back & everything…the current store is too small…
Have a safe trip to the States, Paul. The Duran Duran show at the Garden should be EPIC and goodness knows the Big Apple needs a little good cheer with the Yankees being down 3 to nil to my Los Angeles Dodgers in the Worls Series! And beware of the grumpy American football team’s NY Jets and Giants fans as their collective seasons are already OVER and the season is NOT even at the halfway point yet! Vegas is Vegas but a fine time looks to be had at the Tears for Fears show. Cheers!
Have fun and enjoy the shows, Paul! If you ever get up to Seattle I’ll take you somewhere for some Seattle beers!
Lovely offer, thanks! Seattle is one place I haven’t been, but hope to correct that one of these days!
was in Seattle once back in 1996 on a Pacific NW trip along with Portland & Astoria, OR (Goonies!!) & Vancouver, BC, Canada…killer trip…fave place I discovered?? Ivar’s fish shack…killer chowder!! great coffee at Pike’s Market (did I get the names right??)…and even found Kurt Cobain’s house before it came down…
Safe travels Paul & have a great time at the shows. You’re welcome here anytime. If you ever make it to Chicago, would LOVE to connect!
Many thanks!
Paul I lived in Las Vegas for 13 years. I recommend Record City (Sahara Store) and Zia RECORDS. Check on Zia to ensure they are open, both stores are a 15 minute Uber ride from the Strip.
This is great info – thanks!
Zia is a fun little southwestern indie chain. Somewhat akin to Fopp in the UK, in terms of what they stock and how they carry on business. I’m hoping to get to one of the Zia locations in Vegas this weekend… time permitting!
they have Zia in Vegas?? Only been to Zia in Tempe, AZ…cool its a chain…great store in Tempe…
Come to Los Angeles!
Have a great trip, Paul! I saw Duran Duran last Friday and they sounded great, though the missus wasn’t too keen on the new Halloween-themed tracks (she’s more of an ‘80’s “Rio” gal, but there was plenty of that too!). If time permits in Vegas it may be worth checking out one of the films at Sphere, to see first hand what all the fuss is about!
Considered going to see the Eagles on Friday but even ‘mates rates’ tickets are $450 each!!
Don Henley needs a new Rolls Royce.
$450? Ouch. You mentioned you’re on the red-eye on Sunday, Paul. But if you’ve got time (and money) to kill the U2 film is showing at Sphere at 4:30 pm Sunday.
Hope to see you at Fontainebleau! I’ll be the dopey middle-aged Canadian bloke who awkwardly introduces himself to you as “Stefan” in real life :)
Have a great trip. Sad how few record stores are left in this area, but hopefully You’ll find one or two to visit.
Hi Paul – nyc local here. I hope you make it to Record Runner in the village. It’s a great hole in the wall record store, and they have an extensive Duran Duran section. Duran Duran is actually central to the store’s history, which the owner John can tell you more about. I love Record Runner, but my go-to store is A1 in the East Village, as they have a wider selection. And, if you want imported Japanese vinyl, the trip to Face Records in Brooklyn is well worth the trip. I’m sure you’re already well researched, and I’m looking forward to reading your travelogues.
I am definitely going to Record Runner because I was there back in 2015 and again in 2018 – I think. Really pleased it’s still there so will be saying hello to John. Time is going to be limited but let’s see what I can get up to!!
where is A1?? never heard of it!! next time Im in the city after Halloween, I’ll go find it & check it out…willing to meet up with a fellow SDE frequenter…
used to go to Record Runner all the time to buy imports, espesh a-ha, Dead or Alive & Sandra/Arabesque…among others…Duran too I think…
Have a brilliant time Paul and enjoy the gigs. It all sounds amazing!!
Have a great trip Paul and happy record hunting. Not envious.
sounds fantastic, enjoy the trip and the gigs, looking forward to the updates, I enjoyed the 2015 blog you did.
Hi Paul, safe trip, have fun and looking forward to your updates!
Thanks!
