Bryan Ferry’s ‘Retrospective’ available on SDE exclusive blu-ray audio

#34 in the SDE Surround Series

Bryan Ferry / Retrospective SDE exclusive blu-ray audio

Bryan Ferry’s recent Retrospective collection is now available in immersive Dolby Atmos, in full uncompressed quality, on blu-ray audio, as part of the ongoing SDE Surround Series.

The 20-track compilation offers the Roxy Music frontman’s classic solo output with Island Records, Polydor, Virgin/E.G., and BMG. It features eight top 40 UK hits including ‘A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall’, ‘Let’s Stick Together’, ‘Slave to Love’, ‘Don’t Stop The Dance’ and more.

Ferry’s wonderfully produced music is perfect for Dolby Atmos (or 5.1) and legendary producer/mixer Bob Clearmountain (who mixed Bryan’s 1985 album Boys and Girls) has done an incredible job with Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mixes of all 20 tracks, including those aforementioned classics, and songs such as ‘Kiss and Tell’ (from Bête Noire), ‘I Put A Spell On You’ (from Taxi) and ‘Your Painted Smile’ from Mamouna.

Additionally, this blu-ray features bonus content in the form of the 16 ‘Rare and Unreleased’ songs from the fifth disc of the Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023 deluxe package, released in October. These are stereo only.

The SDE exclusive blu-ray of Bryan Ferry’s Restrospective

The SDE exclusive blu-ray features the following audio streams:

  • Bob Clearmountain Dolby Atmos Mix [exclusive physical release]
  • Bob Clearmountain 5.1 Mix (48/24) [exclusive]
  • Original Stereo Mix (48/24)
  • 16 ‘Rare and Unreleased’ bonus tracks (stereo only) (48/24)

The blu-ray is presented in deluxe rigid board packaging, the same as used for Richard Wright’s Wet Dream blu-ray last year, and the imminent Thompson Twins Into The Gap SDE blu-ray – not the usual amaray case. However, this will ship with a collectible SDE slipcase and the dimensions are virtually identical.

This Bryan Ferry Retrospective release is a region-free blu-ray audio and is #34 in the ongoing SDE Surround Series. Don’t miss out. This product is a limited edition and the pre-order window closes on 5 December 2024. Availability cannot be guaranteed after that date, so secure your copy today by pre-ordering at the SDE shop, either directly via this link or using the special SDE shop buy button below. We ship worldwide.

This Bryan Ferry Retrospective blu-ray release is a collaboration between SDE and BMG and will be released on 31 January 2025.

TECHNICAL NOTES: This blu-ray audio requires a blu-ray player. Decoding the Dolby Atmos mix requires a Dolby Atmos-certified soundbar or a Dolby Atmos-compatible AV Receiver/Amp. The Dolby Atmos mix will ‘fold down’ to 5.1 or stereo if a Dolby Atmos decoder is not detected. This product contains no video.

  1. Just as a matter of interest; Phil Manzanera was interviewed in last month’s Prog Magazine and he said that a “For your Pleasure” box set is due soon, in addition to a very large “Avalon” box set some time in the future. Can anybody shine any light on this?

  2. I was on the fence about this one as my love of Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music is mainly just for a few albums of each. So I auditioned the lossy Atmos mix of this collection that is on Apple Music last night and was quite impressed by how good it was – with plenty of use of the surround speakers. Bob Clearmountain seems to have done a great job as he did with the 6 HoJo tracks in Atmos which gives me high hopes for the Simple Minds Atmos and 5.1 mixes. I also hope that his Atmos mix of Avalon will make it to the SDE series next year as it sounded gorgeous even on Apple Music.

  3. Hey Paul a question. From the newsletter “Amazingly, Bryan Ferry is the 18th SDE blu-ray product announced in 2024, and will very likely be the last”

    Does this mean :
    1) The last SDE of 2024
    2) The last SDE ever ?

    I’m hoping its option 1

  4. Hi Paul,

Any chance of adding a Bob C stereo mix derived from the Atmos/5.1 that is flat transferred like SW did for TFF Songs For A Nervous Planet?

It would be fantastic if you could ensure one stereo mix on each release without excessive limiting/compression.

5.1 folds-down well to stereo (Atmos not so well) but it would be much better to get the folddown performed by the Atoms/5.1 mixer.

