Jaki Graham / The Studio Albums 1985-1998: seven-disc box set

Edsel will next month release a box set collecting the studio output of English singer Jacki Graham who scored six consecutive top 20 hits in the mid 1980s.

The Studio Albums 1985-1998 is a seven-CD, one-album-per-disc box set. The early years saw Graham enjoy much success with EMI, particularly with the Heaven Knows and Breaking Away long-players. From the mid-nineties onwards, she had a deal with Japan’s Avex Records, and this box sees the first official UK release for all four of those records (Real Life, Hold On, Rhythm Of Life and My Life).

This 86-track anthology comes with a booklet containing extensive notes by music writer Justin Kantor enriched with new interviews with Jaki Graham and her producers.

The Studio Albums 1985-1998 is released on 10 July 2015.

  1. With regards to 12″ mixes AVEX were unable to give clearance on these and therefore the decision was taken to just releases the albums as they originally were.

  2. I am proud to call Jaki a friend, and I must say this wonderful singer is fully deserving of a career retrospective such as this. Who knows? – the interest in this collection might lead to a 12″ compilation at some point!

  3. ….or you can pick up the 2CD “Absolute Essential Jaki Graham” (featuring 28 tracks including the superior 7″ mix of “Step Right Up” and “No More Tears” which wasn’t on any of these albums) for only £1.10 brand new from Amazon marketplace.

That does me until something more comprehensive comes along…..

  4. “BREAKING AWAY” was reissued by Cherry Red last year as a 17 track CD, features the 12 tracks of the original album plus five bonus tracks.
even that reissue was quite lacking as there were many more 12″ Versions of the era not featured
Bonus Tracks on the Cherry Red Edition : Breaking Away (7″ Version)
    Set Me Free (Extended Version)
    Breaking Away (Extended Version)
Still In Love (Lights Down – Lower Mix)
Luv 2 Much (Too Much 12″ Mix)

  5. The current pre-order price works out at £3 per disc/album, so even without bonus material that’s not a bad deal. Trying to get a used copy of Heaven Knows on CD these days alone would set you back almost half that.

Given the involvement of Jaki, and the extensive sleeve notes, hopefully the mastering will be okay, and not mp3/vinyl sourcing.

  6. I would have pre-ordered this instantly if it included 12″ mixes, remixes and 7″ mixes as bonus tracks. But without those, I’ll pass.

Maybe there will be a mix collection from Cherry Pop at some point, similar to the Five Star, Phil Fearon, Thompson Twins and Paul Young ones. There are plenty of Jaki Graham mixes that haven’t been released on CD.

    1. Edsel aren’t normally slow at offering up bonus tracks.. so presumably some kind of licensing/legal situation prevented the inclusion.
