This bonus disc with the BBC sessions is exclusive to the box

Tears For Fears have made available via Soundcloud stream, four tracks from their debut album, The Hurting, that were recorded for a special Peel Session on 1st September 1982.

Ideas As Opiates, Suffer The Children, The Prisoner and The Hurting were recorded at BBC radio studios for legendary broadcaster John Peel, over 30 years ago and they have remained commercially unavailable since that time.

All that changes in two and a half weeks, when they are released as part of a ‘live sessions’ CD that is exclusive to the forthcoming 3CD+DVD deluxe box set of The Hurting that’s being issued to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

SuperDeluxeEdition Editor, Paul Sinclair, has had a hand in this set. As well as helping to compile the bonus discs, he interviewed the band and has written a 3,000 world essay on the album, which will be included in a special hardback book within the box (the essay is also in the two-CD deluxe edition booklet).

The Hurting 3CD+DVD deluxe box set is out on 21 October 2013. Full track listing here.

  1. I’ve had this on pre-order since I first heard about it months ago – it will be great to hear some of the stuff on CD for the first time – I’ve had the first two singles on vinyl for over 30 years – there was an official Mercury promo CD for “The Hurting” made in the late 80s that has the supposed single versions on it, it’ll be interesting to hear them on this commercially released cd – I expect them to be somewhat different … and of course there’s the remix of “Change” that was previously only on the original cassette version of the album from 1983 – I’ve still got the tape, and luckily it’s still in very good condition.

Also looking forward to the box set of “Songs From The Big Chair” – I’ve got all of the 7/10/12 inch singles from it plus the very rare CD Video singles – most of these have unique stuff that’s never been put out on CD – I’m hoping that “Everybody Wants To RUN The World” is included in all its versions – it was released on 7 and 12 inch in 1986 for Sport Aid – only the 7 inch version has ever been released on CD – and that was on “Now That’s What I Call Music ’86” – a single CD compilation released around Nov 1986 – not to be confused with any later compilations with similar names. :D

  2. Now, even more looking forward to the 3CD/DVD release. What I really like about these Peel sessions is that the songs sound more organic, yet still somewhat “synthy”. Just goes to show that this group’s material works in both an acoustic style and programmed, synthesized one. I truly hope that the new album for 2014 will combine the two sounds together. They were some talented “chaps” at only age 20. Now I am really curious and salivating for what the SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR era will beautifully destroy us with in terms of unearthed goodies!

  3. Just goes to show how great John Peel was to keep tabs on the two guys from GRADUATE and what they would do next (wow). Can’t wait for the box. Thanks to Mr. Sinclair for having a fan’s interaction included in the making of the box. Something that these anniversary boxes tend to forget of late.
Hoping further expanded editions are on the way for the remaining two albums of the original trio.