  5. Another great SDE release, already pre-ordered it! But this is just a taste of Mr. Ferry’s art, would it be possible to have individual Boys and Girls, Bete Noire, Taxi, Mamouna, Olympia releases in high-res & surround bluray? I may be too much to ask, but they certainly are worth trying.
What about if Roxy Music’s Flesh and Blood and Avalon be given the same bluray treatment? My guess is there are plenty of fans wishing the same.

  6. Good to know this is the last SDE blu ray announcement of the year because it’s becoming a big expense! I’ve bit the bullet and ordered this with the Simple Minds bundle. Thank you for the great effort getting these out.

  7. Paul,
If this is the last SDE release announcement for the year then thanks for all your hard work in getting these surround sound audio releases out. At the beginning of the year you were hoping to release more titles this year and I think you’ve surpassed expectations.

I have many of the first batch of Blu-ray Audio releases which were mostly stereo before the odd 5.1 disc appeared, it seemed to be a forgotten media before the first SDE release of The Tipping Point appeared in surround. Obviously, Rhino/Warners have taken note and have their own releases coming out from the US which can only be a good thing for us who like physical media.

There was a nice drop of Dolby Atmos releases on Tidal this week so it looks like the format is holding strong and will bring more releases in 2025. I’m sure you’ve already got a few anniversary releases in mind for next year along with some new material.

Tidal has dropped 360 reality audio so it’ll be great if some of these titles could be released on physical media like Terrence Trent D’arby (Sananda Maitreya) or even Michael Jackson though that would be some coup if that ever happened.

Keep up the good work, looking forward to 2025.

  8. This is the 4th release in a row ive passed on due to a strict belt tightening regime this time of year. There have been some good releases I’ve regrettable missed out on but i hope for more quality goods next year *cough* Frankie *cough*.

Still have Into The Gap turning up so not gonna grumble.

My one wish next year is Elastica”s debut on SDE blu ray

      1. Regarding Elastica on vinyl, i used to have a UK copy with the misprint…heard it was rare…but sold it decades ago, thinking “ah, it wont be worth much more”…is it valuable?? Curious…

  9. Impressive week! Glad I was slow to pull the trigger for the Simple Minds release as I will be getting this one as well. This is perfect because this compilation looked nice, but I already have Bryan Ferry’s albums, the deluxe seemed a bit much but here is a great compromise, hi-res hits in surround and stereo rare tracks. Irresistible. I do hold hope for Frankie and Duran Duran 1-3 in the series… this is such a cool project you have started here, effectively breathing new life into what was largely a forgotten format. So much is made of vinyl now, ignoring the full potential of the capabilities of digital media (the source for many of those new reissued records) and here you’ve carved out a nice niche for us here. Thanks again.

    1. Thanks. I’d much rather have a blu-ray audio of an album with immersive mixes etc. than one vinyl record with one stereo mix that probably costs more.

      1. Agree, have also just ordered both this and Simple Minds bundle. Although I have a spacious home vinyl just takes up so much space. Travelling to Japan last year it was obvious why the Japanese still love CDs with such small living spaces in the cities, does SDE get many orders from Japan or promote there ?

        1. Giles,
I’m in Japan. As you say sarcastically, Japanese music listeners over the age of 50 still cling to physical items.

Despite being high price and poor value for money, I reluctantly bought the Retrospective 5CD box. Because I’m a fan of long-time Mr. Ferry.

The average price of the Retrospective 5CD box in Japan is 23,000 yen. Convert this price to the exchange rate in your country, you would see how much of a burden it would be. I also ordered the SDE Blu-ray, which cost 8600 yen including shipping to Japan.

Although the 5CD box was released in October, it only arrived in Japan yesterday. My country’s economic power has declined, it seems that I can no longer share the same fun with the SDE members at same time.

To further answer your question, Japanese interest in classic rock and pops is waning year by year. Their poor English skills have not been resolved even in 2024, I think there are very few who check SDE on a daily basis.

          1. puwo-toto
I think you mis-read me, apologies if you picked me up as being sarcastic as it was not the intention at all. I loved my time in Japan and the attention to detail there is amazing. It was merely an observation that the majority in the cities have less living space than those in the ‘West’ hence I presume why they produce the CDs that are mini replicas of large vinyl records. Goes along with the art of Bonsai etc.
            Giles

          2. Giles,
You don’t need to apologize. Please come visit my country again to dig Japanese CDs and vinyls.

      2. I agree and have said this here before.

I’ve been vinyl for 40 years but my preference is Blu Ray now ripped to my NAS.

