Dolby Atmos Mix available physically
The 2021 Dolby Atmos Mix of Alphaville’s 1984 album Forever Young is being released on blu-ray audio for the album’s 40th anniversary.
The singles from the record include the title track, ‘Sounds Like A Melody’, ‘The Jet Set’ and the international hit ‘Big in Japan’.
There was a super deluxe of Forever Young back in 2019 which featured three CDs, a DVD and a vinyl record but there was no surround sound or immersive audio included.
The new blu-ray isn’t exactly packed with content, but does feature the Dolby Atmos Mix and a 48/24 stereo mix of the album. Regardless, if you want to own a physical copy of the Atmos Mix of Forever Young, this is likely going to be your only chance.
Forever Young is released on limited edition blu-ray audio on 5 July 2024 via Warner Music Germany. This isn’t part of the SDE Surround Series but it’s available to pre-order via the SDE shop using this link or the button below.

Not a surprise. Blu-ray should really be purchased primarily for Atmos, 5.1 etc. If you get a decent stereo mastering it should be considered a bonus…
And in this case, the atmos mix, from the mentioned (excellent) site says that theAtmos version is « « the main attraction » of this blu-ray. I agree.The mix combine a great dynamic range, equivalent to the original 1984 CD release but “with a sound balance corrected for today’s listening” (what does it means, “today’s listening”, I must admit not knowing what’s behind these words)

Was very excited but this is one of the worst Atmos mixes I heard in a while. I barely hear anything through the back speakers. Very disappointed. Why bother? There should be rating for spatial mixes so people know in advance what they get. Not every mix is good. This would get one star out of 5. Bummer.
I am just listening this release. A few comments.
– Only ca 3 GB are used on Blu-ray with 25 GB
– There are only 2 streams: Dolby Atmos and LPCM Stereo 48/24
– The sound is not muffled and there are effects in surround speakers, the sound is with high dynamics
– Unfortunately, since my a/v gear is 5.1 with no Dolby Atmos support, the system plays Dolby TrueHD BUT there is no sound from centre speaker. Therefore, for me this is 4.1 and all my 5.1 speakers are not utilized
– Why someone releases a Blu-ray with 3 GB of data only? Why they do not include 5.1 stream in DTS HD Master or a proper 5.1 Dolby TrueHD?
For this I have been waiting so long…
And I am noticing as I play it the songs are being pushed out at between 4.5-5.9 Mbps. I’ve seen Atmos mixes at 23-24 Mbps with most around 16 Mbps. So there’s less data per song than many other Atmos mixes.
The use of the speakers is inconsistent. Victory of Love has no center and the rears are very weak. Summer in Berlin had strong center and decent rear output. Big on Japan has bass coming out the center and very little in rear. In the snood has drums coming from above.
Some strange and inconsistent use of the Atmos capability. And no indication who created this mix/mess.
I received my pre-ordered Blu-ray today and checked out its sound with my favorite tracks Big in Japan, Forever Young and Summer in Berlin. Unfortunately, I’m far away from being impressed. The sound is a bit muffled and I couldn’t identify any surround sound at all. Not every album is as amazing as Kraftwerk’s The Album but older remixed editions like Air’s Moon Safari or Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells were quite impressive, taking into consideration they were not initially mixed for Dolby Atmos.
Curious, how others think of the Dolby Atmos mix.
Got mine today and thought the surround mix was pretty impressive. I was surprised there was no mention of Dolby Atmos anywhere on the box, disc or booklet though.
Ordered, can’t wait to receive this and listen to it through my Dolby Atmos soundbar, I have the original CD but you have to turn the volume right up as sound is very low
Looking forward to this release. In my opinion this is one of the best debut albums (at least in electronic / synth-pop music) and it starts with one of the best opening songs.

Can’t help but think this is a massively missed opportunity. Really is a bare-bones release. So many good b-sides and remixes that could have been included (even if just in hi-res stereo).
The SDE of this album released in 2019 included b-sides, remixes, and demos and I doubt that they wanted to make that release entirely redundant by including it all again here – especially for £23.00. This includes what the SDE didn’t have, which was an Atmos mix.
I made no mention of the 4-disc SDE. Tbh I was thinking along the lines of the 2-disc 2019 set, which is out of print, as far as I can tell. I see no downside to offering the material again, as a sweetener on the blu-ray.
Not really fussed about the demos, though I know some will disagree.
Including that second disc would have made sense, the up-tempo version of Forever Young for example would surprise a lot of people who only remember the original…
Very tempted on this one although I wish it was part of the SDE series with a slipcover and some extras. It’s harder to make a decision when it’s not advertised as a limited edition and you’ve bought the album soooo many times. Would love to see Afternoons in Utopia in surround… but yes an absolute classic and truly amazing feat in that English wasn’t their native tongue!

I’m sure that this will sound good but I expect that The Breathtaking Blue would really benefit from this treatment.
Afternoons in Utopia would also be an excellent Atmos candidate.
And so would be Prostitute, one of my Alphaville all-time-favourite!
My last school trip was to Berlin 1984 where I bought a cassette of this, I’ve been back every year since and am off next week to do a Bowie pub crawl, I bought the 2019 deluxe, I have a few vacant Kallax cubes after a charity shop clear out, so very tempted by this

Paul, glad to read the news! My 13 years old self is thrilled! This album was on my 5.1 wishlist so I will order it. No extended tracks and no b-sides but that’s life. Still have the 7 and 12 inches bought at the time. I can’t wait listening to some tracks in 5.1, A Victory Of Love, Summer In Berlin and Sounds Like A Melody in particular!
Love this album
I got the 2019 deluxe set and the book is a very interesting read. One thing that stood out was the fact that all these songs were written by people who did not have English as their first language. As early ABBA songs testify, it’s not an easy task and Alphaville pulled it off brilliantly (better than ABBA I’d say too!)
