Cabaret Voltaire / #8385 Collected Works 1983-1985 multi-format box
Cabaret Voltaire will release a very special box set on 4 November via Mute Records.
#8385 Collected Works 1984- 1985 is a weighty six CD, four vinyl and two DVD box set that includes remastered versions of four of Cabaret Voltaire’s mid-period releases on CD and vinyl: The Crackdown (1983), Micro-Phonies (1984), Drinking Gasoline (1985) and The Covenant, The Sword and the Arm of the Lord (1985).
A further CD collects the band’s twelve inch versions from the period, and a final disc of unreleased tracks, called Earthshaker, completes the CD element of the set.
The first of the two DVDs, Cabaret Voltaire Live, collates two live shows, the Bedford Boys Club (18.08.84) and Hammersmith Palais (02.12.84). The second DVD sees the DVD debut of the 1985 experimental video Gasoline In Your Eye and adds the four promotional videos from the time.
#8385 Collected Works 1983-1985 will be a limited numbered edition, with only 500 copies being made. These will include a 40-page booklet with photographs, notes and essays. All audio is remastered from the original tapes.

The set now includes a download code to get 4 additional tracks which include the aforementioned Empty Walls, plus Safety Zone, Bad Self pt 1 and Drink Your Poison.
Definitely going to try and get it from Amazon. On the band’s official website, they want about $47 for shipping! And that’s WITHOUT the vinyl!
Amazon UK prices have plummeted so that’ll be the best bet for non-UK buyers now due to miles cheaper shipping
The ltd signed version is almost £100 cheaper than Amazon on the bands official site, the box set unsigned and without vinyl is £79.99 on the official site which I think is pretty decent value.
What’s a shame about this very expensive box is that it’s missing so much material. BBC sessions, out-takes, rejected 12″ mixes, etc. Of course some of this material has already been released, but this should round it all up.
And why is the b-side ‘Empty Walls’ not on it?!
For such a huge set and a huge price it looks to be a bit of a missed opportunity.
Absolutely true. The extra download is a joke. The whole thing misses so many great opportunities. Empty Walls would have been a must, unreleased mixes etc. The Cds sound fine, but there’s no big remaster done here. It’s cheaply made and expensively sold.
@seakret
What’s up is the economics of scale. King Crimson have a comparatively huge following and will sell many more sets of the Road to Red that R. Kirk will ever sell of #8385. Accordingly, they can charge less.
#8385 is overpriced, for sure, but it is a fantastic collection of the Cab Volts of that time period.
The four remastered albums will be available as individual CD titles for those who don’t want to mortgage their houses for the box set.
Ouch!
Who is this aimed at?
The three of us that would like this set are tetchy northern skinflints.
At least the German edition is half the price of the UK.
I hope that Gareth Bale likes Cabaret Voltaire, because he is probably one of the few people who can afford this set.
Very excited about this but it’s prohibitively expensive. The King Crimson Road to Red 21 CD/DVD/Blu-Ray is the same price as the non-vinyl 6 CD/2 DVD version of this Cabs set. What’s up with that?
Note: This is for sale at the Cabs store via Mute for cheaper than Amazon though outside of UK shipping prices are too high.
Looks like the Amazon USA price went down. Just checked.
Check out other Amazon pricing to get the best deal – still going to be a lot of money what ever way you slice it.