Vinyl done well can sound fantastic but increasingly so to can lossless digital (16/44 or better). With a good DAC and care taken to avoid high frequency radio interference getting into the DAC streaming from NAS can be just as good as vinyl if not better and importantly more consistent.

  10. I already have the single CD and find it to be a lovely compilation, so the blu-ray with rare tracks is very tempting, even after ordering both Simple Minds discs mere days ago. But as one stuck in the two-channel universe, like Italo Calvino’s Aquatic Uncle, I wonder if there is a new stereo mix by Bob Clearmountain, who only did a few of the original mixes. I can fold the Atmos and 5.1 mixes down to stereo, but a dedicated new stereo mix would be quite welcome, as well as quite interesting, given the breadth of the source material. Nevertheless, it is a great offering as always – unique mixes and additional tracks – and far superior in both content and curatorial care to so many of the non-SDE blu-ray editions out there. And it is not often that we see a compilation remixed in this way, given the difficulty of assembling the multitrack reels from so many studios, sessions, labels, and decades. I think I need one. The new year’s listening is already shaping up nicely. Well done, SDE!

  11. Instant order, again. :)
I particularly love Brian Ferry. I have few records but when his voice appears I can’t stop listening to him.
    Thanks Paul!
PS: can I hope that a nice 80s record by the Bee Gees could be part of the series? My forbidden dream is the oft-quoted “How old are you?” ( 1983 ) by Robin Gibb as a soloist but a nice “E.S.P.” ( 1987 ) or “ONE” ( 1989) wouldn’t displease me at all.
What do you think? Do you think it’s difficult?
    Thanks again!

  12. Glad I let the dust settle. Not a fan of compilations from artists who just have too much to offer. Difficult cherry picking when there’s so many left on the tree! Lead singles from both Bête Noir and Avonmore not included (Right Stuff, Lop Di Li), and nothing off the excellent Frantic! Obviously a ‘boys and girls’ deluxe wouldn’t go astray.

  13. What an amazing year you have had Paul! Many thanks for all your hard work. Such joy you bring to us with all the releases this year. Once again, an amazing Atmos blu-ray, Bryan Ferry, who doesn’t want that? Great news.

  14. Am I the only one who thinks the content is a bit disappointing? All songs are already previously released in physical and digital formats, so no new unique content here.
If there would be instrumentals and/or other exclusive material it would be a no brainer. To be honest the original 5CD box set had already raised my eyebrows as it could’ve been so much better…

Anyway, I’m glad many are very enthusiastic about this release. I would love to see a SDE release of ‘Boys and Girls’, including all the versions, demos and instrumentals…

    1. The selling point for everyone else is being able to listen to the album in surround format. I know not everyone has caught up with this concept but everything else that is added is a bonus for us.
I get if you’re unable to listen to the surround version you may feel short changed but this is not what the series is selling.

      1. Who says I am unable to listen to music in surround stereo? My point is, compared to other releases in this series, this release has not a lot of extras. That’s why it’s a no go this time…

          1. …of which are already released on CD. I was referring to the releases which have exclusive BR content (instrumentals, BR-only bonus tracks…).

This forum offers room for discussion, although I sometimes get the impression that not all opinions are valued and/or accepted. I still wonder why it’s so hard for some to accept a different opinion. A different opinion is not necessarily an ‘attack’ or negative feedback. I’m getting a bit tired of all those ‘hot-tempered’ reactions. No one gets better from just hosanna reactions…

Anyway, I didn’t think the original 5CD tracklist was spectacular, and this slimmed down BR version isn’t going to change much for me, even though it is now partly Atmos and 5.1 mixes.

I can’t wait for my Thompson Twins edition to arrive one of these days and both Simple Minds SDE editions in a few months.

          2. The issue is your comments are almost entirely negative. When Thompson Twins was announced you posted multiple comments about what wasn’t included. It’s tiring. These Blu-rays are primarily about delivering Atmos and 5.1 mixes on physical formats – they are not about demos, unreleased tracks etc. So I think your comment is unfair.

  15. I love the exclusives, I REALLY REALLY do, but if you can consider the cost of separate postage (8-12 pounds) every time an SDE shop user overseas places an order, you could save us supporters a LOT of unnecessary expense.
    So maybe consider:
    1. A more flexible policy of combining pre-order phase offerings
2 Sale announcements of SEVERAL SDE Exclusives at once, rather than the current willy nilly approach
    Thanks again, Paul and Co!

