Pet Shop Boys launch ‘Since 1984’ campaign

Featuring Shep Petti-Bone China

Pet Shop Boys are celebrating 40 years together with a campaign called ‘Since 1984’.

We are promised a series of exclusive products, under this brand, and in true PSB style the first is rather un-rock ’n’ roll – a fine bone china tea set!

The 22-karat gold-plated range has been designed by longtime design partners Farrow and encompasses cups, saucer, tea pot, milk jug and sugar bowl.

Each piece is “hand-finished” and decorated with PSB symbols (pointy hats, silhouettes, Chris’ glasses from the Suburbia single sleeve, etc) and has been made in the UK by Duchess China.

Each set comes with a certificate of authenticity and prices start at £200 (for a milk jug and sugar bowl). They will be ‘released’ in November and can be pre-ordered via the PSB site.

  1. One of the things I’ve always admired about the Pet Shop Boys is their refusal to allow their songs to be used in TV commercials but times are changing as they have allowed ‘Left to my own devices’ to be used in a new EE commercial.
When I heard about it I was really shocked but thankfully it’s been used really well and if it brings them new fans then all the better.
I’ll put a link, what do you think?

  2. Its not going to replace my Denby, but I do appreciate the handmade care shown in the making of the pieces.

What I find interesting is most of the ‘iconify’ was from the 90s period.

  3. No problem with that. They had the opportunity to create this porcelain collection, so much the better for them.
Do I find this to my taste? no.
Do I feel concerned by this product? no.
Consequently, where is the harm? It takes more to make me angry about something.
It doesn’t do anything for me, maybe it will please some people to have these objects.
    Great good for them.

  4. Of all the things they could do, they chose to do this?! SMDH. Not even remotely interested in this.

Also, I hate when artists “celebrate” anniversaries by selling stuff that has nothing to do with their music. That’s no celebration, you’re just trying to get us to buy your crappy merch. And when it’s so overpriced like here… Damn.

  5. Why on earth would the PSBs think I’d want something quirky and original when all I really want is another rehash of their first album with loudly remastered versions of tracks I already own?

  6. It wouldn’t be so bad if the art they used was better, it doesn’t look that different from the old tat brought out for the Queen’s Jubilee…

    1. Thank you Edgar, much-needed full laugh today. Agenda might be my fave bit of theirs last ten years. I’d be curious at the content were Neil to write a song titled “Capitalism.”

  7. Foo Fighters did the same, came in a wicker basket… teapot, cups and saucers each cup with a member of the band on….. just what we need in ‘Times Like These’….

  8. As much as these obviously aren’t for everybody, I’m happy to see them offer merchandise like this as separate items than doing ridiculously priced Super Deluxe Editions of their early albums and adding the cost of the trinkets into that and then having that SKU be the only way to get a Blu-ray Disc with new 5.1 and Atmos mixes on it, and I’m sure most people would agree with that! Given that they’ve done a standalone Blu-ray of their latest album with surround, I’m hopeful future reissue campaigns will consider that surround fans aren’t all millionaires who’ll pay whatever to get one optical disc. Being Pouring is hilarious! So keep the trinkets separate, seems to be more pro-consumer to me than stuff like the uber deluxe edition of Achtung Baby.

    1. I hadn’t thought of it in those terms, but I wholeheartedly agree with you. There will always be fans who would love to own “trinkets”, but to keep the sales up, or indeed, increase them – more optical content and less tat to keep the price down.
      And it is nearly Christmas!

  9. These are truly awful and rediculous prices. I’ve had a look at the merchandise section on their website and most of the stuff is over priced rubbish. Hideous T shirts , caps etc

  10. “Hey love, my nan is coming over for tea in a minute, could you get the Pet Shop Boys China out please? No I can’t, I’m unpacking their new 40th anniversary box sets that just arrived. Which shall I open first, the singles box or the Dolby Atmos box?
Honey wake up, it looked like you were dreaming again.”

  11. Fully aware that freedom of opinion is inviolable, for me this time it is a categorical no. As a massive PSB enthusiast, I will never be able to understand the reasons for a possible purchase.

  12. I would much prefer that they launched an archive series starting with their early 1984 recordings. Like many artists this is just some high end merch. Anyone see that £295 Martin Fry Autobiography with an exclusive gold LP of acoustic hits? I suppose all a bit of fun. Maybe Chris Lowe will partner with a designer and create a line of west end sunglasses.

    1. I was toying with the expensive version of the Martin Fry book, but ended up paying £40 for the semi-posh one with signed bookplate and exclusive CD.

This PSB merch is quirky, but even for what they are, the price is astronomical, so it’s a no from me.

  13. Well, I’ll say this – it gives the Prince Estates Prince-themed pjs and bed sheets a run for their money. Maybe it’s not “about the music” after all.

  14. I’d have preferred they do a disc each of tracks that have resonated with each of them the most, along with extended versions and videos they’re proudest of or most impressed with.

  15. Starting at 200 euros, my first thought was, no thanks. Still, life’s full of choices and I’m sure there are those out there who will happily fork out their hard-earned to buy one or more of the tea set options on offer.

As others have stated, 40 years of PSBs Actually seems like the perfect opportunity to start rolling out some deluxe sets with all the bells and whistles, Please. ;-)

  16. …..”and prices start at £200 (for a milk jug and sugar bowl).” I took a look at the prices, blimey, they make all the Beatles Super-Deluxe editions – combined – appear to be cheap.

  17. 40 years of career we are entitled to a tea set that makes me laugh… I would rather that he publishes a complete singles and remixes in a box for that price

  18. The Gilbert and George of British music continue to expand the envelope.

It’s a charming and harmless enterprise and doesn’t force the vinyl or CD collectors into having to compromise or complain.

Still never being boring, 40 years on.

  19. Looks like Kate and Neil have been having a chat over the chocolate digestives on the chaise longue.

Deciding what pointless nonsense comes next.

Somebody, no doubt, will love it and bravo for them it’s just not my….. cup of tea?

  20. Dear Chris and Neil, in celebration of your upcoming anniversary could you please begin a super-duper re-release schedule, which would include re-issuing albums with 12″ singles. A re-mix or mash-up of your further listening campaign, with New Order’s current definitive programme would be wonderful. A series of boxes including album and 12″ singles with supporting CDs and a nice glossy book would look wonderful on the shelving. Thanks in advance. Mark

    1. Have you not read any interviews with them? If they hadn’t done something this twee, absurd, and almost cringingly English I’d be worried they’d been kidnapped by the Parlophone marketing dept.
