1995 album reissued
Elvis Costello’s 1995 album Kojak Variety will be reissued as a limited edition coloured vinyl pressing next month.
This is a continuation of the Music On Vinyl reissue series and this long-player consists entirely of cover versions as Costello tackles songs by artists like Little Richard, The Kinks, Aretha Franklin, Willie Dixon, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and more.
Players on the album include James Burton, Jim Keltner, Larry Knechtel, Marc Ribot, Jerry Scheff and Pete Thomas.
This new numbered pressing is limited to 2500 units worldwide and is pressed on 180g turquoise-coloured vinyl. It will be released on 23 September by MOV. Order your copy from the SDE shop via this link or the button below.

Does anybody have any information about the “Painted From Memory” SE? Its the album that’s always left out with the numerous rereleases and has been referred to buy Costello a few times.
Boy, labels are scraping the barrel and adding to the vinyl production woes by insisting on pressing these likely low sellers. I am sure some will welcome this but do the benefits of a vinyl production run for such albums outweigh the delay to a potentially more popular and new issue?
No!
I think Music On Vinyl has its own pressing plant in the Netherlands, so it can basically press what it likes/thinks will sell.
But, yes, there are scores of albums I would place in front of this one in the queue.
I have a fair bit of Costello, but never, ever play this album. One for the completists.
I agree with that. I have most of his stuff on the “medium that’s seen its day”. I did have the original CD of this release, but I wasn’t that keen on it so I sold it. However, I have an irrational itch to get the expanded version, but I missed the chance to get it at a ‘reasonable’ price.

Agree that this is definitely one of EC’s weakest albums. Although it’s good to see this period receiving the vinyl treatment I would love to see Universal (or whoever owns his catalogue now) reissue the 2CD Rhino versions, especially Mighty Like A Rose and Brutal Youth. Have them all up to Blood and Chocolate but made the fatal choice to delay buying the later five albums. For someone of Costello’s stature his back catalogue seems to have been a mess for so long.
As a Costello completist I did buy this vinyl version for around £12 from Rarewaves (I think it is still selling for just above that price). However I agree that it is far from Costello’s best, in fact it may well be his poorest recorded offering. Strangely enough the second disc of the expanded CD version of the album is far better than the actual album itself, in my opinion.