    1. I hear what you are saying Hoffman, but here in Canada, due to the new electronic customs info, the cost of two (or more) SDE together more than certainly gets the automatic customs alert extra Tax + “Admin Fee” so the saved cost gets wiped out.

    2. I’m sure Paul understands where you’re coming from but you have to remember that Paul is not dealing with one record company. The SDE releases so far have come from various labels so I’m sure they are in control of the schedules, approvals and timings of each release.
If it’s just a single label releasing blu-rays, they can dictate their own schedule hence someone like Rhino can release blu-rays in batches of four. You also need some good space to be able group stock together until they are ready to release which I’m not sure SDE has looking at some of the photo’s Paul has posted in the past.

  16. Any more announcements before the 5th December? Just want to combine as many Blu-ray’s as possible into one order to keep the postage down.

    Keep ‘em coming!

  17. Just ordered. Such an easy decision. Clearmountain did the Roxy Music Avalon surround sound mix. It is phenomenal. Can’t wait to hear the Dolby Atmos mix.

  18. Hello people,

Just received the very beautiful Retrospective 5CD but could not resist this Ferry SDE in Atmos

Instant pre-order like the Simple Minds releases so this has been an expensive week so far but you only live once!

Thank you Paul, ‘Avalon’ or ‘Boys And Girls’ perhaps next year?

    Cheers,

    Henrik.

  19. Paul, I want to say that I’m beyond impressed with what you’ve achieved with this series. It’s phenomenal. I won’t/can’t buy them all, but, wow, I’m a HUGE fan of what you’re doing.

I can’t believe the titles and artists that you managed to get thus far. Seriously, how many feathers do you need in your cap? :):):)

    1. Haha! Thank you so much. Warm words mean a lot because this year has been mad busy with – I think – 17 product announcements! Not exactly sure how we’ve done it but hey… The goal must now be to reach 50 by the end of 2025, god willing.

      1. I had learned to expect only one per month but that pace has clearly accelerated this year. So happy to see some of these albums get the Atmos treatment and look forward to next year with another dozen or more to enjoy. I have high hopes for a few of my favourites to be among them.

        1. It’s so much about the “pace accelerating” is more about a few release events ended up colliding. I am not in charge of label release schedules and do not control the window when they would like to announce / release something. I try and influence but with multiple labels and labels-within-labels it’s difficult.

          1. I think the industry is taking notice of the SDE Surround Series (Rhino especially) and more Atmos mixes are making it to Blu-ray as standalone (Rhino, Warner) or in boxed sets. I credit you with showing the labels that it is worthwhile, here with # 34 in the series being announced.

  20. Fantastic release, Paul, if any artist deserved the hi res treatment, its Ferry! Tried to order from the SDE store but there seems to be an issue at the moment, the screen freezes after checkout is selected?

  21. All i say is oh jeez!! I thought we were done for the year with that Simple Minds bundle…but oh no no no Paul…you had one final surprise, one final rabbit to pull out of your hat with Bryan Ferry!! I am eventually going to get the 5CD box, this will come first…preordering Simple Minds first next, then BF…if i have 1 quibble, one track was overlooked off the whole set, “The Right Stuff” from “Bete Noire”…but like any comp, something is bound to be missing & the packaging here is bound to be exquisite like the other companion pieces…i may even buy the vinyl!! Lastly, with “Johnny & Mary”, always thought Bryan Ferry & Robert Palmer (RIP) were like stylistic brothers…

  22. OMG @Pauls – this is AMAZING! Another order coming your way. I can’t wait to hear surround versions of ‘Let’s Stick Together’, ‘The In Crowd’ and ‘Sign of the Times’.
Already have the 5.1 versions of Boys & Girls, Frantic, the first RM SDE and Avalon, but there are some corkers on here.

  23. You’re on a roll at the moment, cheers Paul.
I was thinking Avalon or the Best of Roxy Music as a future SDE release since they are already up on Tidal but this will do for now.
I have a couple of Bryan Ferry 5.1 SACD’s and I do enjoy Bob Clearmountain’s surround mixes. Like Steven Wilson, he does use the centre speaker for the main vocals.

  24. Now that’s more like it! Not so interested in the Simple Minds blu-rays, but this is something else! Already bought the standard CD, the double LP and the deluxe box set, so why not this one as well…
    Thanks Paul!

  25. I’m out. Paul, you’ve broken me.
I did Elton and The Who, I’m planning to do Simple Minds, but I can’t stretch to this.
So glad I’m not a completist or suffer from FOMO with these.
This would be a nice to have so I’m good with not getting it, but I live in fear of what may come next.

  26. I hope that one of the new SDE releases in 2025 will be Bryan Ferry’s “Boys And Girls”. It is one of my favorite albums of 1985. I promised myself that I wouldn’t buy anymore Blu-ray Audio discs this year. But I may have to break this promise!

  27. Hey Paul,
no brainer and again instant order. Now i will really get a hole in my pocket and i think there will be one or two another one in december!? Surprise us. Thank you very much for another beautiful release.

  28. Well that’s it. I’m never buying CDs or Box Sets again. Just gonna wait for SDE to release them on BD. Outstanding work Paul. Keep it up.

  29. Paul,

I assume the original stereo mix @ 24/48 is the same master used for the CD?

    Automatic buy for me anyway.

Are we expecting #35 to be announced tomorrow?

        1. Paul,

What a fantastic year for Blu Ray audio both SDE and elsewhere.

Please keep up the pace in 2025 and I hope you are making some reasonable money for doing all of this.

Not SDE but the Purple Rain Atmos Blu Ray promised before the end of 2024 has not materialised.

Top of my list for 2025 are

          Heaven 17 P&P and LG
          Nick Kershaw Human Racing
          FGTW WTTPD
          The The Infected
          Duran Duran #1-3
          Terrence Trent D Hardline

        2. 2024 was action-packed for sure – 18 new exclusive blu-rays announced, every one of them fantastic — and nearly every one better than the previous!

  30. Paul, you keep on taking the money from our wallets – but we applaud you for it!!
Another fantastic entry, and another ‘no-brainer’. Thank you for investing a lot of time into sourcing such great artists for this series. At the rate they’re landing recently it’ll be no.50 by Christmas!!
    Keep them coming Paul!

  31. This is amazing. A few months ago I bought an entry level 4k blu ray player and upgraded my Sonos to the beam with atmos so I could collect some of these discs. And now amongst the first two to be announced since my purchase are two of my all time favourites Elton John and Bryan Ferry. Thanks Paul

  32. With all due respect, are you *@c%!ng kidding me? Wowza. What a roll SDE is on. Beyond well done Paul. Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday to me! (also, for those tracking, i posted this BEFORE I ordered, but running off to order now) Never thought i’d be looking forward to the end of January in the northern US.

  33. Wow, after more than 30 SDE blurays by artists I am not keen on I get to join in with the Who and now a chance to start my Ferry collection within a few weeks. Keep them coming..

  34. Recently The Who, Elton John, Simple Minds, and now good old Bryan Ferry, it goes beyond my imagnation and everytime it suprise me. What else we can expect or wish, leave it on magician Paul he cares us very well. My deep respect for what he build so far on this wonderful journey.

  35. Bryan Ferry is a many things (unique, great vocalist, etc.) but I’m not sure he gets the recognition he deserves for his interpretation / arrangement of other people’s music. Jealous Guy (I know, it’s with Roxy Music), A Hard Rain…, etc. are to my ears superb versions, but I reckon his version of Robert Palmer’s “Johnny & Mary” is one of the great covers of one of the greatest songs of all time. Both the Palmer and Ferry version are so different you would think they are different songs. Which is a long way of saying that this set (alongside the Simple Minds announcement earlier in the week) means I’m going to be having a conversation with the boss lady about her not needing to purchase me a Christmas present this year as I’ll be taking care of business. Thanks, Paul! :-)

    1. I’m not a particular Dylan fan but Ferry’s Dylanesque LP was superlative. I was expecting nothing, but the end result made me appreciate Dylan much more and my love for Ferry as an interpreter grew strongly.

    2. Couldn’t agree more. I’ve been dropping many a suggestion on both Todd Terje and Bryan’s sites re an entire album of covers in this style. Assume you’re aware it first appeared on Todd’s 2014 album, and of course Avonmore later in the same year. The edit is of course 2 mins shy of the epic 7 min version. Video is gorgeous.

  36. Wow ! 3 new SDE Blu rays in a week. Excellent work Paul. The last few titles have been great and a significant improvement over some of the titles earlier in the year (IMHO).
